Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Acquired this from GBVDave and gratefulbeer head, so a big THANK YOU to both of them as I have two to enjoy this evening!
Poured in to my Portsmouth pint glass...

A: This beer pours a hazy honey color with a 1/2 inch of khaki color head. Head recedes quickly leaving wispy, spider web lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is of big, fresh, earthy and piney hops , minor hints of floral hops. Hops, hops, and hops in the nose.

T: Taste is is of big, fresh, piney and earthy hops up in the forefront of this beer. WOW. Middle has just a mild malt presence to it. Nice floral hops balances out the finish on this beer.

M: Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation, light oily texture on this beer.

D: Goes down extremely easily, nicely balanced, mild but nice kick. This is a fantastic IPA that focuses on the the piney hops. If this brewery distributed out this way, this would be my every day IPA. (901 characters)

THIS BEER IS HUGE!!! LOVE IT! Tons of Hops, so beware if that’s not your bag. Lots going on with the variety of hops used along with the pine and citrus, so it kicks you in the teeth and makes you think at the same time. Tastes great in the bottle but if you see it on tap jump on it. One great beer. (302 characters)

Big, Big thanks to Mike for sending this Short's beauty over to me. Split into two small snifters between jac5084 and I.

A: Pours a hazy, glowing orange with a small head. The small yielding head may have been due to my prudent pour. Nice orange, copper color though without too sticky of a head.

S: Unimaginably good. Tons of citrus blasting hops right in your face. Mostly citrus, though a touch of grass and pine creep in to let you see their presence. Nice mango, pineapple and orange coupled with a touch of caramel sweetness.

T: Wow, top 5 IPAs hands down. Tons of mango, pineapple and apricot with a touch of residual sweetness. Not overly bitter, but on the finish some pine and grass comes in to balance the sweet fruit flavors. The caramel sweetness on the finish is just right to balance out the hoppy bitterness throughout the beer.

M/D: Spot on. Nice, moderately low carbonation for a creamy feel. Not too sticky, but you can feel this enveloping your tastebuds the whole way.

Thanks again Mike, this was a great beer! (1,036 characters)

Appearance: Huma pours an amber color with two fingers of white head. Keeps light retention.

Smell: The strong hop content brings a citrus smell, with grapefruit perhaps standing out. There’s also a light floral and earthy presence there.

Taste: The taste brings a full, big hop presence. The hops really stand out. Grapefruit, maybe some raisin, and a lot of soapy, crisp bitterness are the key notes here. There’s a good balance of light caramel malts in the background, but the crisp, fresh, bitter, and clean hops are what really stand out. And boy, do they ever.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is relatively high, but not too much so. The beer has a full, but not thick, feel.

Overall: This was an excellent, even top-notch, example of an American IPA. One of the best I’ve had, in fact. For the hop fan, this is gonna be a great choice anytime. (856 characters)

12 oz. bottle with no created on date punched.

Looks bottle-conditioned from the yeast on the bottom of the bottle. Pours an almost clear orange bronze with golden edges. Small, gauzy, lacy, off-white head. Very hoppy nose with appetizing doses of pineapple, resin, fresh pine sap, and citrus. Candied fruits and sweet malts chime in for some aromatic balance.

Taste follows the nose, with very fresh hop flavor right off the bat. Numbing herbal bitterness with equal parts pine sap and pineapple. Sugary cookie and fruit malt makes a brief appearance before the hop bitterness cranks it up into the finish. Some aspirin and raw hop bitterness show up in the end. Dry, lip-smacking finish. My tongue is comfortably numb. Medium-bodied with a creamy feel down the hatch. Nicely carbonated. If you like raw, dry-hop intensity, this is the beer for you! (853 characters)

Pours a murky peach color with a small white head. Aroma is a nice citrusy hoppiness with some tangerines and grapefruits, malt backbone combines to include a sweet peach aroma. Flavor is big citrus esp tangerine with some grapefruit. Peach also comes thru but lighter in the taste than in the aroma. Big size bitterness in the finish with some pepperiness and decent amt of dryness. This beer is big for the style, alcohol isn't too over the top, but hop aromas and taste are big and bold and the bitterness is on the same level as some dipa's. Great beer that can fortunately be had locally, hopefully Short's other beers will see larger distribution in the future. (667 characters)

A: heavy orange with the addition of golden hues and a dash of burnt yellow bronze color. Bleach white foam is above average, as well as the lacing. Some large sheets of lace exist and are clinging to my glass, loaded and laced

S: soft biscuity malts with an intensely strong citrus edge. Fruity orange notes run amuck with whiffs of pineapple. Some spiciness is hidden at the back of each continued whiff. All in all this possess a mighty hop presence in the nose

T: imagine a car. In the trunk the contents are toasted pale malts, caramel, some nuttiness, and maybe a sugar cookie. The passengers are all hops (oranges, pines, and grapefruits) while the car is fueled by oily alpha sticky goodness. Overall this is a potent hop vehicle. Continually bitter and snappy, a near tongue destroyer. Leave it to Short's to produce something so tasty and raw

