American IPA |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Bartender mentioned that this is the HopCat Owner's favorite beer. I had heard of it before and it was a good thing to see that it was on tap at HopCat for my visit there two days ago. Review from notes taken at the bar. Poured into a clean, clear glass.

A Light brown yellow body with creamy head. 4.0

S Hops, sweet malt to the nose. Hops are not overwhelming in an unbalanced way. 4.0

T Hops predominate but there is a nice, sweet malt to balance them out. Hops taste lingered like you think that it might well into the aftertaste. Nicely made beer. I can see why someone who has tasted many great beers might find that this is one of their favorites. 4.5

M Full with malt, bitter hops. 4.0

D Good. I finished the pint without any problem. 4.0

Notes: a treat to find at HopCat, a world class Beer Advocate place.

A very nice presentation in the glass. Nice citrus notes in the smell. The taste is an explosion of flavors. Exceptional hop taste that gives way to several flavors. The aftertaste is intense but pleasant. Though this beer is intense, I feel as though I could drink a few more.

I had this on tap, it was a deep ochre orange color with a white head. The aroma was very hoppy with a resiny character. The flavor was also hoppy but with a great deal of malt backbone. It had a sticky mouthfeel that was great in this beer. You could definitely sense the extra alcohol though. The beer didn't have a head that lasted, but that might have been the pour.

On tap at the brew pub.

A-Slightly hazed, brilliant golden copper with a thick off-white head that reduced to a thin cap that never went away and left copious lace.

S-A big fat smack of orange/nectarine citrus and pineapple. Nice combination of citrus, tropical fruits and some spiciness. Supporting, mildly sweet caramel malts offer just enough support.

T-KA-BOOM! Big time hop flavours going on! Citrus, tropical fruits, pine and an underlying spiciness. This one is all about the hops but has just enough sweet biscuit malt backing.

M-Medium-light body, sharp and crisp with long lasting hop bitterness.

D-This one is about as good as a well crafted hop bomb can be. I had been anxiously waiting to have this one fresh on tap--in NO WAY did it disappoint! I could drink this one ALL day. Well done Joe and the crew at Short's!

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub then again at Ashley's in Anne Arbour. Was good at both places, but superior grapefruit flavours at the brewpub. Cloudy grapefruit with a white head. Good hoppy aroma, very good bitterness. Served cold. Lots of lace. Creamy mouthfeel but still bitterness in the mouth.Good representation of style, and still unique.

on-tap during the short's throwdown at the roadhouse, in brookline, ma, on april 24, 2009, the week of the craft brewers conference.

pale amber, almost clear with very faint haze. thin foamy head fades to wispy layer and ring. very good lacing.

aroma: piney and citrusy hop, but biscuity malt shows up right away, albeit in the back. fresh hops have fruity tones, as yest esters peek through as well.

taste: malty sweet caramel base, but the showcase is the hops; freshly citrusy and piney. boldly bitter but balanced with the malt. faint apple esters peek in. resinous finish.

medium body. otherwise moderate carbonation seems to give quite a prickly tingle upfront, almost too fizzy, but calms down after. resinous finish in the feel as well.

I enjoyed this beer on tap at Hopcat.

It was served to me in a pint glass crowned with about half an inch of bone white head, most of which dissipates early on, but leaves considerable amounts of lacing behind, almost coating the side of the glass at first. Toward the end, the lacing weakens its grip. The color is that of a beautiful dark sunset orange, and hazy enough to prevent you from seeing through the glass.

The nose is comprised of readily detectable aromas of citrus and candied pineapple. It smells great, but the scent becomes more difficult to recognize the longer the beer sits here.

Bitterness and spice hit the tongue first, which gives way to earthy/piney notes that dominate the palate. Grapefruit lingers in the background. Pine is by far the most prevalent flavor at first. As it warms, the citrus comes out to play. Overall, I'd say the flavor profile is evenly split between pine and grapefruit. Very crisp. Very nice. This is a great example of an American IPA. The drinkability is about what you'd expect for a bitter IPA. For me, it's very drinkable because I love bitter IPAs.

