American IPA |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

On-tap at Jacoby's in Detroit.

Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA has a super-duper classic look: toasty golden brown complexion, a thin and natural haziness, a trim head. Everything is far from shipshape, however; its foam splashes all over the glass and leaves drapes of lacing worthy of being hung in my living room.

Some varieties of hops impart such convincing and colourful fruit flavours that you'd swear you were drinking fruit juice; with this beer, however, it feels more like you're sucking on the bitter skin of the fruit (as oppose to chowing down on the sweet flesh). There's a lot of dry orange and grapefruit pith and the acidity of lemons. Plenty of tree resins too.

There is also - as the aroma made plainly apparent - a lot of caramelly malt to help counter those flavours. It completely relaxes the beer's ramped-up alpha-acids. The tastes of tree sap have a similar effect: their gooey, serum-y texture and pine-like notes combine with the lemony citrus oils to become a little bit 'soapy' but also a lot more agreeable.

The brewery must have figured out how to balance bitter and sweet right down to the hundredth decimal place; practitioners of piphilology may have found a new challenge. While caramel malt cruises through the aftertaste, flashbacks of hoppy resins are constant and vivid.

Huma-Lupa-Licious is a pretty fan-frickin-tastic IPA. Devout hopheads might consider it a little mellow while those still apprenticing in the alpha-acid arts are likely to find it a wee menacing, but there's more than enough resiny bitterness to please the former and just enough sweet maltiness to relieve the latter. An IPA suitable for everyone!

A: hazy Orangeish with a nice head and lacing

S: extreme! Citrus floral and grassy smell

T: a complete hop bomb. Taste is dominate by a taste of weed. Mixed with grapefruit pine grass and the slightest caramel malt backbone.

M: full bodied and chewy

O: I usually like more balanced beers... But this was a unique hop bomb and I enjoyed it.

Enjoyed on tap at HopCat. Served in a nonic pint.

A: Pours a solid orange color with a thin white head forming on the pour. It recedes to a solid ring that leaves some sticky lace down the glass.

S: A little melon and fruity berry on the nose. Some caramel malt sweetness with a hint of biscuit.

T: The taste is like the nose, but a tad sweeter. Candied melon with fresh picked strawberry. Some light grass with some caramel sweetness and a biscuity malty.

M: Medium to light bodied with a medium high carbonation. Easily drinkable with a sweet fruit finish.

O: Really easy drinkable with a solid balance of flavors. Definitely the best Short's beer I've ever had.

On tap at DTW airport in nonic pint glass - slight haze, but nice floral and spicy aroma. Taste is bitter and dry, but appropriate for style with pleasant mouthfeel. Light lacing and head retention - this may partially be due to how clean the glass was. No off flavors detected. Positive overall impression.

Had on-tap at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, MI.

Appearance: A very hazy orange color. Lacing is very nice on this one.

Smell: Dominantly pine aromas, though there is some citrus in there as well. A pleasant IPA, but not the best smelling one I've had.

Taste/feel: Much like the smell -- a lot of the piney, earthy aromas come through in the taste, and there's very little citrus. The finish is also pretty intensely bitter, I found, and there's no real balance. There's some malt there, but this is an IPA for the hopheads, no doubt. The feel is probably the stand out, as it is very smooth, and quite creamy. I had this straight out of a fresh, just-put-in keg, so I feel like I had this beer as fresh as possible, basically.

Not my favorite IPA (just a bit too bitter and unbalanced for my liking), but I'd most definitely have it again, as it's an extremely solid Short's beer. One of their best year rounders, without a doubt.

Appearance: amber-brown, medium head, and good lacing.

Smell: pinecone sweet hops and malty goodness.

Taste: lots of yummy hops and bitter grapefruit with a malty touch at the end.

Mouthfeel: medium and bitter.

Overall:
This is a good IPA. Loads of good fairly malty flavor. It is a must try for IPA fans.

A- A bright copper body with licks of green at the edges bubbles energetically under a solid finger of clean white head. Good lacing and reasonable head retention stick around the rims of the glass.

