American IPA |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Bottle courtesy of Stephen. Thanks for the opportunity!

Into a tulip pours a cloudy yellowy with orange highlights when backlit. Retention is minimal leaving a razor thin collar.

Caramel, ginger, and lemon rind on the nose. This smells like liquified Indian food. While I happen to love indian food, the ginger and spices on the nose are slightly odd here.

Malts, bitter lemon rind and cilantro? Ginger rides hard here as well. Certainly an odd beer that conjures up vivid memories up Indian buffets gone-by.

For years my sister and wife have partaken in all the bounty and goodness that the Indian buffet has to offer. This beer is the odd incantation of these tastes and memories. Ill just drink it and ponder.

(Biggups to the Rhettroactive for this one!)

A: a sturdy clean white head splays out across the deep amber body. Thick lacing coats the edge of the glass, and the retention is O's firm that the silky smooth surface remains in place for the full experience. Expectations of superb carbonation and luxurious makes follow.

S: great interplay of deep malt and light, fresh hops from the get-go. The former offers up toast biscuity notes alongside thicker bready notes, while the latter provide super herbaceous notes of grass, pine, and layers of citrus to finish. Although the nose is awash with character, it remains modest in it's approach, and lulls you in gently rather than the bellowing commands so frequently found in other examples of this style.

T: Again, excellent collaboration between malt and hops result in a harmonious balancen of an almost Siamese nature. The malts express on the palate much of that which is displayed on the nose. However, the hops impart a waxy bitterness that goes beyond the usual resin resemblance to become akin to that found in green tea or - dare I say it - ear wax. Although this maybe a fetish for some, and despite the hop's commendable citric notes, this is not a flavor profile for my personal taste.

M: The carbonation certainly satisfies expectations set by its appearance: smooth, functional, well-integrated bubbles carry the bulk of this brew with elegant ease. The malts provide a pleasing weightiness to the body, and the relentless head imparts a velvety kiss upon its uptake.

O: I really want to sing this brew's praises - it ticks so many boxes, and yet the fact it falls almost flat on it's face when it comes to the most defining feature of an IPA - the hops - robs me of that opportunity. If only the Short's brewmasters had considered a more nuanced hop profile that didn't remind me of the "I'll eat anything" bets I made with my friends as a 7 year old, I'd be right back out there looking to scoop up every bottle I could find. Of course, if ear wax is your thing, then I say trade whatever you've got (baseball cards and all) to get your sticky little hands on bottle of this stuff.