Much respect for this brewery. I have loved almost every single one of their beers that I have tried, and Huma is definitely one of my favorites. Thank God that Short's has finally started bottling their brews so they can get the recognition they deserve from the craft beer community.

Poured a nice dark golden pale and smelled strongly of citrusy hops. The taste was definitely more hops and finished with a solid bitterness. The mouthfeel was solid, medium-high but not so much that it lessened its drinkability, which was pretty high. Not too bitter and not too much alcohol. Overall a very good IPA. Another solid turnout from yet another solid Michigan brewery!

On draft at HopCatz. Golden amber in color with a sizable head. Smell is all hops. Resiny and floral. Right there with some of the better made IPA's. Mouthfeel was crisp and smooth for the amount of hops present. Really enjoyed the pint and didn't tire of drinking it. Very good.

I really like Shorts usually. This one, however, was not for me.

I had this at a new bar in Grand Rapids. The name was striking, so I ordered it. It came in a pint glass and was darker than I expected in an IPA. Dark, dark orange with an off-white head on it. Said head hung around awhile and left good, web-like traces of itself around the top of the glass. The scent was very fruity and piney. A little heavy on the grapefruit, which ended up being fairly good preparation for how this beer tastes.

At first sip, it tastes kind of how it smells: sour, pine and a bit oily - which isn't a bad thing. As soon as it has been in your mouth for half a second though, it turns into a bitter hop bomb. It is sort of akin to having some fresh cut grass in your mouth. There is a woody malt quality to it as it goes down but you have to be looking for it to see through the haze of bitterness accosting your palate.

I use the word accost but it is a mixed bag because I sometimes like a really hoppy IPA that just storms my mouth and takes no prisoners. In the case of Huma though, I feel like the bitterness has an unpleasant quality and really overstays its welcome. To me, it makes the beer taste too thick and makes me want another, less bitter IPA. On account, I would not have more than one of these. I don't find this beer unenjoyable and will definitely have it again sometime but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to and would never drink more than one. Although I should add that this takes your mouth hostage for a good fifteen minutes or more after the beer itself is long gone so you might have to drink nothing but HumaLupa.

If that was the plan, then bravo, Shorts!

From some notes I quickly jotted down.

Small one-finger head with a little lacing. Very citrusy and floral. The nose is vibrant on this one. Slightly sweet malt and a dry finish with enormous hop flavor. Balance is toward the bitter end for an IPA.

Very good stuff. I hope to be able to purchase this in bottle form soon as it would be a welcome addition to my IPA rotation.

On tap at Ashley's in Ann Arbor.

Copper orange with a floral hoppy aroma and taste. Citrus and grapefruit flavors as well. A good balance as this is not overly bitter but very smooth and drinkable. Could qualify as a session beer. A very decent IPA.

A- A bit of a hazy golden/orange color. About a finger of white, creamy head. Really good lacing and decent head retention.

S- Very floral, a bit of a citrus bite to the edge, hoppy.

T- Very hoppy, a lot of grapefruit flavor comes through, piney, with a bit of a bitter finish at the end. Not overly bitter though, pretty well balanced. Extremely delicious IPA.

M- Pretty smooth, not overly carbonated. Light-medium body.

D- Pretty drinkable. I would definitely have drank another one of these, and I'm actually surprised I didn't. A definite recommendation for any IPA lover.

Sampled on tap at Foran's in Detroit.

A - A golden ale with a huge, creamy head and lots of lacing.

S - Lots of floral hops.

T - Fruity and floral hops with loads of flavor and a nice citrusy bitterness. The hops certainly dominate this one.

M - A good consistency with a low carbonation that lets the hop flavors run wild.

D - I got this on a recommendation by the bartender and I loved it. It's just my kind of beer.

Pint on tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids.

