Not a terrible black ipa, but still not great. Pours a light brown with small white head. Aroma is some roast, a good bit of pine, some light chocolate sweetness, and a bit of caramel. Roasty malt character with a slightly watered down taste, brief hints of citrus on the back end. Relatively light bodied, medium carbonation. Magic Hat continues to be a small step above some other, but not much else.

A-Pours an extremely dark color. Nearing black. Looks more like a stout than anything else. Head is very attractive. Frothy head that is not too tall but retains its minimal stature and remind me of a frothed espresso drink. Head laces like a dream as well.

S-Soapy hop aroma is the most prevalent scent. Also a mix of floral and pined hops with coffee roast. Plenty of coffee in the nose. The hop profile is not overly attractive however.

T-Still soapy. Like a cup of coffee that didn't have the soap washed out properly. Aside from that, the pine and grass hops are back. Plenty of coffee again, but the mixture of flavors doesn't work well.

M-Pretty light, good amounts of carbonation too. The feel is npt the problem here whatsoever. A bit creamy too.

O/D-Overall I did not love this brew. Flavors were coarse and didn't flow. I am all about raw flavors in my beer, but this one just didn't meld well within itself. Not too bad, but this beer is evidence why some people avoid Black IPAs. Flavors collide too drastically.

Pours a dark brown color with a bunch of small particles floating about. The head is a toasted khaki color, fairly dense and rocky. Some lacing left on the glass.

The aroma is not very strong, especially for an IPA of sorts. There are light hints of a roasted malt and a barely there hint of hops. There is a bit of a twang in the aroma.

There is a decent hop flavor. Some lime citrus and a leafy fresh hop. There is some cola and roasted nut flavor from the malt, kinda has a home brew flavor to it. Some sour tea like flavors round out the brew.

The feel is light and very carbonated. Sits fairly balanced on the palate, sort of twangy and bitter.

There is some decent flavors and the beer drinks fine. Is it a great "Black Ale", no, not close but its not bad.

From Magic Hat's Spring Variety Pack. Best by 4/30/11.
Claims to be a black IPA.

A: True to its description, it's really, really dark; dark brown/chocolate in color; light mocha/tan head, about 1/2 finger thick; leaves nice lacing, though

S: great aromas, with heavy malt; pleasantly surprised to identify notes of citrus and chocolate, with a touch of hops; kinda smells like a chocolate-covered oranges with a touch of bitterness

T: not sure what I expected, but I was unprepared for this flavor; roasted malt flavors are strong, with a slight bite from the hops; also a creamy yeast taste present; good, but not what I was looking for

M: creamy, as noted by the yeast in the taste section; not quite thick enough to be a stout or porter, but not light/biting enough to qualify for IPA; interesting

D: Pretty easy to finish; kinda got bored by the end of the glass, which surprised me considering all the unexpected characteristics of this beer; my tongue was caught between wanting more and being tired of the flavors

Love IPAs, but not really a huge fan of black ales. Here the black ale was more powerful than the IPA taste...thus the lower rating. It has a great first taste, but the aftertaste was very dark and not of the traditional IPA bite. A well brewed beer, but not my favorite.

From Tasting Notes... Poured from 12 oz bottle into CBS snifter. This was served slightly chilled.

A) Black with a finger of tan head that settled pretty rapidly to a dusting. There was some light lacing.

S) What I mostly got fom the aroma was deep roast, slightly burnt, with a little pine and grass. Not bad...

T) Quite a bit of roast and a charred flavor. Hop bitterness is present in pine and even lighter citrus. Pretty earthy flavors. The aftertaste lingers in a negative way.

M) Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. This had some tingle, more crisp than smooth. Slightly dry finish.

O) I can't say I enjoyed this all that much, but it was okay. I would not go out of my way for another bottle.

Magic Hat Demo Black IPA is a solid black beer with a bubbly light brown foam that has outstanding retention and lacing. It smells mostly of dark roast and licorice. It's grainy and grassy. The smooth medium body gets a little chalky toward the finish. There's lots of dark roasted flavor like you'd find in an Imperial Stout. There's a juniper bitterness that gets a little poisonous in the finish. This is not what I expect from something called a Black IPA. There wasn't really any hop aroma. A lot of the flavor seem to come from dark, complex malts. Call this something else.

[previous rating March 2011) Magic Hat Demo is a very dark brown ale that's nearly opaque. It's topped with a thin, bubbly, khaki foam that leaves outstanding lacing on the glass. It has a roasty aroma with a sweet caramel note. Coffee and chocolate are present, along with a hint of grassy hops. It has a foamy medium body. The finish is a little astringent. It's pretty sweet and quite chocolatey. There's a healthy amount of green bitterness in this. There's an sftertaste of dark chocolate. It's pretty good, but ultimately the flavors don't work very well together.

From the mixed 12 pack, poured into a pint glass, the beer is dark brown a beige head and tons of sediment. Is that supposed to be in there? It covers the bottom of the glass and is suspended through out.

Roasted malts and dark fruit in the nose. For a black IPA, I'm not getting many hops.

The taste is of roasted malts, a bit of coffee, raisins and brown sugar. This would be a decent brown or black ale, but I do want a few hops in my IPA.

The mouth has heft, but the sediment is course.

All-in-all, this was a bit of a miss for me.

Chestnut colored and opaque with ruby highlights. An oatmeal colored head of low froth rises up minimally and settles slowly leaving legs of lace.

Low aroma of cocoa and caramel, hints of tangerine. Hops morph to pine in the finish. Hints of marshmallow, finishes with a nutty, buttery ringwood nuance. Fairly well-balanced, but leaning more toward malt than hops. Not overly complex. Even mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, finishes slightly tingly. This is a slightly above average beer, fairly tasty, but also pretty forgettable.

