Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

12 oz. bottle. Nice cloudy copper colored brew, with a puffy, that disipates quickly.

Bold citrus and pine hop aroma. A bit of caramel malt.

Malt flavor, followed by citrusy and piney flavors. Solid amount of bitterness. Finishes with malt and bread linger.

Good body. (273 characters)

A - Pours golden amber with a one finger head. Left good lacing.

S - Grapefruit, pineapple, malty, moderate pine. Grapefruit really dominates the scent.

T - Apples, a bit of rotten banana, quite malty, pineapple in the middle, and a slightly resonous finish. Juicy as well.

M - Medium somewhat creamy body with almost no carbonation.

O - Overall, I've had a few too many IPA's tonight. Perhaps I have gotten sick of them tonight. I don't know. This one was good, but not a whole lot different than the other's i'kve had earlier. (532 characters)

Reviewed on 6/29/2010. On tap at Shorts. Pours a clear amber-orange with a white head. Aroma of citrus hops, hop oils, and sweet caramel malt. Flavor of bitter hops, citrus, acetone?, and caramel malt. Again, just decent for me although just a touch better on tap. (264 characters)

Got this beer from a good friend who went through Michigan.
The smell of this beer needs to be marketed as a cologne. It is amazing! This beer's bouquet is equal to that of notable IIPA's. It hints of pineapple, a little grapefruit, and a good amount of citrus that resembles tangerine. There's also a little pine in the nose.
Taste is smooth and full of malty crystal and two row along with a little caramel malt with soem subtle hop flavors. There's a gradual build of big piney hop bitterness at the swallow.
Very smooth moutfeel for an under 7 percent beer.
Love this beer! (577 characters)

Thanks to kzoobrew for sending me this one!

Pours a hazy honey orange with a 2 inch puffy off-white head that settles to a small cap. Nice foamy rings of lace mark the drink down. Smell is of solid biscuit-like malt, pineapple and its juice, and citrus zest hops. Taste is of citrus zest hops up front with a nice malt flavor on the finish. There are also some tropical fruit flavors that show up in the taste. Mild hop bitterness lingers on the palate after each sip. A decent level of carbonation but the beer seems a bit flat to me. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a slightly subdued smell that is actually very hop forward on the palate. (651 characters)

The bitterness is strong inn this one...

Reviewing as I sip - pours a beautiful dark & hazy golden color with a small amount of head that dissipates quickly leaving some nice white lacing around the glass.

The aroma is somewhat mild but has some elements of pine & citrus. The flavor is a bitter hop bomb that explodes in your mouth instantly and really dominates the flavor palette. At first it kind of turned me off, but with each sip I'm enjoying it more and more. If your a lover of super bitter hoppy beers this one is for you.

Not my ideal IPA, but I would definitely drink it again. (592 characters)

12oz bottle from Beer Baron (Detroit, MI).  2.49. Bottled 5/09/12. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

Pours clear orange amber with a half finger chalky head. Little lace.

Smells of grapefruit, pine and biscuity malts.

Taste mixes bittersweet grapefruit, rind, sweet bread and spice.

Medium light feel, mild carbonation. Long dry bitter aftertaste.

Above average but nothing stands out. (399 characters)

Starts with a modest head and settles to a thick ring with some inconsequencial minute bubbles in the center. Leaves ring lace after each sip. Mild haze on the golden color.

Mild starting aroma. Shows good balance.

The flavor is surprizingly bitter given the smell. Highly carbonated with a strong white pepper swallow. The body is as one might expect for an IPA. Long lingering bitter aftertaste. (401 characters)

Thanks to GbVDave for this one. 12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Bottle conditioned. Poured a hazy gold with a ton of carbonation. Three fingers of fluffy white head. Pretty fragrant with citrus from hops and some caramel malt. Piney hops dominate the flavor, almost to the point of tasting a little green. Medium bodied. Drying finish from the hops. I got some yeast in there, so it had some yeasty twang. (411 characters)

Aroma is strong, hoppy and woody with a hint of grapefruit. It pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a thick, fluffy white head that sticks around a bit and leaves some nice lacing. Flavor is hoppy, woody and fairly bitter with an undertone of sour citrus that is more orange than grapefruit. Fizzy, fairly zingy texture leaves a hoppy and tingly finish with just a little bitterness. (386 characters)

Received in trade with cosmonick. (Cheers!)
Poured from 12oz bottle into imperial pint glass.

Aroma: Pineapple, light citrus, and orange juice sweetness.

Appearance: 2 finger creamy off-white head. Golden-orange, semi-hazy body. Nice soapy lacing!