M: medium body and ample bubbles proved perfect support for the wonderful palate of flavors. This is quickly turning into one of my all time favorite IPAs

D: simply wonderful (1,031 characters)

A - 4.25 - NIce golden amber color with a thick white head on top of it that leaves awesome lacing (there's some hops in this mo). The bottle is cool as f*** too.
S - 4.5 - Awesome orange juice lice smell to it. Pine, grapefruit, bitter hops.
T - 4.5 - Very bitter, grapefruit and pine taste. Orange zest. Some bready malts in the background. Solid Michigan IPA, better than Two Hearted, more like the west coast IPAs (Ruination, Hop Stoopid).
M - 4.5 - Light-medium, alc covered, aftertaste is bitter grapefruit.
O - 4.5 - This is a very bitter beer, and very good. Grapefruit and pine are the main flavors. Less sweet than other IPAs, more bitter. (653 characters)

A fantastic IPA and truly yet another winner from Shorts. This bottle was consumed on the afternoon of 05/09/2009 and poured into a pint glass.

The rich velvet like amber pour was a touch cloud and capped by a wonderful light light of white that reached a height of around of two inches before dropping down with copious amounts of side glass lacing. Rich and biting citrus hops across the nose, bitter with a sweet orange peel like zest to it. Super smooth flavor here with a nice medium bodied feel and more then ample carbonation. The biting hop note mellowed mid palate as some nice balancing came into play with light buttery like malts and a light hint of grain before a smackdown of hops came across my tongue and shattered all hop of anything but a luscious and dry finish.

Such a super drinkable and wonderful IPA. Classic in the west coast style this was a drinker all the way. I would dine on this one daily and above all, a fantastic beer. (953 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into an imperial pint. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!

A: Pours an obviously unfiltered glowing peach color with 1 1/2 fingers of khaki colored cream on top. Loads of gorgeous lace left behind and some whispy tendrils of suspended yeast were spotted floating in the glass.

S: Btter, pungeant aromas of orange, tangerine, and grapfruit that gradually morph to something more spicy and piney. Nice underlying scents of caramel and biscuity malt.

T: Tastes just as it smells. Glorious! Baked biscuits lend the perfect amount of balance to the hop explosion going on here. As it warms, flavors of pineapple and fresh cut grass began to emerge. Loads of white pepper in the finish.

M: Big, sticky, and astringent with a healthy white pepper zing. I swear, I was able to taste this for more than a minute after each sip. Yeah, the finish lasts a little while.

D: What a fantastically hoppy AIPA! I had to continually remind myself to not guzzle the contents of my glass. Michigan, Great Lakes, great times, incredible beer! (1,053 characters)

Traveled up to Michigan this past weekend, and I had to grab one of these guys to try it out.

An average pour got me a finger and a half of very dense, sudsy looking head. The body is a translucent amber color with a steady column of bubbles making their way to the top. Nice retention on the head, and a decent bit of lacing too.

Mmmmm, hops. I smell pine, grapefruit and a touch of mango.

Starts off piney then eases a grapefruit flavor in on you. Very nice bitter, it sticks with you. Gets a bit of a wheat bread touch and a hint of orange zest on the back end.

Medium bodied. Slight stickiness, big dry finish. Good bitter stays with you. Carbonation seems light, but this doesn't detract at all.

Great IPA! (718 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle.

A: Two finger head. Cloudy dark orange. Outstanding lacing.
S: Holy Hops! Very Strong smell of Grapefruit and Pine. Faint sweetness.
T: Starts sweet with grapefruit coming on strong. Finishes dry with a very long lingering bitterness (hoppy resin).
M: Smooth and Creamy. Overwhelming bitterness on the back of the tongue (in a good way).
D: Great the lingering bitterness makes you keep going in for another drink. Solid IPA.

Most definatly in my Top Five IPA's. Will be in my IPA purchase rotation for the future. Amazing when fresh. (566 characters)

An absolute dream for any hop lover. Although perhaps "over the top" for some, I think it's my favourite beer, ever!

Clear amber with decent carbonation and head, but limited lacing. Beautiful hops and tropical fruits in the aroma, followed by a multi-faceted flavour that covers the full spectrum from the sweetness of caramelized malts and pineapple / mango to the lingering bitterness of a brilliantly hopped finish.

I've enjoyed this beer in several different towns and pubs, from both taps & bottles. The quality has been consistent and the beer wonderful. I am now enjoying one of the last bottles I brought back from Michigan - much older than it should be - and am absolutely stunned that it's as good as I remember...

