Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Traveled up to Michigan this past weekend, and I had to grab one of these guys to try it out.

An average pour got me a finger and a half of very dense, sudsy looking head. The body is a translucent amber color with a steady column of bubbles making their way to the top. Nice retention on the head, and a decent bit of lacing too.

Mmmmm, hops. I smell pine, grapefruit and a touch of mango.

Starts off piney then eases a grapefruit flavor in on you. Very nice bitter, it sticks with you. Gets a bit of a wheat bread touch and a hint of orange zest on the back end.

Medium bodied. Slight stickiness, big dry finish. Good bitter stays with you. Carbonation seems light, but this doesn't detract at all.

Great IPA!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle.

A: Two finger head. Cloudy dark orange. Outstanding lacing.
S: Holy Hops! Very Strong smell of Grapefruit and Pine. Faint sweetness.
T: Starts sweet with grapefruit coming on strong. Finishes dry with a very long lingering bitterness (hoppy resin).
M: Smooth and Creamy. Overwhelming bitterness on the back of the tongue (in a good way).
D: Great the lingering bitterness makes you keep going in for another drink. Solid IPA.

Most definatly in my Top Five IPA's. Will be in my IPA purchase rotation for the future. Amazing when fresh.

sampled on tap at hopcat in grand rapids dec 20/08.

pours hazy orange with a small dense white head. the head drops slowly and leaves a solid sheet of lace behind.

aroma is great. grapefruit, orange, tangerine, pine. bread and cracker. slightly powdery hops. light alcohol. caramel. bit of toffee. slight floral character too.

taste is great. much like the aroma, this one is packed with hops. pine, grapefruit, orange, tangerine. powdery. cracker and white bread. light alcohol. touch of caramel.

mouthfeel is great. medium-low carbonation level. just under medium body with a nice dry finish.

drinkability is great. excellent balance, great depth of the hops and malt. this is a top notch ipa that would not last long in my fridge.

An absolute dream for any hop lover. Although perhaps "over the top" for some, I think it's my favourite beer, ever!

Clear amber with decent carbonation and head, but limited lacing. Beautiful hops and tropical fruits in the aroma, followed by a multi-faceted flavour that covers the full spectrum from the sweetness of caramelized malts and pineapple / mango to the lingering bitterness of a brilliantly hopped finish.

I've enjoyed this beer in several different towns and pubs, from both taps & bottles. The quality has been consistent and the beer wonderful. I am now enjoying one of the last bottles I brought back from Michigan - much older than it should be - and am absolutely stunned that it's as good as I remember...

A pilgrimage to "the upper peninsula" is in order!

Bought a couple of 6 packs during a quick trip to Michigan. It wasn't quite as good as what I remembered from 3 years ago, but it is a fine beer. It is massively hopped, but it has enough malt to up the alcohol and overall flavor. A long-time favorite beer that didn't disappoint.

Wow, wow, wow. What an unbelievable beer! This maybe my favorite IPA ever! This is simply great, especially as its not an imperial/double IPA. It has a deeper golden shade with some red and orange tones. Slightly hazy appearance, but pretty clean and crisp. I got a 2 finger that settled to a nice lace that stayed throughout the drink. Aromas of citrus, pineapple and grapefruit mostly, but I detect some blood orange and mango to. Holy hops! I get that fresh piney and deeper grass and herb overtones that give way to subtle breads malts in the background. The first sip gives way to a sharp explosion of hops and citrus, bitterness, pine, more hops, a more refined 'aged' hop flavor (maybe just the blend of hops they use created this taste for me), a subtle bitter sweetness balanced with the hops and citrus. I get some sweet maltiness of light toasted malts near the end, but a nice aftertaste of hops comes back to end the drink. Very very nice in my humble opinion. Hop-forward, similar to some of the Stone brews, very unique though, stands by itself as one of the best IPA's on the market. Definatly one of short's best brews. An absolute legend!

