Pours medium gold/orange with a big foamy head. Good head retention, some lace. Towering head and some bubbles in the glass. Pretty beer.

Citric hop aroma up front, some grain in the nose.

Hoppy up front, with grapefruit rind bitterness. Some wheat and unrefined bready notes. Bitterness creeps in at the end with a finish for the hops. The use of whet doesn't do much for me here - in fact it makes the brew seem like it is lacking something.

Carbonation and a medium body. A bit tingly.

Overall, not bad, but something I'd tire of fast. Grill beer or something to chase food with. Hops and bread, and not much else. But that is the nature of the brew. Still, it was ok.

Magic Hat Encore

Pours a hazed straw, appearing like an unfiltered wheat beer with a soapy head. Aroma of lemon peel, citrus, herbs and hay. In the taste, wheat malt coming across almost tart, with a moderate bitterness and leafy, oily resins. Lemon, pine, small grapefruit. Not over the top, quite in balance with the wheat taking the lead. Comes off somewhat juicy, essentially a hopped up wit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, well carbonated, little to no bite. Overall, a mixture of styles, a bit confused, but still decent.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours cloudy amber with 1/2 inch white foam, some resides. Sharp pine smell, evergreen. Pine cones. Hoppy full bitter taste wrapped around a lighter malt.

Interesting juxtaposition - sharp botter with a light wheat malt. Nicely blended, works really well together.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: Good frothing, hazed pale amber

SMELL: Leafy, spicy, hop oil, tangerine, fresh cut grass, bready, yeast, kiwi, esters

TASTE: Bitter, smooth, medium bodied, hop oil, herbal, tobacco, jasmine, earthy, mint, citric rind, grainy, yeast, vegtal, bitter semi-dry finish.

Decent, a bit unbalanced. The hop flavor takes over a bit too much. Sure you get your hop fix but it is a bit of chore to sip.

Found at Maggie McFly’s in Brookfield, CT as part of their modest craft beer list, this one shows a hazy yellow-tan color with a big fluffy head and decent lacing. The aroma gives off pleasantly sharp citrus wheat and mild floral toffee....not bad. The flavor brings bright citrus and woodsy wheat with a bit of a sunshine bite on the tongue. This is medium-light bodied with a crisp, refreshing feel that would be especially perfect for a summertime backyard refreshment. There is a slight aqueous quality but overall it offers full carbonation to fullfill each sip. I’m generally suprisingly pleased with this offering from Magic Hat and recommend it to anyone that enjoys a hop bite to their brews.

From the bottle, plucked from Magic hat's winter seasonal pack.

This one is billed as an American Wheat IPA and is exactly that. Pours a cloudy orange with a thick head that holds its own. I was actually a little worried after the pour, thought it might be a jumbled mess but it's actually an extremely well-balanced ale. Fruity nose balanced by lots of American Hops. It's kind of like #9 meets Sierra Nevada, which is meant as a high compliment. Silky mouthfeel, very easy to drink for a hoppy ale. A bit bitter and grassy on the finish.

Kind of surprised it was included in the winter pack, it seems like more of a summer beer. Maybe there's a double-entendre in the name, like one more blast of summer amid the schwarzbier and the porter in the pack.

This would be a go-to IPA if it were year-round brew. I actually prefer it to the Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip

Pours cloudy orange with a gorgeous fluffy 2 fingers of head that coats the glass and fades very slowly. Aroma is certainly hoppy, Amarillo really stand out. Really smells nice, inviting a first sip.

First sip is... nicely balanced. Huge hop flavor, I detect the cat-pee like Simcoe, with a nice crystal malt sweetness for balance. Finish is pretty smooth - I'd prefer a little more of a bitter kick in the teeth from my IPAs. Nevertheless, still a decent bitter aftertaste.

This is a nice example of an East Coast IPA. Hoppy yet balanced. Personally, not the biggest fan of Simcoe hops, but I still am enjoying this beer.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Hazy orange wheat color with a decent head for a bottle. Sticky lacing...
hoppy aroma, slight pine and grapefruit; taste like it smells.

