Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Updated 8/23/13

Another in the series of reviews of Michigan beers obtained on my recent visit to the state in June. I bought two bottles of this one and saved the second bottle for later in the summer.

Poured into a tulip glass from the 12 oz. bottle. Second one was into an Alchemist shaker pint.

a: Yummy translucent light amber. Finger wide head melted to an even surface foam and clingy ring.

s: Immediately on pouring, orange/tangerine notes even without sniffing close. Wow. The best-smelling IPA I've had yet. Second one was not nearly as strong, perhaps because the hops had been muted by eight weeks of aging.

t: Strong citrus hop bitterness quickly asserted itself and dominated. Powerful but too citrusy-bitter for my taste. Left a long lingering bitter aftertaste similar to and perhaps even stronger than unsweetened grapefruit juice. Second one was only moderate strength and the citrus was not nearly as evident.

m: Mouth-puckering bitterness overshadowed everything on the first occasion. Two months later, it was much easier drinking. Not what was intended perhaps, but definitely a better experience. OTOH I have had lots of different IPAs since my first Huma, and have gotten far more used to and even enamored of hop bombs than I was in June.

o: The second go-round was a much better experience than the first, a medium strength and more balanced bitterness which went well with my grilled burger and potato salad.

Thanks to ROBSTARR for sending this one. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a CCB pint glass.

A: Nice gold, nearly completely clear. One finger's worth of white head that fades to foam fairly quickly, and a good bit of small bubble visible carbonation.

S: Resin, citrus, pine and some tropical fruit hops on top of a sweet bready malt presence. Not a huge nose, but nice.

T: Resinous pine, grapefruit peel and grassy hops. There is a fairly significant malt backbone here for an IPA as well and, while it adds some sweetness to the flavors without adding much caramelization, it completely folds to the significant hop bitterness in overall impression. The hop bitterness lingers for a few beats after the swallow but is gone fairly quickly.

M: Average body for an IPA with good carbonation. Alcohol presence moderate for ABV.

O: A solid IPA with not a lot to complain about. The hop profile isn't my personal preference, which prevents me from ranking this among the upper echelon of IPAs around...the bitterness is pretty high while the hop flavors are between muddled to absent. But for a bitter-bomb of an IPA it's actually quite enjoyable. If this were available around here it would be in regular rotation in the fridge, but not a staple. Glad I got to try it.

Appearance: a orange with yellowish hues. pretty hazy. a small white head that fades fairly slowly

Smell: strong grapefruit bitterness. fairly strong sweet and bitter contrast

Taste: again with the strong grapefruit. quite bitter, but fairly juicy.

Mouthfeel: very bitter and sticky. the juiciness falls away

Overall: a good juicy hop ipa. not the most refreshing ipa but has a good lasting taste

Appearance: Huma pours an amber color with two fingers of white head. Keeps light retention.

Smell: The strong hop content brings a citrus smell, with grapefruit perhaps standing out. There’s also a light floral and earthy presence there.

Taste: The taste brings a full, big hop presence. The hops really stand out. Grapefruit, maybe some raisin, and a lot of soapy, crisp bitterness are the key notes here. There’s a good balance of light caramel malts in the background, but the crisp, fresh, bitter, and clean hops are what really stand out. And boy, do they ever.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is relatively high, but not too much so. The beer has a full, but not thick, feel.

Overall: This was an excellent, even top-notch, example of an American IPA. One of the best I’ve had, in fact. For the hop fan, this is gonna be a great choice anytime.

This is a beer for people who love the bitter bite of hops. There's a bit of malt and sweetness down low, but it can't compete with the bitterness.

If you like the hops to dominate your beer experience, and you're an IPA fan, I recommend this. It's one of my favorite beers for summer. It's on my exceptional beer list.

I'd go again.
