A genre-blending mix of an American wheat beer and a traditional India Pale Ale. Encore is hopped and dry-hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops, and has a pleasant grapefruit aroma that compliments its subtly sweet malty backbone. Grab a lighter and get up front!

A: Thick and heavier than expected. Orange. Opaque. Creamier head than expected. Lasts longer than one would believe on an IPA as well.

S: Orange. Bitter Orange. Grapefruit. Hops.

T: Grapefruit. Orange. Wood. Almonds.

M: Too much aftertaste for my liking. Tastes like an unripe grapefruit.

O: Ok Magic Hat... again you disappoint me. However, this is one of the better ones I have tasted. (396 characters)

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Another new to me IPA from Magic Hat, acquired as part of the Magic Hat winter variety pack. Expectations are about average.

Poured into an over-sized wine glass.

A - Pours a light lemon color but appears bright orange in the glass. Two fingers of soapy off-white head. Fairly unexciting to the look at, but I suppose it suits the style just fine.

S - Smell is of grapefruit rind bitterness, some dusty malt, light grassy wheat, lemon zest, hint of yeast, and some dry soapiness on the finish. Again, fairly unexciting to smell, but suitable for the style.

T - Taste follows the nose: dry bready malts, some bitter grapefruit hops, lemon zest, hint of yeast, herbal earthiness, and a dusty grassy wheat presence. Poor depth of flavor and maybe just a tad too malty / bready.

M - Feel ends bitter, bready, and dry. Medium-full bodied with okay carbonation.

Overall, it is by no means a bad IPA, just a fairly ordinary one at best. Definitely drinkable and approachable, with a semi-higher-than-normal abv of 6.40%, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have this again.

Pour is a bright olden orange with a creamy white head. Nose has a fair bit of hops, citrusy and orange peel, like cream of wheat note behind. Taste has the same hop profile but a touch of a messy malt backbone. A bit spicy, assertive carbonation, medium body. (260 characters)

Pours a cloudy, golden-brown color with a thin white crown. A bit of froth is left on the inside of the glass as it goes down. The aroma definitely screams grapefruit as advertised, and I'm also picking up a plethora of grains and coriander. The taste is light and summery, while at the same time packing in a lot of tart and sourness. The finish is quite bitter, however I suspect in my bottle the hops have faded a little. (424 characters)

Pours a hazy sunburst orange with a tight, white head that leaves rings of lacing.

Smells of grassy and citrusy hops.

Tastes of the citrus character with a solid malt backbone. Hops come through first with notes of lemon along with some grass notes. This leads into some fruity notes. Malts come in and add a little caramel along with bread notes. Fairly balanced overall.

Mouthfeel is medium with slightly crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid IPA and fits in well with the Magic Hat lineup. (512 characters)

A: A lot of sediment on the pour. Hazy, dark orange tint. A fingers worth of head lingers on. Very unexpected here.

S: Grapefruit, orange zest, lite sticky caramel.

T: Grapefruit skin, pine sap, slightly woody aftertaste. Not much malt flavors.

M: A very lingering hop aftertaste after each sip. Kind of spicy like a rye bread. Good carbonation, very light on the tongue.

O: A good IPA, not the best, but one of the better Magic Hat limited / one-offs. (459 characters)

I picked up a case of the Magic Hat winter variety pack last week and this was one of the included beers. I started drinking these after I had already consumed copious amounts of Hamm's so I didn't bother reading the bottle. I really liked the beer, but could tell it was different than your average IPA. After picking this beer back up I discovered it's a wheat infused IPA, which makes sense when your sober.

A- Light orange and very cloudy like you would expect from a Hefeweizen. The head was white, about one finger thick, and laced nicely.

S- Mild citrus notes upfront followed by a funk aroma, most likely from the simcoe hops. I don't pick up any hints of malt.

T- Thick up front with loads of hop flavor. It has an amber character that fades into grapefruit and citrus with a little spiciness on the finish. You also get some grainy flavors from the wheat malt.

M- It's definitely on the medium-thick side in body from the wheat malt. It also has a smooth texture which is unique for the style. The carbonation was on the moderate side.

O- Overall, a delicious beer and unique twist on the IPA style. It definitely has the hop character you expect in an IPA, but with twist of wheat. It's thick and smoother than your average IPA. I'm going to have to brew my own Wheat IPAs in the near future. (1,310 characters)

Appearance: very hazy orange color with some particles floating around. There’s a soap-like head that’s about two fingers or so in height. The lacing is decent

Smell: Soapy hops -- really not much malt here, but it smells average.

