BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Thanks to heliosphan for sending me a couple of these. Pours the way an IPA should, Color is a bright murky orange, with about a finger of white heading. Big whiff of metallic and citrus juice from the hops. I get oranges, grapefruit, lemon and tea. Wow, when I taste this beer the only thing that comes to my mind is the color green. The hops are very bitter, and really rush in in a resiny, oily way. Specific tastes I am picking up are mint leaves, pine, grapfruit, earthy tones. Medium body on this one, and as far as drinkability is concerned, be warned. The amount of hops in this takes it damn close to being a palate destroyer. Still, I could go through a six pack of this easily, and I am sure any hop love would say the same thing. Hopefully this is one of the offerings available at the Road House towards the end of this month. Cheers

Pours a cloudy yellow/gold with white head.

The smell is pineapple and fresh cut grass.

The taste is a brief amount of flavor on the front consisting of an earthy citrus followed by a mouth puckering bitterness.

A nice creamy mouthfeel to top it all off.

Bright harvest orange with golden honey colored highlights. The three finger crown easily qualifies as eye candy. The craggy upper surface looks like a moonscape and the foam is as sticky as all get out, which is proven by a glass that is beautifully blasted with lace.

As expected (given the color), lightly toasted malts take some of the citrus zesty edge off the American hops. White grapefruit and orange are most prominent. We aren't talking the olfactory overload that is uber-fresh Bell's Two Hearted, but the aroma is mighty pleasing if you like da hops.

Via the website, Short's told me to expect 'enormous amounts' of hops that hit 'like a punch in the face'. While that isn't quite what I'm getting, Huma-Lupa-Licious is a highly hopped IPA that can compete with all but the very best. Then again, I have no idea how old this bottle is. I'm pretty sure it's pretty fresh.

There isn't as much toasted breadiness and nuttiness as feared. Probably a single-digit percentage of Munich, no more. Hop flavor and bitterness is becoming cumulative as the ounces fly by, which is always nice. Yes sir, this little beauty will give most hopheads that alpha acid smack and tickle that they crave.

In addition to white grapefruit pith and peel, resinous pine is present as well. The final pour murks up the liquid something serious. It also adds even more flavor and bitterness. Looks like the taste score deserves a bump after all. Never fear, the drinkability score was there already.

There's no letdown when it comes to the body/mouthfeel. It's at least medium for the style and is expertly bubbled. It's getting so that I can almost predict this score by the sound of the pour.

Short's Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA grew on me from first gulp to last. This is definitely a fresh bottle and is a hoptasty treat of the highest order. It's also the second best American IPA brewed in the state of Michigan. Care to guess which is the best? The brewers have every right to be proud of this one.

A - A cloudy orange body contains some black particulate floating about. A generous two finger off white head tops the body. This head is about as ice as they get with dimples and a generous veil of lacing down the inside of my glass. Looks dandy.

S - A nice citrus hop aroma permeates my nasal membranes. There is also a bit of bready malt mixing in with those hops to add some complexity to the nose.

T & M - The nose did not betray the tongue. A heavy hop presence is balanced with some bready malt. The hops are both citric and piney in character. Medium bodied...the hops continue to come through beginning, middle and end. Certainly 140 IBU's of hop bitterness being represented here.

D - This is a dandy IPA...I'm really glad my friends hooked me up with this one! If you like hop bombs, this one will be right up your alley.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip

A- Pours a hazy, orange-amber with a 2 inch off white head that slowly fades leaving a nice lace.

S- Aromas of bitter citrus and pine are prominent. There is a very slight hint of malt but the hops take center stage.

T- A citrussy (grapefruit?) start followed by a very pronounced bitterness. I detect a slight bready flavor but it is overshadowed by the bitterness that commands me to keep sipping.

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O- A very solid IPA. I wish this was distributed in Mass. so I can consume on a regular basis.

Reviewed 8-22. Taken from notes

A - Gold with a sticky white head

S - The first thing my wife said was 'it smells like grapefruit' and I wouldn't agree more. I got some mango hops too...all fruity hops here

T - Dry, grassy and piney. Where did the fruits go? Hey whatever, the taste is bitter and chewy. What a great IPA

M - Dry and medium carbonation. The hops really keep your tongue begging for water or more or this beer.

D - I really like this beer. Not over the top high in ABV but very hoppy. Two of my favorite IPAs are Masala Mama and Furious and this one is right up there.

Well done Shorts. I think this was at it's peak of freshness because the hops really smack you in the face. I got a chance to try some new beers that I can't get here in MN and am very pleased with this offering.

Many thanks to GordianKnot for the chance to taste this one. My first offering from Shorts. Poured from bottle into my brooklyn snifter. Pours a cloudy yellow/orange color. decent head, some lacing on the glass. Smell- applejuice? bread, some citrus notes. Taste- first is a citrus blast, next next is a caramel sweet notes from the malt, then at the end a total blast of hops bitterness! wow! this one really hits you hard at the end- there are a ton of hops in here at 140 IBUs! I didn't see that coming, I didn't get much on the nose. This is really a celebration of citrus hops- so nice, light, tropical, airy, but BITTER! I'm really pretty impressed by this- maybe the hoppiest regular IPA I have ever had.

