Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

12oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe. Reviewed from notes.

A: Golden-orange with a slight haze. Huge, foamy white head has excellent staying power. Clumps of foamy lacing cling to the glass in rings.

S: Pine, mint, herbal scents. Mango, orange, pineapple. Faint whiff of a biscuity malt backbone.

T: Intense, oily hops. Quick flash of pine, mango and tropical fruits. Bitterness starts out a bit modest, but builds in intensity and becomes formidable. Catty hop tastes. Hops turn herbal toward the end with an intense cigar-like tobacco flavor. Dries a bit toward the finish and finally discloses malt tastes of dough and biscuit, along with sticky bud and tobacco.

M: Medium bodied. Full and creamy. Moderate carbonation.

O: This beer is a hop bomb. Short's promised some complex malt tastes here too, but didn't really deliver, as the hops never let up enough for them to get through. As with some other aggressively hopped beers I've had, I found some of the hop flavors to be distracting or offensive. In this case it was the strong herbal/tobacco edge that really turned me off.

Notes: I don't think this was a bad beer; just not for me. Most hop-heads should be able to appreciate it.

not as hoppy as the great american ipas are nowadays. pours a copper wheat color with an average whitish head. smells like stale bread, malty but not fresh. some nondiscript hops in there as well, but a weird balance. flavor is way too malty for an ipa in my opinion, completely drowning out any interesting hop flavors that might be present, instead just some bitterness at the end. i would feel better about calling this one an esb than an ipa, but thats just me. alcohol isnt readily tastable, but it feels stronger than it should. plenty of carbonation but just sort of awkward in the mouth and belly. i didnt care for this one and will not buy it again. im surprised this is reviewed so favorably on BA... its just so average and unbalanced

Bottle from trade. Amber pour with white head. Aroma is pungent pine, citrus. Taste is nice balance of traditional hop flavors - resin, orange, grapefruit. Malt helps to balance the sweetness. Lingering bitter finish.

One of the better Shorts offerings in my opinion. I look forward to this one every year.

Pours a nice medium copper--penny like--color, with a pretty fluffy and tannish head.

The first thing that hits the nose is an astringent hop aroma, followed by the presence of citrus with slight floral hop hints. A bit of malt finishes out a very balanced and pleasant aroma.

The taste is disappointing. It is dominated by biting hops. In and of itself this is not a bad thing, but here there is too little to complement the bitter sting. There is a bit of malt, but not nearly enough to provide a satisfying backbone. Citrus tones are notable as well, and somewhat pleasant. On the whole, though, this is a pretty one-dimensional flavor.

Mouthfeel is crisp but full. Astringent hop makes it very biting. Potent, but not in the most pleasant way.

Overall, I am not a big fan of this beer. It is very unbalanced in my opinion. Was expecting much more malt. While it is present, it is totally overwhelmed by hop bitterness. Hop bombs are fine every once in a while. To my mind, though, they are not very complex or great beers.

September 24, 2011. Bottled August 25, 2011. Thanks to splax23 for this.

Pours an almost-amber with a nice one and a half finger cloudy head.

Very nice nose of grapefruit, light citrus, pine, and some grassy bitterness. Pretty well-rounded; I don't know why, but I didn't expect this to be as aromatic as it was. The bready backbone helps display the hop profile.

A bit of a letdown after the nose: medium grapefruit and citrus bitterness, but the sweet maltiness peeks through more strongly, cutting through the bitterness. I would not have guessed this had 140 IBUs. Tastes "young" for some reason, despite the disappointing display of hops.

Not my favorite hop profile, but one of the better Short's beers I've had, especially the nose right after the pour. I wouldn't seek this out, but it's a decent showing.

12oz bottle served into a Old Hickory Pint glass

A- It generates a nice foamy head the resides into a light lacing around the edge of the glass. The color is a translucent amber.

S- Due to the fact i have no idea how old this bottle is, it's sweet and malty. A fresh bottle ( if this isn't one ) would smell more crisp. In saying that, I get a lot of sweet malts and bitter hops. Not to much fresh aroma hops.

T- A nice balance unlike the smell. The bitter hops flavor and sweet malt meet perfectly. The acidic flavor of the hop and sweet tone of the malt complement one anther very nicely.

M- Just as an IPA should be. Drinkability is good and carbonation is moderate. It's good.

O- Maybe I had an older bottle but this seemed malty and bitter. I felt that the characteristics of an high quality hops was present but stale.

Have had the Short's Huma a number of times... most recently out of a bottle in Grand Rapids at a tasting event.

