12oz bottle with no date

Didn't pour this one out, so I can't comment on the looks of it. Smell was light and wheaty and not without hops. I would describe the taste as a muted little sumpthin sumpthin. I have no idea if it's a wheat IPA, but it tastes like one.

Not bad, but I wouldn't order it again.

DATE TASTED: November 17, 2013... GLASSWARE: Kisatsky Tavern pint... OCCASION: one sink leak fixed--tomorrow, the toilet unclogs!... APPEARANCE: golden yellow body--quite light (and bright!) for an IPA--and a thick milky white head; equally thick, cirrus wisps of lacing... AROMA: quite a fragrant floral bouquet with banana, clove and citrus zest--attractive and yet appropriate (!) for an IPA... PALATE: a bit acidic late, but overall a drinkable, persuasively medium-bodied ale that sits well in the mouth...TASTE: immediate punch of mango and peach gives way to pinecone; a comfortable, fruity, fittingly rewarding profile...OVERALL: The fall beers in this mix pack fall short, but the IPA wins out as distinguishing and desirable--this will b e my Magic Hat go-to in the future...

12oz bottle into snifter. The brew appears a pale golden color with chunks of yeasty particulate all through the body. A white finger fades leaving patchy lace on the glass.

The smell is minty and herbal with bready malt. Some hints of citrus zest and overall it is quite muted. A swirl releases some cheesy sulfur notes to the surface that arnt particularly good.

The flavor has some herbal to zesty hop spice/bitterness. It is lightly pithy to pulpy. Like the aroma, some cheese and sulfur becomes noticeable mid-palate before finishing with some toasty bready grain character and a hint of cardboard.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Not terrible but not good either. I appreciate my brother gifting me with a bottle of this to try but I will pass on having it again.

An under-rated Hop bomb. The best I have tasted out from under the Magic Hat.

A: Pours a very hazed, very light apricot with a mid sized white head that paints a alot of lace. Well done.

Smell: Hops! Fruity, grassy, perfume-y, and slightly doughy.

Taste: Follows the smell. An original hop bomb. Biscuit and caramel (cinnamon roll) up front with a piney / grassy hop follow on... then the finish is a bit watery but enough bitterness and hop tingle to satisfy. Very hippy, flowery.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation, missing a bit of body in the finish.

Drinkability: A must try for Magic Hat. You wonder at all these seasonals, "IPAs on tour", as just a gimmick too far, but every now and then they almost get it right. This is an interesting refresher, hop bomb.

Pours a slightly hazy amber with a creamy tan head. Smell is that of candied apricots. Taste is a hint of ginger up front, then some sweetbread, finishing with some earthy hops. Smooth mouthfeel. Overall a pretty good IPA. A more balanced IPA than many.

A - Golden brown color, slightly opaque. Almost foggy. Small head that not last long.

S - Smells delicious. Katie is getting a hint of honey, and I agree. I can definitely smell the hops, and my mouth is watering. Compromised the score here to be a 4; I would've given it slightly higher.

T - Slightly sweet, can definitely get the hops in the aftertaste. Katie not a huge fan, but... she doesn't like IPAs. I love IPAs, and this one has a great aftertaste without... the initial sharpness? Not sure how to explain it, but I really liked the taste.

M - Katie felt it was overcarbonated, just like the previous MH we had. I somewhat agree, so we are going with a 3.25. She did say it was smooth.

O - Overall a great beer. Katie can appreciate it even though she doesn't like IPAs.

appearance; color is seems yellow, but is essentially a light straw color, pours with a finger of head that quickly settles to thin lacing, appears pretty carbonated.

smell; not much there, light citrus and a touch of sweetness.

taste; taste is bitter, with obvious hop presence, but the bitterness is unusually light on the tongue, causing the beer to go down smoothly and really adding a positive aspect to the beer. a hint of malts and some citrus notes. a little earthiness too.

mouthfeel; thin, a little watery, dry finish. weak carbonation.

overall; while the lightness of the beer while still upholding standard, expected IPA qualities gives this ale a bit of an edge in terms of standing out and pleasing on a couple of levels, this beer falls short of it's potential, by lacking much needed complexity and oomph this beer fails to impress.

Yellow to tan and pretty clear, head and lace ok but not fantastic.

Aroma and taste are nice and hoppy, citrus notes, a little floral and a nice but subtle malt backbone.

Drinkability is high, it's real easy to down and almost refreshing at the same time. Bitterness is prevalent, yet clean. Body is medium. Overall it's a tasty IPA and I've enjoyed my sixer very much.

