I'm gonna give y'all a spoiler: I think this is an awesome beer. In a moment I'm going to go into the multi-part review, but first I need to say that this is one of the best IPAs I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. And with no further ado:

Appearance: It looks cool, and the appearance is still the worst part of this beer. Cloudy like a homebrew gone wrong, but an interesting peach color nonetheless. This isn't what beer usually looks like. Huge, sexy, frothy head that gets cloudy and chunky as it settles.

Smell: This is luxurious. It smells like a county fair made of fruit. Hay, a little bit of passionfruit (!), pears, overripe oranges. I love it. The Simcoe hops are magic, and pair with the base malts very well.

Taste: Pineapple and freshly-cut hardwoods. It tastes like a cedar mill and a can of fruit cocktail. A little sweet, but it manages to fully satisfy.

Mouthfeel: Good. Not too fizzy, not too flat. The mouthfeel is hardest to describe because it's in a good place; it doesn't detract from the flavor the way Hex (also from Magic Hat) does. Very supportive. It's not syrupy, but it's not too thin either.

Visited the brewery on 1/8/11. I was not pleased to find out that they had seemingly dropped the chocolate aspect out of the Feast of Fools formula (it is now just a straight up raspberry stout and not nearly interesting enough to make purchasing it worthwhile). However, I did really enjoy the new Encore IPA and ended up getting a growler of it. This is labeled as an American IPA but I had no idea it was actually a WHEAT IPA and the only wheat IPA I have had.

A - Pours cloudy and orange-amber like a white ale with a one finger foamy off-white head.

S - Citrus hops (mainly grapefruit) and grassy. Plenty of wheat in the nose as well and what was cleverly labeled "wet hay" a few reviews down.

T - Very hoppy and bitter. I was expecting more citrus flavored hops (which it does deliver) but it is mainly dominated by piney, earthy hops. I would say it was a bit TOO bitter and almost tart tasting, but I still really enjoyed it.

M - Finishes dry and the carbonation was slightly too high. At least you don't detect much booziness.

D - We were unable to finish the growler as we had been out in Burlington all night sampling, but it was still a great sipping beer. I probably wouldn't session it due to the bitterness.

Overall, this was a good IPA and I am glad to see that Magic Hat is making beers that interest me once again. I hope they keep going in this direction: good, simple, creative beers.

This is likely the final beer in their "IPA on Tour" series, hence the name "Encore". This is actually a cross between an American Pale Wheat Ale and an American IPA. It could have been classified as either since there is no hybrid style.

Pours a light amber-gold color with a thin-head into my glass. Interesting color mix but nothing out of the ordinary.

Aroma is full of light citrus and grassiness from the hops mixed with a hint of clove and wheat. It's what you'd expect from combining both styles.

Taste leans more towards the grassiness of the hops with only a hint of clove. Hard to stomach for some reason.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering grassiness and wheat/clove.

I can't fault Magic Hat for trying to experiment. I just don't think this beer is a viable experiment. It causes too much confusion for the palate. Interesting but only in small quantities.

Caramel golden copper color

Your nose can pick up on the bitter and wheat notes...

To be honest the first time i tried this beer I really enjoyed it, once i started getting into beer more and seeing what other breweries had to offer I realized MagicHat in general is a great introductory brewery. They have the ability to appeal to people outside of the craft brew community, which isn't a bad thing.
This kind of beer is exactly the kind of beer that can show a "craft beer virgin" that there is a beer out there that will appeal to your pallet no matter what your taste buds fancy.

This beer really hits home. But it is subtle as far as intensity of flavors. You are able to pick out the wheat and the hops, but its not overwhelming.
Definately a great introductory brew! Crisp and fresh-- great for Spring and Summer!

A: Pours a clear, copper color with a half inch of foamy, white head that settles slowly to a layer of bubbles on the surface. Some lacing as you drink.
S: Grassy, peppery, and citrus with the hops leading off and a mellow grainy base with a light touch of roasted barley and caramel. More herbally notes in there from the hops.
T: First a fresh grass, light pine, herbal and peppery notes hits the tongue with some bitterness. Then the semi-sweet toasted and bready malt backbone lunges forth and gives a wave of balance to this IPA. More bittering hops push this beer to the bitter end of the spectrum on the finish without any alcohol warmth.
M: Medium-light body with a somewhat moderate carbonation and slight slickness on the tongue. Then come the bittering hops to finish this beer on the bitter side.
O: A decent IPA to throw back pretty easy and satisfy the hop need and refresh the palate. If you are looking for a complex yet smooth as hell IPA this is not it but it is a good beer from Magic Hat and worth the try. It has something there to offer even a big hop snob. Grab one and enjoy!