S- Lots of herbal hop flower up front with some mild citric sweetness and a bit of earthiness followed by light alcoholic tones.

T- Soft citric sweetness greets the palate and segues into a refreshingly sharp bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit or lemon rind. Bold and just barely saccharinr, a strong and earthy bitterness hangs on the tongue for quite some time, a welcome quality from such a hop bomb.

M- Just enough carbonation to carry the flavors and support the lengthy aftertaste, and even a bit of good chewiness. Right on for the style.

O- A very full-flavored and full-bodied IPA from a brewery I had previously only associated with dessert beers. Definitely recommended for hop heads who don't like their IPAs strong and not too sweet.

Had on-tap at Ashley's--Ann Arbor

A - Pours a light pale with a touch of caramel. Nice fluffy head that dissipates slowly and leaves a lot of lacing

S - Tons of hops, very earthy and piney. Not a ton of malt present, a bit of grapefruit and zest as well

T - Very, very piney. Tons of resin, grass, and pine needles. A touch of flower hops seems to offset some of the bitterness, but make no mistake, this is a bitter, bitter IPA.

M - Dries the mouth quite a bit. Full bodied taste. Finish is very bitter and mouth watering.

Overall - It was definitely a solid IPA. Not much by way of balance in this one, but a tasty IPA

I had this on-tap at the brewpub. Poured into a sample class.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber with a mild off white head and a little bit of lacing.

Smell: Some sweet bready malt along with hops that are quite herbal.

Taste: Follows closely from the smell. Bready malt backbone is balanced with herbal hop bitterness. Not a very bitter IPA, the finish is somewhat sweet.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mild tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This has a very different hop profile from most of the IPAs that I have had. It was a pleasant beer and I would have it again.

Pours a nice yellow/orange color w a nice two finger head. Good carbonation and lacing on this beer. Nose is that of malt, hops, grapefruit and maybe a little orange. Taste is good- almost really good. Very bitter, and continues to shred your taste buds the more it warms up. Very good example of the style. Feel is medium bodied, and definitely has a bite to it. Overall, this is definitely one to pick up if you can find it- I enjoyed it.

Had on-tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids, MI.

Poured an amber/copper color with a little bit of haze. Not much head to speak of, but it was consistent throughout leaving good lacing.

Smells of bitter hops, some citrus notes and pine. A good whiff left a slight burning sensation in the nostrils. This beers is about the hops.

Hop flavors come through as well with a bitter taste showing off the IBUs. Perhaps some of the alcohol is showing on this pour as well. Fairly dry in the mouth as well.

Overall, a very good IPA that focuses on the hop bitterness and does well doing so.

Consumed at Kalamazoo beer exchange. Rating from notes.

A & S: hazy orange colored beer. Small off-white head. A bit of lacing. Strong grapefruit (my work collage says it smells like yellow/white grapefruit vs pink grapefruit), and floral hops scents.

T & M: mid taste is a piney hop explosion, it has a great kick. finish is semi dry and bitter. Not a lot going on as far as I can tell as far as malt profiles go. On the sweet side of the IPA. Not very complex, but its what I look for in IPA’s. Medium to full bodied, with medium carbonation. It has that great combo of smooth but crisp.

O: Overall a damn good beer. No huge problems with this one, and my favorite out of the Short’s beers I’ve tried thus far. To explain more about some of my rating selections, I’m only giving it a 4 for taste because I didn’t think it was well balanced. I look for this kind of beer to drink, however if I were rating without bias I would say that there are a few parts of this beer that don’t make it world class (balance and complexity). So that’s my reasoning behind the 4 instead of something higher.

A: looks like an IPA aught to. Sserved without much head but presented with a deep amber color.
S: more than good hop aroma!
T: tastes like I'm drinking hops
M: actually it's thinner than expected for 140 IBUs and it's well balanced with just enough malt but not too much for an IPA
O: I ordered another; enough said

A - Great puffy foamy head. Murkey orange. Nice little lacing remains.

