American IPA |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Thanks to Dave (d0b) for throwing one of these my way. Served in my trusty Surly pint glass.

A - One and a half fingers of blonde-white foam that dissipates slowly and leaves some nice but spotty lacing. Murky orange-gold color with some nice glow to it. Pretty standard looking IPA that could have used a little more volume.

S - Pretty potent - I could smell it a foot from the glass. Copious sweet citrus and tropical fruit flavors from the hops, but also a significant amount of caramel maltiness, which is surprisingly for such a fresh brew. There's also a little fresh-cut grass in there. Again, pretty good but unspectacular.

T - Bitter! Starts sweet enough, but morphs into a palate-busting hop monster. The first sensation is the sweet caramel and fruit flavors, but then it just hits you with hoppy bitterness and pine that sticks around long after you swallow. It's a mellower version of Kuhnhenn Extreme IPA in that sense.

M - Lots of active carbonation tingle - might be a bit to lively for me. Goes down pretty smooth and easy, and leaves a bit of cottonmouth to go with the residual oily hop resin.

D - This is pretty palate fatiguing but otherwise is pretty easy drinking for any lover of hops. ABV is hidden well, and carbonation isn't over the top.

It's a very good IPA for those in the mood for hoppy bitterness. Nice contrast to the other Michigan single IPAs, which are more tropical fruit-centric.

A: pours clear appealing amber orange with one inch white head

S: predominantly citrus hop aroma, some spicy notes as well. can smell gentle carmely sweetness from the malt

T: bitterness attacks the pallet, faint malty sweetness and some spicyness towards the back of the tongue

M: light to medium body with firm carbonation, lingering mouthfeel

D: Nice carbonation and lighter body combined with pleasant taste make this a fairly drinkable brew

12 oz. bottle with no created on date punched.

Looks bottle-conditioned from the yeast on the bottom of the bottle. Pours an almost clear orange bronze with golden edges. Small, gauzy, lacy, off-white head. Very hoppy nose with appetizing doses of pineapple, resin, fresh pine sap, and citrus. Candied fruits and sweet malts chime in for some aromatic balance.

Taste follows the nose, with very fresh hop flavor right off the bat. Numbing herbal bitterness with equal parts pine sap and pineapple. Sugary cookie and fruit malt makes a brief appearance before the hop bitterness cranks it up into the finish. Some aspirin and raw hop bitterness show up in the end. Dry, lip-smacking finish. My tongue is comfortably numb. Medium-bodied with a creamy feel down the hatch. Nicely carbonated. If you like raw, dry-hop intensity, this is the beer for you!

Derek really took care of introducing me to Short's regular beers - thanks for another awesome extra!

A: Hazy because I couldn't wait for the sediment to settle out, this one is a gorgeous orange with a two-finger thick dense white head. Great retention, intricate spiderweb-like lacework.

S: Floral and citrus hops dominate the nose, with juicy oranges being predominant. Pretty darned big centennial aroma, I'd be surprised if Two Hearted wasn't the inspiration for this beer

T: Hop bitterness dominates to open things up with plenty of citrus bitterness with a moderate hop flavor to carry things through. Again, there's floral and citrus flavors on the palate. Malt is practically non-existent, this one finishes dry and pretty darned bitter

M: Light in body with soft carbonation, which only amplifies the perceived bitterness. Great finish, a touch too bitter, perhaps?

D: Enjoyable, but the balance between bittering and flavor hops is lacking, and this will keep me from drinking a whole sixer.

Color: sits clear burnt orange

Smell: great malt sweetness dominated by piney and citrusy hops.

Taste: great citrus and pine notes. even tugged a little at the glands behind my cheeks on the first sip. little bit of sweetness to round it out nicely. significantly dry, bitter finish

Mouthfeel: low-med body with decent amount of carbonation.

Notes: simply? superb IPA. it isnt anything special, so it didnt blow me out of the water, but as far as just a straight IPA goes, if youre looking for a good amount of bitterness, call this a job well done.

Picked up a sixer of bottles today... Glad this is finally available in a bottle!

A- A clear golden color with about a finger width of white head. Lacing is spider web like.

S- Bursting with hops. Citrus and pineapple like in the nose.

T- A very unbalanced, delicious beer. Very much hop heavy with tones of fruity deliciousness. Citrus fruits, most noticably pineapple and grapefruit. Backend brings a bitter lingering taste in the mouth. Initially I did get a bit of a caramel malt, but it was immediately overpowered by the hops.

M- Light body, very bitter potent aftertaste.

D- Outstandingly drinkable... definitely sessionable. Thank you Short's for beginning to bottle this beauty. It'll become a regular in my rotation.

