Beer added by: Brad007 on 09-08-2010

A genre-blending mix of an American wheat beer and a traditional India Pale Ale. Encore is hopped and dry-hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops, and has a pleasant grapefruit aroma that compliments its subtly sweet malty backbone. Grab a lighter and get up front!

Poured into a Duvel tulip

Appearance: Hazy, cloudy orange with some golden notes

Smell: Very interesting, citrus/tropical hops, hints of wheat, pale malts

Taste: Tastes like a very hoppy wheat beer (as it should!) - lots of tangerine, pineapple, and grapefruits - overall, I would describe it as pleasantly juicy - malts are on the sweet side, complemented by the hops

Mouthfeel: Starts off excellent thanks to how the wheat adds to the body - unfortunately, it seems to get more thin/watery as it warms

Overall: Very good drinkability, but this seems more appropriate for the summer - why is this a winter release?

I must admit that I am a fan of Magic Hat's IPAs. While I would have to say Encore is inferior to Blind Faith, I hope other brewers embrace the idea of hoppy wheat beers. Encore kind of tastes like they mildly modified Hocus Pocus (now retired, of course) and added a lot of hops to it. I approve.

Bought this for a buck 75 at local Giant Eagle. Best by date of Jan. 31st 2011.

Pours a very hazy orange-copper color. Lots of carbonation bubbles floating upwards towards an off-white colored head that has settled to a thin lace after about 5 minutes or so. Pretty good head retention.

The aroma leaves a bit to be desired. I'm not getting much hops at all. Not getting much from the wheat either. Smells more like an English ale than anything, only milder.

Taste is slightly hoppy up front, but the wheat malts quickly come rushing in making for a English pale/ipa type of beer. There's also a metallic/earthy aftertaste that I'm just not that fond of. There's some lingering bitterness on the back end.

Medium mouthfeel with a carbonation level that sits a bit on the high side for my taste.

I could drink a couple, but only if someone else paid for them.

Morey's Bottom Line: Not a big fan of supporting Anheuser-Busch, but I had a chance to try a single bottle for a cheap price. It's not the worst beer that I've ever had, but It's not very good either. Reminds me a bit of Yards Ipa...only not as good. To be fair, this beer is at the end of it's shelf life, but I'm not really a big fan of this one.

appearance: pours hazy and slightly opaque, more-brown than golden in color, light beads of carbonation, finger-thick bubbly foam, decent bubbly lacing.

smell: fresh floral hops, very sweet/tangy yet slightly dry aroma, notes of peach/apricot.

taste: hops are dry from the beginning progressing to a dry to the point that it is very slightly bitter in the finish, wheatiness taste fresh and adds body consistently throughout.

drinkability: while the aromas would suggest a more complex hop sensation, the dryness of the hops with the unfiltered body make this one consistent and palatable, definitely worth a try while it's still around.

Taste- medium on the hops to start. citrus sweet on the front of the tongue and bitter on the back. leaves a nice lingering bitterness

Mouthfeel- theres light carbonation, feels light and smooth

Drinkability- very easy to drink, seems like a good summertime beer.

i dont know if it was the remnants of my cold or what but i wasnt getting too much from the taste or smell. maybe ill drink another in a week and if its different ill rereview

My experience (beer in-hand) nearly mirrors Meerkey's description below. There were more qualities in the beer but unfortunately my bottle ran out and I'll have to update once I can find some more.

A= dark golden, nice white head when poured, lots of pooling and effervescence going on.

S= pine, red grapefruit, some bready sweet malts.

T= very nice, hops to the grapefruit side but not overwhelmingly so, some florals as well; slightly bready malts, very light honey notes, overall nicely balanced and helping to further restore my damaged image of Magic Hat's offerings in the mid-late 2000's.

M= dry yet with a touch of sweet balance, some hops florals and hints of bready malts.

D= very drinkable, would make great session or on-tap. Not an overwhelming IPA on the IBU scale but a solid entry and probably more widely acceptable among the non-hopheads.

A: Little bit of white head, cloudy, crystalized honey color, fades to a paler yellow on sides against the light.

S: Piney hops and ruby red grapefruit.

T: Yum. Lots of bitter hops, pine, grapefruit, some malts.

M: Tart, crisp, clean, refreshing.

D: Delicious. Best Magic Hat I've had so far.

Picked up a 6 pack at the local C-store. Hadn't seen this beer around my area lately but I have liked a lot of the other Magic Hats and since IPAs are my favorite I said what the hell.

