Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Bottled: unk, thick yeast cake. A: golden copper with two fingers of light yellow foam falls slowly to a quilt of the same with spotty lace. Excellent clarity. (4) S: Yeast is the first thing I smell. Sharp chemical american ale yeast, then some malts followed through by a little bit of hop character. Poor rep for IPA. (1) T: Tastes like yeast - a blend of american and unibroue yeast. Then again a little hop character with some sweet malts. Poor. (1) M: Thick for the style with moderate carbonation. Semi dry finish. (3) O: Bad job. Looks good, but downhill from there. The yeast in the bottle tells me this is old, but I wouldn’t really know provided they don’t indicate date. (1.5)

12 oz bottle. No bottling dates.

Bright, golden body with a one-finger, off-white head. Settles to a patchy cover with some lacing on the glass.

Sweet aromas of brown sugar and honeysuckle, with some pine resin in the background. Some citrus as well.

Light lemon and spice up front. Cracker malts with lots of carbonation combine for a dry mouthfeel. Biting hop bitterness with lots of astringency. It completely dries the mouth out, leaving a lingering metallic and medicinal taste.

The finish is pretty nasty tasting. There is way too much astringent bitterness here, with no balance. Not a well made IPA.

Took a chance on this during Short's recent dump and run tour of MA beer stores.

Very faint tropical hops with a little rotten cantalope and mushroom aroma. Lack of strong hop aroma followed through to the flavor and was left with just a substantial grassy/pithy bitterness. Good malt girth that lended some balance though. After letting warm up I can detect some phenolic weirdness in the background. Not sure if age or an oncoming infection of some sort is causing this to be bland and lifeless. Who knows, this could have been good if it was in good shape, but only worthy of sucking down fast to pad my alcoholic intake at this point. A reminder of why I hardly ever buy commercial bottled IPA's anymore.

I was really excited to try this beer as I always am with Shorts. Or as I like to call them, the brewery that makes some really weird-ass-hit-or-miss-push-the-envelope brews.

This one was a total miss for me. Seriously, nothing redeeming in it at all. I'm hoping I just got an old bottle because reading the recent reviews, this isn't the same shit I'm drinking. Even the PB&J which was extremely tart and sour, I could find some good qualities in it.

Time really makes quite a difference in an IPA to me. It can take a great beer and just add syrupy fecal notes to it. Hopefully I'll get another *fresh* bottle of this and re-review from that.

Reviewed blind, thanks to abraxel...

A: Pours a translucent gold with yellow hues. There is a full two fingers of head that take forever to settle. Massive lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is pine, malt, and a lot of vegetal funk. It smells like an old IPA. I even get a touch of onion in here. It's a bit off-putting.

T: This beer is sweet to start but then it turns to onion and old vegetation. It tastes muddy and funky. Honestly, this is pretty unpleasent. It sweetens back up in the finish and nothing lingers for too long.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet and weird to start. It gets a bit nasty in the middle and finishes sweet again.

O: Not a fan of this at all. Either this is old, or it's just bad. There was way too much old vegetal taste for my liking.

A: pours out a hazy, straw yellow color with a white head that sits around for a while. there are strings of carbonation running up the glass.

S: smells of citrusy and piney hops. i gets hint of bread and light grain and some fruity esters maybe even some banana.

T: it has a clean hop taste. i get some citrus flavor, and piney hops. it finishes dry and bitter. i get a little soapy flavor (possibly from glass?)

M: it has a nice light mouthfeel.

D: the soapy flavor is throwing this off for me. i am hoping it is just the glass. ill have to retry this.

A: Poured a nice pale gold with a decent one finger fluffy white head.

S: Lots of pine and resin hop notes here. Nothing "fruity" here if that's what you are looking for but there is a very slight sweetness. Strong biscuit and slight caramel malt backbone.

T: Bitter astringent hops first and foremost. This is followed by a slight raw grain taste. I hate to say this, but there was some weird taste that I couldn't really put my finger on...I'm not sure if it was some weird interaction with the pizza I was eating but I got a funky somewhat fecal taste briefly. Then it finished very astringently, like crushed aspirin.

M: Creamy body with a nice medium carbonation. Finishes super dry though due to the strong astringent nature.

O: I can't really make out what is written on the label, I'm assuming its a date, but considering this just showed up in MA like two weeks back I'd hope its not that old. Either way, pretty decent nose on this one but I really didn't enjoy the taste or drying finish.

Review from notes from last night

A - Chill-haze laden amber-orange with a half finger white head. Retention is nice, head reduces to a small wisp but remains for a while. Mediocre lacing.