Bottle courtesy of HiAIPA poured into pint glass.

Pours a bright, almost irredescent, completely hazy orange with a fluffy and short-lived white head. It recedes to a ring quickly and leaves only a trace of lacing. The smell has a big resiny hop character but with some nice grapefruit and orange hints as well. The sweet malt base is in there as well but only as a compliment to the big hop aromas. Taste is earthy resin up front and a substantial malt backbone before giving way to a lingering citrus bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly sticky with a bitterness that tickles the tongue throughout. This is another very good brew from the guys at Shorts, a well-balanced yet very hoppy IPA.

Thanks again to Jeff for the opportunity to try it.

12 oz. bottle. Nice cloudy copper colored brew, with a thick off white head. The head retention is great. Near the end of the beer, there were some great sheets of lace covering the sides of the glass.

Bold citrus and pine hop aroma. A bit of caramel malt in the background, but make no mistake, this is one-sided.

Nice toasty, caramel malt flavor, followed by citrusy and piney flavors. Solid amount of bitterness, without being harsh. Lingering orange and peach flavor.

Good body. Very drinkable. Very solid.

Thanks to cmore for a sixer of this brew (and plenty of others!!!)

Nice looking nearly opaque IPA. Bronze colored and slightly milky. Head is almost white and has wonderful retentin and leaves a thin sticky lace everywhere.

This is a damn fine smelling IPA. Citrusy hops first and foremost with piney aspects slicing through. Sweet peach and tangerine, with a hint of pineapple, newly mown grass with a caramel malty hint evening things out.

And it carries over to the mouth. Not the best IPA but one of the most solid drinkable I've had in a long long time. Mouth and nose are closely related. A great bittering hop on the finish leaves you puckering for another sip. Hop flavors are full ambitious and ready to be taken. Drinkability is high for this IPA as it is nearly perfectly balanced between malt and hop. Another one waiter?

Probably may favorite India pale ale. It is very well balanced with a great hoppy taste that complements many types of dinners. A lot of IPAs taste the same to me, but this one tends to stand out and the creative name probably helps. I tend to prefer this in the summer even over fruiter and lighter beers.

On-tap at Jacoby's in Detroit.

Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA has a super-duper classic look: toasty golden brown complexion, a thin and natural haziness, a trim head. Everything is far from shipshape, however; its foam splashes all over the glass and leaves drapes of lacing worthy of being hung in my living room.

Some varieties of hops impart such convincing and colourful fruit flavours that you'd swear you were drinking fruit juice; with this beer, however, it feels more like you're sucking on the bitter skin of the fruit (as oppose to chowing down on the sweet flesh). There's a lot of dry orange and grapefruit pith and the acidity of lemons. Plenty of tree resins too.

There is also - as the aroma made plainly apparent - a lot of caramelly malt to help counter those flavours. It completely relaxes the beer's ramped-up alpha-acids. The tastes of tree sap have a similar effect: their gooey, serum-y texture and pine-like notes combine with the lemony citrus oils to become a little bit 'soapy' but also a lot more agreeable.

The brewery must have figured out how to balance bitter and sweet right down to the hundredth decimal place; practitioners of piphilology may have found a new challenge. While caramel malt cruises through the aftertaste, flashbacks of hoppy resins are constant and vivid.

Huma-Lupa-Licious is a pretty fan-frickin-tastic IPA. Devout hopheads might consider it a little mellow while those still apprenticing in the alpha-acid arts are likely to find it a wee menacing, but there's more than enough resiny bitterness to please the former and just enough sweet maltiness to relieve the latter. An IPA suitable for everyone!

I’ve had this on-tap, from a bottle, and now (this review) direct from the source, via growler.

This pours with a warming amber-caramel glow.

I get a combination of citrus and orange peel in the aroma. It has a forward bitterness which lasts and finishes dry, with flavors of orange peel and an intense citrus character dominating.

Enjoyed on tap at HopCat. Served in a nonic pint.

A: Pours a solid orange color with a thin white head forming on the pour. It recedes to a solid ring that leaves some sticky lace down the glass.

S: A little melon and fruity berry on the nose. Some caramel malt sweetness with a hint of biscuit.

T: The taste is like the nose, but a tad sweeter. Candied melon with fresh picked strawberry. Some light grass with some caramel sweetness and a biscuity malty.

M: Medium to light bodied with a medium high carbonation. Easily drinkable with a sweet fruit finish.

O: Really easy drinkable with a solid balance of flavors. Definitely the best Short's beer I've ever had.

On tap at DTW airport in nonic pint glass - slight haze, but nice floral and spicy aroma. Taste is bitter and dry, but appropriate for style with pleasant mouthfeel. Light lacing and head retention - this may partially be due to how clean the glass was. No off flavors detected. Positive overall impression.

