This was one of my most surprising restaurant visits in the last few months - although I had heared of it before. Basically I came for the food - which was excellent Vietnamese cuisine at a very good price - and took the vast beer selection as an add-on. But once we saw the beer list (which we had to ask for) we were inspired to do beer and food pairings. Our lunch experience was so good that we decided to return for dinner, when the place was a bit crowded. Service was as good as at lunchtime. Beer and food just fantastic (a term I rarely use).

Unbelievable selection of top beers on tap from around the country, as well a big bottle selection. Huge, busy restaurant with large bar area too. The food is fantastic and the service is as good as it gets. Try the Pho Thai and the fresh spring rolls.

Typical looking restaurant from the outside and upon entering. Sat at the bar and the draft board blew me away! Lots of wild ales, several goses, and plenty of IPAs and stouts. Bartender Phillip was prompt and cool and An, the owner, was nice enough to chat with us and show us the brewery next door, The Answer brewpub. Overall, this place is a must stop if you're ever in Richmond.

I'm not sure what the origin of the Mekong location is, but it looks like it might have been a brewpub in a former incarnation; at the very least, the bar would indicate that. Otherwise it looks like an Asian restaurant, or at the very least, a strip-mall restaurant. I found the decor and atmosphere pleasant but not special.

The service is exceptional considering that we're not talking about fine dining. The staff seems eager to please, and happy in their work.

The draft list is extensive and well-balanced, although they do lean towards what's popular at the moment (currently IPAs). They care about the beer and use specialized glassware for each style.

The food is varied as well, really quite good, and surprisingly affordable. Not unlike another reviewer on BA, I'd have to rank their Phở as possibly the best I've ever had, and if not, at least second best. ($6.95 for a large bowl of Phở Do Bien - you'd better try it!). I'd go just for the food, but the fact that they have great beer makes it an even stronger destination.

One thing I should point out is that you don't need to eat. You can just stop in at the bar and just hang. There's usually a crowd, and they don't seem to care that they're surrounded by the dining room of an Asian restaurant. In that way it's quite unique, and even a bit surreal.

Mekong is certainly worth a visit whether you like Asian food or not. And I should also point out, it's not that far from Strangeways Brewing either.

Hands down my favorite bar to visit. An is one of the friendliest and generous people you will ever meet in your life. He and his slew of beer nerd followers will give you a memorable experience every time!

This place is awesome! I visited Richmond for work and met Precog640 for an in-person trade and a beer. Tons of great beers: IPAs, sours, BA stouts, and everything in between. I chatted it up with the staff and they were great, definitely knew their stuff. I assume if you needed a recommendation, they could take care of you. This is THE spot in Richmond and probably the region.

Good, affordable food (Hot and Sour Soup was amazing), and impressive beer. Unassuming location, so I'm pretty much wild about this place--I'm turned off by places and service that's full of themselves. None of that here, just the real deal. Tons of 5's on here, which might be overdoing it a bit, but it's good.

Atmosphere: Located in a odd little strip mall, its not quite the spot I'd expect to see one of the highest rated multi-taps on the site. Inside there is a bar area and a sprawled out seating area. Decorations are all over and beer related.

Selection and Quality: For all the good things I have heard of people having there, I must have hit on an off night. A large selection of taps but nothing I saw was worth going out of my way for. Good local selection and enough taps to cover all the styles.

Food: large menu. great spring rolls. The entrees weren't overly special in my opinion, but they were definitely unique to a beer bar.

Overall: I was disappointed with the taplist when I was there, but thats definitely not to say I won't be going back. Maybe next time Ill have to plan on going for a tap event or something were they have a better selection

I would probably fly to Vietnam to this food with this beer selection, but I only have to drive to Richmond. Score! We shared spicy squid with lemongrass and beef curry while drinking Cigar City sours. Enough said.

