Seance from Magic Hat pours a surprisingly muddy brown color with a decent khaki colored head. (for some reason I did not think this was a dark Saison) The liquid is actually revealed to be almost as light as a raw umber hue when held up to light. There is some evidence of carbonation, too. The aroma is pleasant and inviting. I nice bouquet of lavender and spice, cherries, eucalyptus, lemon, and toasty bread scents fill my nostrils. The flavor is quite similar to the aroma, revealing only a little more. The toastiness in the aroma comes off as smoky, and the cherry sweetness dominates a little more. I do happen to like the way those two bigger aspects blend though. There's a yeasty farmhouse flavor present enough as well. The herbal finish comes off a little sharp with a tingling sensation. It's got a pretty light mouthfeel to it. Overall though, this is very unusual but I would say worth trying. It is one of the beers in Magic Hat's roster that has a bit more substance.

I am now committed to reducing, if not eradicating, my backlog of bottles. This one was part of a local, in-person trade with tone77.
From the bottle: "The ancient ritual of brewing a distinctly rich and flavorful beer is a performance to behold. Our mysterious melange of time-honored ingredients harmonize with chaotic chemistry, humble patience and blind faith to create this unique beer to share in the rousing company of kindred spirits. Cheers!"; "A liquid dance through life's trance"; "a performance in every bottle".
It does not happen often that I am surprised by a beer, but the dark color of this one as it poured into the glass really caught me off-guard! It made the pseudo-cascade very visible, which in turn created two dense, rocky fingers of deep-tan head with great retention. Color was a deep-brown with mahogany highlights (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a bittersweet chocolatiness with a slight mustiness. This is a saison?!? Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium. The taste was very odd (notion) - slightly chocolaty, slightly peppery, kind of musty, a little smoky. Wow! Finish was dry, but just not what I think of when I think of a Saison.
