Very clean, very cavernous, this restaurant is stark and sparkling and heavy on brasserie chic with a mix of early Modernism with Art Nouveau and Russian Constructivism. Not being over-exacting but a lot of the details were cliche examples of the styles listed. Minimalist in all aspects, the exposed ceiling is a nice touch but the heating ducts are enormous and hang heavy like B-2 bomber over your head. The booths are nice but are so damn tall but cramped that my legs were cramped beyond belief (I am only six feet tall). I felt like I should have been taking confession the space was so boxy. The seats were also crazy uncomfortable, like old pew style. So, if you can, get a seat at the nice bar or at the large square and round tables.
Service is good - too good in fact. Either he was hyped on coffee or too used to American-style service, but homeboy needed to slow down. A thousand requests and returns within the first 15 minutes is a bit much; but, soon enough he realized that my lady and I were there to savor a nice dinner, so he slowed down and gave us space and time.
Beer selection is gravely poor, with five house beers that don't change and a seasonal or two. The wit was bland, the Belgian pale was good, the Dubbel was lacking in malt, but the IPA was surprisingly heavy on hop flavor. All were served in shaker pint glasses. Are you kidding me? They put how much effort into the most minute details of artistic time periods and then serve Belgian beers in shaker pints? But they serve mixed drinks in beautiful tulips and snifters. I've never seen such stupidity.
Food was what you'd expect from the company that owns it (and Grizzly Peak and North Peak and....) - good burgers, decent fries, but Belgian gone corporate on the whole. Moules and pate are fine, the steaks are better than fine, but the details are lacking. The traditional mayo is nothing like what you'd get over the pond or at better Belgian joints, and the specialty mayos are fun twists but Indian and Mexican-ized mayo just don't cut it for me. I could name five places in Philadelphia alone that meet or surpass the food here, and wallup the beer selection. Prices are good especially for the healthy portions. And whats with the lack of coffee selection?
Nice place, would enjoy it if I lived nearby for the food, not the beer, but I'm never making the drive again.

Stopped by on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Big fan of Belgian ales,so this place was on my must-visit list for a while. Chicken and waffles were excellent, the kids plates were huge, pomme frittes were perfect with garlic mayo. Wife and I split the tripel and the dubbel, both were quite good. The only hiccup was that thw service was almost painfully slow, especially considering there were only a few other customers there at the time. Next time will just be the pomme frittes and beer at the bar.

Great Belgian inspired beers in a hip atmosphere. Pretty good food, great belgian frites with a variety of dipping sauces. In Royal Oak, so expect a wait during peak dining times. Nectar De Dieux is a great tripel. Award winning brewer.

Beers littered with off flavors. I am perplexed as to how they have won so many awards.

This was stop #2 of a pub crawl for our group of 4 this day. We has just finished lunch at another brewery so we just wanted to try the beers as the primary part of our experience here. It was just after lunchtime and the brewery was nearly empty. Consequently we sat at the bar and had good service and got to talk with the bartender.
The brewery is a cut above most brewpubs as far as the ambiance goes, and the layout is more like an upscale restaurant and bar in the decor. The beers are all Belgian-inspired so I was a little apprehensive because this 'style' is usually not a favorite. We ordered a flight of 7 beer samplers, and all were very tasty. I may be changing my opinion about whether Belgian-inspired beers are to my liking. Our group (and I) liked every one of them, and we decided that they deserve a grading of a B across the board.
I forgot to look at the food menu but I notice that it is on the brewery's website. It looks very extensive, and I'd love to come back here someday for a meal. I highly recommend this brewery for a visit.

Been to this place twice; once inside, and once in the outdoor seating area.
The indoor atmosphere quite nice: clean, somewhat dark and barlike, and huge. It is a bit noisy, however, but nothing excessive. The outdoor seating allows you to people watch on Main Street, but it's a bit cramped and the tables are tiny. Also, if you're looking specifically to sit outdoors, prepare to wait a bit, as seating is limited. I'd actually recommend sitting indoors if you're having food simply due to space limitations.
The quality is top-notch. The food and beer are excellent and look excellent too.
The service is good; it was quite busy when we went both times and the servers were quick and attentive.
The selection is huge when it comes to food. Lots of fatty Belgian cuisine, but sooo good. It took me a long time to decide what I wanted since the menu was so large and had a lot of attractive options. I've only had burgers so far but they were fantastic.
The beer selection is quite wide, too. They offer flights of 6, 7 or 8, so I got the flight of eight, which was all their general beer plus their two seasonals. I liked all but one.
While a bit pricy, I'd say the value is worth it overall. Had my boyfriend and I gotten pints rather than the biggest flight each, our bill would have been much cheaper. I'd say the food prices are about average for dinner in Royal Oak.

(Visited 08/2011): Bastone is located in the heart of Royal Oak at the corner of S. Main and 5th. Metered parking is available in the surrounding area.
The interior is pretty cozy with a small bar area on the right and high backed booths and tables in the restaurant area. They have a patio as well. Brick and tile motif. Above the bar hang signs featuring each of their standard beers.
Bastone serves 8 beers including a seasonal or two, and a sampler is available. They range from Blonde, Pils, and Wit to a Dubbel, Tripel and Saison Noir. All of the beers are above average. They also have a few bottles from Jolly Pumpkin and North Peak.
Service on a relatively slow weekday (I arrived right as they opened). The bartender was knowledgeable about their beers and of other recommendations for the area.
The food at Bastone has a Belgian tilt, and my pomme frites and sandwich were good.
Overall this is a pretty solid spot. Maybe not a fair comparison but I think Brugge is a lot better, however this is still a place worth visiting in the area.