A- poured into a beer glass a dark "honey" color. Nice two finger head with some decent lacing. Lacing stayed around at the top almost the entire time I drank the beer.

S- a light cedar smell with a hint of citrus. Smells like if you just put down some new hardwood floors and lacquered them with orange and lemon zest.

T- not an overly strong IPA but does have some bold flavor. With so many different palates from beer drinkers it is hard to really critique in this category.

M- really smooth and drinkable. Goes down smooth with a nice bite at the end characteristic of an IPA. The only negative i have here is that it is very thin.

D- has a nice bite but is very tasty. I really enjoy IPAs so the bite is what I live for!

Really nice beer overall. Nice to see Magic Hat creating good IPAs. Haven't really been disappointed by anything they have been doing lately.

Visited the brewery on 1/8/11. I was not pleased to find out that they had seemingly dropped the chocolate aspect out of the Feast of Fools formula (it is now just a straight up raspberry stout and not nearly interesting enough to make purchasing it worthwhile). However, I did really enjoy the new Encore IPA and ended up getting a growler of it. This is labeled as an American IPA but I had no idea it was actually a WHEAT IPA and the only wheat IPA I have had.

A - Pours cloudy and orange-amber like a white ale with a one finger foamy off-white head.

S - Citrus hops (mainly grapefruit) and grassy. Plenty of wheat in the nose as well and what was cleverly labeled "wet hay" a few reviews down.

T - Very hoppy and bitter. I was expecting more citrus flavored hops (which it does deliver) but it is mainly dominated by piney, earthy hops. I would say it was a bit TOO bitter and almost tart tasting, but I still really enjoyed it.

M - Finishes dry and the carbonation was slightly too high. At least you don't detect much booziness.

D - We were unable to finish the growler as we had been out in Burlington all night sampling, but it was still a great sipping beer. I probably wouldn't session it due to the bitterness.

Overall, this was a good IPA and I am glad to see that Magic Hat is making beers that interest me once again. I hope they keep going in this direction: good, simple, creative beers.

A - Pours a hazy golden-amber color with a nice finer of frothy off-white head. The head had decent retention and leaves behind some lacing.

S - Strongest aroma is of the citrus hops. There is also a more broad fruity element to the aroma. Just a touch of floral hops also in the mix.

T - Starts off with a fruity/citrusy flavor with a lot of hops. The bitterness really kicks in around the middle. The finish has some nice floral hops and some nice hop bitterness with a touch of citrus lingering.

M - Medium to medium-light bodied with a medium to medium-high amount of assertive carbonation. Starts off really tingly on the tongue. The dry finish gives a nice crisp feeling to the beer. Just a tad watery in the finish.

D - Very drinkable. Overall, the taste is good, it could just use a little something extra in the mix. The elements that are there are fairly well balanced. Very crisp and refreshing.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

This beer pours a very, very hazy deep straw color with about a fingers worth of head. Retention is poor, but lacing is great. The smell is great, it's dominated by citrus hops, but there's some heavy wheat smells in here too. Very good smelling. The taste is also great. Slightly resiny piney hops and citrus notes take the nose, but instead of a malt background, there's an inoffensive wheat background that lets the hops shine straight through. A hop lover's dream.

The mouthfeel is also great, it's thin for an IPA, and fairly carbonated. It works with the wheat feel, though. It's als overy drinkable, my glass didn't last long at all! Another great IPA from Magic Hat's IPA on tour series. I hope the next one, a Black IPA named Demo, lives up to the other three in the series so far.

Purchased as part of the 2010 Winter Sampler pack.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into globe glass.

A: Pours a cloudy gold/orange color with a thin head. Some lacing.

S: Fresh smell of citrusy hops. Grapefruit, grassy.

T: Unfortunately not as good as it smells. It has an odd bitter taste that stands out even above the hop bitterness. Muted tastes of citrus and hops.

M: Thin, watery, not very fulfilling.

D: Overall not bad in a pinch but there are numerous IPA's that I would select over this one.

A-cloudy golden yellow. very thin white head

S-very hoppy and very citrusy. i smell a lot of grapefruit, very strong. i'm impressed with this.

T-hits with a good amount of hops that quickly subside in to a bitterness followed by a citrusy after-taste. grapefruit tastes are in there as well. overall its not a bad IPA but its just mediocre...nothing incredible.

M-medium to high carbonation with a dry finish

D-hmmm not the most drinkable IPA. the taste just isn't that wonderful. its a bland forgettable attempt at an IPA that i'll most likely never want again. the tastes stay but who cares.