Flavor: Wow! Very strong bitterness that hits straight out of the gate and lingers long through the finish. (The label didn't lie!) Sweetness if very low, but shows up to provide an brief nod to balance. This one is like eating a grapefruit without sugar, but with even less sweetness. Definitely one of the more bitter, drier IPAs I've ever had.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. And hop tannins are very drying.

Overall: The bottle label says "A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth", but I found complexity lacking from what was more like a "hop explosion in my mouth". Not bad, but also not one I'd seek out again unless I had a serious fever for some bitterness. That said, it would be interesting to try on-tap! (994 characters)

12oz received in my most recent trade with Kbeals... Kevin is out of control... I think he might be in cahootz with a FedEx lady... I don't know... but the box was amazing.

Only wanted a beer or two tonight.. but I figure I better have a third while finishing boxing up some brews .... this is poured into my Delirium goblet.

Rocky 1" white head.. dies back atop a slightly hazed lite amber brew....

Citrus rind .. lite caramel malts.. some nice biscuit maltiness.. a bit of diacetyl..

Flavor has more diacetyl than I was hoping for... a bit buttery... big bitterness at the front with some mild maltiness throughout.. tons of citrus hops really scream American .. some floral hops shine too .. nice body and carbonation..

The buttery aspect is too pronounced in my palate... I've been told that I have a pretty low tolerance.. but I am getting it a bit heavy.

Kevin is an Uber Trader!! Thanks homeboy.... the love will never be lost.

Appears a hazed light orange with a small white head that fades into a mild cap. Small scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of pine like hops, vanilla, citrus, and minerals.
Taste is of the aromas with some herbal flavors.
Mouthfeel is bitter, herbal, and sticky. (288 characters)

Pours a brilliant coppery color with a flourescent orange hue. Solid moderately sized head maintains well. Some lacing. Smell is quite resiny and intense. Reminds me of piney juice, if there is such a thing. There also seems to be lots of grapefruit flavors and a touch of a nutty toffee crunch. Taste doesn't match appearance or aroma. Really sharp hops and quite bitter. The flavor is decent but skewed. Malts seem fruity but never truly find their way. This is solid but a bit too sharp and a bit too watery. I liked the first half of my pint, the second half wore on me. (574 characters)

Poured this beer it has a orange hue body with just a little head. The aroma is of bitter hops and citrus aroma. The taste has a bitter hop upfront followed by a nice malt taste. I i also get some citrus notes also. The mouthfeel is nice, leaves a bitter after taste. Overall a good ipa. (287 characters)

(12oz bottle courtesy of rayl101. Thanks Kevin!!). Pours cloudy yellow-orange color with off-white, fluffy head. Aroma has resin, mango, orange and a bit of dankness. Taste is semi-sweet with a bitter, almost minty/herbal end. Medium bodied with an oily texture. Bitter finish, but balanced by the malts. Pretty good, but I would have liked this a tad sweeter. (360 characters)

Much thanks to dashirey for bringing a few bottles of this to Deuanes recent tasting party. Fresh from MI and poured from a 12 ounce bottle into my glass on 3/21/09. Appears a hazy golden yellow color with about a finger of off white head. The head leaves a nice lac on the inside of my glass with each sip. Smells and tastes of orange, pine, grapefruit pith/rind, essential orange oils, and very little caramel malt presence. Very bitter and medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Did I mention the bitterness of this beer? Despite the bitterness, it drank pretty god. I think I'll leave it on my wants list for now. (636 characters)

A-a deep golden with a fingers worth of white head that sticks to the glass

S-Hops dominate the smell with pine, citrus, and grapefruit. A malt breadiness is well hidden behind the hops, but does sneak through

T-HUGE amount of hops, the bitterness seems to be masking any other taste. A light malt biscuit like taste comes out, but for the most part it is all bitter hops.

M-medium body, moderate carbonation, very dry, bitter finish that lingers

Too bitter for me, the bitterness hides any other flavor which takes away the drinkability in my mind. (553 characters)

Gold/orange color with a substantial off-white head. Smells like flowers. Not just floral hops but like a bouquet on your grandmother's dinner table. It smells like quite a bit of hops have been packed into the recipe. Also a touch of sour dish rag smell. Tastes extremely bitter... even by IPA standards. It lacks the citrus fruity flavors that I'm used to in this style of beer. Mostly bitter pine with an oily texture. The aftertaste is a little unpleasant as well... Kind of like I've been sucking on a dirty pine cone. Creamy and/or oily texture and medium body. Nice rings are laced down the glass with every sip but the appearance and aroma build you up for a let down with this beer. It's good beer but not great. (721 characters)

Thanks to grub for this one. Shared with my wife last Friday night with our supper, assorted cheeses, fruits, spreads and smoked bison.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle, bottled 02-18-10.

