Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

THIS BEER IS HUGE!!! LOVE IT! Tons of Hops, so beware if that’s not your bag. Lots going on with the variety of hops used along with the pine and citrus, so it kicks you in the teeth and makes you think at the same time. Tastes great in the bottle but if you see it on tap jump on it. One great beer. (302 characters)

Thanks to shamrock for sending this my way!

Great looking IPA - hazy honey gold body with a creamy finger of paper white head that laces perfectly, tons of tiny beading from beginning to end.

Some dank citrus type hops, sweet corn malts, faint conifer presence, nice and balanced.

Not as rich as the nose would suggest... hops are muted to an abstract bitterness, malts are pleasant though and actually do fine with the citrus peel bite, which makes for a clean finish. (472 characters)

A mouthful of hops with a totally bitter aftertaste. Pours an orangey amber in the glass. Hugely fragrant with a variety of hops, from flowery to piney.

Serious hop overdose. It's hard to rate this, since it seems so extreme. Resins and something medicinal. This might actually be a good hop concentrate to spice up that case of macro brews. A little oily and sharp in the mouth. Acidic, really. Hot and all hops, all the time. I have to go back to the old "Drinkability" rating and call it "not." Strictly for the those seeking the lash of the Hop Mistress.

Half finger head with excellent lacing on a golden with orange hues body which is slightly hazy. Excellent tropical fruit, grapefruit and candied pear citrus aroma. Hoppy flavors follow with more candied fruit with mild tart and citrus bitterness up front with fairly strong pine resin bitter finish. Malts are relatively bland and are mostly in the background. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not bad. The flavors are a bit disorganized in this one which disrupts its complexity. (486 characters)

12oz bottle received in trade with leafsj - thanks buddy!

Appearance - Hazy copper colour with an average size fizzy/frothy off-white coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes.

Smell - Malts, hops, grapefruit, pine

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste hops and malts mixed with caramel. There is also quite a bit of bitter resiny pine and grapefruit peel and pith. It ends with a bitter hoppy malty aftertaste.

Overall - A good dose of bitter hops but lacking in the fruity juiciness department. Still a great beer that I would drink again. Reminded me a bit of a Finest Kind IPA. (697 characters)

Selling the beer with high praise, the brewery makes some big statements on their label. The focus on the hop flower yields the gripping citrusy bitterness of the cone with supple support.

Medium to dark gold in color, the beer boasts a mild hoppy haze and a frothy white head of great staying power and broken rings of lace as the beer fades. It's a fine looking IPA that doesn't steer from the visual path very much.

The forefront of hops is evident in the nose. Grapefruit, oranges, and fresh-cut grass allow for an citrus and herbal display that seduces the olfactory senses with sharpness and mouth whetting effect. A brief search for malts yeilds a light scent of baking bread and mild caramel.

The one-sided balance that the nose promises is met with taste. Hop flavor starts juicy and citrusy as the supple sweetness of malt gives the fruit flavors a plumper and juicier impression of taste. As the beer traverses over the middle palate, the sharpness of citrus grows, the malt sweetness recedes further, and the grassy herbal notes rise. A malty-dry finish of muddled grasses, pine resin, and citrus pith spearhead the throat-gripping bitterness that the label suggested.

Medium in body at first, the carbonation and crusty malt lift and the dryness of hops, alcohol, and malt memory deliver a quick and fleeting finish except for a lingering citrus bitterness that crispens heading into the next taste.

If I were a craft beer enthusiast of ten years ago, this would have likely been the showpiece for hopcentric beers, similar to Goose Island's IPA and Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin'. But in today's combative IPA world, this one may get lost in the shuffle. (1,671 characters)

Reviewed blind, thanks to abraxel...

A: Pours a translucent gold with yellow hues. There is a full two fingers of head that take forever to settle. Massive lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is pine, malt, and a lot of vegetal funk. It smells like an old IPA. I even get a touch of onion in here. It's a bit off-putting.

T: This beer is sweet to start but then it turns to onion and old vegetation. It tastes muddy and funky. Honestly, this is pretty unpleasent. It sweetens back up in the finish and nothing lingers for too long.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet and weird to start. It gets a bit nasty in the middle and finishes sweet again.

O: Not a fan of this at all. Either this is old, or it's just bad. There was way too much old vegetal taste for my liking. (770 characters)

poured from bottle into a pint glass. Pours a hazy orange/gold color with a nice head.

fresh with resiny aromas of pine cones, hops, navel oranges and loads of citrus. Nice depth to the aromas as well.

medium/full bodied with a very good feel. Balanced with very good flavors of hops, citrus, navel oranges and some resin flavors on the back end.

This is a real quality IPA. The hops are certainly there, but it's well done in a hop forward style. (452 characters)

One of the better IPAs I've ever had.

Picked it up in Michigan since I don't get them in Illinois. No expiration date found on the bottle.