S - Very malty with lemon and ginger scents... Not your typical IPA. Very light aroma.

T - Very unique IPA flavor profile... Very wet and sweet at the front and extremely bitter and dry at the end...

M - Very foamy and light bodied. Perfect carbonation! Carbonation is well done for an IPA.

D - Difficult. Not the most flavorful and smooth, but very unique. Different taste for an IPA, yet still enjoyable! Much different on-tap then bottled. Recommended forsure.

On tap at Grand Trunk in Detroit.
Appearance - Amber coloured with creamy, long-lasting head.
Aroma - Predominantly hoppy. Aromas are grapefruit and pine, some sweet malt in the back.
Flavour is primarily bitter; grapefruit with malt always in the background, but present. Finish is very bitter and hoppy, with a lingering, almost raw, hops flavour.

Tap at the Pizza House in East. Reviewing from memory - I had it a week ago, which qualifies as ancient history for me. I'm a bit of a hop-weeny, but found this to be a terrific IPA which had plenty of bite, but not an aftertaste that follows you around. Very good beer, I'll have it again.

Poured about 14 oz. out of my home tap system into a snifter.

A- Poured a dark amber with about a quarter inch of white head.

S- A beautiful aroma of a heavy dosage and wide variety of hops.

T- As expected lots of hops. There is however and slight hint of malt in the background, which, no doubt contributes to the 6.7% ABV.

M- Good carbonation (Set at 5 PSI). I can definitely feel the bitterness on my tongue.

D- I cannot drink too much of this beer consecutively.

On-tap.

Pours a clear and deep copper color with a 1.5-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth pale and caramel malts with large amounts of herbal and pine hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although the hop presence is slightly more muted. Sticky caramel malt flavors lightened by moderate amounts of pale malts kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are equal amounts of herbal and pine hops. Midway through the sip the hop influence lightens up a bit and soft citrus flavors make a brief appearance. The citrus hops fade out near the end of the sip, allowing the malt and herbal hops to carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this remains a nicely done IPA. The herbal notes were more prevalent in the tap version, perhaps the beer was younger and the freshness made them more pronounced. Either way, a solid beer that's worth a shot.

Not as much head as expected for a draft, but it could be the bartender's technique. What head is there quickly migrates to the edge, leaving a fine mist of bubbles on the surface. An orange-amber color, the brew has just a slight bit of haze -- enough to indicate its unfiltered manufacture.

Fresh hops defines the aroma. Unmistakable if you've ever stuck your nose in a bag of hop flowers.

The are followed up in the flavor. Fruity and feisty, like when you get a little squirt of grapefruit juice in your eye when peeling the skin off a grapefruit just picked from the grove. A real hop head's delight, the malts are hard to discern, but I'm sure they are in there somewhere beneath the overwhelming blast of bitterness from the hops. Subtle complexity from the grain bill adds an undercurrent of cereal flavors to provide some balance, and the draft carbonation smoothes things out a bit.

This beer would go well with a green olive and anchovy pizza, but would overpower foods with less pronounced flavors. Great for an IBU comparison tasting though.

A: heavy orange with the addition of golden hues and a dash of burnt yellow bronze color. Bleach white foam is above average, as well as the lacing. Some large sheets of lace exist and are clinging to my glass, loaded and laced

S: soft biscuity malts with an intensely strong citrus edge. Fruity orange notes run amuck with whiffs of pineapple. Some spiciness is hidden at the back of each continued whiff. All in all this possess a mighty hop presence in the nose

T: imagine a car. In the trunk the contents are toasted pale malts, caramel, some nuttiness, and maybe a sugar cookie. The passengers are all hops (oranges, pines, and grapefruits) while the car is fueled by oily alpha sticky goodness. Overall this is a potent hop vehicle. Continually bitter and snappy, a near tongue destroyer. Leave it to Short's to produce something so tasty and raw

M: medium body and ample bubbles proved perfect support for the wonderful palate of flavors. This is quickly turning into one of my all time favorite IPAs

D: simply wonderful