A- The beer looks great in the glass. Pours with a real nice color and great head. The foam laces the glass nicely as you drink it.

S- The nose on this I.P.A. is almost all floral and pine. Wish it had a bit more citrus going on.

T - Taste is pretty extreme and very hoppy but hit's the spot that most I.P.A. drinkers are looking for.

M- This beer is a palate killer! But in a kind of good way. I love this beer but don't plan on tasting much after you've had the Huma. It is so hoppy and has such extreme bitterness that it does not lend itself to more than a few sips before your mouth is overwhelmed.

O- Overall I like the beer a lot. Better on draft I think as it seems to be a bit more balanced. I will certainly have it again, and again and offer it to friends.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Thanks to thabigmp for this one.

A: Orange with a yellow tint. Slight haze. One finger white head with good retention and OK lacing.

S: Nice blend of citrus and floral hops. Like grapefruit and pineapple flowers. A bready caramel mingles nicely also.

T: The bready caramel is upfront, but only for a second. The mixture of citrus and floral isn't as good as the nose was. Finishes earthy and grassy. The grapefruit is fairly astringent at the end.

M: Light to medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Slightly slick and oily. Very dry but the acidity of the citrus ruins the finish.

O: It's a decent IPA. Nothing I would drink on a regular basis. The citrus needs to be tamed.

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 9/19/11
*From notes

A: Beautiful golden sunset. Hazy orange-amber that's a thing of real beauty. A good pour yields a fluffy 1.5 finger head with great retention and top notch lacing.

S: (Not too tropical) Juice, though what really shines through here is a piney resin that clings to the nostrils.

T: Christ, it's like sucking on a pine cone. Extremely sappy. I can't think of another IPA quite this sticky. My tounge feels like it's been stabbed by pine needles. As I let it sit and open a bit, there's a mild fruitiness that comes through, and in the end there's a pretty decent layer of malt that tries to hold this unbalanced beer together.

M: Really nice - creamy, rich and dense. Yet it's also easy to get your mouth around and enjoy without fatigue.

O: Short's Huma-Lupa-Licious was a long time want, and I'm glad to have finally ticked it. Having said that, this wasn't a favorite of mine, as there's a real lack of balance in flavor. With a bit more touch, this could be fantastic. As it stands though, I wouldn't go out of my way to grab a pint.

A: Three finger head that dissipates to a very creamy one finger whilst leaving its mark. A bit darker than usual for the style, a rather copper amber color. Laces pretty well, what a nice looking IPA.

S: Could be more aromatic. Pine dominates, there is some "rank" here. Some citrus comes through.

T: Definitely wasn't expecting the kick in the pants from the DIPA like bitterness. A bit more bitter than HopSlam (or at least feels like it). There is a lot of "rank" flavor here, if you know what I mean. The hop's close cousin definitely paid a visit. There is a hint of malt on the finish, but the balancing seems to be a bit off with the beer favoring bitter. The finish isn't very clean with a lingering resin-like bitterness.
This is a bitter IPA rather than a floral IPA, I would say this one fails to be an American IPA and tastes a lot like a British IPA. The bitterness is dynamic and find myself quite happy with it now, but the hop florals just aren't here. I wish this had the strong and fresh hop presence of Short's Good Humans.

M: There is good carbonation that gives an illusion of good mouthfeel, yet it is masking the fact that this beer is rather watery.

D: I'm done, forever, after a single one. This is not an American IPA in my book. All the bitterness of a DIPA, without the hop flavor to back it up.

O: I am sipping this one due to the fact there is a bit more bitterness and a lot less flavor than I would of liked. There is nothing in this beer that is better than Bell's Two Hearted, appearance aside.

EDIT: 76 IBU? Why is this categorized as a regular IPA? Seriously? That is almost 10 more than HopSlam! Why have this beer, with all the bitterness, without enough fresh hop flavor to back it?

Thanks goes to Randalld for this beer. Poured into my pint glass the beer is rather clear orange amber. About two fingers of off white head recede to leave a thick lace ring around the glass.

The aroma is super juicy grapefruit, oranges and lemons. Light pine but mostly citrus. Maybe just a hint of malt. This nose is all hops all the time. Not hot or sharp at all though.

The flavor is much more pine and grass than the nose. Sharp piney hops and fresh cut grass. Dry and bitter. Quite unbalanced for an AIPA.

Medium body with mild carbonation.

Overall the nose was very pleasing yet the flavor was out of whack. The drinkability suffered on this one.