Picture a slightly paler "Two-Hearted with some more brown in and you have Huma-Lupa-Licious. ( The comparisons to Two-hearted will continue because any IPA made in MI has that as its comparator.) Huge head on the pour from the growler and the slightly off-white head leaves sheets and ring of lace on the pint.
Aroma was citrus, pine trees, some hay, very pale malt.
Flavor was slight pale malt followed by some light toffee and a citrus and resiny finish.
Mouthfeel was modestly smooth and malty for a split second and the barrage and complex and strong, but not overpowering hop profiles take over. First wave of bittering seems more light and perfumy but this is followed quickly by a 2nd salvo of teeth-hurting, taste bud grinding, resin and gritty bitterness takes over. Really builds a crescendo of layered bitterness. More complex as I work through the growler. Very nice beer.
Drinkability is very high. Stands up strong to Two-Hearted. Different yet alike in some ways this beer is a classic. Definitely have to get back to Bellaire sometime soon.

A - Orange appearance with a creamy white head, settles to a film that covers the surface nicely. Very hazy, looks like it'll have promising hops.

S - Excellent, you are hit with a lot of hops the second you pop off the cap. That's really the main thing that you smell. They are very crisp and pronounced, definitely a grapefruit aroma.

T - Just the way I like it. The hops are predominant and last throughout the entire time and lingers nicely after the fact. The taste is slightly fruity but is still dominated by hop bitterness. The hops give this beer a rather dry aftertaste. Malt is virtually undetectable.

M - I like it. It goes in smooth but pretty light/medium feeling. The entire time that it's in your mouth you can feel the hops and it's a good feeling.

D - Some people may disagree and find this to have too bitter of an aftertaste. Personally, I can't think of a greater taste to perpetuate then the hops that Huma Lupa Licious leaves behind. I just want more!

As the people who rated this beer lower showed, it's not a beer for someone who is looking for an even beer that balances between hops and malts or offers extremely complex flavours. I personally find that to go even more in favour with this beer, the hop flavours are fantastic.

Beer pours a slightly hazy light burnt orange with a white head that has decent retention some puddling.

Aroma is biting piney hops with an underlying bready maltness. I also get some vegetal hops. Also some faint pineapple. Spicy hops. Guess it is complex.

Right off the bat more piney bitter bitter hops that fade into slight lemon zest. Big bready malt backing it up. Very peppery hops. Almost feels like I'm drinking pine sap. Verges on being to bitter but doesn't cross the line.

Mouthfeel is tingly from the hop bitterness and good carbonation. Medium bodied. huge bitter finish

Overall a very unique ipa. The hop character seems more suited for a dipa. Just a huge beer disguised as a plain old ipa. india pine ale. Great contrast to the typical citrus imperials/doubles

Pours an amber-copper color. Has a thin, lacy head in brandy snifter. Some retention left in spots on the glass.

Has a hoppy and citrus aroma. Very pleasant and aromatic. Pine is also noticeable.

Huma has a delicious sweet and bitter taste. It has a tasty complexity to it. Huma has a strong hop presence. I taste pineapple, grapefruit, and orange. Black pepper gives it a certain spiciness.

Medium-bodied and decent carbonation. A great IPA that I have known for only a year now. A great beer from a great brewery.

This is a beer for people who love the bitter bite of hops. There's a bit of malt and sweetness down low, but it can't compete with the bitterness.

If you like the hops to dominate your beer experience, and you're an IPA fan, I recommend this. It's one of my favorite beers for summer. It's on my exceptional beer list.

I'd go again.

Thanks to Kegatron for this bottle.

Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with thick frothy off-white head into a shaker pint glass. Nice retention and some decent lacing cling. Smells of citrus, pine, caramel, and biscuit, definitely an IPA. Tastes of grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, and pine up front, like someone shoved a whole slew of citrus fruit salad into your mouth all at once. What follows is some caramel sweetness and biscuit notes for balance before some earthy tones and a very bitter grassy finish. Medium in body with good carbonation. Crisp and citrusy, fairly balanced but the grassy finish seems to linger a little too much for me. A great IPA nevertheless, definitely a hop lover's dream.

12oz bottle served in a pint glass.

pours a clear medium amber tone while yielding a finger, finger and a half of foamy off-white head. decent retention and lacing all over the place. pretty much nails what my expectations are for the appearance of an IPA. fairly aromatic nose offers citric hops in abundance. secondary notes of pine and some florally characters with the hint of a sweet, malty backbone present in the background.

taste delivers on the nose, maybe even exceeds it. the citrus headlines the show with the pine and floral hoppiness and some biscuit-y malt rounding out the supporting cast. fairly bitter. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.

overall, i'm digging this IPA a lot. very tasty. while i wouldn't necessarily throw it in with the best of the best, i could see it earning a spot in my regular rotation... if only short's distributed to the boston area.