Notes from 11/15/10

A:Pours a nice looking orange color with a fluffy white head that falls fairly quickly,
excellent lacing is left down the glass

S:Very juicy citrus hops come thru up front along with slight tropical hint as well, along with that a nice malt backbone in there as well

T:Up front you get a small taste of the hops that lead in the malt backbone of the brew
in the middle, the backend is well the hops really start to takeover with a citrus and
tropical flavor that lingers around long after the sip is gone.

M:Body is where you would want it to be, not to thin but not to heavy. Palate is left
sticky from the hops and a little dry as well just enough that you want to take another sip.

D:With so many great breweries in Michigan its hard not find some great brews but
I'm go ahead and say that Shorts IPA is one of my favorite ones in the state. Easy
drinkability, super great taste, and all around enjoyable. Shorts is doing it, score some if
ya can.

A - 4.25 - NIce golden amber color with a thick white head on top of it that leaves awesome lacing (there's some hops in this mo). The bottle is cool as f*** too.
S - 4.5 - Awesome orange juice lice smell to it. Pine, grapefruit, bitter hops.
T - 4.5 - Very bitter, grapefruit and pine taste. Orange zest. Some bready malts in the background. Solid Michigan IPA, better than Two Hearted, more like the west coast IPAs (Ruination, Hop Stoopid).
M - 4.5 - Light-medium, alc covered, aftertaste is bitter grapefruit.
O - 4.5 - This is a very bitter beer, and very good. Grapefruit and pine are the main flavors. Less sweet than other IPAs, more bitter.

A: heavy orange with the addition of golden hues and a dash of burnt yellow bronze color. Bleach white foam is above average, as well as the lacing. Some large sheets of lace exist and are clinging to my glass, loaded and laced

S: soft biscuity malts with an intensely strong citrus edge. Fruity orange notes run amuck with whiffs of pineapple. Some spiciness is hidden at the back of each continued whiff. All in all this possess a mighty hop presence in the nose

T: imagine a car. In the trunk the contents are toasted pale malts, caramel, some nuttiness, and maybe a sugar cookie. The passengers are all hops (oranges, pines, and grapefruits) while the car is fueled by oily alpha sticky goodness. Overall this is a potent hop vehicle. Continually bitter and snappy, a near tongue destroyer. Leave it to Short's to produce something so tasty and raw

M: medium body and ample bubbles proved perfect support for the wonderful palate of flavors. This is quickly turning into one of my all time favorite IPAs

D: simply wonderful

On-tap poured into a nonic pint glass.

A- It poure a quite hazy orange-brown color with a 1 finger off-white head that became a solid lace leaving nice sticky rings down the glass.

S- There were definitley sweeter malt tones evident, but the grassy hops took center stage on this beer.

T- Much like the aroma, the hops were much stronger than the malt characteristics. The major flavor was grapefruit.

M- Very smooth feel. Light carbonation and a full body almost made me think of a cask style offering.

D- It's an easy drinker. I had two large drafts with dinner and thought I could have another. While the flavor tends more toward the hops, it's not a hop bomb that's going to kill the tastebuds.

Acquired this from GBVDave and gratefulbeer head, so a big THANK YOU to both of them as I have two to enjoy this evening!
Poured in to my Portsmouth pint glass...

A: This beer pours a hazy honey color with a 1/2 inch of khaki color head. Head recedes quickly leaving wispy, spider web lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is of big, fresh, earthy and piney hops , minor hints of floral hops. Hops, hops, and hops in the nose.

T: Taste is is of big, fresh, piney and earthy hops up in the forefront of this beer. WOW. Middle has just a mild malt presence to it. Nice floral hops balances out the finish on this beer.

M: Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation, light oily texture on this beer.

D: Goes down extremely easily, nicely balanced, mild but nice kick. This is a fantastic IPA that focuses on the the piney hops. If this brewery distributed out this way, this would be my every day IPA.

THIS BEER IS HUGE!!! LOVE IT! Tons of Hops, so beware if that’s not your bag. Lots going on with the variety of hops used along with the pine and citrus, so it kicks you in the teeth and makes you think at the same time. Tastes great in the bottle but if you see it on tap jump on it. One great beer.

Big, Big thanks to Mike for sending this Short's beauty over to me. Split into two small snifters between jac5084 and I.

