Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Pours very cloudy bright orange color with a massive 3 finger thick foamy head that looked like a cloud and faded slowly and left excellent sticky lacing and rings as it went down; a perfect looking IPA out of the bottle. There was a ton of sediment at the bottom of each bottle.

Smells of big hops up front, with floral hops, citrus hops, piney hops, pine cones, grapefruit, tangerine, caramel, sweet malt, grains and a sugary sweetness like brown sugar or candy like Fun Dip. Wow, the hops smell fresh picked like wet hops, and the sweet malts add nice balance.

Tastes very hoppy up front, and then the grains slide in for balance; flavors include floral hops, flowers, citrus hops, piney hops, pine cones, grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, lemon, herbs, tea leaf, caramel, sweet malt, toasted grains, yeast and a very tasty sugary sweetness like brown sugar or Fruit Loops cereal; the grains and sweet malt tame the fresh hop oily flavor and make for a very smooth beer.

Mouthfeel is crisp, oily slick on the tongue, with high fizzy carbonation, a medium body and a sweet grainy finish that's slightly bitter like a grapefruit, and then it fades dry and clean.

A great beer from start to finish, this was an extremely pleasant surprise and a highly drinkable session beer that I will definitely seek out again. I am very impressed by Short's Brewing so far as the Ale La Reverend IPA was also an excellent beer. This beer was so good that 1 did not do the trick; I was so impressed that I drank 3 in a row. A damn good beer!

Beer poured from bottle into Pint shaped glass

A - Body of the beer is a nice dark golden color; translucent; very, very active with bubbles; fantastic thick and solid white two finger rocky colored head formed; dissipated evenly and slowly and left behind a nice layer of sticky lacing on the glass

S - Nice citrus and pine hop blast to the nose; leaves a little bit of malt in the back of the smell, but my nose is still trying to get over the hop notes that hit it; some roasted and chocolaty malt scents; great scents

T - Wow! Hop bitterness all-around; I didn't even put the beer down and my mouth is screaming for something sweet; some nut - hazelnut is mixed in there; I also can't help but notice a slight taste of roasted malt or chocolate on the tongue and sides of the mouth

M - Retro-olfaction radiates bitter aftertaste and bitter mucus; frothy but very solid and well-built; nut flavors are also in the aftertaste

D - I really, really liked this beer; if you're a fan of IPA's, there is no reason why this isn't in your collection; great scents and a smooth, but harsh, hop flavor; packed with citrus pine notes that make your mouth crave for more hop flavored beer

I love IPA's and this one is truly among the best I have ever tried. The entire experience consuming this wonderful IPA fulfilled all of my expectations. I'm sorry I have not sampled it before now.
This IPA has a crisp and clean mouth feel enhanced by the flowery notes of the hops. The aromatics from the unique hops used in this IPA satisfy from start to finish as the brew travels across your pallet. Huma-Lupa-Licious hits the IPA sweet spot with a perfect malt canvas to facilitate a wonderful hoppy experience.
This brew is an instant favorite for me to revisit frequently. Also, another Michigan quality brew.

12oz bottle, scooped 2 sixers last weekend in ann arbor.

love short's brew from my very limited exposure...enjoyed having this one on tap a few times over the weekend

appearance: poured into my tyranena pint, bright copper-amber body, a nice beige bubbly lace

smell: very nice aroma and very hoppy - fresh clean citrus, bright pine, touches of honey

taste: a very good IPA - would be a regular in my fridge if i could just get my hands on it. very sharp citrus hop stinger, pungent and very distinct grapefruit, bitter orange peel, sappy pine. This is a very high-end IPA from Short's

mouthfeel: a tongue twister, highly bitter

drinkability: nice - but your tongue is wrecked

Appearance is golden yellow that pours a thin head. Slight orange hues.

Smells of grapefruit, orange, and lemon zest.

Oh my hops! Definite grapefruit and orange zest, wonderfully hoppy.

Mouthfeel is hop bitterness with slight citrus and it is wonderful.

Overall one of my favorite IPAs

A: Aggressive pour yields 2/3 finger of off-white head with great retention. Cloudy golden-copper liquid is slightly less than luminous. Good lookin'
S: Bright citrus, tropical fruit: guava, pineapple. Man candy, very nice. Slightly dank, mostly fruity, slight alcohol.
T: Bitter start with some nice caramel malt. Very well done AIPA. Very biter, slight bread.
M: Bitter! Some astringent green banana, some grapefruit peel. Nailed it! Almost a DIPA
D: Very good. I'd love another and I'll make it a regular. Glad it's year round.

Pours nice with a good cream white tint to the head. Mostly transparent and amber in color. A scattered sediment settlement at the bottom of the bottle (say that three times fast) is easy to pull up with a few shakes. Dashing down quickly the sediment cloud reaches three quarters of the way down the glass and floats there. Aside from the last quarter, the glass is now asemi-transparent amber cloud with only shadowed objects refracting through. A pretty bowl of lacing graphs down the sides of the glass.