Taste/feel: On the front there’s some massive citrus -- grapefruit sorts. Very bitter. Almost a medicinal flavor in there. The aftertaste is spicy with not much malt to balance it out. Decent beer, but it’s just not balanced enough for me. (480 characters)

Pours a slightly hazy deep orange with a thick foamy off white head. Smell is hoppy, sweet, citrus, and grapefruit. Taste is more subtle than expected, starts sweet and hoppy, with a slight bitter, and moves to a thick smooth bodied malt with a subtle hop finish and a strong grapefruit aftertaste. The mouthfeel is smooth, a great balance of flavor, very well done. Overall a very enjoyable beer with a lot of depth, and a bit different than the others out there. This beer is very enjoyable with great flavor. (511 characters)

Encore is brewed in the style of a American Wheat IPA. Available as part of the Magic Hat Winterland Variety 12 pack.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 49º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy, frothy white head over a very hazy copper-amber body. Retains quite well, dropping at the edges and leaving a thin crown with thin stringy and spotty lacing as it recedes. Lacing is thin and spotty. The wheat certainly has a lot of positive impact on the head quality as well as the body tone. An impressive appearance. 4.5

(Smell) A forward projection of mostly citrusy hops with a moderate malty background. Tart grapefruit, fresh tangerine and some lime rind are most forward. Some mild herbal and floral qualities are notable in the hop presence too. Some mild phenols bring out a mild alcohol aroma, making the aroma slightly less clean than it could be. The hop presence is this beer is very forward and the bitterness is perceivably substantial. Despite some bodily thickness, there isn't much in the aroma that would differentiate this wheat IPA from a pale malt-led IPA, wheat is likely a low player. Potency is high. 3.5

(Taste) The malt body does grow in presence in the aroma, with a soft wheat body and bready caramel sweetness. Hop presence is a mildly citrusy grapefruit and tangerine blend with a refreshing subtle piney finish. The balance is quite decent and the hop character, while not as bright and vivacious as it could be, manages a substantial potency and when paired with a clean, flavorful malt profile generates a high drinkability. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Carbonation is very tame for the style. Soft wheat malty chewiness with a medium bitter, semi-dry finish. Body is medium for American IPAs, a notch low of medium overall. Alcohol presence is low/medium for the style. Carbonation doesn't have to be as laid back as it is- in fact, it might be beneficial to add some spritely character to the beer to brighten up the hop character and accent the wheat malt. 3.25

(Drinkability) As far as the wheat in this beer goes, it slightly thickens the body and texture for a smoother beer without sacrificing cleanliness. The hop character is bright but not as bright as it could be, the herbal and resiny characters distracted a bit from the main goal of this beer. I think this style has a lot of potential and this beer is certainly on the right track. With some slight tweaks to the hop presence and carbonation, this recipe can really be a winner. 3.75

A - cloudy orange with a huge rocky white head that gets pitted and chunky as it slowly settles, leaving tons of super sticky resinous lace on the glass.

S - Dusty aromas of earth and mineral-laden well water with sugar coated grapefruit notes.

T - classic grapefruit and big time pine with a thick malt backbone. Biscuity, fresh, sweetly fruity and bitterly hoppy. This is very tasty.

M- big bodied, chewy, and actually somewhat creamy. Sits on the tongue like an anvil.

Excellent beer! Hits all the right notes for the style with aplomb. (543 characters)

One of the more unique and interesting floral noses I can recall experiencing. Hop tones burn interesting in a nearly mellow fashion. Interesting is the word that strikes me with this. Novelty beers that mix styles can come off as pretty lame; this does not strike me as such. Nice drinker. (290 characters)

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: A cloudy medium bodied amber with a very subtly white head that is about 1/8". Looking at the body it is either too cloudy to see the bubbles or just for the moment "hidden".

Smell: Strong grapefruit skin scent that hovers your nose.

Taste: What a strong hoppiness to it, with a touch lemon if you think otherwise you should take another sip because it's definitely there. Grapefruit skin as well with strong hops all over the palates. Very well done.

Mouth: With a medium finish, smoother bitterness to it makes this hard to put down.

Overall: To knock this beer is tough, I like it and feels a lot like a poor man's imperial. It's bold and strong yet real easy to drink so when you want to introduce someone slowly to IPAs period this is definitely a must grab. Salud! (819 characters)

12. oz Brown Bottle

A: Pours a hazy pale amber color with a nice thick white head. Good retention
and lacing.

S: Wheat and yeast leads to a grapefruit flavor and other citrus notes. Some dry
hops are also present.

T/M: Smooth and medium bodied starts off bitter from the hop oils and slowly
turns to a citrus taste. Grapefruit and other fruits are included. Yeast and grains
come in with wheat and other malts. Sort of unbalanced but easy to drink.

