Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

This is a composite rating compiled from the couple times I bothered to take notes for this over the past few years. I would just like to put up here rather then in the notes that the 140 IBU rating in the description is incredibly misleading, this is less hoppy then two hearted or centennial both of which are around 70 IBU. Based on all the (I)IPAs I've had I would put this about 60 if I had to guess.

A - Pours a pleasant golden color with a rather quickly dissipating two finger white head. Surprisingly opaque for the lightness of the color.

S - Not much on the nose at first pass, perhaps a bit of general greenness.

T - The hops are certainly present as should be expected for an IPA with a name like this. There is a bit of malt presence but not a whole lot. The hops have a (not unpleasant) grassy / slightly-piney characteristic with a hint of lemon zest, although, the hops flavor is not quite on the level of Centennial/2H.

M - Mouthfeel is a bit fuller then filtered IPAs given the cloudy nature. Taste was not off at all so I'm just assuming its unfiltered/they bottle condition. Still light enough to be sessionable and it is relatively dry as a lot of IPAs are.

O - Certainly a decent IPA; I think in dryer (IPA wise) parts of the country this could easily beat the local offerings but being from Michigan and having access all of the time to brews like Two Hearted and Centennial makes me a bit pickier then most. I would put this in the high B+ category for Michigan made IPAs along with the likes of Mad Hatter from New Holland. Not bad by any means but the competition is tough in Michigan when it comes to standard IPAs.

From a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass

Appearance: Light, clear copper; head settles quickly, some lacing; good retention of a thin layer of head throughout the taste.

Smell: Pine, grapefruit and malt. Strong hop smell on this one.

Taste: Lots of floral and pine flavor up front. BItter citrus, like lemon mixed with bitter orange dominates the wash.

Feel: This is a strong single IPA, and has little bit of a syrupy mouthfeel, but not heavy. Definitely a medium on the body.

Overall: A very assertive IPA that bunches above its weight in hop power. I think it's very good, but rated it just short of outstanding (I should have taken 2 weeks away from IPAs after the Heady Topper). In smaller doses this works well and satisfies, but for more than a pint the bitterness could get in the way (or maybe not…).

"A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth"

Huma Lupa Licious is copper, hazy, and turbid with some tangerine highlights. The head rises easily to a respectable cap that becomes craggy and has a dirty white eggshell sheen. Intricate, scrub-your-glass, chunky lacing gets left behind after each drink. That's purty.

Candied orange and grapefruit peel are the dominant hop characters with orange overtaking. A touch of pine that borders on herbal runs through the middle and random citrus pops up here and there. The hop profile is slightly muddled but mouthwatering none the less all over the top of a dry biscuity base. A touch of toast maybe but biscuit dominates.

The flavor is more substantial than the aroma. Biscuity malt lies down a base for a big, bitter, citrus and pine hoppiness. The grapefruit and orange, bitter in this case as opposed to sweet in the nose, run from beginning to end with some herbals and pine sneaking in for show. There's actually a large malt presence, although pale, but the bitterness is so large that it obliterates the malt.

Again, big hop bitterness. My lips are halfway numb. The body is moderate and has a nice silky feel with mellow carbonation that's not noticeable pushing the beer along. The bitterness continues to grow.

This beer came to the Chicago market for a couple months back in the day and I bought it constantly. This is the first time I've had one in a year or two and it's as good as I remember. Bold flavor and bitterness but still manages to walk the line of drinkability.