Smells strong like hops and spice. Reaches the upper nasal cavities easily.

Taste has that metallic ting to it. A lasting after taste ripe with hoppy flavor. A very good blend of aroma and tastes that get better with warmth.

The feel is nice enough. not much of a burn for the spice.

Very drinkable. A great Northern Michigan IPA!

Cheers,
Jordan.

Pint on tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids.

Pours a lightly hazed copper golden orange, very nice, thick off white head forms, drops a nice ring around the glass, some real solid lace, very sticky, great retention. Smell is awesome, whole range of hop aromas, pine, floral, some grapefruit, after initial blast theres a very malty middle, caramel and biscuit, then sharp orange peel citrus acidity, very intense, beautiful stuff. Taste is similar, tons of resinous pine and grapefruit hop oils, really coating, nice malty backbone, biscuit and caramel, thick maltiness, more pine and grapefruit, floral, orange peel, very solid bitterness but perfectly balanced, insane good. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, insanely smooth and drinkable. Perfectly balanced IPA, just great stuff.

Probably may favorite India pale ale. It is very well balanced with a great hoppy taste that complements many types of dinners. A lot of IPAs taste the same to me, but this one tends to stand out and the creative name probably helps. I tend to prefer this in the summer even over fruiter and lighter beers.

Reviewed from notes on 5/27/10.

A: Poured into a snifter, Huma has a lovely golden-amber hue. There is no head after a medium pour, which is weird, because I have had this many times before and I recall a usually buoyant and healthy froth on top of the beer. I won't mark it down for that, based on previous experience. Lacing is present, but not very sticky.

S: This is exactly what I would hope for from an American IPA. Big pine, floral, and citrus hops leap into my nose, supported by a strong pale/amber malt presence.

T: Yummy. An appropriate amount of hop bitterness endures throughout each sip and into the aftertaste, while a lovely grapefruit flavor is the dominant flavor. Some pine and resin taste is also present.

M: Medium bodied for an IPA with a coating quality in the beginning and middle of each sip, which is snatched away from the palate by the drying hop quality at the end.

D: I have always found this to be an immensely drinkable IPA. The balance between sweetness from the malt and citrus flavor and the bitter, acidic bite from the hops make me want to enjoy this beer time and time again. Salud, Short's!

Sampled on 5-12-09
Bottled in March 2009

Pours a hazy golden orange, with a pleasant white head that leaves a thick layer of lacing.

Smell is super fruity, the flowery hops are so strong it could be perfume. Unbelievably good.

Taste is strong, earthy hops, with just the right amount of sweet malt to back it up. The finish is very bitter and dry, with lots of sweet, English style hops.

Mouthfeel is great, very thick, which adds to the flavors, but made lighter by the nice carbonation.

Drinkability is very good, If your in the mood for something bitter.

Overall, I've had this before on tap, and it was never this good. An outstanding beer.

Theme Park in my mouth? dont mind if I do!

Pours a pretty foamy head of two fingers , a slightly hazy orange amber color.

Smell of orange rinds, a light pale malt aroma mixed with pine and grapefruit.

Taste got me right off the bat with its well rounded flavor profile. Not too bitter, not too sweet, this one is done just right and very good. A bit of peach flavor from the hops as well which is something I can dig. Lots of pine mixing with grapefruit and citrus. Predominantly piney in the bittering profile, but not overdone and it is easy to taste all of the different hops in here. Caramel is still in the background and nice and smooth.

This is a great American IPA that i would get regularly if available in my region.

Huge Thanks to CrazyMacHarris99 for sending this want my way.

A: Pours lighter than I thought it would. A nice darker shade of yellow / lighter shade of orange. The head was nice and tall and a nice vibrant white color. Okay retention with lots of leggy lace all the way down the glass.

S: Release the hops! Pop the cap on this one and pure hop juice rushes from the bottle. Very grassy herbal hops mostly but there is a touch of citrus juice as well.

T: Taste is very floral with very strong fresh cut grass notes. Bitter grapefruit rind and some sweet caramel malt. The malt attempts to provide balance in this one, but it really has no chance against these hops. It really is a hop theme park in your mouth.

M: Actually drinks sort of light, zippy carbonation, with a real clinging bitterness.

D: Crazy good. It drinks fairly light, and the taste makes you take gulp after gulp. One I could drink six of no problem. One of the better beers I have had in awhile.

Short's has been hit or miss for me. They are always pushing the envelope which I love. This beer is a hit no doubt. Not just a hit, but a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth kind of hit.

This is goood!

12 oz bottle into pint glass:

A: Not sure if there's anything to criticize about the looks. Hazy golden-orange body with a huge off-white, creamy, sticky head, good lacing and great cap.

S: Highly complex. Orange peel and nuts, spices, light yeast, and butter right up front. Chocolate malts are also present. Amazingly rounded.

T: Peppery and citrusy, with some good floral hops coming through along with some earthy tones. Sweet chocolate is great as well.

