Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a plastic cup, the beer is a dark, caramel-copper coloring with a filmy, clinger, off-white head. Nose of smooth, roast caramel and peppery hops. Balanced aromas. Flavors are resiny hops forward, bitter, with toffee and caramel sweet and richness following. Peppery build in the end of the palate. Smooth, mid-bodied, with a cloaking lace left behind. Aftertaste is richly sweet, with resiny bitter overtones. Smooth, dry finish. Solid English style IPA.

Poured into a small glass from a growler. Bought while on vacation at The Cape. Should've brought another one home.

A - Pours darker than most IPA's. A brownish amber with just a bit of a haze. A small amount of carbonation showing. A disappointingly small head, even after a somewhat aggressive pour.

S - Not a whole lot of hops up front. I noticed about an even amount of malt and hops, but lot's of fruit. A touch of grapefruit, some lime, and perhaps some cherry. Very interesting, but very good aroma.

T - As with the aroma, it's a little different from most IPA's. Nice to have some variety. Not a ton of hops up front, but they're there, and are tasty. A bit of malt is present as well, as well as all of the aforementioned fruits were noticeable, especially the cherry. Again, a unique tasting IPA, but a very good one.

F - Arguable the most refreshing IPA I've ever had. I drank this while on the beach, and it was almost perfect. A good amount of carbonation, and is easy on the throat and stomach while still packing plenty of flavor.

O - A unique IPA. More malty and less hoppy than most. Nice to have some variation, as I think a lot of IPA's are quite similar. It's a very tasty, yet extremely refreshing beer. I'm kicking myself for not picking up another growler on my way out of town. I've sampled all three of Cape Cod Beer's year-round offerings, this IPA, Beach Blonde Ale, and Red Ale. This is by far the best. If you're on The Cape, find some of this stuff.

A - Arrived at the table with very little head, although what was there retained fairly well. The beer is much darker than most IPAs I've had, something of a brownish amber. Bits of ruby appear in the outdoor seating environment. Slow bubbles are visible in the beer, which aid in the head retention. Lacing is actually less than I expected, but still present.

S - I'm smelling sweetness here - mostly caramel. Some other toffee and bready scents.

T - Follows the nose. It is balanced very heavily onto the sweet malty side, and the only thing that really hints that this is an IPA is the bitterness that kicks in on the finish. But its not complimenting. Too sweet on the front end. Too bitter on the back.

M - Medium-bodied. Nice, but not special.

O - Would like to give higher ratings, but I wouldn't drink this one again. The sweetness and bitterness clash significantly and don't serve to complement each other at all.

Consumed 5/23/13

Note: 500mL swing-top Grolsch-style bottle

Appearance: Pours clear, with a light chill haze - medium amber with a lot of reddish highlights - aggressively carbonated (bottle opened with a ridiculous pop), big, creamy, off-white cap - leaves a nice wall of lacing

Smell: Rich caramel malts and a blast of herbal, grassy, piney hops - the malt presence is big, but I wouldn't call this balanced - grassy, herbal, spicy hops - a lot of earthiness, too - chewy, lightly toasty, caramel malts and grains - reminds me of a bag of specialty grains about to be thrown into a kettle of homebrew

Taste: Follows the aroma, with some raw hops and raw grains - very bitter, with a load of herbal, grassy, spicy, earthy, piney hops - I'm not sure what hops they used here, but they are unusual - somewhat balanced by the pale, caramel, and amber malts - grainy, in a good way, and finishes dry - some light, buttery notes, and an undertone of salt

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, nice finish, quaffable despite the spicy bitterness

Overall: Worth a try, maybe on the beach

The spicy hoppiness and earthy malts kind of remind me of salty ocean air. I'm not sure why. Regardless, while I'm not a huge fan of the hop profile, I definitely find it interesting. I look forward to trying the other Cape Cod beers.