A: Pours a hazy, glowing orange with a small head. The small yielding head may have been due to my prudent pour. Nice orange, copper color though without too sticky of a head.

S: Unimaginably good. Tons of citrus blasting hops right in your face. Mostly citrus, though a touch of grass and pine creep in to let you see their presence. Nice mango, pineapple and orange coupled with a touch of caramel sweetness.

T: Wow, top 5 IPAs hands down. Tons of mango, pineapple and apricot with a touch of residual sweetness. Not overly bitter, but on the finish some pine and grass comes in to balance the sweet fruit flavors. The caramel sweetness on the finish is just right to balance out the hoppy bitterness throughout the beer.

M/D: Spot on. Nice, moderately low carbonation for a creamy feel. Not too sticky, but you can feel this enveloping your tastebuds the whole way.

Thanks again Mike, this was a great beer!

Appearance: Huma pours an amber color with two fingers of white head. Keeps light retention.

Smell: The strong hop content brings a citrus smell, with grapefruit perhaps standing out. There’s also a light floral and earthy presence there.

Taste: The taste brings a full, big hop presence. The hops really stand out. Grapefruit, maybe some raisin, and a lot of soapy, crisp bitterness are the key notes here. There’s a good balance of light caramel malts in the background, but the crisp, fresh, bitter, and clean hops are what really stand out. And boy, do they ever.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is relatively high, but not too much so. The beer has a full, but not thick, feel.

Overall: This was an excellent, even top-notch, example of an American IPA. One of the best I’ve had, in fact. For the hop fan, this is gonna be a great choice anytime.

12 oz. bottle with no created on date punched.

Looks bottle-conditioned from the yeast on the bottom of the bottle. Pours an almost clear orange bronze with golden edges. Small, gauzy, lacy, off-white head. Very hoppy nose with appetizing doses of pineapple, resin, fresh pine sap, and citrus. Candied fruits and sweet malts chime in for some aromatic balance.

Taste follows the nose, with very fresh hop flavor right off the bat. Numbing herbal bitterness with equal parts pine sap and pineapple. Sugary cookie and fruit malt makes a brief appearance before the hop bitterness cranks it up into the finish. Some aspirin and raw hop bitterness show up in the end. Dry, lip-smacking finish. My tongue is comfortably numb. Medium-bodied with a creamy feel down the hatch. Nicely carbonated. If you like raw, dry-hop intensity, this is the beer for you!

Pours a murky peach color with a small white head. Aroma is a nice citrusy hoppiness with some tangerines and grapefruits, malt backbone combines to include a sweet peach aroma. Flavor is big citrus esp tangerine with some grapefruit. Peach also comes thru but lighter in the taste than in the aroma. Big size bitterness in the finish with some pepperiness and decent amt of dryness. This beer is big for the style, alcohol isn't too over the top, but hop aromas and taste are big and bold and the bitterness is on the same level as some dipa's. Great beer that can fortunately be had locally, hopefully Short's other beers will see larger distribution in the future.

12 oz bottle from Hawks10, poured into a Monica while grilling, pretty excited for this.

Appearance is perfect as far as I'm concerned with a bright, rich clear copper body that has a massive creamy off white head that is supported by a constant stream of bubbles and never fades to less than a finger thick. Also leaves behind thick sheets of lacing. Aroma reeks of fresh hops, very earthy and citrus rind with strong caramel malt and grain notes as well. Flavor is very similar, with both over the top and bitter hops and an equally potent sweet and earthy malt backbone. Body is medium thick with soft, active carbonation. The beer is very bitter throughout, including the finish but the strong malt body provides nice balance producing a very drinkable, aggressively hopped IPA. I rarely get too excited about IPAs but this one is a standout for my tastes.

Got this from SuperNova777 for winning a beer poker league tourney. Thanks buddy!

Pours a Dark golden copper color with quite a bit of off-white head and really good lacing.

Aroma is full of hops. Smells great!

Taste is very hoppy as well. But it does have some good malt flavor in the middle as well.

Light to medium mouthfeel that goes down smooth and easy.

Overall a very good tasting beer. I definitely enjOyed it and will be trying again when I get a chance.

