Demo is a deliciously dark lick of an India Pale Ale. It’s medley of roasted malts and heady hops will have your senses dancing to the beat of a different I.P.A.

I guess this is the last beer on the IPA on tour and since most offerings were good I picked it up.

A - Wow a nice murky brown which I didn't expect with a nice inch of head that turns to a sticky ring.

S - Nothing really stands out, mild roast malts with a touch of chocolate... no hops? Isn't this suppose to be an IPA?

T - Well it's not bad. Nice taste of mentioned roasted malts maybe a bit of chocolate but hops taste pretty subdued. Slight if anything.

M - Light to medium, pretty drinkable.

D - Not something I would pick up again. I really liked the Encore better and hoped this was kind of like this, if anything a black IPA but with roasted malts to the extreme it doesn't seem to even be IPA or Black IPA. Still pretty good and better than BMC.

Best by April 30, 2011 on bottle. 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a murky, dark brown color with a good sized foamy, light brown head. Head dissipates to a thin, tan cap that sticks around and leaves good foamy lacing.

The nose isn't all that strong and consists mainly of a roasted malt aroma. At times it seems like I can pick up some hints of chocolate or coffee but when I look for them again they're gone. No real hop presence.

The taste is more of the same. Roasted malt is prominent and sometimes seems like its the only flavor. Some, and by some I mean very little, hop flavor towards the finish, maybe some slight pine notes. Finishes with a burnt flavor I can't quite put my finger on.

Medium carbonation with a body that is on the higher side of medium gives it a full mouthfeel. Definitely a heavier beer for the style, although not too heavy relative to other beers.

Drinkability is ok. It's not a terrible beer, but it isn't that good for a beer of its style. Definitely somewhere between a brown ale or a stout with a little bit of hops.

Chestnut colored and opaque with ruby highlights. An oatmeal colored head of low froth rises up minimally and settles slowly leaving legs of lace.

Low aroma of cocoa and caramel, hints of tangerine. Hops morph to pine in the finish. Hints of marshmallow, finishes with a nutty, buttery ringwood nuance. Fairly well-balanced, but leaning more toward malt than hops. Not overly complex. Even mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, finishes slightly tingly. This is a slightly above average beer, fairly tasty, but also pretty forgettable.

Pours a dark brown/black color with a one-finger head into my glass. Not quite as black as it should be.

Aroma is a mix of roasted malt and slightly musty/grassy hops. Not too bad.

Lots of roasted malt and a disappointing hop profile to greet the tongue. Overshadowed by the yeast, which adds an undesirable buttery character to the beer.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering butteriness followed by grassy hops and dark malts.

Why did they even bother?

Pours a dark brown color with a bunch of small particles floating about. The head is a toasted khaki color, fairly dense and rocky. Some lacing left on the glass.

The aroma is not very strong, especially for an IPA of sorts. There are light hints of a roasted malt and a barely there hint of hops. There is a bit of a twang in the aroma.

There is a decent hop flavor. Some lime citrus and a leafy fresh hop. There is some cola and roasted nut flavor from the malt, kinda has a home brew flavor to it. Some sour tea like flavors round out the brew.

The feel is light and very carbonated. Sits fairly balanced on the palate, sort of twangy and bitter.

There is some decent flavors and the beer drinks fine. Is it a great "Black Ale", no, not close but its not bad.

Part of the new sampler pack, the new spring beer for Magic Hat. Seems like Black IPA's are the new rage around the breweries, and now that it has become one of my new favorite styles, can't say I really complain.

Pours a very, very dark brown with a tannish head. Smell is of roasted malts. Taste is medium bodied, very stout like. Almost no bitterness or hops can even be detected. Has an almost sweet sort of taste to it, like cocoa powder or coka-cola. Definitely doesn't taste like an IPA and tastes kind of confused overall. I like the style, and this is drinkable for sure, but for me Magic Hat missed the boat here... way too much of a mess.