O: An interesting mixture of an IPA and a wheat beer. It's categorized as an IPA,
but really needs more hops to fulfill this. This is a good beer for people who like
Wheat beers and people who don't really like hop heavy beers.

Cheers!! (697 characters)

Poured from the bottle a hazy orange-gold with one finger of off-white head. A whisper of lacing left behind.

Aroma of wheat and light malts along with a hint of grassy hops and caramel.

The taste was quite different than expected. No real hop presence. Mainly caramel malts and wheat notes.

Medium bodied and smooth with a lighter carbonation.

A very "OK" IPA from Magic Hat. Give a boost to the hops and we might have something here. (439 characters)

A: Great pour. Hazy orange in color. Huge off white taupe head. Frothy and stuck around forever leaving an awesome, thick and haphazard lacing throughout the glass

S: nice citrus smell, mostly orange. Faint banana in there as well assuming from the yeast.

T: pretty decent taste. A little hoppy bite with citrus. Not much wheat components in the taste. Would say this was just a regular IPA if I didn't know otherwise. But that is not a bad thing.

M: digging the overall mouthfeel. Very crisp and bright and finishes mostly dry with a slight bitter aftertaste which is enjoyable.

Nicely done beer. Not a huge fan overall of MH beers, but this was a pleasant surprise. (674 characters)

Poured into a pint glass.

Hazy, matt, almost muddy gold with a nice bubbly white head that died off quickly. The lacing was nice while the head lasted, though.

Nose is aromatic. Honey with bready malts and a good measure of a pineapple-ish citrus. Hop aromas are rather subtle beside the pineapple, some pine and grassiness can be detected.

Underwhelming. The malts present in the nose were entirely absent from the taste. Hop flavours were stunted and rather uninteresting. Some citrus and some pine. A weird cross between grass and pineapple. Kind of like almost-stale Benson and Hedges cigarettes. Maybe it’s because I smoked earlier today, but the flavours are just muffled and… not really there.

Mouthfeel is decent, light with lively carbonation.

Overall not a BAD beer, but far from great. Very far. (815 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Purchased from a mix pack in Wakefield, RI.

A- Pours a hazy yellow-orange body with a huge white head that leaves some nice sticky lacing.

S- Earthy, malty, citrusy with an uninviting slight cigarette aroma. Nothing strong or anything that stands out.

T- Malt, caramel, slightly piney. Somewhat one dimensional. Lacking much hop character.

M- Medium mouthfeel/carbonation.

Where are the hops in this brew? For an IPA, there wasn't much hop presence. It was more like a weak pale ale. Mediocre at best. (553 characters)

As I pour a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass, a nice thick 1-2" off-white head appears atop a beautiful hazy/cloudy brew which consists of an orangish/gold outlining that leads towards a light brown center.... The head diminishes quickly, but has good retention and leaves nice lacing.

I take a whiff and get a lot of piney hops with citrus like that of grapefruit and orange... There's also some sweet caramel malt with a bit of woodsy and earthy notes.

The taste is mostly hoppy with spicy and citrus hops, along with a bunch of bready "wheat" malts.... There's just the slightest sweetness, as well.

I'd say this is a medium-bodied brew that is well carbonated.... It has a slick/oily feel going down, and leaves a dry, tart, citrusy aftertaste.

Overall, I think this is a very interesting and good brew.... You certainly get a little from both worlds of wheat and a decently hopped I.P.A... An easy and tasty drink that I think is a great concept. (954 characters)

Served in a Duvel glass because I am alone here today, finally, and so I can. Nice foamy head--about three fingers, which lingers--perhaps the beer's best attribute. Lacing ok. Amber orange in color. Cloudy, murky as I expected from a wheat beer. Smell some hops, pine, not much citrus. Taste the hops, but not too strong. Watery on the tongue, but can sense a little little oiliness. A dry finish I like even if I don't entirely understand the beer. (450 characters)

got this encore in a variety pack from magic hat. the smell is piney like an ipa but there is a little sweetness swirled in. it has a honey brown color, and is cloudy like a wheat beer. the taste is fresh and bitter, with a little caramel and a citrus kick. this isnt a huge tasting ipa, but it has enough of a kick to wake you up a little. there it some nice lacing left in the glass. not a bad effort at all from magic hat. (425 characters)

It pours a hazy orange with a light tan head that lasts about 45 seconds with moderate lacing. There are Aromas of fresh hops accompanied by citrusy, malty wheat beer aromas. It has a lighter mouthfeel with medium/heavy carbonation. The bitter hops are apparent immediately on the palate with notes of grapefruit and malt. It is a pretty straight forward beer with little complexity. (383 characters)
