Appearance: Beautiful reddish orange/brown.
Smell: Not much of one.
Taste: Crisp. Rye. Bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Carbonated, thick, and refreshing.

This is an enjoyable IPA. The rye is clearly there, but not overwhelming. The hops are there, but a bit duller than many American IPAs. Its maltiness stands out. It's an interesting drink, with an interesting bitterness to it. I would probably get it again.

12oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

Cloudy amber color, two fingers of head. Hoppy aroma of grapefruit, lime pith, minty, pineapple, fresh grass, and nutty yeast. Very smooth, mildly spicy rye, orangey hoppiness, semi-agressive bitterness, peppery, warming alcohol, pineapple pulp, grapefruit rind, faint diacetyl, vegtal, cherry skin. Long hoppy finish.

Subtle on the rye or at least compared to other rye beers that have been a bit heavy handed. Very much an IPA, perhaps one of the best brews Magic Hat has come out with in a while.

Active, lush, off white head of foam. Copper brown in color with active carbonation bubbles. Well balanced aroma of rye and hops on the nose. The interplay of rye and hops continue in the taste. I think the rye wins out a bit. Very light, smooth mouthfeel. You could easily enjoy a few of these over an evening.

Poured into pokal in respect of the hybrid style. Dimly translucent orange-brown with a moderate white head that fades slowly leaving fine lacing in dense rings.
Smell is toasted grain, rye, piney hops.
Taste starts out nicely; delicately bitter piney hops dance with spicy rye grain and clean malt, before it all washes down leaving a nutty aftertaste that is a bit disconcertingly sweet, but the lingering hop bitterness balances it enough to be ok. Aftertaste is surprisingly clean with how much is going on in the flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium and creamy, nicely carbonated, easy drinking.
Overall, the rye grain really shines in this one, although whatever that sweet bit of the aftertaste is is a little odd. But I guess it wouldn't be Magic Hat without something a bit off. I jest though...#9 may be crap but this one's not half-bad.

12 oz bottle from IPA mix pack (thanks BH).

Pour is lightly hazy, deep reddish-brown in color, and covered with a large and very durable tan head. The glass remains coated with sticky lacing long after the beer is gone.

Smells as expected -- like rye + IPA -- but with a better and more appetizing aroma, probably due in part to a proper dose of sweet malts.

Very nice flavor with spicy rye, sweet and toasted malts, and hops in good proportioned.
I see some rather low ratings for this beer which I suspect are due mainly to a less aggressive hop profile than some prefer.

Medium body and medium+ carbonation with a lively feel and a unusually dry finish.

O: One of the best I've had from Magic Hat. Recommended, and highly recommended at this price point.

Light tan head that is smallish about an inch on a pint glass which settles to a nice lacing above a cloudy honey copper colored beer.

Heavy rye grain and earthy aroma with just a bit of citrus hops along for the ride.

Heavy rye taste with its drying effects in full force along with a lighter other grains and even to a lesser degree some hops tagging along.

A big drying aftertaste with a bit of the rye tastes sticking around on this medium bodied beer.

It seems rye is the new hops, what I mean by that is it seems that rye has a lot of the same characteristics as a lot of popular American hops for its big bold flavor additions and drying attributes and the way they make beers not boring like we were pretty much forced to endure with the big companies out there.

Sitting thick and cloudy, this brew is somewhere between copper and bronze on the color spectrum, sort of a heavy orange-brown. A soft, creamy orange-tinted tan head rests at one finger almost the entire time there's beer in the glass. Lacing starts with a ring and is left in a thin, tattered sheet through the middle, then the thin foam that does remain continues to leave behind some patching.
Rye spiciness and earth pour out of the bottle upon opening along with raw, floral hops that also give a hint of a slightly herbal bitterness. A smidgen of caramel and breads make their way out, but the focus is mainly on green, leafy hops, and rightly so.
The bitterness is pithier on the palate, and the character changes a little from the nose in translation to the tongue. It's almost what I'd expect if a baker was going for pumpernickel and (somehow) accidentally got more of a sourdough. It reminds me of bitters used for mixed drinks. It's still hoppy, leafy and raw, but it goes off a little.
Fluffy and creamy with a strong crisp bite all the way into the finish, the mouthfeel never lets up much. It flows like silk for awhile, supported by a strong but not overly strong carbonationin a solid medium body.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled Jan 07 2013.

A: Pours an opaque ruby orangish amber with a 1 finger off white head. Can barely make out any visible carbonation, quite a hazy brew. Lacing is pretty good on the glass.

S: Aroma is almost like being in a brewery. Heavy wet grain sort of aroma with a touch of sweetness. Also a citrusy hops bring up the tail end

T: Rye comes through with a bold assertion. Not as hoppy as most IPA, perhaps due to its age. Reminds me of a west coast amber ale with loads of rye. The hops that are present are citrusy and earthy with a touch of spiciness.

M: Medium to full body with decent carbonation. A bit sticky on the finish but nothing too bad.

Overall wouldnt mind trying a fresher one next year but isnt something to go on a hunt for. I've always been partial to Rye beers and this is a nice example.