Aside from the finger's worth of foam atop this beer, it looks like a glass full of unfiltered clover honey. Bright orange, glowing with haziness. Great head retention, and lots of lace leaving rings down the glass.
Smells fiercely hoppy. I can smell it from where it's sitting on the patio table in front of me. Sweet malt is there, but the hops dominate with a lemony zest. Fruity and pungent.
The flavor opens rather sweet for a split second, then the hops overtake the palate "like an unstoppable rebel force". Fruity and floral in it's bitterness, lemon and orange peel with a bit of pine. Big bodied and greasy with all the hop oils. The malt keeps the bitterness from getting too out of control with a simple, candied sweetness. Complexity is mostly derived from the hops, the malt seems to be there in an essential, unseen role, like the black-clad ringside cameraman capturing a fight. Hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for a long, long time. I tend to like over the top IPAs like this, so I'm sure my six pack will go quickly. This one's a real palate blaster. I imagine it would be hard to taste most other brews after a bottle of this.

Huge thanks to eyebrews for lugging a case of this nectar down to DLD! Jack, you are the salt of the earth!

Pours a hazy copper with a thick, white head. It leaves a fair amount of stickiness as you continue to enjoy this delicious IPA. Smell is filled with different kinds of hops:, floral, citrus, pine -- and there is some malt present -- a nice biscuity malt.

A lot of citrus as you work your way through this. It is a touch bitter on the outset, but it balances out as you do. I get hints of caramel here to... just so much at work.

This is easily one of my favorite IPAs. It's so fresh, which no doubt helps its cause, but I'm sold.

Yes MICHIGAN does kick arse on all brews that are hoppy. Short's brew is another awesome beer from Michigan where the best beers are brewed in the WORLD. This IPA is awesome not as good as Hopslam but pretty close. Taste like if I was licking the floors of heaven. One of the best IPAs I have tasted. Delicious!

A- translucent burnt orange, almost a bit brown. Decent head with fair carbonation.

S- Grapefruit, pine, and hops stand out and are quite potent. Slight malt, but definitive hop aromas.

T- Hops barrage your tongue upon first contact. Leaves a great bitter aftertaste. The malt is very underpowered, but plays enough of a part to keep it from going over the edge. Leaves a ton of bitterness for an IPA, and it probably has enough hoppiness of a DIPA. I'm finding it more addictive each time I have it. Many to most other IPA's fall in the shadow of this one in regards to hops.

M- Slightly thinner than average and a bit too much carbonation.Leaves a slightly dry and sticky finish.

D- Easy to down, and a prime example of a hoppy IPA if there ever was one. Leaves a very bitter aftertaste which I quite enjoy, but was a little overwhelming the first time I tried it. I never go to Michigan for beer without picking this up. On top of all the hoppiness, it's fairly economic as well. 11-12$ for a 6pk.

Recieved on a recent trade from rhoadsrage. Pours a crimson amber with a foamy fluffy head that leaves nice thick lace on the glass. Smell has a candy like hop quality to it. I can detect citrus in the nose but also pear like quality. Taste is a hopcoaster with big upfront pine taste and sweet nectar on the sides of your toungue, overall hop finish towards the end. This one fine crafted IPA hoppy and to the point.

Picked up a growler on my first visit to HopCat in GR. Worth the trip and the purchase. This is a great example of why I love IPAs.

A-Golden amber/copper color, fairly transparent. Heavy head on a hard pour in to a mug fit for a bomber. Lacing from top to bottom.

S-Very citrusy and floral. Combo of hops and alcohol stings the nostrils slightly. Well balanced.

T-Again, very well balanced. The bitterness of the hops does not overpower the full flavor of this beer. The citrus cools the palette nicely.

M-Sticky and good. Flavor sticks to all areas of the tongue and mouth, leaving a nice reminder of the beer.

D-Being an IPA lover, I would drink this all day, and yesterday I did. I only wish I had another growler to put back.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Pours an orange/amber color with a creamy off-white head that rose a full two fingers. Good retention and loads of lacing. This is a pretty beer.

White grapefruit and oranges up front with some toasted malt peeking through. Maybe a little more than I like, which detracts from the citrus goodness. Some notes of pine resin/oil round out the nose.

Pithy grapefruit and oranges burst onto the palate. The toasted malt lays much lower on the palate than in the nose, allowing the resinous, oily pine and citrus flavors to stand tall. There is an uppercut of bitterness that builds with each sip.

Medium body with perfect carbonation. Chewy, thick and oily all the while finding a way to be smooth and creamy. The build up of bitterness coats and really sticks to the gums.

I had somewhat high expectations for this beer and it did not disappoint. Quickly becoming one of my favorites in the style. This is on my short list to answer of the age old question: "If you could only have one IPA for the rest of your life, what would it be?"

A - Orange-red hue with about an inch of head which laces nicely.

S - Lotsa hops. but hints of grapefruit and other assorted citrus

T - This beer is about the bitter. It is assertive to say the least. it however, remains balance with some lighter citrus in the front and back ends.

M - Ends dry, but has the right about of carbonation.

D - I had two, wanted more. It is tasty, and balanced well with the spicy tuna I had.

M: actually it's thinner than expected for 140 IBUs and it's well balanced with just enough malt but not too much for an IPA
O: I ordered another; enough said