a - Rust color with a 1 finger head. Nice lacing on glass. Cloudy.

b. Faint small of bitter citrus, grapefruit. Hoppy.

t. I like this blend of American Wheat Beer and IPA. The hops hits you up front and the grapefruit hits you in the finish. There is some alcohol in the finish, but not overwhelming. Bitter aftertaste - very hop bitter throughout - but not in a negative way. Could have used more wheat beer in the mix.

m. carbonation is very good.

o. This beer falls short of outstanding, but I would drink it again if it were offered up.

12oz bottle poured into a Dogfish IPA glass.

A: Pours a very cloudy orange color. Creamy off-white head retains very well. Plenty of stickage.

S: Vibrant hop oils front and center. Big hit of orange peel. Very green and pithy. Dusty and crusty malt base with a smattering of wheat. Faint whiff of alcohol. Blunt and to the point, if not one dimensional.

T: Very green, oily, and pithy. Catty and a little oniony too. Strong bitterness clamps down on the palate in a death grip. Stiff hit of solventy alcohol. Toasted crust. High oily bitterness and boozy on the finish.

M: Soft creamy palate is erased by a gripping wash of hop oils. Fine, scrubbing carbonation feels forced. Alcohol warmth in the swallow.

O: Magic Hat is trying too hard with this one. They need to take this beer down a few notches and focus it. It feels as though they made a bold, hoppy beer just for the sake of it. No balance or finesse at all, and it really wears on the palate.

Pours a half finger of head on a hazy dirty straw colored body.
The aroma is mild grapefruit, not much else.

The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.

Hazy light brown colored. A thin cap of foam covers the entire top of the beer. Aroma of citrus hops and pale wheat. The taste is a burst of citrus hops. I don't get much of the wheat as the fade is dominated by the hops. There's a bit of saltiness in the aftertaste. The feel is a bit warm and carbonated.

Pretty good wheat IPA offering from Magic Hat. It's not the best I've had, but I think the wheat IPA mix can be hard to pull off, and they do a pretty good job here. Nicer light flavor. You definitely get the citrus off the nose, I got more lemon than grapefruit I think, definitely pleasant. I kind of wish this was a summer offering, I think I might like it better that time of year, but it was still good.

Taste: Similar to smell, grapefruit and wheat up front, then hops at the end.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Another new to me IPA from Magic Hat, acquired as part of the Magic Hat winter variety pack. Expectations are about average.

Poured into an over-sized wine glass.

A - Pours a light lemon color but appears bright orange in the glass. Two fingers of soapy off-white head. Fairly unexciting to the look at, but I suppose it suits the style just fine.

S - Smell is of grapefruit rind bitterness, some dusty malt, light grassy wheat, lemon zest, hint of yeast, and some dry soapiness on the finish. Again, fairly unexciting to smell, but suitable for the style.

T - Taste follows the nose: dry bready malts, some bitter grapefruit hops, lemon zest, hint of yeast, herbal earthiness, and a dusty grassy wheat presence. Poor depth of flavor and maybe just a tad too malty / bready.

M - Feel ends bitter, bready, and dry. Medium-full bodied with okay carbonation.

Overall, it is by no means a bad IPA, just a fairly ordinary one at best. Definitely drinkable and approachable, with a semi-higher-than-normal abv of 6.40%, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have this again.

Pours a cloudy, golden-brown color with a thin white crown. A bit of froth is left on the inside of the glass as it goes down. The aroma definitely screams grapefruit as advertised, and I'm also picking up a plethora of grains and coriander. The taste is light and summery, while at the same time packing in a lot of tart and sourness. The finish is quite bitter, however I suspect in my bottle the hops have faded a little.

Pours a hazy sunburst orange with a tight, white head that leaves rings of lacing.

Smells of grassy and citrusy hops.

Tastes of the citrus character with a solid malt backbone. Hops come through first with notes of lemon along with some grass notes. This leads into some fruity notes. Malts come in and add a little caramel along with bread notes. Fairly balanced overall.

Mouthfeel is medium with slightly crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid IPA and fits in well with the Magic Hat lineup.

I picked up a case of the Magic Hat winter variety pack last week and this was one of the included beers. I started drinking these after I had already consumed copious amounts of Hamm's so I didn't bother reading the bottle. I really liked the beer, but could tell it was different than your average IPA. After picking this beer back up I discovered it's a wheat infused IPA, which makes sense when your sober.