S - Sweet caramel and lemon, bitter citrus and floral hops. Something off about the hops, as if they've taken on a bit of a rotten characteristic.

T - Tastes sweet and bitter, but without much in the way of distinct flavors. Malty and bready, with a touch of caramel flavor and floral hop, but largely devoid of distinct flavors. Reminds me of Saranac IPA which I don't love. Hops seem to provide bitterness only, with very little flavor. Way too bitter and unbalanced.

M - Medium to light body, a little watery. Drying on the palate but wet on the tongue, a little odd. Not bad, but another letdown in an average-at-best beer.

O - Just not great. Looks and feels just OK. Aroma is average at best, and the taste is bland and far too bitter. Other brews with lots of hops balance the bitterness with flavors, to great effect. This beer is lacking. Glad I got to try it, thanks for the trade extra!

Review from Fall 2012

A: Amber in color, quite cloudy from accidentally pouring in the bottle sediment. Fairly creamy looking white head on top. Lacing is quite good.

S: Some pine and maybe some buiscuty malts in there. Not much else going on.

T: This is a beer taste experience quite unlike anything else ive had before. Not in a good way either. Upfront, i basically get no taste. Like the beer is using some sort of cloaking device to pass over my tongue and get down my throat without leaving any delicious hop goodness behind. All that is left for my dumbfounded taste buds is an aftertaste flavor decoy consisting of raw IBUs and some resin.

M: Not that great. Fairly thin and sort of bubbly

O: One of my biggest beer disappointments to date. From this bottle I cannot understand its high rating. I love hop bitterness, but there must be good flavors to accompany that. Perhaps the sediment through the whole beer out of whack, but I feel like there really wasn't enough of it to accomplish that. A let down overall.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is bready caramel malts and melon with some piney resiny hops.

The flavor is a little oxidized malt and a touch of fruit followed by a huge harsh tarry bitterness. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and watery.

Overall, a bitter IPA, but not that great. Didn't care for the oxidized notes, the watery texture or the harsh tarry unbalanced bitterness.

A mouthful of hops with a totally bitter aftertaste. Pours an orangey amber in the glass. Hugely fragrant with a variety of hops, from flowery to piney.

Serious hop overdose. It's hard to rate this, since it seems so extreme. Resins and something medicinal. This might actually be a good hop concentrate to spice up that case of macro brews. A little oily and sharp in the mouth. Acidic, really. Hot and all hops, all the time. I have to go back to the old "Drinkability" rating and call it "not." Strictly for the those seeking the lash of the Hop Mistress.

From the 12 oz bottle bought at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

Reviewing the Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA from Short's Brewing Company
Score: 73

01/09 vintage bottle served in a Surly Darkness snifter and enjoyed on 01/19/12. Thank you to minterro for hooking me up with this one

Appearance: Pours a translucent orange-yellow color with a half finger of foamy off-white head that settles into a bubble ring around the glass. Solid lacing for a headless IPA. 3.5/5

Smell: Sharp honey and a "quick" lemon scent (it's quickly there and gone) mixed with a "floral" aroma. A little cocoa nib and milky malt. The nose is not very bitter, but it is a little "earthy." 3.5/5

Taste: Not much flavor here. There is a malty hops and light citrus flavor upfront, but it quickly mellows into an acidic and bitter, otherwise flavorless, creamy mouthfeel. A little stainless steel sweetness towards the "finish." At least it's drinkable. 2.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium-minus carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitter finish. 4/5

Overall: The mouthfeel is solid, but the rest of the beer falls far below expectations. This is the second disappointing beer that I have had from Short's in the past 10 days. Hopefully the Uber Goober Oatmeal Stout that I have in the fridge drinks better. I am glad I tried it, however.

Recommendation: This is an OK, but skip-able IPA.

Pairings: Greek-style french fries.

Cost: $8.99 for a six pack.

$2.00 for a 12oz bottle @ Jack's. My first bottled Shorts. "Crafted in Mar 09" notched on the label.

Pours out to an almost clear light amber, honey/burnt orange, forming a modest light yellow head with average retention and sparse lacing. Medium carbonation. The aroma is quite nice, hoppy and toasted. There is skunky MJ and grapefruit and mango in here. The mouthfeel is smooth with a medium body, not quite as oily or dense as anticipated, with a dry finish. The taste opens with a huge green hop blast of pine, lemon and grapefruit, followed by a big toasty malt middle, with grain husk thrown in there, followed by a moderately strong grapefruit bitterness, oranges, and then a dry finish with grapefruit pith aftertaste.