This is one of my favorite places to go for beer and a spring roll.
This is the first place I take out of town guests who really like beer.
The owner and the wait-staff are very knowledgeable of all kinds of beer. He (An) is also very generous and very personable. Hospitality is definitely in full abundance here. I highly recommend sitting at the bar if its just you and 1 or2 buds. This is truly a special and unique experience. The beer list is the best in Richmond. The food is average to good, but I highly recommend the crispy spring rolls and the wings. If you want a great beer outing Mekong is always tops. I have never seen another venue like this one. The experience is incredible. Soon there will be brewing just a couple of doors down. Don't miss the Kong. Its worth whatever it takes.

Of all the places that I have rated, how did I miss this one? As everyone else has said, it is hard to spot if you are not paying attention. Despite its small location, the taps are vast! An, the owner, has an eclectic taste for beer, so the draft list offers an array of craft beers from around the world, as well as local. I don't think that I've ever been disappointed with what he has. His cuisine is quite interesting! I only order what I know, but I'm sure there are some dishes on there awesome.

The staff is funny, and if you don't have thick skin with some, you may feel like they are picking on you, but its all in good fun! I have come to know one waiter in there that is just incredible and hilarious! If you are ever in the are, this is a must visit spot. I'm looking forward to An's newst baby, "The Answer", which should be open soon.

You can easily miss Mekong if you aren't looking carefully. It is located in an unassuming strip-mall as you head West from downtown Richmond, and that may add to the mystique surrounding this mainstay of craft beer in Virginia.

Unlike some craft beer bars which seek to cater to a particular demographic, Mekong functions like a traditional Vietnamese restaurant that incidentally has an amazing beer bar. Thus, you will encounter a wide range of folk while dining or drinking.

As with any popular restaurant, you will want to arrive earlier in the evening to avoid the crowd. Parking is an issue in the front of the building, though there is ample space around back. I have never had to wait for a table in the restaurant, but it does get packed on the weekends.

While this is not a food review, I will say that the menu offers a wide variety of traditional options, and I have never been disappointed with the curry or crab dishes. There are better Vietnamese restaurants, but none with a better beer selection.

There is something for every kind of beer taste. You will always find sour and wild beers on the menu. Mekong supports the Virginia craft scene by carrying a number of exceptional breweries from around the state, especially those found in Richmond. There is a nice selection of Belgians, as they hold a historical place in the evolution of beer at Mekong. If you can't decide what to get from the massive menu, the guys behind the bar are happy to help.

The staff alone are worth a trip. Extensive beer knowledge, impressive memory, and a charming confidence can always be expected. Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning An Bui, the "Chief Beer Officer" at Mekong. He's taken an unknown Vietnamese restaurant to one of the best craft beer bars in America, as voted by the readers of Craftbeer.com. If you get the chance, chat with him about beer. He really likes the stuff.

For the craft beer enthusiast, Mekong is more than just a restaurant or bar; it is an exercise in passion, which is why it is beloved by so many.

We would've missed this spot on a recent vacation to the area - had it not been for Beer Advocate. After seeing the buzz, we had to check it out - and I'm very happy we did. The exterior is unassuming and then some, you'd never know the interior of this strip center joint's got an amazing selection of beers. I looked over the menu for a good thirty minutes prior to ordering a full pour. The owner, An, is super cool - and our bartender was as well. They don't mind pouring small samples of a couple brews - so I did get a chance to try a few things other than the two full beers I had. Apparently they do a lot of big beer dinners, too. Also - the food is fantastic. We ate the lunch special and it was awesome - those around us said that everything on the menu was good. This is a world class beer bar - with great food. What's not to love?

I live less than a mile from Mekong in the West End suburb right behind it. I have to say, that Mekong being so close is probably one if the best things about my house haha. Seriously, the environment is awesome, the beer list is constantly rotating yet An always seems to have at least one of my favorite IPAs (Double Jack, Sculpin, Dirtwolf) or one of my favorite stouts. An, the owner is one of the most welcoming people I have met, and Tommy at the bar is the man and provides excellent service. The crowd is always a group of eclectic people and it is just a great place to be.

