Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Reviewed from notes on 5/27/10.

A: Poured into a snifter, Huma has a lovely golden-amber hue. There is no head after a medium pour, which is weird, because I have had this many times before and I recall a usually buoyant and healthy froth on top of the beer. I won't mark it down for that, based on previous experience. Lacing is present, but not very sticky.

S: This is exactly what I would hope for from an American IPA. Big pine, floral, and citrus hops leap into my nose, supported by a strong pale/amber malt presence.

T: Yummy. An appropriate amount of hop bitterness endures throughout each sip and into the aftertaste, while a lovely grapefruit flavor is the dominant flavor. Some pine and resin taste is also present.

M: Medium bodied for an IPA with a coating quality in the beginning and middle of each sip, which is snatched away from the palate by the drying hop quality at the end.

D: I have always found this to be an immensely drinkable IPA. The balance between sweetness from the malt and citrus flavor and the bitter, acidic bite from the hops make me want to enjoy this beer time and time again. Salud, Short's!

Took a chance on this during Short's recent dump and run tour of MA beer stores.

Very faint tropical hops with a little rotten cantalope and mushroom aroma. Lack of strong hop aroma followed through to the flavor and was left with just a substantial grassy/pithy bitterness. Good malt girth that lended some balance though. After letting warm up I can detect some phenolic weirdness in the background. Not sure if age or an oncoming infection of some sort is causing this to be bland and lifeless. Who knows, this could have been good if it was in good shape, but only worthy of sucking down fast to pad my alcoholic intake at this point. A reminder of why I hardly ever buy commercial bottled IPA's anymore.

Wow this might be better than Two Hearted, and. coming from someone with the username BellsFan THAT'S A BIG DEAL.
A: looks like an IPA aught to. Sserved without much head but presented with a deep amber color.
S: more than good hop aroma!
T: tastes like I'm drinking hops
M: actually it's thinner than expected for 140 IBUs and it's well balanced with just enough malt but not too much for an IPA
O: I ordered another; enough said

Had this at HopCat in Grand Rapids. Came in a pint glass.

A: Good head, golden orange in color, mostly clear, and had good retention through the session.

S: Nice and flowery - an IPA all the way. Hops in the nose, of course, and notes of lemon and very fresh fruit.

T: All hops - maybe some malty notes in there but not much. The aftertaste lasts forever.

M: Dry, oily, thick, and perfect carbonation.

D: A totally pleasant experience. Not the greatest IPA of all time, but a good one for sure.

An extra from shaggy9356.

A: Pours a light golden color with a foamy white head. Very hazy looking. Decent carbonation.

S: Initially I get a lot of juicy citrus, namely grapefruit. Seems to have a decent stab at balance with some sweet malts in there. This smells hella bitter.

T: Grapefruit is the predominant flavor for sure. This seems like it starts with a good amount of bready malt and almost a rye flavor to it before the raw grapefruit bitterness takes hold. Its almost like there is no bitterness and it takes time to build and linger before you just get hit with the resinous aftertaste. The rye flavor spices things up nicely. Not sweet like the smell.

M: Medium body, highly carbonated. This resinous bitterness lingers for a while, a good while. This knocks it down a bit, I can deal with aftertaste but it has to stop sometime.

O: I like my IPAs to have a little more orangey-citrus balance and some other stuff going on but this was still a solid brew. This drinks really nice until the aftertaste sets in. My favorite Short's beer to date, probably because its not based on a meal.

nice tight short off white head, light copper in color with slight haze

great fresh hop aroma, piney and resiny

good balance with all of the hop flavor, the late bitterness rapidly disappears. very piney, almost gin like

medium body

very drinkable, but the gin like profile would stop me after maybe two of these.