This is a bit too bitter for my tastes. I prefer IPA's that are really drinkable...the type where you want to have another one despite how aggressive they can be. This is not one of them, as it's quite unbalanced. Still worth a try. Joe does a great job and his other beers are better, IMO.

A: pours a slightly hazy honey color with a finger of off-white head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: loads of pineapple on the nose with notes of caramel malt, grapefruit, and orange. Nice.

T: unfortunately the flavor does not match the aroma. Bitter grapefruit rind and pine dominate with a dry finish that is overly bitter.

M: medium body and carbonation, this beer could use a bit more carbonation.

O: unfortunately this beer does not taste as good as it smells. Still, it's an alright IPA.

This was a bit of a slow gusher, luckily I had about two seconds before it would have foamed up out of the bottle so I was able to get it into my glass. A careful pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a three-finger thick, lightly tanned, off white colored head. The beer is a nice, rich copper hue that shows a brilliantly clear, bright copper hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of cheesy, dank hops, ample grapefruit, tangelo and a backdrop of herbaceous pine. Some biscuit and caramelized malt notes are noticeable deep in the aroma if you dig for them. There is definitely something slightly off and cheesy (there is a certain mustiness too) about the aroma, though it is not too distracting.

Biting bitter hops are noticeable from the get go and linger on the palate long after each sip. Essential grapefruit zest oils, a touch of lychee and tangelo notes play a secondary role to the bitterness and pine like flavors found in this beer. There is a sort of an over-ripe cheesy quality, or perhaps almost butter like note to this beer that is mostly dominated by the hop character, but still manages to subtly influence the flavor profile, and not in the best way. This has a fizzy carbonic texture to it that is perhaps a touch too much, but this doesn't detract too much. The hop character in the finish is actually fairly harsh; it is almost too green and vegetal, and I am wondering if there is something else influencing this.

This beer is clearly quite well hopped, in fact it is so well hopped that it almost hides the subtle infection that is taking hold. Unfortunately the infection is influencing this beer with cheesy notes and a harshness to the finish. While the hop overload make this still drinkable, the infection in this Shorts beer doesn't work as well as it did in some of the others.

Pours bronze/amber and cloudy. Small white head that dissipates quickly. Lacing is minimal.

Smells of hops, slight smell of malt. Piney, not so much citrus, but a typical IPA smell.

Tastes slightly more bitter than most IPA's, but the balace is just about right. Certainly a "hopmonster". Slight taste of malts and sweet citrus flavor, but more bitter than anything. The flavor was bold and complex.

Finishes pretty dry, but it drinks easy.

This is a bitter IPA that is just above average imo.

received this from stickman1220 in a recent trade - thanks Chris!

poured from bottle into Dogfish goblet, no date on the bottle.

Huma poured with a nice, frothy white head which dissipated quickly and left heavy lacing on the glass. The brew was an amber color, and hazy with little opacity. The first thing that stood out about this beer was the smell- very intense smells of piny hops and burnt wood- as far as the hoppy smell it was less floral and more earthy. Also hints of honey come through. The beer's taste smacked of bitter hops with almost no sweetness. The hops dominated the taste so much that it was hard to really get much else from it - they continually lingered through the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is sticky and medium in body.

I'm into hoppy beers but this one was like a punch in the face - I didn't get much sweetness from it like some other reviewers did, and I would have liked a little more to balance the uber-bitterness. I can respect it for what it is, but not one I would seek out again.

Bottle into Sam Adams lager glass, courtesy of aqsprint. Thanks Jon!

Pours a either a very hazy pale copper, or a dark straw. Thin, soapy off-white head.

Nose is grapefruit rind, with a bit of bitter astringency already showing itself, very dry.

Taste is apparently based entirely around the bitterness. Up front comes a big, harsh, astringent grapefruit-rindy bitterness, briefly interrupted by a nice, biscuity, lightly caramelly malt note, and more citrus, and then immediately taken back over by more of the huge, biting bitterness. Finish is long and bitter. All bitterness, very little hop flavor proportionately.

Mouthfeel is intensely dry, bit over-crisp, medium body, maybe a bit sticky.

Generally, I love hoppy beers that are dry, but that focus largely on flavor and not on bitterness. This is the exact opposite. Dry yes, but with a massive bitterness that manifests itself almost from beginning to end, and the actual hop flavor is largely lost in the shuffle. At first I thought there was something wrong with the beer, but then reading the other reviews I realize, no, this is pretty much how it's supposed to be apparently. Meh.

