Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

I could smell the hops eminating from this guy as soon as I cracked the bottle cap. Beautiful golden pour with a slight bit of haze. Sweet up front with a strong floral scent and flavor that almost immediately gives way to a fairly intense bitterness, which lingers on the palette for a bit before subsiding back to the sweet. Just the right amount of carbonatino, but in the end, the bitterness of the hops is a bit much for my tastes.

Bottle that I picked up while in Michigan for KBS day. Poured into my GI tulip

A - Light amber with hints of gold. The beer is clean looking and you can actually see your hand on the other side of the glass. An aggressive pour led to a big, pillowing, two finger head that quickly disappeared into a small amount of foam that sat on top of the beer. The body appears to be a bit thin.

S - Barely smell anything on this one. What I do smell smells like grapefruit and piney hops. However, really barely any nose at all here.

T - Well, this has much more flavor that you could tell from the nose. When you first take a sip, you get grapefruit. In the middle of the beer is where the more bitter, piney hops come in. There is a slight malt sweetness that helps counterbalance the hops and prevents it from being overly bitter. The finish initially is slightly sweet and crisp before piney, bitter resin flavors come in and linger on in the finish.

MF - Light body overall but has just enough carbonation to make this crisp and refreshing. The lighter body actually goes well with the flavors and makes this one that you could drink over and over again.

O - A solid offering from Short's that I could imagine ending up in my normal IPA rotation if I could find it easily. This could easily become one of those beers that you have around the house and drink at BBQ's or on a hot summer day. The main area that is lacking is the nose as to be frank there wasn't one.

not as hoppy as the great american ipas are nowadays. pours a copper wheat color with an average whitish head. smells like stale bread, malty but not fresh. some nondiscript hops in there as well, but a weird balance. flavor is way too malty for an ipa in my opinion, completely drowning out any interesting hop flavors that might be present, instead just some bitterness at the end. i would feel better about calling this one an esb than an ipa, but thats just me. alcohol isnt readily tastable, but it feels stronger than it should. plenty of carbonation but just sort of awkward in the mouth and belly. i didnt care for this one and will not buy it again. im surprised this is reviewed so favorably on BA... its just so average and unbalanced

Semi-cloudy copper color. Off-white fluffy head that a nice film of bubbles sitting on top of the beer once it disappeared. Left some sticky lacing on the glass.

Resiny smell of piney and earthy hops. Light malt aroma with a hint of lemongrass. Nothing incredibly complex in the nose, but very appealing.

Some sweet bready malts, but they're almost completely masked by the hops. Bitter citrus with pine and, well, more bitterness. The bitterness lingers in the back of the mouth.

Pretty creamy with a nice sharp finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Nice bitter IPA. Could use a tiny bit more malt to help back up the large amount of hops. Either way, a very enjoyable brew.

I need to review these whilst drinking them so I can remember all the details....

I definitely loved the bitterness-to-citrus ratio. Meaning hoppy and bitter, and spot on as an American IPA. it is very "Michigan" - maybe from the hint of pine that comes through.... made me feel nostalgic drinking it locally though. Slightly hazy in color, and a hint of sweetness in the malt with a medium head coming from the bottle, thicker head from the tap.

Taking some of this back to Ohio for my brother-in-law. He told me to get it when the lady and I were in Michigan, and boy was I glad!
