Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

"A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth" - Label
12oz bottle is poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. The beer pours a somewhat hazy golden yellow with an orange hue. A large head erupts after the initial pour and without much haste dissipates. After the head retracts, a moderate amount of lacing is left in its wake which dries and stays on the glass for the duration of my beers existence.

The nose is quite pleasant, consisting of an array of hop varietals. Piney, bitter notes blend with tropical fruits, citrus and musty earthy notes.

The taste seems a bit more one sided as far as the hops are concerned. The bitterness seems to override any fruit or citrus notes. The saving grace of this beer is the well rounded malt bill that helps keep the hops balanced. The hops seems to be a little muted in the taste leading me to think this isn't as fresh as I would like it to be.

It is well carbonated and medium bodied. The finish is quite bitter and very dry and leaves me wanting more which I suppose is a good thing. The freshness thing does urk me. I really wish breweries would date, at the very least, their IPA's...

Last of my beers courtesy of Newman

Brilliantly clear, on the gold/amber bolder, but fairly pale. Pours a nice tight head, creamy and with nice retention.

Rich hop aroma, more on the pine side. Has some malty notes in support to balance out the aroma. Sampling fairly cold, but feel like their might be a little alcohol just out of reach in the nose.

Wow, hops! Big, solventy but not overpowering hop flavor, a piney/earthy flavor with a hint of nuttiness. I know the malt is there, but it is buried under the hops. Hop bitterness in the finish is intense yet somehow smooth.

Borderline tongue scraper in terms of hop bitterness on the tongue, but not overly astringent. Some definite warming, not out of line for the style. Medium-full body and medium carbonation.

A really expertly crafted beer. How it could be so hoppy without much in the way of harshness was impressive to me. The nature of the hop flavor isn't my personal favorite, but they used the hops to maximum advantage.

12 oz. bottle picked up as a single in Port Huron; no apparent freshness info. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a murky brownish-amber colour, topped with one finger of soapy white froth that dissipates over the next few minutes. It eventually thins into a lumpy cap and collar, with some loose bands of lacing scattered around the glass. Very enticing aroma - citrusy grapefruit and mandarin orange are quite prominent, in addition to notes of mango and pine sap, underlain with a malty caramel sweetness.

A good, strong IPA. The backbone consists of toasted malts and toffee, providing just enough substance to keep the (far more aggressive) hop bill in check. Lots of pine and grapefruit pith notes comes through, with a candied orange flavour toward the finish, as the citrusy and boozy elements begin to blend. Bitter, resiny aftertaste that lingers. On the more viscous side of medium-bodied, with a somewhat oily, slick mouthfeel in spite of the moderately assertive carbonation. This is a full-flavoured, bitter IPA with a modest alcohol kick, which limits its drinkability.

Final Grade: 4.06, an A-. I enjoyed this bottle of Short's Humalupalicious IPA, certainly enough to consider picking it up again in the future. Working under the assumption that this is a fresh bottle (since it doesn't taste off or otherwise stale), this is an excellent, hoppy strong ale that all hopheads within Short's distribution range should consider well worth a look. Great stuff.