I had a sixteen ounce pour of this at the Amsterdam Ale House in Manhattan's Upper West Side. It was listed as a Black IPA, which I thought was a little bit of an exaggeration. Not quite as hoppy as that.

Color was very dark with a dark head as well. Nice carbonation at first but it dissipated pretty quickly.

Aroma was of light hops and some dark roast. Not bad but i wished I was getting more from it.

Flavor also featured some roast and a little bit of hops. The balance was good but the overall flavor was not among my favorites.

Overall an ok beer. Try it if you see it but didn't blow me away.

12 fl oz brown bottle, served in a tumbler.

Caramel brown in color beneath a semi-intact, creamy off-white head; average retention that leaves a ring of soft lace.

Mild coffee, soft semi-sweet caramel. Floral hop aromas highlighted with saffron and licorice spice.

Flavors are more of the same from the aromas: milk chocolate, caramel, and coffee up front. Big, floral hop middle with an astringent bite that leaves an herbal, licorice aftertaste.

Medium in body; rough, astringent, and overly carbonated.

The flavor profiles are a little unbalanced and the mouthfeel isn't quite flattering. A decent stab at the style, but not my first choice.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is dark brown with a small tan head that settles fast. Leaves some lace.

S: Leafy, herbal, earthy hops over a touch of malt. Not terribly strong in the nose.

T: Doesn't really taste much like an American-Style Black Ale; at times I think Rauchbier or Schwarzbier, at other times I think Porter. . . . There's some char or charcoal, a touch of roasted barley malt and leafy hops at the finish. Neither as chocolatey nor as roasty as I like for the style. And while we're at it, not as hoppy either - at least, not the juicy, citrusy, piney (American) hops I like.

M: Body is light-to-medium in heft. Carbonation is too active and sharp, not at all creamy and smooth.

O: The beer is OK. I had a few of them and wasn't disgusted by that. But they didn't really hold my interest either. Overall impression: there are much better beers of this style.

Coffee black. Foamy head, eggshell color. Holding okay. 3.5

Baltic porter-like in the nose. Roasty with dusted cocoa and coffee in the nose. Earthy malts and herbal hops. 3.5

Very roasty and showing a lot of booze. Salty mineral notes with obvious coffee and chocolate. Strange wheat cereal in the finish. Sparse berry notes, but an otherwise dry black ale. 3.5

Medium carbonation and a medium body. Drinkable but with a booziness. 3.0

Average black ale. More malt bitterness than hop bitterness and obscured hop flavors. Bit of a misnomer. 3.0

This beer isn't bad. Looks are good... Big inch high tan foam head, great looking lacing, and decent head retention. The beer itself is deep brown in color and somewhat hazy, from what I can see given the dark color. Aroma is of chocolate, licorice, caramel, and leather. Hop aromas are fairly faint. Taste is comprised of mainly chocolate mixed with tobacco and piney hops. Maybe some residual citrus rind. This also has a bit of an earthy feel in both smell and taste. Texture is chalky, kind of resinous, and dry. Medium, even bitterness is evident. I would appreciate a fuller body on this. Along with that a thicker malt base would be welcome not to mention some more flavor hops. I wouldn't be against having this again at all, but I've definitely had superior black ales/IPAs. This beer has a lot of separate parts that could come together more seamlessly. So, overall, not bad and not great.

A: Pours a near black with a frothy tan head.

S: Hints of coffee and chocolate with a piney twang.

T: Watery burnt coffee flavor up front finishing with a subdued smack of piney hops.

O: This brew is kind of middle of the road but definitely worth a try.

Review adapted from notes taken 4/11/11

Appearance: Dark brown with a thin but nice little head, good lacing

Smell: A dull burnt character - overall, very mildly roasted and burnt - a hint of grassy hops - seriously lacking in hops and chocolate that seem more appropriate for the style - this could probably pass for a porter

Taste: Similarly underwhelming - roasted, burnt, a hint of vanilla, some chocolate, some sweetness - NOT a bad beer, but also not a good example of an American Black Ale - lacks complexity

Mouthfeel: Medium body, crisp, nicely carbonated

Overall: I'm usually generous with Magic Hat, but this... this is not great

I'm hoping this is just a "demo" and that this beer will not actually be rotating. It tastes more like a weak porter than the style it is supposed to represent.

The most interesting offering in a Magic Hat sampler pack. I can taste that very similar ingredients were used in all the beers, perhaps just used in different amounts. The scent has a nice sharp punch of hops that doesn't last very long in the flavor.
The over all flavor profile/drinking experience is that of a thin porter. Cola-like sweetness along with some bitter coffee edges.
Soapy flavors and textures are there.
Middle of the road type stuff.

Very dark brown to, indeed black in color. Quick head. Jus a little foam after a couple of sips.

A bit creamy on the roasty malt end. Very toasty too. Heavy on bread crust. Maybe some earthy hops.

Roasty malt and mild hop bitter bite upfront. The roast takes on a nice roasted coffee quality. But the palate lacks body and gets watery from the middle to the finish. Good roasted and toasted malt bill though. Easy to drink and enjoy.

Poured this into a pint glass. Not sure what to make of it, sold as an IPA but resembles a porter in appearance. Very dark brown, even black with a reddish hint. Great creamy heady. Smell chocolate, burned sugar, molasses, coffee and some citrusy hops. Taste of coffee dryness up front coats the mouth preparing for some chocolaty sweetness then the coffee blends with hop citrus in the finish. Not sure what to make of it, a bit on the light side but a good session brew.