Very unique IPA. Wheaty hefe meets ipa. I really like this, its deff worth a try.

A :Pours a cloudy/hazy yellow/orange color with a fingernails worth of head that surprisingly sticks around for a bit

S: Nice and hoppy, mostly grass and grapefruit rind with some nice backing malts. Pretty simple, but good

T: Same as the smell, pretty much solely grassy/earthy and citrus rind hops with a light amount of pale and wheat malts. Fairly bitter, but not too bad

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Slick yet oily

O: A good, easy drinking IPA. Nothing spectacular or different here, but it's easy to come by in the sixer (at least in the winter, obviously), and decently priced

Pours a dirty golden color, unfiltered so it is hazy. The head is small and wispy, leaves some nice lacing.

The aroma is of a musty floral hop that has some grapefruit notes. Some lemony sourness. Kind of has a musty homebrewed IPA aroma.

The hops standout nicely in the flavor. Good floral, grapefruit, and pine flavors. This goes along with a lemony/lime flavor. The malt is pretty neutral and just provides a bready base to showcase the hops.

The feel is moderate with fizzy carbonation. The beer has a hoppy bitterness on the palate and finishes with an asprin like dryness.

A good hopped up American wheat ale. Definitely worth a sample.

Pours a dark-brownish straw color with a finger of white head. There is only a mild hint of hops in the nose. Citrus upfront with a faint hint of wheat present. The finish is subtly hoppy. The body on this offering is not terribly hearty.

As with many other Magic Hat beers, the label is the best part of this offering.

Poured into a shaker pint: Big old souffle head, tapioca colored, over densely hazed burnt orange body. Lookin' damn fine. Chunks of scrappy lacing.

Punchy lemon & grapefruit in the smell, pulp & zest. Some sweetness hanging around just underneath. Smellin' good too.

Bitter citrus up front, too, more pithy. A little lemony sweetness, then turns to a tea-like dryness with & finishes, last really piney & bitter into the aftertaste. Not much malt character to speak of.

Refreshing, medium-bodied, & the finish is pretty dry & kind of tannic.

Pretty good showing here from Magic Hat - I'd had hoppy wheats before, but I think this was my first "wheat IPA". Can't say I really pick up on any wheat characteristics other than the appearance. Still a good drinker, with an assertive hop character & good body.

A - Color is a medium gold with an orange-ish tint. A little hazy with a white head that dissipates quickly.
S – Smells like grapefruit/tangerine…some pine notes.
T - pleasant grapefruit/citrus punch coupled with a sweet malty finish, not terribly overwhelming “hopped up” which is to be expected at the lighter end for IBU’s…I think it said 45 on Hat’s website. A bit more fruity than expected.
M – Smooth, medium-light body
O – Pretty good flavor profile going on here, refreshing. However, if you are looking for a blast of hops in an IPA this is not the one.

Poured from a bottle, hazy light orange with minimal head that dissipated quickly but with decent lacing. Smells slightly citrusy, but more fruity. Tastes clean and finishes semi-dry. Has an apricot/nectarine flavor mid-taste. Feels slick. Not bad, but a bit fruitier than expected.

12 oz poured into Shaker pint glass

A: a vigorous pour gives this beer a solid 2.5 finger golden white head. color is honey-gold with a slight haze from the wheat. head stays around for a while and forms peaks as it recedes

S: some sweet malts, with some citrus and floral hops and a slight wheat smell, almost adjunct-like

T: a smooth wheat and sweet malt taste at first, followed by a citric bite and then a smooth finish. bitterness lingers slightly, but is never intense.

M: it is light bodied, drinkable, maybe slightly undercarbed, there is also a slight chalkyness maybe to the beer, slightly offputting, but not gross.

O: This was a decent Wheat IPA. It cant stand up to a full standard American IPA, but it is nice. I'd like to try another Brewery's take on a Wheat IPA as it is an interesting style. I like it more than Black IPA's.