Appearance: Slightly hazy golden body with a generous 2-3 finger egg white head that recedes to a thin ring.

Smell: Hops, very resiny with lots of malt, melon and a bit of bitterness.

Taste: Very malt as to be expected but still a good dose of fruit and some hops. A bit on the dry side.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low carbonation and a lasting bitterness.

Drinkability: Fairly decent IPA with some good taste.

Overall: Would have loved to try it fresh but it still has a healthy amount of flavor. A worthy IPA. (701 characters)

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. A small trace of head rises to the top and dissipates in little time. Color is a cloudy bronze, not unlike apple cider.

The scent is reminiscent of citrus fruits, oranges and grapefruits to be exact. There is definitely a good hop presence in the aroma but it takes a back seat to the sweet smelling citrus.

There are a few flavors released in varying degrees at different times, all of them bitter. I expect an IPA to punch me in the face with hops and Huma Lupa Licious doesn't disappoint on that front. However, I prefer that a brew has some balance in the flavor, and this is where Huma Lupa feels like a one trick pony. The flavor hits slow at first with a malty feel but no real malt flavor to speak of. A grapefruit bite comes on slowly and reaches a minor apex only to be totally overwhelmed by hops, hops, HOPS! Yes, I'm drinking what appears to be crushed rose petals in liquid form. It finishes bitter, with notes of grapefruit peel and clings for dear life to the back of my throat. I feel like I just bit into a grapefruit, peel and all. It has hops in spades, but that seems to be where it stops. More of a malty balance would be desired.

Despite the taste, this feels awesome in my mouth. It's thick and smooth and malty with just a touch of carbonation to provide some effervescence and enhancing the bite of the bitter flavors. It's hands-down the best feeling IPA I've had in my mouth.

The drinkability of Huma Lupa Licious has its pros and cons. A plus is that the 6.6% abv is virtually undetectable amidst the rich hoppy flavor and smooth mouthfeel. A big con is that these are just too bitter to want to drink one after another. It would be more appropriate to drink one of these to add an exclamation point to the end of a session. You'd really have to appreciate hops to session this on its own. (1,864 characters)

Appearance: standard IPA appearance. Golden-rod with slight haziness. Moderate head with decent amount of lacing.

Smell: the smell (and taste) of hops absolutely dominate this beer, for better or worse.

Taste: This beer has really been a grower, but anyone who loves IPAs for the bitterness and hops should definitely check this one out. I wouldn't particularly recommend the beer for someone not accustomed to very bitter beers, or strong IPAs.

Mouthfeel: A very drinkable beer. The bitterness lingers for a while, but isn't problematic for anyone used to that feeling. Smooth and freshing, a great summer beer. This is also a great beer to pair with a hearty dinner. (671 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle.

A: Pours a hazy golden, straw color with a one finger white head. Only moderate head retention with a nice crown and good lacing though.

S: Pretty dominate hop smell with the citrus notes being the strongest. Some floral notes as well.

T: A lot of bitterness with out much malt balance in my opinion. Flavor consists of lots of pine, a little grapefruit, and quite a bitter finish and aftertaste. A little bit more sweetness starts to come through as this warms. I actually felt that this beer got better as it got close to room temperature.

M: Kind of a sticky feel, could use slightly more carbonation.

D: Not my favorite IPA, but not bad either, especially if very hoppy beers are your thing. (727 characters)

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A - orangey brown color with a bit of opaqueness. tiny head that is quickly to the edge of the glass where it lingers.

S - nice floral hoppy smell, citrus, vanilla.

T - nice hoppy dry taste . balances well with the malt.

M - sticks around for the perfect amount of time keeping that same balance.

D - very nice beer got two of these as shorts was being distributed for a very brief period of time. wish i picked up a few more. (464 characters)

Bottle into pint glass
A – 1+ finger off white head settled to a very thin layer, nice lacing all around, slightly hazy gold with amber hues, impressive 4.5
S – citrus, dry grasses, toasty with a bit of tropical fruit sweetness 3.5
T – Bready with an herbal hop bitterness, grapefruit zest, mild pine, decent malt balance with some caramel character, I’m personally not so fond of the hop profile 3.5
M – Moderate body, slightly sticky, nice smoothing small bubble carbonation 4
O – Hop profile/flavors that I tend to like is lacking but brew still has substantial hop bitterness. Looks and feels good, but I’ll skip buying this one again as the taste is not enough to my liking. 3.5 (697 characters)
