look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Poured into pokal in respect of the hybrid style. Dimly translucent orange-brown with a moderate white head that fades slowly leaving fine lacing in dense rings.
Smell is toasted grain, rye, piney hops.
Taste starts out nicely; delicately bitter piney hops dance with spicy rye grain and clean malt, before it all washes down leaving a nutty aftertaste that is a bit disconcertingly sweet, but the lingering hop bitterness balances it enough to be ok. Aftertaste is surprisingly clean with how much is going on in the flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium and creamy, nicely carbonated, easy drinking.
Overall, the rye grain really shines in this one, although whatever that sweet bit of the aftertaste is is a little odd. But I guess it wouldn't be Magic Hat without something a bit off. I jest though...#9 may be crap but this one's not half-bad.

poured into a clean pint glass

A: Dark golden brown, plenty of carbonation, one finger width foam.

S: Light smell of piney hops with a hint of spice

T: Again slight pine from hops but a definite spice from the rye.

M: Not thin but not heavy. Still very smooth and a crisp finish

O: I have had a couple of these rye/IPA and I got to tell you I really like them and this one is no different. Crisp enough for a hot summer day but spicy enough for a chilly fall day at a football game.