Stats: (according to website) 6% ABV / 45 IBUs.
Part of the "I.P.A. on Tour" promotion of Magic Hat.

Poured from bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Very orange and hazy, sticky lace and carbonated well. Not very fizzy, settles out just fine. The color makes it very inviting and looks like it will be very citrusy and hoppy.

Smell: Very pleasant citrus/floral scent and a slight scent of the hops. Almost fruity in its scent, but it is pleasing.

Taste: Great notes of orange/grapefruit up-front with a slight bitter tinge to it, settles out into biscuits and lemon. Seems that they wanted fruitiness at the beginning, then to settle into a slight bitter, biscuity finish. This fits well with the "American IPA" designation, as its rather floral and citrusy.

Mouthfeel: The bitterness prevents it from being perfectly smooth, but it is easy on the palate, not very thick or chewy. The bottle says 6% ABV, but that is not easily detectable.

Drinkability: Magic Hat describes this as being an American Wheat IPA that is wet and dry-hopped. It is very tasty, not amazing, but seems like a nice casual beer. I would definitely have another. It seems to be more of a summer-time IPA, but the fruit/citrus is a nice relief in the cold winter.

I see where they are going with this it's a clouded bottle conditioned citrus/pine hop bomb much like a Two Hearted ale, I can detect some Centennial hops with grapefruit pungency then I would dare to say Amarillo, Cascade, maybe Columbus. Okay I just checked and it's Simcoe and Amarillo. Pours a clouded deep honey golden hue with a big white head forming fine even coated lacing. Aroma has a super hoppy pungency grapefruit/juicy hoppiness coated with malt sugars. Not overly sweet or bitter a nice grapefruit biscuit combo that's quite nice. More east coast than west coast hop bomb but it's a solid flavorful player that was even better at the end of the fall season when this was released. Best by date on the neck is 1/31/11 so imagine what this was tasting like 2 months ago. Solid easy going carbonation doesn't overwhelm the palate nice hop bitterness slight resinous hop oils gliding across with each sip. Very nice probably my favorite thus far from the IPA on tour series and I can't picture the Black IPA beating this sessionable citrusy IPA, I will cheer for an Encore if the new owners want continue what's good from Magic Hat.

I got a twelve ounce bottle of this as part of a mixed sixpack at my local beer store. I'm not a huge fan of Magic Hat, but they are an interesting brewery and I'll always try a new IPA. This was typical of an East Coast IPA, not as hoppy and the hops leaning more towards pine than citrus.

Pale yellow color, a little cloudy and a lot of carbonation. Aroma, as mentioned earlier, is a pine, sticky smell. Flavor as well is piney and quite well balanced between hops, malt and alcohol. I'll definitely have another one of these when I see it again.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow color with a thin cap of head that fades to a ring

Aroma: Lots of fresh, piney hops with citrus and wet hay notes

Taste: Big piney hop notes upfront fading to a more grapefruit pith-like bitterness over a sweet malt body with a lingering, bitter finish.

The Rest: Body is on par for the style and drinkability is good. This is a pretty enjoyable IPA

Poured into a standard U.S pint glass.

Appearance - 1.5 finger head. Creamy, small foam bubbles and nice lacing. Murky orange color...looks like a combo wheat beer/IPA.

Smell - May be the best smelling beer I've ever sampled. A perfect combination of hops explosion and citrus.

Taste - Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful! Perfect combination of hops and fruity notes. The hops is strong and present but leaves a very smooth finish with little aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Very good.

Drinkability - Very easy drinking beer considering the very strong hops aroma and taste. NOt sure if the over-the-top hops/fruitiness would make having several of these too much or not.

Overall - One of the best IPA's I've had to date. Has some similarities to the Flying Dog Raging Bitch Belgian IPA, but the Magic Hat concoction may be a little easier to drink and APV is slightly less as well. I highly recommend this one for IPA lovers!!!

Appears a murky, orange toned amber with a small white cap that slowly fades into a tiny cap and thick collar. Spotty speckles of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of citrus right off the bat with grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, with a malt base of caramel, and biscuit.
Taste is of the aromas with a citrusy, hoppy, refreshing flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, zippy, balanced, and refreshing.
You go, Magic Hat! This one is a keeper!

