Notes & Commercial Description:

Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

12oz bottle poured into SA perfect pint glass.
~$12/6-pack at Whole Foods in DC
Bottled 5/16/11

A: Pours a deep, almost burnt colored amber. Frothy head which quickly dissipates.
S: Almost like a sweet nectar aroma.
T: I think I may be eating hop cones. This is serious stuff and for a single IPA it's pretty remarkable what they've been able to do with the taste.
M: Thick.
D: I like this. I've heard a lot about this beer and I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to have a few. While it's not my favorite IPA, I think that it is a stand-up beer.

"A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth" - Label
12oz bottle is poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. The beer pours a somewhat hazy golden yellow with an orange hue. A large head erupts after the initial pour and without much haste dissipates. After the head retracts, a moderate amount of lacing is left in its wake which dries and stays on the glass for the duration of my beers existence.

The nose is quite pleasant, consisting of an array of hop varietals. Piney, bitter notes blend with tropical fruits, citrus and musty earthy notes.

The taste seems a bit more one sided as far as the hops are concerned. The bitterness seems to override any fruit or citrus notes. The saving grace of this beer is the well rounded malt bill that helps keep the hops balanced. The hops seems to be a little muted in the taste leading me to think this isn't as fresh as I would like it to be.

It is well carbonated and medium bodied. The finish is quite bitter and very dry and leaves me wanting more which I suppose is a good thing. The freshness thing does urk me. I really wish breweries would date, at the very least, their IPA's...

Solid. I think I had an older bottle though.