Pours a lightly hazed copper golden orange, very nice, thick off white head forms, drops a nice ring around the glass, some real solid lace, very sticky, great retention. Smell is awesome, whole range of hop aromas, pine, floral, some grapefruit, after initial blast theres a very malty middle, caramel and biscuit, then sharp orange peel citrus acidity, very intense, beautiful stuff. Taste is similar, tons of resinous pine and grapefruit hop oils, really coating, nice malty backbone, biscuit and caramel, thick maltiness, more pine and grapefruit, floral, orange peel, very solid bitterness but perfectly balanced, insane good. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, insanely smooth and drinkable. Perfectly balanced IPA, just great stuff.

This copper/cloudy/hazy brew sits lightly in a pint glass, with a big whiteish head that fades. Nose is beautiful citrusy hops, cascade, grapefruit notes. Taste is a bit more one-noted, but solid west coast hop taste, little alcohol. Slight floral hints. Mouthfeel is good; it feels like an IPA. Drinkability is quite high for an IPA, as this isn't a hop bomb, and it's also not boring. Nice balance.

Picked up a growler on my first visit to HopCat in GR. Worth the trip and the purchase. This is a great example of why I love IPAs.

A-Golden amber/copper color, fairly transparent. Heavy head on a hard pour in to a mug fit for a bomber. Lacing from top to bottom.

S-Very citrusy and floral. Combo of hops and alcohol stings the nostrils slightly. Well balanced.

T-Again, very well balanced. The bitterness of the hops does not overpower the full flavor of this beer. The citrus cools the palette nicely.

M-Sticky and good. Flavor sticks to all areas of the tongue and mouth, leaving a nice reminder of the beer.

D-Being an IPA lover, I would drink this all day, and yesterday I did. I only wish I had another growler to put back.

Had this at HopCat in Grand Rapids. Came in a pint glass.

A: Good head, golden orange in color, mostly clear, and had good retention through the session.

S: Nice and flowery - an IPA all the way. Hops in the nose, of course, and notes of lemon and very fresh fruit.

T: All hops - maybe some malty notes in there but not much. The aftertaste lasts forever.

M: Dry, oily, thick, and perfect carbonation.

D: A totally pleasant experience. Not the greatest IPA of all time, but a good one for sure.

Reviewed from notes, served on draft at HopCat in GR, MI.

Pours bronze/orange in color with good thick, rocky head. Smell is very hoppy but smells a little more like a West Coast IPA with a bit of a caramel malt backbone. Taste good and hoppy as expected with a bit of a citrus twist to it. Leaves a bitter, but pleasant aftertaste. Mouthfeel was great. Very smooth and unexpectedly light. Overall a good beer, recommended to me by the owner of HopCat and he knows his beer!

On-tap at the HopCat in Grand Rapids.

Slighty hazy orange-tinged copper, with a one finger head that sticks around for a long time. The lase is nice and sticky as you would expect from a good IPA.

Smell; initially citrus dominates with grapefruit and a little lemon zest. After this warms a bit the hops become a little more floral and earthy, with a little pine and hay.

Taste; spicy earthy hops, with some pine, dried grass, almost tea like. Grapefruit and lemon add a nice citrus flavor, and then a little sweet caramel malts creep through for a second before being overcome by the hops.

Mouthfeel/drinkability; mouthfeel is medium bodied, and oily due to the hops. Drinkability is good. The beer is pretty drying on the palate, to the point that it may become a bit hard to drink more than one. Good thing there were so many good beers to choose from.

Poured from a growler obtained at Short's brew pub on 7/30/08, into my brand new Short's Imperial Pint Glass.

A: Very cloudy, orangish green. The bartender explained that they were selling a "shitload" of the stuff lately, so that was why it had almost a green hue to it. Small amount of head that retained well and left great sticky lace.

A: Smelled of Big grass and citrus hops. Orange, grapefruit, and "hemp". There was a very distinct sweetness as well, maybe from honey?

T: Extrordinary! The hops are enormous, again, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and honey. The sweet malts balance this very nicely.

M&D: Medium body beer, nice level of carbonation, makes for a semi-creamy mouthfeel. As for the drinkability, I had planned to drink one or two glasses out of the growler with my grilled chicken that night, but I finished it before my brother-in-law could finish grilling. I can't wait for Joe Short to bottle this one. Just an outstanding IPA. Skal.
