Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

A: Light copper color with a quarter finger of white head with some sticky lacing.

S: The nose has that nice hop sweetness that reminds me of Alpha King. A touch of grapefruit but the nose does not really jump and and grab you though it is enjoyable.

T: The taste is nice and super balanced. The malt comes across nicely but the hops just are not there like you would want them in an IPA. More sweet than anything else. There is some bitterness in the finish. Don't get me wrong this is a good IPA but it lacked that wow factor for me.

M: A little on the thin side for me. Carbonation was nice.

D: Glad I grabber a sixer of this out in Boston. This is a solid IPA but it is the most boring IPA I have ever had because I know what they can do. They almost should not even make an IPA. That being said this is solid.

A - Poured a beautiful golden honey brown. It is extremely clear with a nice fluffy head that disappears quickly.

S - Pine, Grapefruit, with ample hop aroma.

T - Upfront palate busting bitterness. The finish is quite nice and lingers with pine and grapefruit notes.

M - Medium-bodied and refreshing

D - A very balanced IPA. The bitterness is not so astringent that the malt character is completely indistinguishable. The balance is the beer's undeniable lasting impression.

Picked up a bottle of this brew at Julio's during EBF weekend. A welcome treat, gotta love some Shorts!

Appearance: Poured into my Shorts glass, of course...the beer is a slightly cloudy, amber color. There's a good inch + worth of off-white, fluffy head atop the beer. Retention is good, lacing is impressive.

Smell: A nice burst of pine-y hops with a balancing bit of bready malt on the back end.

Taste: A nice dry sort of bitterness blended with some pine resin, followed quickly by some balancing sweetness. A very solid IPA.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, crisp feel, refreshing to drink.

Overall (Drinkability): A very tasty IPA, Short's did a good job with this one. Got some good hops, and some malt to balance makes this beer highly drinkable. Glad I got a chance to try it, I'll have to pick up some more if I ever see it on the shelves again.

12oz bottle, poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.

managed to get two bottles, thanks to @craftbeercellar.

A: poured vigorously. 1 finger white head, minimal lacing. organgish/red, much deeper than it looked during the pour.

S: whooooah, hops. smells just like cracking open a foil pack of fresh hops while homebrewing! traces of malt, but that nose of hops runs the show. not a hop bomb, though -- just a really pleasing smell.

T: all hops up front, bitterness and a bite in the middle leaves your taste buds and salivary glands on alert through the finish. mix of hops, definitely American... not quite the usual "C" hops, though. the label claims complex malt, but i just taste the malt as a supporting structure for the hops. good balance for a hoppy IPA.

M: low carbonation, would have expected a tad more. malt gives the right amount of body to make this an IPA, not a hoppy PA.

D: definitely could only handle one of these in a session. palate is left a bit blitzed (not from bitterness, though).

overall: great beer. tastes just like opening that packet of hops on brew day... mmm...

A- Golden amber with some yeast haze and a small white cap. Head retains decently and leaves a frothy cloud behind. A few streaks of lace.

S- Lots of hops. Pretty much a beastly mix of floral and citrus hops, like opening a bag for homebrew. Has a Fruity pebble feel with the bread and malt. Dank.

T- Big citrus and floral hops with a fresh hop and dank feel. Caramel malt and yeast bread.

MF- Silky smooth creamy light body. Bitterness is big but doesn't interfere with overall flavor.

DB- Very nice and probably fresh, dank bomb. Balanced when a lot of IPAs aren't nowadays.

"With the power of ale he knew he could not fail."
- Alestorm, The Huntmaster

Clear pumpkin color with a dainty white head. Thin skim retention emanating from a swarthy collar. Grandma's dollie retention.

Sniffing this beer is a highly pleasurable sensation. Mango and softy pine citrus and ruby red grapefruit roll over a fresh baked biscuit malt profile.

Big earthy tobacco and grapefruit bitter. Grapefruit up the wazoo. Little bit of acidic pineapple and fuzzy peach in there too. The bottle claims "the hearty malt bill melds with the hops to create a perfect balance." This ain't balance, this is malticide.

Rivals Smuttynose Finest Kind for most grapefruity IPA I've had.

A: Poured a nice pale gold with a decent one finger fluffy white head.

S: Lots of pine and resin hop notes here. Nothing "fruity" here if that's what you are looking for but there is a very slight sweetness. Strong biscuit and slight caramel malt backbone.

T: Bitter astringent hops first and foremost. This is followed by a slight raw grain taste. I hate to say this, but there was some weird taste that I couldn't really put my finger on...I'm not sure if it was some weird interaction with the pizza I was eating but I got a funky somewhat fecal taste briefly. Then it finished very astringently, like crushed aspirin.

M: Creamy body with a nice medium carbonation. Finishes super dry though due to the strong astringent nature.

O: I can't really make out what is written on the label, I'm assuming its a date, but considering this just showed up in MA like two weeks back I'd hope its not that old. Either way, pretty decent nose on this one but I really didn't enjoy the taste or drying finish.