A- Light orange and very cloudy like you would expect from a Hefeweizen. The head was white, about one finger thick, and laced nicely.

S- Mild citrus notes upfront followed by a funk aroma, most likely from the simcoe hops. I don't pick up any hints of malt.

T- Thick up front with loads of hop flavor. It has an amber character that fades into grapefruit and citrus with a little spiciness on the finish. You also get some grainy flavors from the wheat malt.

M- It's definitely on the medium-thick side in body from the wheat malt. It also has a smooth texture which is unique for the style. The carbonation was on the moderate side.

O- Overall, a delicious beer and unique twist on the IPA style. It definitely has the hop character you expect in an IPA, but with twist of wheat. It's thick and smoother than your average IPA. I'm going to have to brew my own Wheat IPAs in the near future.

Smell: Soapy hops -- really not much malt here, but it smells average.

Taste/feel: On the front there’s some massive citrus -- grapefruit sorts. Very bitter. Almost a medicinal flavor in there. The aftertaste is spicy with not much malt to balance it out. Decent beer, but it’s just not balanced enough for me.

Taste is more subtle than expected, starts sweet and hoppy, with a slight bitter, and moves to a thick smooth bodied malt with a subtle hop finish and a strong grapefruit aftertaste. Encore is brewed in the style of a American Wheat IPA. Available as part of the Magic Hat Winterland Variety 12 pack.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 49º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy, frothy white head over a very hazy copper-amber body. Retains quite well, dropping at the edges and leaving a thin crown with thin stringy and spotty lacing as it recedes. Lacing is thin and spotty. The wheat certainly has a lot of positive impact on the head quality as well as the body tone. An impressive appearance. 4.5

(Smell) A forward projection of mostly citrusy hops with a moderate malty background. Tart grapefruit, fresh tangerine and some lime rind are most forward. Some mild herbal and floral qualities are notable in the hop presence too. Some mild phenols bring out a mild alcohol aroma, making the aroma slightly less clean than it could be. The hop presence is this beer is very forward and the bitterness is perceivably substantial. Despite some bodily thickness, there isn't much in the aroma that would differentiate this wheat IPA from a pale malt-led IPA, wheat is likely a low player. Potency is high. 3.5

(Taste) The malt body does grow in presence in the aroma, with a soft wheat body and bready caramel sweetness. Hop presence is a mildly citrusy grapefruit and tangerine blend with a refreshing subtle piney finish. The balance is quite decent and the hop character, while not as bright and vivacious as it could be, manages a substantial potency and when paired with a clean, flavorful malt profile generates a high drinkability. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Carbonation is very tame for the style. Soft wheat malty chewiness with a medium bitter, semi-dry finish. Body is medium for American IPAs, a notch low of medium overall. Alcohol presence is low/medium for the style. Carbonation doesn't have to be as laid back as it is- in fact, it might be beneficial to add some spritely character to the beer to brighten up the hop character and accent the wheat malt. 3.25

(Drinkability) As far as the wheat in this beer goes, it slightly thickens the body and texture for a smoother beer without sacrificing cleanliness. The hop character is bright but not as bright as it could be, the herbal and resiny characters distracted a bit from the main goal of this beer. I think this style has a lot of potential and this beer is certainly on the right track. With some slight tweaks to the hop presence and carbonation, this recipe can really be a winner. 3.75

A - cloudy orange with a huge rocky white head that gets pitted and chunky as it slowly settles, leaving tons of super sticky resinous lace on the glass.

S - Dusty aromas of earth and mineral-laden well water with sugar coated grapefruit notes.

T - classic grapefruit and big time pine with a thick malt backbone. Biscuity, fresh, sweetly fruity and bitterly hoppy. This is very tasty.

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: A cloudy medium bodied amber with a very subtly white head that is about 1/8". Looking at the body it is either too cloudy to see the bubbles or just for the moment "hidden".

Smell: Strong grapefruit skin scent that hovers your nose.

Taste: What a strong hoppiness to it, with a touch lemon if you think otherwise you should take another sip because it's definitely there. Grapefruit skin as well with strong hops all over the palates. Very well done.

Mouth: With a medium finish, smoother bitterness to it makes this hard to put down.

Overall: To knock this beer is tough, I like it and feels a lot like a poor man's imperial. It's bold and strong yet real easy to drink so when you want to introduce someone slowly to IPAs period this is definitely a must grab. Salud!