Bought a couple of 6 packs during a quick trip to Michigan. It wasn't quite as good as what I remembered from 3 years ago, but it is a fine beer. It is massively hopped, but it has enough malt to up the alcohol and overall flavor. A long-time favorite beer that didn't disappoint. (280 characters)

Wow, wow, wow. What an unbelievable beer! This maybe my favorite IPA ever! This is simply great, especially as its not an imperial/double IPA. It has a deeper golden shade with some red and orange tones. Slightly hazy appearance, but pretty clean and crisp. I got a 2 finger that settled to a nice lace that stayed throughout the drink. Aromas of citrus, pineapple and grapefruit mostly, but I detect some blood orange and mango to. Holy hops! I get that fresh piney and deeper grass and herb overtones that give way to subtle breads malts in the background. The first sip gives way to a sharp explosion of hops and citrus, bitterness, pine, more hops, a more refined 'aged' hop flavor (maybe just the blend of hops they use created this taste for me), a subtle bitter sweetness balanced with the hops and citrus. I get some sweet maltiness of light toasted malts near the end, but a nice aftertaste of hops comes back to end the drink. Very very nice in my humble opinion. Hop-forward, similar to some of the Stone brews, very unique though, stands by itself as one of the best IPA's on the market. Definatly one of short's best brews. An absolute legend!

Notes from 11/15/10

A:Pours a nice looking orange color with a fluffy white head that falls fairly quickly,
excellent lacing is left down the glass

S:Very juicy citrus hops come thru up front along with slight tropical hint as well, along with that a nice malt backbone in there as well

T:Up front you get a small taste of the hops that lead in the malt backbone of the brew
in the middle, the backend is well the hops really start to takeover with a citrus and
tropical flavor that lingers around long after the sip is gone.

M:Body is where you would want it to be, not to thin but not to heavy. Palate is left
sticky from the hops and a little dry as well just enough that you want to take another sip.

D:With so many great breweries in Michigan its hard not find some great brews but
I'm go ahead and say that Shorts IPA is one of my favorite ones in the state. Easy
drinkability, super great taste, and all around enjoyable. Shorts is doing it, score some if
ya can. (978 characters)

Pours a hazy orange-ish color with a white head. In the aroma, citrus grapefruit like hops. In the taste, pine hop like dryness, and a grapefruity citrus undertone of sweetness. A bitter and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry, pine like hop aftertaste. Nice big hops, somewhat balanced, very nice. (298 characters)

12oz bottle picked up during a weekend trip through michigan. drank out of my sierra nevada hop tulip glass

A- this one pours out a darkish hazy golden colored body with a small layer of bright white head on it. the head lasts for a long time and leaves rings of lacing behind.

S- faint caramel and toffee malts and a huge rush of hops. very piny and citrusy.

T- the taste is equally as unbalanced as the smell. a little bit of sweet caramel and toffee malts upfront, and then a barrage of hops. lots of citrus and pine resin. grapefruit. some earthy notes as well.

M- medium bodied and well carbonated. very bitter and leaves the mouth feeling dry. no complaints here.

D- a great IPA and something id love to have on my local shelves. more please, this one is great (774 characters)

Perfect cobweb lacing creates rocky mountains of foam over a hazy, bottle conditioned light rust body.

In the nose: fresh crushed mint and raw hops. Lightly sweetened oats and a fresh snapped pine tree branch. A little sweet plum in the back.

Taste: All that from the nose except toast the oatmeal and add a little soapiness.

Light, though not too crisp. A little chew, but not much.

A fantastic beer that I had first on tap at Foran's in Detroit. (451 characters)

Appearance: nice, long lasting white head. Beer was a beautiful golden color. Excellent carbonation.

Smell: Definite, but not over-powering hop aroma.

Taste: Nice bitterness throughout and melding nicely with the soft, malty taste at the end. An excellent combination of hop and malt flavorings.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, soft carbonation on the tongue.

Overall: A great example of an American IPA. Classic in its hoppiness, looks, and taste. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a more restrained IPA rather than a DIPA hop bombs. (550 characters)

Pours a lovely, slightly orange amber with a densely packed white head that sticks around forever and leaves super sticky lacing. The aroma is all I could ask for in an IPA. Citrus grapefruit punch with caramel malt sweetness holding it up. My parents brought this to me from Michigan and it must be a pretty fresh bottle, because the smell filled the room when I popped the cap. The flavor differs slightly from the aroma in that I pick up a lot more pine than in the nose. Don't get me wrong, it is still a grapefruit party in my mouth, but pine is busting a move on my tongue as well. It definitely has a very complex hop flavor and I am also picking up some herbal notes as well as orange and lemon. Bitterness is pretty strong, but I still find that the malt balances it quite well. The malt is very nice with some toffee notes that do not overpower the pale malt base. Yum. The mouthfeel is medium with a nice dry finish and carbonation that is right on the money. This is a very drinkable IPA, and I am looking forward to my next trip to MI so I can have it on tap again. It is quite depressing that Short's came onto the scene about the time I moved away from Northwest Michigan. I highly recommend this beer. (1,217 characters)