Pours a big fluffy 1+ finger head that fades semis slowly, with a bit of lacing, over super clear toasty amber orange color.

Nose has plenty of nice hops, lots of citrus, bit of tropical fruit, light fresh hop resin, grapefruit, pineapple, guava, lots of fresh tropical fruits. Underneath is the slightest hint of malts.

Taste starts a bit creamy actually, a light malty base starts to come through, bringing a slight sweetness, but that is quickly cut down by the heavy hops, a strong bitterness starts to come through, lots of fresh musty hop resins, some tropical fruits, lots of citrus, light orange rind, hop oils, it even starts to get a little astringent, and the malty base has disappeared really quickly, leaving the hops alittle flat, almost like drinking hop water. The malts were begging to come though first, but then were quickly drowned by the hops and left for dead somewhere else. The bitterness lingerers practically forever, leaving a slight astringent taste, as well as some pine, citrus, and orange zest.

Mouth is a bit lighter bodied with good carbonation.

Drink is OK, it gets pretty bitter and a bit astringent, but drier finish, although a flat finish with no malts to back it up.

Clear amber orange with a pure white firm and thick head.

Nose is perfumed pineapple with a floral character and a light lemon maple character.

Mouthfeel is rich and with a creamy character but nice feeling and hop heavy bitter in the balance. (Which I view as a positive characteristic).

Flavors are big bold assertive bitter pine with some underlying hints of cooked honey and green herbs and spices.

Finish is all bitter pine and pine resin. A luscious feeling and tasting beer with lots of nice character.

12 ounce bottle at March tasting in Santa Cruz. Pours dark gold with a lasting white head. Aroma is metallic, specifically ferrous, with some spicy piney hops. Astringent bitter taste, spicy herbal hops with a touch of mint, low on the citrus. Mild maltiness but the hops don't really shine much either. There's also a leathery tobacco-ish note. Doesn't come together quite right. May be a touch 'chronologically advanced.'

Thanks to Another6Pack for hooking me up with this one! 12 oz bottle with something printed on the label that I can't make out, might be a freshness date. Poured into my goblet.

Appearance: Slightly hazy orange golden with a nice rocky white head that did not settle quickly. Leaves nice looking lacing.

Smell: Dank pine and citrus (grapefruit) that mask a toasted malt profile.

Taste: Wow that is a bitter IPA. The hops take front and center here. I actually would like a little more maltiness to back this one up. The pine/grassy hops totally are out of balance. If you were to balance this one out, it would be like any other beer, and balance is not what they were going for here. So I cannot fault the brewers at all.

Mouthfeel: A silky mouthfeel with carbonation on the higher side. The flavor coats the mouth thoroughly.

Drinkability: This is one I would like to have again, but I could only have one in a session because of the intense bitterness.

Recieved this in a trade as an extra from SHOGOWANDA (forgive me if the name is incorrect)

Yummy!!!

pours a nice burnt orange color with a fluffy white head that fades quickly. Smell is strong of floral hops and bitterness hits the nose hard. The taste is very smooth and bitter at the finish. You get a nice hit of the floral hops mixed in. Mouthfeel is very light and smooth.

Very drinkable and an easy IPA to drink. Well done IPA from a brewery I never knew of.

Super thanks to gnemesis for the amazing box of Short's he sent my way!!!

a - poured the 12oz'er into my capt lawrence tasting tulip. classic transparent honey copper with a white foamy bubbly head that hung around for a while.

s - sweetened hops. the malts really chill out the hops on this and hop profile is relatively tame. i actually dig this over the in your face knock you down hopping. citirically sweet.

t - what wasn't there hopwise in the nose is certainly in the flavor. really nice. hoppy flavor dominates at first, ends with a soft piney bitterness. earthy grapefruit with a gentle sweetening in the middle. quite good and quite balanced.

m/d - medium bodied with a cooling oh so subtle bitter aftertaste. kind of filling. this is a really nice ipa. i'd put it against any of the well known and talked about ipas out there.

A- pours a pale slight amber with big head and a good amount of lacing.

S- nice and hoppy. tart sweetness, grapefruit and other citrus up in there.

T- medium bitterness up front that had a nice citrus taste. sweetness is twisted through each sip right before a medium piney finish

M- i have very little carbonation in this one. goes down very smooth. relatively light feeling id say

D- very drinkably. nicely balanced bitterness and sweetness thats easy to drink.

Glad this brewery finally made it to MA

Pours a clear amber/gold with a moderate white head. Big piney, earthy, citrusy hop aroma. Flavor follows the aroma with a sweet toffee malt body with a pleasant grassy/citrusy hop bite. Very well balanced and bitter piney finish. Very slight diacytel flavor in the finish as well. Well carbonated with a slightly sticky finish. Enjoyable IPA.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A - orangey brown color with a bit of opaqueness. tiny head that is quickly to the edge of the glass where it lingers.

