Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: arizcards on 06-13-2004

Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

"A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth" - Label
12oz bottle is poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. The beer pours a somewhat hazy golden yellow with an orange hue. A large head erupts after the initial pour and without much haste dissipates. After the head retracts, a moderate amount of lacing is left in its wake which dries and stays on the glass for the duration of my beers existence.

The nose is quite pleasant, consisting of an array of hop varietals. Piney, bitter notes blend with tropical fruits, citrus and musty earthy notes.

The taste seems a bit more one sided as far as the hops are concerned. The bitterness seems to override any fruit or citrus notes. The saving grace of this beer is the well rounded malt bill that helps keep the hops balanced. The hops seems to be a little muted in the taste leading me to think this isn't as fresh as I would like it to be.

It is well carbonated and medium bodied. The finish is quite bitter and very dry and leaves me wanting more which I suppose is a good thing. The freshness thing does urk me. I really wish breweries would date, at the very least, their IPA's...

Thanks to JordanEllwanger for this one

Poured into my pint glass from a 12floz bottle

Pours a pretty dark copper like color with a slightly off-white three inch frothy head. Good head retention that leaves slight lacing on the sides of my glass.

Smell is of oranges, tangerines, lemons, floral type hops, grass and very earth like, herbal. Very interesting and something that I cant wait to anticipate to taste.

Bitterness upfront that can catch you a little off guard if you are new to hops. Smooths out a little with very mild sweet malts, but the hops just dominate on this. Be prepared for bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation and a dry bitter finish.

Pretty good brew but there is plenty other IPA's out on the market that are better then this.

Glad this brewery finally made it to MA

Pours a clear amber/gold with a moderate white head. Big piney, earthy, citrusy hop aroma. Flavor follows the aroma with a sweet toffee malt body with a pleasant grassy/citrusy hop bite. Very well balanced and bitter piney finish. Very slight diacytel flavor in the finish as well. Well carbonated with a slightly sticky finish. Enjoyable IPA.

Somewhat darker side of a pale orange. Low carbonation though some decent lacing going on. Ok aroma-some sweet malt and a trace of hops. I would expect more but thats ok. Sweet malt against a decent backround of hop bitterness. Bitterness almost becomes astringent but the heavy malt keeps it in line. Mild toffee/toasted flavors. Good solid body. Very drinkable-comes off as a much bigger beer. Quite enjoyable.

Big thanks to michiganbrewer for coming through with this beer on a trade!

Hazy, medium orange color fills the cup. A two finger head perched atop the beverage but receded down thin. Retention is there and some lacing sticks behind. The nose showcases hops coming through in a big way - tobacco, earthy, and floral. Toasted malts lie in wait, springing up now and again to remind you this isn't all about hops. More malty sweetness presents itself as the beer warms. First sips yield a strong earthy/herbally hop presence and the tobacco from the nose seems to have won the flavor battle on the palette. For the most part, the malt is clean but a wonderbread-like toastiness isn't afraid to stand up. Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation.

"A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth" says the bottle. I'm not sure I agree with the "complex...in your mouth". Hops seem overly focused on a tobacco/earthy character but I'd expect more variety. That said, it has a lasting bitterness which is at the right level for the style. Appearance could be improved, too.

Bottle on May 8th, 2011 into tulip plastic glass.

Appearance: 4
Clear golden amber body with 1 inch white head that fades quickly into thin covering. Has good lacing.

Smell: 3.5
Notes of toffee malt and spicy, pine resin. Nice aroma, but not overly distinct.

Taste: 4
Main piney, resin flavors of hops predominate with good bitterness. Hint of marijuana stickiness to it, in a good way. Good presence of bready, toffee malt that becomes more notable as the beer warms. Overall, a well balance beer, but very

Mouthfeel: 3.5
Slightly thinner mouthfeel, with mild astringency from hops. A pleasant mild creaminess too.

Overall: 4
A solid IPA with a strong piney hop presences that is quite enjoyable. However, despite being an above average offering, it’s probably not something I’d really go out of my way to seek again. Still, worth trying if you can. Recommend if fresh.

Got this from Nickwin who was a very good trader

A: Slightly cloudy and the color of caramel in a twix bar. It had a nice half inch thick head with big bubbles solid lacing.

S: Very nice citrus aroma with a mild amount of sweetness.

T: Very piney tasting. Good sweetness but I was definitely surprised by the amount of pine notes.

M: The pines do do linger quite a bit leaving a bitter feel. It does have some creaminess with a note that is a bit harsh.

D: I could have a few of these for sure but something but something about it makes it not my favorite

thanks to heliosphann for this extra! 12oz bottle, no freshness info.

A- Golden with a hint of orange, giving it that glowing appearance, slightly hazy.

S- beautiful citrus- mango, grapefruit. Reminds me a bit of Blind Pig.

T- I generally like as little sweetness in my IPA's as possible, but this one is just really lacking in that category. It's like bitter hops are coming through, with some flavor of their own, like bitter citrus oil, but there's hardly any sweetness in the body to be detected, and for me that means it's very low. Kind of a harsh hoppiness to it overall.

M- very dry. Too dry. Body isn't bad in terms of weight, but there's just no malt flavor in there. Almost the exact opposite of what I would expect from a brewery on that side of the country.

Poured out of the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Fairly recent pick up as well.

Appearance out of the bottle on the pour is really odd, it almost looks gray! However after a simple white foamy small one finger head is made, the body color reveals what I can only describe is a cloudy rust. Looks a little lifeless, but I'll give it points for a unique color. Minimal lacing also.

Muted light airy and somewhat sweet hop on the nose, with sugary citrus.

A very tolerable and balanced mix of strong pine hop and bread baked dry finish. Slightly wet mouthfeel, but super easy drinking for this style. Feels almost a little borderline herbal tea English style IPA with some black oolong character in the palate also.

Overall it's a very balanced style but lacks punch and power that I sometimes like to have. The nose seems also a little muted and isn't very distinct. I do give it good points for easy drinkability, but I am not so sure on my desire to want to have it again. It is though a very easy drinking IPA.

12 oz. bottle. Nice cloudy copper colored brew, with a puffy, that disipates quickly.

Bold citrus and pine hop aroma. A bit of caramel malt.

Malt flavor, followed by citrusy and piney flavors. Solid amount of bitterness. Finishes with malt and bread linger.

Good body.

A - Pours golden amber with a one finger head. Left good lacing.

S - Grapefruit, pineapple, malty, moderate pine. Grapefruit really dominates the scent.

T - Apples, a bit of rotten banana, quite malty, pineapple in the middle, and a slightly resonous finish. Juicy as well.

M - Medium somewhat creamy body with almost no carbonation.

O - Overall, I've had a few too many IPA's tonight. Perhaps I have gotten sick of them tonight. I don't know. This one was good, but not a whole lot different than the other's i'kve had earlier.

Reviewed on 6/29/2010. On tap at Shorts. Pours a clear amber-orange with a white head. Aroma of citrus hops, hop oils, and sweet caramel malt. Flavor of bitter hops, citrus, acetone?, and caramel malt. Again, just decent for me although just a touch better on tap.