Poured from bottle into Pint glass

A - Beer poured with a one and half finger white foam; foam was rocky in appearance and held very well; lots of quality lacing formed on the sides of the glass; the body was a cloudy orange color and too thick to tell if was alive with carbonation or not

S - This beer is packed with hops; I can smell the sweet flowery aroma well before I put my nose to the edge of the glass; pine hop notes & citrus (orange, pineapple) zest come up immediately; aroma is well-built into this beer, brewers did a fantastic job of concocting this brew; slight hint of lemon, but mostly hop and caramel blast to the nose

T - Hop notes and other tastes not as explosive as I expected; the flavor itself leaves a grapefruit tart/sourness on the tongue which immediately tickles both sides of the tongue; the flavor finishes in the back of the mouth with a full bitter taste that lingers well into the aftertaste; semi-light flavor but well-balanced; high hop taste comes up during 'retro-olfaction'; my mucus is currently experiencing hop overload

M - The feel of the beer is creamy and bubbly; the consistency of the beer holds from sip to swallow; the brewers at Magic Hat did a fantastic job of blending a complex amount of hops to strike a great balance of flavor

D - Encore is a well made beer; I liked it a lot and could definitely have a few more; this is the first Magic Hat I have had in a long time and I'm disappointed that I waited so long to have another

Appearance: Pours a darkish orange with about two fingers of white head that lingers for a couple of minutes.

Smell: Hops and citrus, not particularly strong but pleasant.

Taste: Nice hops upfront, not the most bitter of beers but this is a IPA/wheat hybrid so it shouldn't be. Definitely can taste the citrus. The beer just tastes really good.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth, light to medium body. Aftertaste fades quickly for an IPA.

Drinkability: Exceptional, the wheat aspects of this hybrid really make this beer extremely easy to drink.

Although not the most bitter or hoppy IPA, Encore is an interesting mix of a wheat beer and an IPA which makes it quite tasty and extremely drinkable.

Woody orange, oak, color and pretty cloudy, with a thin head that falls to film fast but sticks to the glass well...
The smell is hops, really coniferous hops and a really nice sour orange but isn't super strong...
taste is well balanced nice pine hop, not to floral but some nice flower notes has some orange notes as well that balance it out well, the taste is consistent all the way through and is really fresh...
it is very crisp the kind of thing that make you go ahh and smack your lips after the first drink...
a really really good IPA, isn't to floral which I like, very very drinkable I would buy a second.

Appearance: Pours a clouded, amber-gold body with a foaming, off-white head giving a lasting wispiness.

Smell: Modest malts, pale and wheaty, beneath fragrant hop notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pine blossoms, and a bit of pineapple.

Taste: A lightly bready, lightly sweet taste of tangy malted wheat and pale malts. I gotta say, even right at the beginning, the mouthfeel starts thinning out at a record pace. Hops yield citrus fruits, leaning towards tangerines, with some minor florals and ample bitterness giving this wheat ale an IPA leaning.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Essentially, it's a passable wheat with a decent IPA hop profile. Maybe not a home run, but at least a well-played single.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. Best before 31 March 2011.

A: Pours very murky, like lots of yeast or sediment is present. Opaque yellow-brown, ranging from a maple center to honey edges. Little head, but decent lacing.

S: Citrus and pine. Hops.

T: A damn good IPA. Crisp and clean, not immediately flavorful. However, very quickly a subdued citrus carbonation comes flooding in hounded by hordes of hops. Malt is present enough to contribute to a brilliantly balanced beer that is a real pleasure to drink. Yum! The aftertaste is quenching, lightly tart and bitter, and moreish.

M: Firm; not quite bready or biscuity, but almost. Enjoyable.

D: One of the best IPAs I've had in recent memory. A shame that it's a limited time only -- this is one of my all-time favourite Magic Hat brews. Absolutely recommended.

12 oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a standard pint glass. best by FEB 28 2011. "better luck next time" on the bottom of the cap. list on the website as "a wheat ipa hopped and dry hopped with simcoe and amarillo"

pours out a super cloudy hazy burnt orange color with a very nice looking creamy white retentive head. sticky lace covering every inch of the glass. looks exactly what i pictured a wheat ipa to look like.

lots of big citrus, piney, raw pellet hop aromas. bits of tropical fruit and a very light pale malt present. mostly hopforward aroma however. the hops smell raw and fresh.

very nice tasting big piney, citrus, raw pellet hops in the forefront, but towards the finish, the beer is ruined by this off flavored meaty, pukey, vegetable like taste. i might percieve this as the wheat interacting with the hops. if you can look past this, the hops make for a bitter resinous ipa, which is pretty impressive at 45 IBUs.

a nice fresh tasting ipa that goes down easy, but i wouldnt recommend it due to the off flavors towards the finish.