I like the idea of a black IPA as long as its done as an IPA. This looks nice with a fluffy white head that laces all the way down. Aroma reminds me a weak IPA but I was thinking this might be one of those with a stronger taste. Alas I was disappointed by the lack of hops in the taste. Tastes more like a hoppy stout than an IPA. I'm kind of a hophead though so maybe I'm being a little hard on it. Its decent but I wouldn't get it again.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other IPAs that Magic Hat comes out with though because I know they do good things. I dont think IPA when I think Magic Hat but I will check out their others.

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.

L - dark brown color with a tight beige head that left a decent amount of lacing behind.

S - roasted malt and a hint of cocoa powder, no real aroma of any hops.

T - roasted malt sweetness upfront with the slightest hint of bitterness midway with an odd bitter to sticky sweet finish.

F - medium bodied with a crisp feel.

D - it went down easy.

The most interesting offering in a Magic Hat sampler pack. I can taste that very similar ingredients were used in all the beers, perhaps just used in different amounts. The scent has a nice sharp punch of hops that doesn't last very long in the flavor.
The over all flavor profile/drinking experience is that of a thin porter. Cola-like sweetness along with some bitter coffee edges.
Soapy flavors and textures are there.
Middle of the road type stuff.

This is my first Beeradvocate review, I chose to start with this beer because I was absolutely shocked to see the poor reviews it is receiving. Magic Hat's Demo is one of the best new beers I have tasted in a long time.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown/black with a creamy head about one finger width that lasts for the whole beer.

Smell: Smells of hops, chocolate, roasted coffee and roasted malt.

Taste: Excellent. A cross between the smooth richness of a stout with the floral bitterness of an IPA. Strikes an excellent balance between sweet and bitter.

Mouthfeel/drinkability: Highly carbonated, yet smooth. Has a somewhat thin mouthfeel, but the creamy head and rich flavors add a certain depth. Not quite a session beer, but certainly not too heavy to polish off a six-pack.

Appearance -- Pours a rich dark hue with a fizzy khaki head. LOTS of chocolate brown sediment.

Smell -- Burnt malt, cocoa, brown sugar, and spearmint. Smells very much like a garden variety porter. Not bad, but where is the hop aroma?

Taste -- Burnt malt, coffee grounds, ash, mild molasses sweetness, dry grass, and citrus zest. Lingering flavors of burnt toast and grapefruit pith.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-light in body, ample fizzy carbonation. Not that great.

Drinkability -- IPA must still be on tour. As a general dark beer, it's average, but to claim that this is a Black IPA is a stretch. Beyond not having enough hop assertiveness for an IPA, the malt is so burnt and ashy that it's difficult to finish. Not a fan.

I havent particularly a fan of Magic Hat but this one puts me back in the mindset of being willing to try more.

Nice soft brown, hazy color, slight head.

Malty nose, a little floral, a little yeasty.

Good malt backbone for the style, maybe a little lacking in lasting flavor. Good carbonation. Very drinkable. A good gateway beer so being in the mix case is a good idea. It could use a little more hop in the flavor though.

This beer pours a dark brown with extremely thin white head that disappears almost immediately

The smell is all roasted malt like its a porter or a stout, there is no evidence of hops in this beer at all.

the taste is pretty close to the smell, all malt and roast malt to the taste there is no bitterness and no hops. Did they forget to add the hops to this beer?

mouthfeel is a little above avergae and drinkability is average. if you are looking for a basic stout or porter by all means pick up a six pack, but if you want a good black ipa go with hoppy feet

12 fl oz brown bottle, served in a tumbler.

Caramel brown in color beneath a semi-intact, creamy off-white head; average retention that leaves a ring of soft lace.

Mild coffee, soft semi-sweet caramel. Floral hop aromas highlighted with saffron and licorice spice.

Flavors are more of the same from the aromas: milk chocolate, caramel, and coffee up front. Big, floral hop middle with an astringent bite that leaves an herbal, licorice aftertaste.

Medium in body; rough, astringent, and overly carbonated.

The flavor profiles are a little unbalanced and the mouthfeel isn't quite flattering. A decent stab at the style, but not my first choice.