Sampled on November 27, 2011. It has a hazy, pale amber pour with a long lasting head that has an ice cream shake-like foaminess. The aroma is solidly floral hops with a slight citrus note. Not much wheat considering they tout it as an American Wheat IPA on the label. Medium body. There is a powerful eruption of bitter hops in the taste. As far as IPA's go, it is a winner. But if this is meant to be a Wheat IPA it does not seem to live up to the marketing. Still, I liked it and found it easy to drink.

I'm gonna give y'all a spoiler: I think this is an awesome beer. In a moment I'm going to go into the multi-part review, but first I need to say that this is one of the best IPAs I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. And with no further ado:

Appearance: It looks cool, and the appearance is still the worst part of this beer. Cloudy like a homebrew gone wrong, but an interesting peach color nonetheless. This isn't what beer usually looks like. Huge, sexy, frothy head that gets cloudy and chunky as it settles.

Smell: This is luxurious. It smells like a county fair made of fruit. Hay, a little bit of passionfruit (!), pears, overripe oranges. I love it. The Simcoe hops are magic, and pair with the base malts very well.

Taste: Pineapple and freshly-cut hardwoods. It tastes like a cedar mill and a can of fruit cocktail. A little sweet, but it manages to fully satisfy.

Mouthfeel: Good. Not too fizzy, not too flat. The mouthfeel is hardest to describe because it's in a good place; it doesn't detract from the flavor the way Hex (also from Magic Hat) does. Very supportive. It's not syrupy, but it's not too thin either.

hazy bright orange with a bright white sticky head. Smells hoppy, grassy, and citric. Very clean nose.

Slightly Different taste. Getting some pear and passion fruit taste up front. Nice change of pace compared to the normal citric flavors of IPA's. Finishes nice and dry with some balancing bitter hops. Super clean. This beer super surprised me. Not bad at all and would make a great session IPA.

Fruity, zesty, different, yet still IPA like. However I am getting none of that wheat.

Different, fun, and a nice change of pace. Not bad at all Magic Hat.

A: burnt orange a little cloudy and pours a mouth watering pillow of two finger clean white head.
S: a quite mild floral piney hop smell Emanates.
T: Medium bodied herbal piney with a mild bitter dry finish.
O: very solid beer from magic hat. It's a typical ipa that I would definitely buy again on sale.

M: medium average body

O: a nice wheat IPA, something you don't see often

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small white head and nice lacing. Love the contrast between the bright hazy beer and white head.

Loads of fruity citrus up front with sour gummy worms and fresh hop buds.

Sweet candy, lemon zest and a sticky citrus bitterness are held up by a hidden backbone of sweet grains.

Nice resiny hop coating feel with some dryness

Another delicious IPA on Tour

A - I would say golden wheat in color is apropos, turbulent streams of carbonation feed a thick rocky beige head with amazing retention

S - malty, wheaty, bready, backed up with a splendid hop profile, juicy grapefruit and pine to create a layered aroma

T - the wheat-ness of this IPA is ever apparent, a distinct grainy-breadiness that is a new (to me) twist on IPA and is welcome. beneath the fresh wheat flavor is a far more typical IPA hop profile, generic citrine flavors and some pine notes that spruce it up (get it?) even deeper is a cloying but discernible plain sugary sweetness

M&D - the underlying sweetness lends a smooth mouthfeel that combats the palate punch that the hop profile tries to land, mouth sticking and easy down, truly quaffable

Poured from 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Cloudy, orange/gold in color, with a nice, tight two-inch head of bone-white foam.
Aroma-Subtle citrus hop note, wheat.
Taste-Nice up-front hop bite, earthy, herbal hops following through to a lingering bitter finish. Spicy wheat notes. Nice hop flavor throughout. Cries out for a spicy food match. Tacos with plenty of picante or nachos with the works. Recommended.

I took a 12 oz bottle and poured into a fresh pint glass.

A. Cloudy reddish orange body with two fingers of sticky whitish head.

S. Grapefruit up front with fresh malts and co2.

T. Sweet fresh body with citrusy and tangy aftertaste.

M. Thick and cloying sweet mouthfeel with refreshing aftertaste.

Overall a decent ipa made with wheat. Too citrusy for my taste but rather too much for regular drinking.
