A: into a goblet, deep ruby brown ale with a brief tan head about a finger high; slimmed to a collar, left no lace

S: deep fruits of a dark sort, ripe and full

T: the advertised date and fig flavors are right there, along with a lighter tone of yeasts and sinewy malts; some sherry-like tones and treacle sweetness; no bitterness - light and sweetly fruity

M: very thin and slippery, very light on the tongue, faint vapors of sweet, light booze

O: it's hard to wow me with the apperanace of a brown ale, and I'm not particularly constrained by style-specific expectations, but I try to acknowledge their presence... That said, I thought this was a delightful BSDA, probably with a thinner feel and lighter flavor palette than say, a Maudite or a Gulden Draak - it was refreshing and easy drinking, and had no dankness/muskiness that I have found in some. It reminds me most of DFH's Raison D'Etre, but lighter in feel and flavor. This worked in my favor, based on my predilections in the style, but may be contrary to those fans of Chimay (Blue) or Delirium Nocturnum, or a more traditional BSDA.

Appearance: Poured into a goblet. dark caramel that was slightly cherrywood. near the end of drinking when more light shined through, it was more red. small bubbles, very little head to the point where i was afraid that i might not have gotten it home safely.

Smell: Chocolate was the first smell, dark sugar the ever present "Magic Hat" sweet breakfast cereal that you either love or hate that i haven't found a good description for. dark fruit as it settles the back of the nose.

Taste: at first i get roasted malt bitter which made me think that i was going to come thing in the direction of a porter but it goes quickly to nutty, candy taste that dissipates to bananas nutmeg. slight bread aftertaste. if you have ever had rice pudding at an indian restaurant it has the taste of the trilogy, cinnamon, cardamom and ginger. If not for the dark roast bitter coming though this would be almost like drinking syrup.

Mouthfeel: Paints the tongue like a good soy sauce. would be overwhelming if not for the carbonation.

Overall with all the things that could go wrong they pulled it off. which is why i gave the 4.5. iT could have easily been too sweet, but the carbonation, and the roasted darkness bitterness pulls it right back in. Hids the 8.2 candy up front, bark fruit half way down drink the glass. and a spiciness that lingers as an after taste. If you like Hops, don't like sweet beer or you're more into straightforward beers this might not be If you like the taste of middle eastern or Indian food you'll be over the moon for this beer.

I had this American Quad during a recent tour of the Magic Hat Artifactory, and was pleasantly surprised. I had not really loved any Magic Hat beers lately, but this first visit to the brewery I liked the quad and the Ravell.

A: Reddish dark color, but not solid red

S: A lot going on with the aroma - with different fruits, sugary, and a precense of alcohol.

T: Pretty sweet tasting brew, that mirrors the smells, lots of fruits, like pear, and plums.

O: Pretty good beer, I would buy this if it was added to the rotation.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, prune, pear, fig, date, caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, dark candi sugar, brown bread, clove, banana, chocolate, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, pear, fig, date, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, dark candi sugar, chocolate, clove, banana, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, dark candi sugar, brown bread, chocolate, clove, banana, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester flavors; with big robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong dark ale! All around awesome complexity, balance, and robustness of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Had a glass at Magic Hat at the Vt Winter Gathering.

Right on the line between red and brown, with a decent head.

The nose was mostly figs and dates.

The taste was of dark dry fruit with a dry sweetness.

Great mouthfeel, nice and rich. A real easy drinker.