A - Pours a straw yellow, 1 finger of thin fizzy white head, little lacing.
S - Smell is of tart citrus, sweet candy malt, some flour.
T - Taste is very tart and dry, some mild bitterness, a little sweet mid mouth in part of the malt.
M - Dry and soapy.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My final beer from the Magic Hat Night Of The Living Dead variety pack, and I believe my first beer from Magic Hat's IPA on tour series. Expectations are relatively low based on the brewery. Bottlecap says "Ale is the grail". I have to agree.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a light lemony orange colored body with one finger of bubbly soapy white head that recedes quickly. Doesn't look like much, but about average for the style, I suppose.

S - The smell is putting me off pretty badly. I get the slightest earthy vegetal hop presence, and some corn & grains, but mostly a strong sour vinegar aroma and nail polish remover alcohol fumes. Some hints toward Belgian yeast, banana, and clove. For an IPA, this smells pretty bad.

T - Taste isn't nearly as bad as the aroma suggests, but it still doesn't get much better, and this definitely doesn't taste like 70 IBUs. Leafy earthy hops, some grain, bready malt, hint of alcohol, and some metallic mineral presence.

M - Feel ends sticky and bitter with some hop resins clinging to the palate.

Overall, a generic simple boring IPA at best. Hop varieties are indiscernible, and there isn't much hop flavor to be had in the first place. Hops and malts are both present, but it creates a neutral attempt. Moderately high alcohol at 6.70% abv, I'm not quite sure what they were going for with this one either. It wasn't a horrible beer, but not particularly enjoyable.

12 ounce bottle poured into a 22 oz. TGIF/Applebees/Ruby Tuessday glass.

A big, fat head that tapers down the sides leaving a thick lacing. Golden, slightly hazy color. This looks nice, real nice. Coming back to here afterwards, the lacing lasted the whole drink and continued forming until the bottom was reached. Just upped Appearance from 4 to 4.25.
S--Hoppy up front with some citrus trying to hide in the background. A little piney. There's not an actual sour aroma, but something about it is making me anticipate some sourness in the taste.
T--Not this week's standard Hop bomb. There's actually a bit of maltiness there to balance the hops. Quite uncommon this week. I prefer IPA's this way. There's citrus (lemon, maybe grapefruit??) up front. The anticipated sourness is not there in the taste. There's some hard to identify fruit here as well. Very good, but not what an IPA tastes like currently.
M--There's actually some creaminess here, again, uncommon for today's IPA's. There's a little bit of dryness at the finish, but nothing out of hand
O--Good, damn good. Not what today's IPA's are, but damn good nonetheless. I'd highly recommend it for someone just starting out down the road to today's hop bombs. It will give a good picture of what an IPA can be, besides a hop monster.

A: The beer is hazy light pale yellow in color and has a low to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that gradually died down, consistently leaving a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose—oranges seem to stand out in particular—along with some hints of pine resin.
T: The taste is dominated by the hops and has a moderate amount of bitterness, although the flavors are a little more complex with some citrus, notes of floral and spicy, and hints of pine resin hops. No malts are detectable.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The hop bitterness leaves some dryness in the finish.
O: This beer is quite bitter but still very drinkable because it doesn't feel too heavy on the palate.

Bought a single at world market $1.39

Poured into a Kona shaker pint glass.
Appearance resembled a wheat beer. Hazy yellow with a fizzy looking white head. The head reduced to a ring fairly quick and left a small amount of lacing. Did not get a lot with the nose.
First taste noticed a big floral presents with some pine and lemon. After taste is bitter and dry.
This is one of the better beers I have had from Magic Hat. Solid offering, a notch below outstanding.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy yellow-orange color with two fingers of a creamy, slightly off-white head The head stays at about a finger the whole way through. Some really nice looking lacing.

Smell: Fresh hops. Pretty sweet on the nose, with a lot of fruity notes on top of grassy-like hops. Maybe some cherries or something?

Taste/feel: Not as bitter as the description suggests -- better to listen to the IBUs, which are at 70. This is a fairly bitter IPA, but it's not something you wouldn't expect. The beer flips between bitter and sweet back and forth through each sip, and ends with a slightly bitter, semi-dry finish. The flavors I pull out are a solid combination of mixed fruits, fresh grass, and floral notes. The beer is medium bodied with a pretty low carbonation... almost like this was had on draft. I'd prefer a bit more carbonation though.

The consensus here is pretty accurate -- it's a good beer. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, it just lacks a certain "pop" in the flavor to get it a "Wow" factor. A very enjoyable beer, and one of my favorites from Magic Hat.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Slightly sun-bleached copper, a foamy cream colored head sits on top for a good time. Random splotches of lacing.

