I t's been awhile since I have had a Magic Hat brew so I got this at Tylers in Durham yesterday.Poured a clear medium golden with a thinner frothy white head atop.Honey and alcohol infused sweetness with fresh pilsner malt in the nose.Quite sweet up front on the palate with alot of honey and sweet dough,a tinge of iron with a good shot of leafy drying hop in the finish.A nice new offering from Magic Hat,it's pretty big with a good hop profile.

Frosted brown glass I've never seen any of their Humdinger series available, this was a go to when I saw it. Bright green lettering stating their Over the Pils. Corked and caged, it let out some carbonation when released the body is a beautiful clouded golden orange color with bright off white head forming thick rising well above the rim of the glass. Aroma has a perfume like mist of citrus fruit, herbal grassy layers, and pungent ripe fruit. Big alcoholic layer of robust pils comes off with the first sip, extreme herbal grassiness with loads of hop bitterness to get over the pils comes through. Alcohol, ripe fruit, mango maybe, with herbal/grassy bitter layers of hops come abound onto the palate. Mouthfeel is dry with herbal grassy leaf filled bitter notes of hops onto the palate, with an ample fervent of carbonation. Medium bodied with a bit of cloying qualities to ground things down. Overall impression, leaves me with a super sweet note for an imperial pils of bread filled biscuit malts it's actually hard to turn away from.

750ml corked and caged bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a very cloudy orangish amber with a one finger dense white head. Very opaque beer, tough to see any visible carbonation. Leaves some nice lacing on the side.

S: Has an aged aroma too it at this point. Hops seem faint and are just barely holding on. Malts come out as it warms up adding a bready quality.

T: More bitter than expected, the hop flavor has stuck around well. Grassiness and a bit of a farmhouse flavor to it. Light malting makes up the backbone. Alcohol is well hidden.

M: Medium body with low carbonation. Has a creamy mouthfeel. Bit of a warming feeling to it.

Overall was tough to pass up at half price and I'm glad I gave it a go. Have seen it on the shelves for a while and pulled this one from a new case. Hope Magic Hat continues this Humdinger series.

On tap at Sawmill Taproom in Raleigh

A - gold with a big, soft, white, foamy head that has great retention

S - funky with a sour milky character and an underlying grassy hop character

T - very bitter, a bit of toasty malts, grassy, herbal

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is overly bitter and unbalanced. The nose was sour and definitely unpleasant. None of the off aromas carried into the flavor, but the flavor itself was disappointing. I'll pass in the future.

My local shop has this on tap and I was able to get a 32oz growler fill for 6.50.

A - Fairly good carbonation at leas a 1/2 inch of sticky white goodness and a nice clear bright yellow hue of beer.

S - Smells mostly of mild hops, a dash of lemongrass, and maybe some pills malt in there. Smells good.

T - A fairly hoppy Pills with some mild yeasts and pills malt in the flavor but overall it taste much lighter than 8%. Hoppy finish gives it a nice crisp finish.

M - Medium bodied and a bit bitter but somewhat enjoyable.

Overall worth the price I paid for it on tap and it seems easy enough to get down despite the hoppy finish (or grainy even). Not worth the bomber prices which in PA are 11-15 dollars. If I paid that much I guess I would bash the review too...

On-tap 5/26/2013 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a bright gold color, with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains lager yeast, citrus, caramelized malts and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. Then some breadiness comes in from lager yeast and a thin malt character. The hops presence starts out weak but strengthens greatly as you continue to drink the beer and creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer worth drinking for a while but there are better alternatives within the style.

750ml bottle purchased as a single from Savemore Discount Beverage, Clifton Park, NY. Corked and caged.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" blonde head over the cloudy almost opaque golden amber brew. Head holds on very nicely, with lace that lasts until the cows come home. Aroma is sweet and fruity.

Taste starts sweet, moderate citrus in the middle, bitterness comes on through the close, but not as much as I would expect for an "imperial pilsner". Mouthfeel is way smooth, and drinkability is superb. While I question the style tag, I can't deny I like this brew.

Pretty golden body with a creamy finger of head.

Nose is grassy hops with a distinctly sweet note.

Flavor starts out sweet, then sort of spreads it around a bit. Grassy hops, candi sugar, tart lemon, clean finish.

Mouthfeel has a bit of the old "Sweet-Tart" quality to it. Leaves a tingle on the tongue.

Overall, pretty good, but too sweet. I long for an overhopped Imperial Pils with a Pliny-like understated malt body. Maybe someday I'll brew one.