My only complaint would be the turtle slow service you get if you don't sit at the bar, but that's only a problem if you're in a rush. Ultimately, if you're in the West End, go to Mekong and get a drink.

Being from Northern VA, I only get down to Richmond occasionally; and had missed visiting Mekong Restaurant until now. The reason is it is located on a commercial strip in the far outskirts while I am visiting the downtown area. In other words, at has to be a destination on its own, and it is not really worth the side trip.

It is very busy on this Friday evening, but large so there was no problem sitting at the bar. Nothing to say about the restaurant itself, above average but not great.

The beer selection is very good, but they do not own any pint glasses. Everything is in servings of 12 oz or less, so the $5-7 prices are high for the city which has many alternatives. There are many local Virginia beers, which makes the high prices more questionable considering what I can get at home in a pricier suburb of DC.

I only had a bowl of egg noodles with seafood, very basic and also good but not great. Perhaps I am spoiled by the many fine Vietnamese restaurants within a few miles of my home. In Richmond this may be exceptional.

The service was very hurried, almost rude. They assumed I did not know anything about either craft beer or Vietnamese food, which I do on both counts.

I really can't put into words how great this place is. the beer offerings are the best around period and the food is unbelievable. I swear they put something in that Pho that makes you crave it at least once a week. A word to the wise though, this place is on "island time" which makes it even better so don't expect to dash in & dash out because they won't let you (and why the heck would you?) We live an hour away and go there any chance we can get. Beer is the answer! This one's for you Tien-your the best!

The beer kilamanjaro of Richmond, soon to be expanded by it's beer sensi, An Mekong. If you have any questions about the beer, ask for An, as entertaining as he is knowledgeable, he'll tell you all he knows, and then some. And oh by the way, the food is pretty darn good as well! Try the appetizer sampler, the Pho and the Grilled Specialties. And make sure you pair it with something daring from among their 50 or so taps.

Mekong seems like an average Asian restaurant on first impression. However, when you walk back to the bar you will see why it's rate so highly. The selection of craft beers is outstanding. I was there on the first night of firestone walker tap takeover. what an amazing experience. The atmosphere was a social as you can believe. I was in town on business and the regulars made me feel like I was just there yesterday. The food was amazing. The staff was very knowledgeable about the beer selections. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend and even make it a point to go again if even driving through the area.

Total hole in the wall but a hidden gem in Richmond. Located near Libbie and West Broad Street. Don't worry if you don't speak the language...the menu is in English also. Fantastic food variety but amazing beer selection. One of the best I've ever seen. Tons of beer on tap. Many of the local breweries and quite a few hard to find smaller batch breweries. Something for every palate. I love spicy food with a nice stout. Great for lunch or dinner. Many release parties as well. They are building their own brewery next door called "Beer is the Answer". 30 taps and everything on tap is outstanding.

I was fortunate to finally make it to Mekong when my Roanoke beer sons and I went up to Richmond for the Hardywood Park GBS release on 11/16/13.
I had been forewarned that their tap list was impressive and I was not disappointed. I'm not sure how many taps they have but in RedNeck terms, it was a shit load. We all settled in to trying various Hardywood brews and they were all on point. You could tell they take pride in serving great brews properly (no tap line funk, great glassware, ect).
The service was outstanding without being overbearing, when you needed food/brews they were there Johnny on the spot.
Everyone enjoyed the food with me ordering an appetizer of pork dumplings. I love spicy foods and the dipping sauce (I asked for spicy) was deliciously HOT. Spot on in my book.
My only tick on the place is that it's 2 hours north of me and I could not convince them to pull up stakes and relocate to Greensboro, N.C. (sigh).
I had a blast there and wish we coulda stayed longer but we had to mosey over to Hardywood for the GingerBread Stout release. Thanks to my Roanoke sons (Kenny, CJ, and Chris) for turning me on to this fantastic place. Perhaps my old ass will make it back up that way onced again.

At Mekong, Beer is the Answer!( Review from my 11/16/13 visit.)