Aroma: Sour citrusy hops, tanginess.

Taste: Pine and a sour, tangy hop note linger throughout. Unlike most IPA's I've had but it reminds me of a Tasmanian IPA I've had. A spicy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium and maybe even light for the amount of ABV.

Overall: Just weird enough for me to really like, it's definitely different.

Magic Hat Hi.PA is an interesting beer because the smell is far better than the taste, which really does not help this beer. A light gold with about a finger of white bubbly head, Hi.PA is far lighter than most American IPAs. This remarkably was one of the better smelling IPAs I've had with notes of citrus, pine, and some floral hops. Unfortunately, the variety of the smell is basically ruined by the overly bitter taste. The pine hops are the only ones that really come through and make this a pretty bitter IPA that really isn't all that tasty. Whatever malt sweetness they allege you can find in this beer simply did not show up for me when I was drinking it. It's not a terrible beer, but I'm definitely not rushing back to have this again.

Poured into a pint glass from a bottle. Poured a nice hazy orange. Had about an inch of head on top and laced nicely. Smell was a nice mixture of hops and citrus. The taste yielded about the same as the smell. Nice pine and citrus taste. Not an overpowering hop taste, but just the right amount. Tasted perfect on a hot day.

Pours an orange straw color, slightly cloudy. It has a big frothy white head which leaves some nice lace.

Smells of citrus, lemon and grapefruit, and herbs.

Tastes is largely bitter lemon and grapefruit with a bitter herb taste moving in and out. There are some sweet orange and a faint malt ghost that appear at times. This is a decent IPA, but in a field of standouts this will get left behind.

Appearance 3.5: Light honey-colored. Sightly cloudy, which is never a bad thing. Smallish head that dissipated quickly.

Smell 3.5: Pleasant bouquet. Bright grains with nice hop alkalinity. Slight smell of fruit of some type.

Taste 3.5: Front is dry, with very little hop alkalinity. Middle is dry also, with slight grain flavor and a strange (although not unpleasant) fruity taste. Also, a subdued hop alkalinity is present here, with a restrained hop profile; possibly some noble hop variety. Finish is where the hops really flood in, but this is a trickle and not a raging river. This level is also dry and the hops seem to focus on the middle of the palate. Aftertaste is surprising: another big hit of hop alkalinity with a continued focus on the middle of the palate. The hop taste is all alkalinity with none of the nicer hop flavor profiles such as pine, citrus or chlorophyll.

Mouthfeel 3.25: Bubbly, but thin in the mouth. Would have done better with more of a focus on filling out the taste profile.

Overall 3.5: Good IPA, but certainly nothing outstanding. The focus here seems to be on one hop and it would have been nice for the brewers to let the imbiber know what hop was chosen. Then again, I could be wrong, this could be yet another melange of different hops. Regardless, this is a beer that would go well with food, this because of its dryness all along the taste profile. Certainly not a bad beer, but not one I would necessarily choose to buy again.

HiPA is a pale shade of yellow, situated somewhere between straw and honey. Small particles of sediment are observed in the hazy liquid, and a cottony head rests on top after a power pour. This later goes down to about 3/4 of an inch, but still, ample lacing clings to the glass. The scent is not terribly inviting... one can barely detect the grapefruit-like hop aroma underneath an sharp, astringent and medicinal layer, that I perceive as off. This could be due to the fact that this bottle is quite past its prime, being a fall release. After a sip however, I was surprised that it was actually pretty tasty. It's heavy on the pine variety of hop flavor, but it's also got a flowery splash thrown in. Something else reminds me of pollen. The brew feels full-bodied as it coats the mouth and is somewhat warming on the way down. There is a very distinct malt presence that again, could be due to the bottle's age. For this review I find the balance between malt and hops favorable though. Take this review for what it's worth - expect what I have found to apply to presently finding a single bottle of this on the shelf.

Magic Hat Hi.P.A.

A blindfolded taster would instantly and correctly guess this to be an IPA. It is always well done and styled flawlessly when the flavor profile smacks the catcher's mitt in the pitch zone. This brew is banging on the door of an American Double IPA.

A: Hazy pale gold

S: Citrus and evergreen reaching out to tweak your nose with a sharp, playful hop pinch

T: Sharply tart, hop bouquet lingering

M: On the light side

O: A perfectly, nice IPA - I'd have been proud to brew it myself.

This beer reminds me of 'Heady Topper'. For those living in the Waterbury, VT area know what the hell I am talking about. This is the closest thing to the Alchemist's Head Topper.