Dense amber color with hints of cloudiness. Thick off-white persistent head. Distinct hoppy nose with strong pine forest notes with hints of citrus (grapefruit?) peel and pith. These notes are somewhat ephemeral and diminish if you let the glass sit. The beer has a medium body. On the palate the initial bitter notes were a bit on the feisty side. This also diminished, or was it acclimation and anosmia? I like bitter brews but found the initial bite rather strong and single layered. The hops camouflage any malty notes. The bitter notes linger and add to the moreishness of the beer. Additional sips do not quench this and the bitterness becomes a bit tiring. Evident Belgian lace. Very good palate cleanser and food accompaniment. I'd try it again.

Poured a beautifully promising amber color - some nice head at first, but that faded away quickly. Fresh, raw nose of some very American hops - big whiff of pine, bit of grapefruit, bit of citrus. Couldn't get any malt characteristics on the nose.

The taste matched the smell - the hops are HUGE on this one. The bottle says that it's a "complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth," but I think that the hops beat up the malt and hid it around back. It has a really wonderful hop profile - starts out sweet and fruity, transitions into grapefruit and pine and ends in a prolonged deep bitterness. Unfortunately, there's really no malt backbone to it, and I find the drinkability suffers because of that - the bitterness is wearing, and I'm just longing for a bit of malt to take off the edge. The mouthfeel is wonderful - thick and oily from the hops, and the carbonation is gently prickling.

All in all, there are so many other wonderful (and much more balanced) IPAs out there that really satisfy. If you really just love hops, here's a chance to taste them quite isolated. If you're looking for the whole package, look elsewhere.

Served in a 5 ounce sample mug

A- Pour a very hazy golden color with 1 finger of head and descent lacing.

S- Grapefruit and pine stick out first with a little bit of maltyness in the background.

T- Tastes pretty damn bitter, with grapefruit and pine leading the way, after taste is just straight bitter, i would call this a hop bomb.

M- Just the way and IPA should be, very true to the style.

D- Because of how bitter this beer is the drink-ability is very low, i could only have one of these before i am over with the bitterness, ruins your palate for anything u drink after it.

Overall this is not a bad ipa, it was just way too bitter for me, its seems that if the flavors arent blended together the best and the bitterness just takes over the whole beer. Don't think i would every buy this again but there's plenty other shorts brews i will be getting instead.

Poured form a 12oz into a Tulip

A:Nice Brownish Orange color, fairly clear with the slightest of haze. Poured into a nice 2 finger creamy off white head that recedes slowly leaving thick lacing

S: faint Creamed corn, weird, but that is exactly what I smell. Not much floral or citrus hop character.

T: Sweet malt upfront, strong lingering bitterness on the back end. Slightest off flavor, tastes like plant matter, like when I dry hopped a homebrewed IPA for too long.

M: Smooth lingering mouthfeel with crisp carbonation

O: Above average IPA, though not something I will seek out over other examples of the style. Lacking the floral and citrus hop nose that I really look for.

Thanks to afdempse for the bottle.

A: pours a slightly murky orange with a two inch very sticky head and nice lacing

S: hops, alcohol (in a single IPA - hmm...) and something strange (soap?) I'm struggling to identify. I keep smelling this brew looking for the citrus and floral aromas one would expect, but I can not detect them.

T: I'm missing the malt/hop balance here. This beer is confusing my palate, but not due to complexity, which is unfortunately lacking.

M: There's a very slight harsh bitterness with every sip.

D: Bitterness in the aftertaste. This 6.6% ABV feels like more. I'm ready to move on to a different beer.

Notes: It's really hard for me to get past the harsh bitterness, when this is only a single IPA. I know Short's is a great brewery, but this beer just isn't my bag, baby.

A - Deep Gold in color with a 1 finger bubbly white head on it that leaves some good lacing on the glass.

S - The hops are very fragrant in this beer. They range from piney to grassy to grapefruity.

T - The hops and the malt are well balanced. It has a slightly sweet toffee-like malty flavor as well as a toasty malt flavor. This is accompanied by a stong hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied.

O - Decent IPA, but honestly, it doesn't do much for me. Nothing about it screams "this is really good" or "this is really unique".

Tasted from 12oz bottle. Pours bright orange with a frothy white head. Nice hoppy pine resin aroma with some cereal malt. As the beer warms, some fruiteness becomes apparent. On the front of the palate, the flavor shows off the caramel and cereal malts, but on the middle and back of the palate, this beer belongs to the hops. The hops flavor begins fruity but ends with grapefruit bitterness as expected. The body fairly light with a somewhat thin texture. The carbonation is average, and the finish is super bitter and super long. This is a good IPA, but slightly out of balance.