Exceptional IPA with strong pine, citrus, and light spice hop aroma and taste. Generous bittering hop additions and a medium body balance very well, if you can take the up-front hop blast.

A - Hazy gold with about a finger of creamy head that fades into a film on the top with a ring around the edge.

S - Sweet mother of hoppy. A twinge of citrus.

T - Much like the smell. Mostly hops with a bit of citrus. A little grassy. Bitterness throughout that lingers. Just fantastic.

M - Not overly carbonated. Very smooth.

D - Oh yeah. I wish this was more available where I live. This could definitely be an all summer long beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at fridge temperature.

L – Pale amber color with a 2-finger white frothy head. Really nice retention and good lacing. Clear with a good amount of carbonation.

S – This is a hop bomb for sure. A strong hop presence with grapefruit, orange, and mango aromas. There’s maybe a little bit of bready, caramel malt, but this belongs to the hops.

T – Starts off sweet with bready malt and citrus flavors and then almost instantaneously morphs into a bitter monster with a blast of grapefruit, orange, mango, and a little bit of pine hops. This is an intensely bitter IPA.

F – Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a sticky and chewy mouthfeel, and a very bitter and dry finish. Bitter grapefruit lingers for a great amount of time.

O – This is a deliciously bitter IPA. Short’s doesn’t lie when they say this has 140 IBU. This really tastes like a DIPA. I’m impressed that they packed so much bitterness into a single IPA. Due to the intensely bitter flavor that seems to build forever, the drinkability suffers a little, but this beer is so enjoyable that it’s probably better to sip on it anyway. Great beer from Short’s. I’ll be looking for more from them in the future.

Clear coppery orange with a sticky, white cap. Chunky lacing and great head retention. Bright orange and tangerine aroma with a bit of a sharper grapefruit edge. Slightly powdery and piney. Solid hop bitterness turns a bit sharp towards the finish. Lots of pine resin and grapefruit pith. Fruity sweetness and a flash of caramel malts mid-palate provide just enough balance. Lingering bitterness with a hint of alcohol. Medium bodied with slight warmth, a bit dry with moderate carbonation. A great IPA, plenty of punch with lots of flavour.

Appearance: Relatively clear gold with some copper leanings. Head is rocky and bright-white and dwindles to a sticky lacing in short order.

Smell: Tons of hops. I'm getting a bunch of orange rind mixed with some pineapple and pine. It hits every range I thought hops could hit without being too crazy. A touch of malt sweetness lingers in the back, but the nose is dominated by the hops.

Taste: Similar to the nose. Lots of citrus hits the tongue and quickly gives way to a lingering pine flavor. The thing I thought of as pineapple on the nose is long gone. Some sweetness from the malts drops some caramel notes, perhaps something biscuity as well, and quickly departs.

Mouthfeel: A little heavier than I was expecting. It almost drinks DIPA heavy, but lacks the overtly syrupy quality. Carbonation is on the low side and it finishes a little dry.

Drinkability: I could probably drink a few of these before my tastebuds begged me to switch it up. Goes down easy due to low carbonation.

Overall: I'm lucky to have found a 12-pack of this while it was in MA for EBF weekend. It's an amazing take on the American IPA and brings the midwest brewers in to serious IPA contention. This might be one of the better IPA's I've had in recent history.

Appears veiled gold with some wisps of suspended particulates (probably yeast) floating a couple of inches below the surface. A vigorous pour gets you two fingers of luxurious, slightly rocky head that sticks around for a long time, generating some attractive latticework for the rest of glass.

Smells yummy: A whiff of sharp pine with some lemon and peach present but in more of a west coast proportion.

Tastes as it smells: definitely more of a west-coast experience. This one is pine forward with just enough lemon zest and grapefruit to keep things from being too out of balance. Some malt sweetness comes in at the end to compete with -- and eventually lose to -- the intense bitter end that seems to continue unabated until your next sip compounds the issue. This would stand up to many a DIPA and, in the IPA sphere, comfortably fits into the "ringer" category next to Furious and Torpedo. Those looking for a hop fiesta will be most pleased.