S - nice floral hoppy smell, citrus, vanilla.

T - nice hoppy dry taste . balances well with the malt.

M - sticks around for the perfect amount of time keeping that same balance.

D - very nice beer got two of these as shorts was being distributed for a very brief period of time. wish i picked up a few more.

Mid-range color for an IPA, and a decent head. The aroma is very much a forest, with a ton of grass and pine. The taste is very similar, as the grass really takes over and the carbonation gives it a very refreshing mouthfeel. This is a great IPA, and is very drinkable and flavorful. As it warmed, it began to show more fruit as well.

Appearance: Relatively clear gold with some copper leanings. Head is rocky and bright-white and dwindles to a sticky lacing in short order.

Smell: Tons of hops. I'm getting a bunch of orange rind mixed with some pineapple and pine. It hits every range I thought hops could hit without being too crazy. A touch of malt sweetness lingers in the back, but the nose is dominated by the hops.

Taste: Similar to the nose. Lots of citrus hits the tongue and quickly gives way to a lingering pine flavor. The thing I thought of as pineapple on the nose is long gone. Some sweetness from the malts drops some caramel notes, perhaps something biscuity as well, and quickly departs.

Mouthfeel: A little heavier than I was expecting. It almost drinks DIPA heavy, but lacks the overtly syrupy quality. Carbonation is on the low side and it finishes a little dry.

Drinkability: I could probably drink a few of these before my tastebuds begged me to switch it up. Goes down easy due to low carbonation.

Overall: I'm lucky to have found a 12-pack of this while it was in MA for EBF weekend. It's an amazing take on the American IPA and brings the midwest brewers in to serious IPA contention. This might be one of the better IPA's I've had in recent history.

Theme Park in my mouth? dont mind if I do!

Pours a pretty foamy head of two fingers , a slightly hazy orange amber color.

Smell of orange rinds, a light pale malt aroma mixed with pine and grapefruit.

Taste got me right off the bat with its well rounded flavor profile. Not too bitter, not too sweet, this one is done just right and very good. A bit of peach flavor from the hops as well which is something I can dig. Lots of pine mixing with grapefruit and citrus. Predominantly piney in the bittering profile, but not overdone and it is easy to taste all of the different hops in here. Caramel is still in the background and nice and smooth.

This is a great American IPA that i would get regularly if available in my region.

12 fl oz brown bottle; served in a tumbler.

Full copper in color beneath a dense, frothy, bright white head that clings to the tumbler with an unwillingness to recede. Cascading walls of lacing with good strength.

Fresh, bright pine and spruce aromas with just a touch of oily, hop resin. Peach, pear, and green apple tart fruit aromas.

Stiff, pine and spruce hop flavors from the onset that carry the the majority of the taste through the aftertaste. For an IPA, rather dry; not much in terms of the typical resin-filled flavors and mouthfeel. The citrus fruit present in the aromatics are nearly absent in the taste. Toasted biscuity malt base that holds its own against the pine-filled hops onslaught.

Medium bodied; stiff, dry, and a touch filmy.

In all honesty, a bit one-dimensional in terms of the hop flavor profile. Good, but it fell a bit short of its reputation.

Took a chance on this during Short's recent dump and run tour of MA beer stores.

Very faint tropical hops with a little rotten cantalope and mushroom aroma. Lack of strong hop aroma followed through to the flavor and was left with just a substantial grassy/pithy bitterness. Good malt girth that lended some balance though. After letting warm up I can detect some phenolic weirdness in the background. Not sure if age or an oncoming infection of some sort is causing this to be bland and lifeless. Who knows, this could have been good if it was in good shape, but only worthy of sucking down fast to pad my alcoholic intake at this point. A reminder of why I hardly ever buy commercial bottled IPA's anymore.

S: Aromas of citrus and floral burst to the nose.

T: Bitter and inviting floral hops with slightly citrus background.

D: Very smooth and drinkable, great with some aged sharp cheddar and wheat crackers.

Short's in MA! Short's in MA!

A golden honey color poured into a pint glass - this beer has a nice lumpy head that sticks around for a bit (and to the glass).

Big aroma, I could smell this before I...intentionally smelled it. Reminded me of NN. Big fruity hops and pine. A sip unleashes crisp and bitter aggressive hops with very little obvious malt but somehow it's there to tame the front of the sip. Dry resiny earth/pine finish. Perhaps I'll have another taste.

This is a lot of hops. I'm not sure I was ready for it. But after a few sips I can say it was a great brew and would compliment a meal extraordinarily.

Yes MICHIGAN does kick arse on all brews that are hoppy. Short's brew is another awesome beer from Michigan where the best beers are brewed in the WORLD. This IPA is awesome not as good as Hopslam but pretty close. Taste like if I was licking the floors of heaven. One of the best IPAs I have tasted. Delicious!