Had on-tap at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, MI.

Appearance: A very hazy orange color. Lacing is very nice on this one.

Smell: Dominantly pine aromas, though there is some citrus in there as well. A pleasant IPA, but not the best smelling one I've had.

Taste/feel: Much like the smell -- a lot of the piney, earthy aromas come through in the taste, and there's very little citrus. The finish is also pretty intensely bitter, I found, and there's no real balance. There's some malt there, but this is an IPA for the hopheads, no doubt. The feel is probably the stand out, as it is very smooth, and quite creamy. I had this straight out of a fresh, just-put-in keg, so I feel like I had this beer as fresh as possible, basically.

Not my favorite IPA (just a bit too bitter and unbalanced for my liking), but I'd most definitely have it again, as it's an extremely solid Short's beer. One of their best year rounders, without a doubt.

A- A bright copper body with licks of green at the edges bubbles energetically under a solid finger of clean white head. Good lacing and reasonable head retention stick around the rims of the glass.

S- Lots of herbal hop flower up front with some mild citric sweetness and a bit of earthiness followed by light alcoholic tones.

T- Soft citric sweetness greets the palate and segues into a refreshingly sharp bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit or lemon rind. Bold and just barely saccharinr, a strong and earthy bitterness hangs on the tongue for quite some time, a welcome quality from such a hop bomb.

M- Just enough carbonation to carry the flavors and support the lengthy aftertaste, and even a bit of good chewiness. Right on for the style.

O- A very full-flavored and full-bodied IPA from a brewery I had previously only associated with dessert beers. Definitely recommended for hop heads who don't like their IPAs strong and not too sweet.

Had on-tap at Ashley's--Ann Arbor

A - Pours a light pale with a touch of caramel. Nice fluffy head that dissipates slowly and leaves a lot of lacing

S - Tons of hops, very earthy and piney. Not a ton of malt present, a bit of grapefruit and zest as well

T - Very, very piney. Tons of resin, grass, and pine needles. A touch of flower hops seems to offset some of the bitterness, but make no mistake, this is a bitter, bitter IPA.

M - Dries the mouth quite a bit. Full bodied taste. Finish is very bitter and mouth watering.

Overall - It was definitely a solid IPA. Not much by way of balance in this one, but a tasty IPA

I had this on-tap at the brewpub. Poured into a sample class.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber with a mild off white head and a little bit of lacing.

Smell: Some sweet bready malt along with hops that are quite herbal.

Taste: Follows closely from the smell. Bready malt backbone is balanced with herbal hop bitterness. Not a very bitter IPA, the finish is somewhat sweet.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mild tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This has a very different hop profile from most of the IPAs that I have had. It was a pleasant beer and I would have it again.

Pours a nice yellow/orange color w a nice two finger head. Good carbonation and lacing on this beer. Nose is that of malt, hops, grapefruit and maybe a little orange. Taste is good- almost really good. Very bitter, and continues to shred your taste buds the more it warms up. Very good example of the style. Feel is medium bodied, and definitely has a bite to it. Overall, this is definitely one to pick up if you can find it- I enjoyed it.

Had on-tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids, MI.

Poured an amber/copper color with a little bit of haze. Not much head to speak of, but it was consistent throughout leaving good lacing.

Smells of bitter hops, some citrus notes and pine. A good whiff left a slight burning sensation in the nostrils. This beers is about the hops.

Hop flavors come through as well with a bitter taste showing off the IBUs. Perhaps some of the alcohol is showing on this pour as well. Fairly dry in the mouth as well.

Overall, a very good IPA that focuses on the hop bitterness and does well doing so.

Consumed at Kalamazoo beer exchange. Rating from notes.

A & S: hazy orange colored beer. Small off-white head. A bit of lacing. Strong grapefruit (my work collage says it smells like yellow/white grapefruit vs pink grapefruit), and floral hops scents.

T & M: mid taste is a piney hop explosion, it has a great kick. finish is semi dry and bitter. Not a lot going on as far as I can tell as far as malt profiles go. On the sweet side of the IPA. Not very complex, but its what I look for in IPA’s. Medium to full bodied, with medium carbonation. It has that great combo of smooth but crisp.

O: Overall a damn good beer. No huge problems with this one, and my favorite out of the Short’s beers I’ve tried thus far. To explain more about some of my rating selections, I’m only giving it a 4 for taste because I didn’t think it was well balanced. I look for this kind of beer to drink, however if I were rating without bias I would say that there are a few parts of this beer that don’t make it world class (balance and complexity). So that’s my reasoning behind the 4 instead of something higher.