M: Wonderfully creamy, lightly carbonated.

D: This is a perfect IPA. These are hops done right without using too many and getting into imperial territory. It's not the hoppiest, but is rather quite balanced. If may have to go to Michigan just to have some more.

S: Hints of citrus, pine, and hops.

T: Bitter start that transitions into a sharp hopped body with hints of grapefruit/citrus zest, and floral/earth.

M: Dry from start to finish.

O: This beer is a Short's top 5. Hop heavy, yet easy to drink. A solid go to beer.

Pours a dark orangish copper with a nice off white head that fades after a few sips. The smell is very powerful, the hop aroma is ridiculous, really potent and fresh. Their are some sweet smells, citrus and pine, a great aroma. This one has big flavor, the hops and sweetness hit up front, with a nice complex finish, and a bitter aftertaste. This one has a medium mouthfeel, like you are chewing on some hops. The beer is packed with flavor, fresh hop flavor, with a hard malt backbone. This one is a great beer for hop lovers, a beer I will revisit again and again.

As a side note, I bought this in bottles to take home, and the on tap beer out ranked the bottles by far.

From some notes I quickly jotted down.

Small one-finger head with a little lacing. Very citrusy and floral. The nose is vibrant on this one. Slightly sweet malt and a dry finish with enormous hop flavor. Balance is toward the bitter end for an IPA.

Very good stuff. I hope to be able to purchase this in bottle form soon as it would be a welcome addition to my IPA rotation.

A - slightly hazy (from bottle conditioning) copper color with a nice head and good retention, nice lacing as it drains

S - strong American hop aroma characterized by citrus and pine like scents, malt is noticed; yeast fruitiness blends well with hop aromas

T - rich malt and hop flavor profile from start to finish; moderately strong hop finish balances out the caramel flavors in the malt; yeast fruitiness present, but subdued compared to the hops and malt

M - medium to full body, moderate-to-high carbonation

D - This is quite an outstanding American IPA. It delivers all the great factors of the style in the right proportions that hit the spot - very enjoyable and highly drinkable.

Poured from a growler obtained at Short's brew pub on 7/30/08, into my brand new Short's Imperial Pint Glass.

A: Very cloudy, orangish green. The bartender explained that they were selling a "shitload" of the stuff lately, so that was why it had almost a green hue to it. Small amount of head that retained well and left great sticky lace.

A: Smelled of Big grass and citrus hops. Orange, grapefruit, and "hemp". There was a very distinct sweetness as well, maybe from honey?

T: Extrordinary! The hops are enormous, again, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and honey. The sweet malts balance this very nicely.

M&D: Medium body beer, nice level of carbonation, makes for a semi-creamy mouthfeel. As for the drinkability, I had planned to drink one or two glasses out of the growler with my grilled chicken that night, but I finished it before my brother-in-law could finish grilling. I can't wait for Joe Short to bottle this one. Just an outstanding IPA. Skal.

Wow, wow, wow. What an unbelievable beer! This maybe my favorite IPA ever! This is simply great, especially as its not an imperial/double IPA. It has a deeper golden shade with some red and orange tones. Slightly hazy appearance, but pretty clean and crisp. I got a 2 finger that settled to a nice lace that stayed throughout the drink. Aromas of citrus, pineapple and grapefruit mostly, but I detect some blood orange and mango to. Holy hops! I get that fresh piney and deeper grass and herb overtones that give way to subtle breads malts in the background. The first sip gives way to a sharp explosion of hops and citrus, bitterness, pine, more hops, a more refined 'aged' hop flavor (maybe just the blend of hops they use created this taste for me), a subtle bitter sweetness balanced with the hops and citrus. I get some sweet maltiness of light toasted malts near the end, but a nice aftertaste of hops comes back to end the drink. Very very nice in my humble opinion. Hop-forward, similar to some of the Stone brews, very unique though, stands by itself as one of the best IPA's on the market. Definatly one of short's best brews. An absolute legend!

Cheers!!!!

Pours a lovely, slightly orange amber with a densely packed white head that sticks around forever and leaves super sticky lacing. The aroma is all I could ask for in an IPA. Citrus grapefruit punch with caramel malt sweetness holding it up. My parents brought this to me from Michigan and it must be a pretty fresh bottle, because the smell filled the room when I popped the cap. The flavor differs slightly from the aroma in that I pick up a lot more pine than in the nose. Don't get me wrong, it is still a grapefruit party in my mouth, but pine is busting a move on my tongue as well. It definitely has a very complex hop flavor and I am also picking up some herbal notes as well as orange and lemon. Bitterness is pretty strong, but I still find that the malt balances it quite well. The malt is very nice with some toffee notes that do not overpower the pale malt base. Yum. The mouthfeel is medium with a nice dry finish and carbonation that is right on the money. This is a very drinkable IPA, and I am looking forward to my next trip to MI so I can have it on tap again. It is quite depressing that Short's came onto the scene about the time I moved away from Northwest Michigan. I highly recommend this beer.
