Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Beer is orange golden in colour with a very small white head that fades quickly.

Nose contains tropical and citrus fruits- tangerine and orange. A bit of bready malt. Some pine. Nice scent.

Taste is quite bitter, with some tangerine and orange flavours. A good amount of pine. Actually has a bit of a spicy flavour to it. Some caramel. Finish in particular is very bitter.

Medium bodied, moderate to highly carbonated. Oily.

Overall, quite good.

Appearance: Small beige head on a beautiful hazy amber - orangey pour. No lacing, retention or apparent effervescence.

Smell: Medium high in intensity. Notes of lupulin dust, tangerine, fresh hop character at the front. Pineapple and other exotic notes on the back.

Taste: Medium high in intensity. At the front there's a yeast bitey, dried leaves like character. Back notes include ethanol followed by orange / tangerine play.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium low carbonation. Medium high bitterness. Long lasting astringent taste. ABV comes through a lot in the palate.

Overall: Decent complexity, questionable balance. Aroma is a stand out in this piece, but everything else is decent at worst. It's not one of the more sessionable IPA's I've had - mainly because of the aggressive bitterness on the tame body - but ironically feels very fresh to the palate.

Poured into pint glass. Very minimal head presented and the beer had a orangish hay color. Aroma gave off a slightly floral and earthy scent. Not a whole lot going on with aroma.

Tasted insanely bitter! Did not know the IBU's over 100 until after I drank this but it makes sense! Its like drinking a bitter orange peel. There's also some notes of grass. The moment you drink it, the beer immediately starts out bitter and it finishes bitter. There was not much malt presence, just straight up bitterness from the hops. Without the malt presence, it seemed something was almost missing. But I was quickly over it considering the large flavor from the hops.

Overall this is a great beer. Not too complex but still a fantastic beer to drink if you appreciate the intense bitterness that some IPA's provide. There were no notes of sweetness in this beer yet it still was delicious.

Serving: Bottle into tulip
Served: 18 July 2013; no bottled on/best by date

Appearance: A hazy copper color with a one finger white head that dissipates to nothing but a white ring around the edges. Lacing where the tulip is thin, but the head seems to collapse as the glass opens up. Like the bottle art- simple yet tasteful.

Smell: Floral hops, some pine in there as well. Not getting much in terms of malt, save some sweetness. Smells wonderfully clean, and the hops don't blow you out of the water before you even take a sip, suggesting some sort of balance.

Taste: Sweet, caramel malts masterfully compliment the hops in this one. I was blown away by the malt sweetness on this one when I first sipped it. The front of your mouth is flooded with this maltiness and then the hops kick in as you start to swallow, really asserting themselves on the back of the tongue and bitterness dominates. The malt notes come out a bit more as the carbonation begins to dissipate. This beer finishes very dry.

Mouthfeel: The initial maltiness makes this beer almost feel chewy at first, but not in the same way as a hefeweizen or stout or other "thick" beers. I like the carbonation on this one- it really helps drive home the blast of hops and intense bitterness.

Overall: This is a fantastic IPA. If you like hop bitterness, this is your IPA. The bittering hops, however, compliment the aroma and flavor hops to create a multi-dimensional, hopped up experience. It really is a "hop and malt theme park in your mouth" as the bottom of the bottle-art says. Would highly recommend.

12oz bottle poured into a Russian River stemmed snifter today, 7/12/2013. Thanks to Benish.

Aroma: Very piney, citrusy notes. Perhaps orange. Has a nice, seemingly sticky caramel sweetness that hangs in the nose. Very strong and pleasing nose.

Colour: Pours a hazy dark copper body with a 1cm white head that leaves a sticky lacing as the beer disappears down my gullet. Retention is solid, nothing special.

Flavour: Hoppy as hell. Very bitter pine complemented by a little bit of orange, nectarine flavour supplemented with a strong bit of caramel sweetness. It's a bit of a one-dimensional beer but this is what the name of the beer advertises.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, resinous and almost sticky. Aftertaste is a stinging piney bitterness that lingers quite a while and gets spread all over as I move my tongue around my mouth. Carbonation is good. Drinkable, slight hint of heat.

Overall: A very bitter piney IPA. Not the best IPA, but it is a very good one that is sure to satisfy any hophead's lupulin cravings. Very bitter and piney if that's up your alley.