This place is a Vietnamese Restaurant with an awesome beer selection. They always have a large selection of Belgium and Belgium style beers on-top. They even have some sours and beers that I rarely see at other beer bars.

Every time I visit Richmond, VA, I have to stop here. The wait staff is friendly and the bartenders are very helpful at recommending beers.

The food pairs well with Belgium beer. They have a really good pho and make your own spring rolls.

The beer prices are very reasonable for what you get.

If you are ever in central virginia, MEKONG is a must.

It's hard to find a place with a wide variety of beers in the Richmond, VA area that are truly a wide variety and are not just pandering to the mega-produced and/or faux craft drinkers. An & crew has taken a Vietnamese restaurant with great food and atmosphere and transformed it to a beer Mecca.

Recently, he's re-configured the bar to now have 50+ taps, plus many different bottles. His 4 white-boards of draft beer listings contain beer, brewery, price, ABV, and sometimes a note about flavor... while containing many beers listed on each board. They're usually updated as soon as a keg has kicked.

The selection runs the gamut from your IPA's to your Red ales, Lagers to Sours - he keeps a few beers around, but rotates many of the taps. I've never seen any mega-produced anything served there, though the running joke is he'll find a bottle of Zima if anyone wants. Not only are the beers craft, but most score high points in ratings as well.

Depending on who you know and how busy they are, you can usually find An, Qui, or one of the other crew members discussing beer... and possibly pouring you ridiculous stuff you won't find on a menu. If it's your birthday, you even get the 64 oz birthday snifter filled with your choice (or theirs... depending on what they want to do). Otherwise, you'll get beer served in it's proper glassware; few shaker pints.

The food is excellent as well. Though most bar/restaurants in this area pair with good ol' American classics, you can't go wrong with crispy spring rolls, clay pot chicken, pho, and plenty of beer.

The only thing that might stick out is that if you go when it's busy, there's a good likelihood you may have to wait for a table, and wait for a bartender if seated at the bar... but usually they take care of you when they get to you.

This place is awesome! It's a Mecca for Virginia beers, Belgian-style ales and hard-to-finds. The staff is generous with the tasters, but you'll never be disappointed with a full pour. Everything is of the highest quality, perfect representations for each style, and the prices represent a tremendous value. Pair all of that with some top-notch Vietnamese food and you've got a guaranteed winning outing.

Easily one of the best beer bars in Virginia, if not the country. And I think the title of "bar" is maybe misleading as this really is a good Vietnamese restaurant that has a stellar tap selection.

I can't say enough about the tap list. Last night we had selections from Cigar City (yes -- six taps of CCB alone), as well as local breweries. Great selection of Belgian style ales including sours. Rare one-offs, too, such as the Kong Krush (DIPA made for Mekong). If you don't find something on tap that you like, maybe you should reconsider your beer geek status.

The food is excellent. Everything is appropriately spiced and the entrees are filling. There is something for everyone, too, including vegetarians. The carmelized tofu hot pot is not to be overlooked even by the more carnivorous type.

Service is more or less hit or miss; I remember it being a hit years ago when I went here a few times with grad school comrades. However, last night was a bit of a miss. I know for many of the servers language is a barrier and I am sympathetic to that. However, we would have liked another round last night but felt like we were being hurried out; the server brought the check right after he cleared our plates. There were plenty of tables open and no line at the door -- not sure what the rush was. But given all of the other pros of this place, I can live with this hiccup.

This is not only a great beer place but is unique in that the food served is not your standard pub fare -- a real gem of a place. If you are in RVA for any length of time, you are missing out if you do not make this one of your stops.

A must visit! An, the owner, now has fifty taps to please. Local brews from Hardywood, COTU, among others. The best list of Belguim's and Sours on tap. I am always amazed at the turnover of what is on tap as it constantly changes. The food is wonderful, big portions and great flavors. The special nights here are amazing. Barrel week was awesome! I only wish I could go everyday of the week. In fact I will be eating lunch there today and enjoying some beer I have never tasted!
