Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Duvel Tulip. Thanks to mrmarmot for muling this back from the NABA competition.
A: Supremely dark but not pitch black. Average pour aggressiveness leads to a big rocky fizzy head that fades within a minute or two. Not much lacing.
S: Porter-like smell with darker malts shining brightly and some hoppiness to the nose but not a ton. Not overly complicated but nicely blended. I would expect smoke here and there is a touch but not nearly as much as I've experienced with other rauchbiers.
T: Dark malts shine brightly again and then it's knocked out of the park with a sneaky smoke that does *not* overpower but makes a lovely quick appearance and then fades, knowing its role. Excellent flavor.
M: Sharp finish, medium body. Not as overly fizzy as I expected with the type of head that was produced.
O: A very nice smoked beer. Smoke flavor does not linger and does not overpower. It's an excellently blended brew and one that was full of surprises. I'm very glad I was able to taste this one. Most definitely worthy of the gold medal it received.