Not much malt in the aroma (no complaints there). Surprisingly low hops there, but still smells wonderful.

Beautiful amber color. Low head, minimal lacing. Very clear.

Great bitterness-not overly so like some IPAs. Must be some great malt backing it up. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Finishes dry, which I like.

Overall, I really like this beer. I think it's a great representation of the American IPA style. I would definitely buy it again. (586 characters)

Bought a new liter stein so I thought I'd christen it with this

A: a clear gold-orange color with minimal light head and not much lacing

S: hops, and alot of it too , very strong aroma

T: bread, malts, grain, citrus and hop loaded, very strong after taste.

M: mild amount of carbonation, very smooth, with strong after taste

O: Not much of a fan of IPAs, the hops are usually too over bearing for me, but not this one. There is a strong presence of hops both before and after but its not offensive, which is surprising to me for being an IPA, a pleasant surprise from one of my favorite breweries. (603 characters)

Thanks to ncketchum for the bottle. I poured this one into a CBS snifter. It was served slightly chilled.

A) Hazy orange brew with virtually no head. Perhaps I could have been more assertive with the pour. A little spotty lacing on the snifter.

S) Tropical fruits, light pine, and just a little alcohol. This was a nice aroma...

T) Ripe pineapple, citrus zest, bready/malty sweetness, a little alcohol warmth, finishes with a little orange rind.

M) Solid medium body with a fair amount of carbonation. This was quite smooth. The rind and alcohol cling a bit, but it works.

O) Enjoyable... Easily my favorite Short's offering, at least from what I've been able to try thus far. I have no reservations about recommending this brew. (734 characters)

Appearance- pours a very nice straw/golden color. Has a very light haze to it. Nice one finger head that dissipates quickly after the first few sips. Nice thin lacing head continues throughout.

Smell- strong notes of pine from the hops with a strong backbone of light Carmel malts.

Taste- light pine leading into big hops and biscuit, finishes with a strong bitterness.

Mouthfeel- strong carbonation with a medium heavy body

Overall- with the amount of hops and malt in this beer I would blindly think it would be a double/imperial. I thought it was a great well done beer and def deserves a try. It's something I could go back to

- After 2 years of drinking craft beer regularly this is finally my first review! Cheers. (725 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at fridge temperature.

L – Pale amber color with a 2-finger white frothy head. Really nice retention and good lacing. Clear with a good amount of carbonation.

S – This is a hop bomb for sure. A strong hop presence with grapefruit, orange, and mango aromas. There’s maybe a little bit of bready, caramel malt, but this belongs to the hops.

T – Starts off sweet with bready malt and citrus flavors and then almost instantaneously morphs into a bitter monster with a blast of grapefruit, orange, mango, and a little bit of pine hops. This is an intensely bitter IPA.

F – Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a sticky and chewy mouthfeel, and a very bitter and dry finish. Bitter grapefruit lingers for a great amount of time.

O – This is a deliciously bitter IPA. Short’s doesn’t lie when they say this has 140 IBU. This really tastes like a DIPA. I’m impressed that they packed so much bitterness into a single IPA. Due to the intensely bitter flavor that seems to build forever, the drinkability suffers a little, but this beer is so enjoyable that it’s probably better to sip on it anyway. Great beer from Short’s. I’ll be looking for more from them in the future. (1,231 characters)

One of the first brews I ever had from Short's. Nice, golden color with a thin white head that leaves a decent amount of lacing on the way down. Putting your nose in the glass is like smelling a forest - lots of hops, resin, and some pine smells here, not too much citrus, but it is definitely there. The beer tastes just like it smells - full on hops and bitterness right from the get-go. Lots of floral flavors jump out, not much malt, but the bitterness is never "unbalanced". The citrus actually comes out quite a bit more on the palate than it does in the nose, making for a nice counter-point to the bitterness of the hops. Plenty of carbonation gives a nice mouthfeel and crispness, however, it's still pretty sticky on the palate in the finish.

Very good IPA with plenty of hoppy tones and flavors, sure to please any hop head. Although I feel there are many IPA's that are superior, I would definitely have this one again. Solid brew from Shorts. (956 characters)

Pours a great looking IPA. Burnt orange color with a bit of haze. A mild amount of carbonation creates a thin white head that laces throughout the drink.
Smell is great. All kinds of different hop smells: flowery, citrus, and dominant Earthy hops.
Taste has a lot going on. Very strong earthy and piney hops, but not much to balance it.
Mouthfeel is very sharp, not much smoothness or balance.
Drinkability is okay. A lot of really nice hop tastes, but not much more besides that going on. Could only drink about one of these before the hops start to hurt my mouth... (568 characters)

Pours a nice golden color, beautiful for an IPA. Not much topper - maybe a finger's worth of foam. Leaves a light lacing as I drink.

Smell is slightly above average for an IPA. What everyone else is saying is true: citrus fruits, maybe some hints of tropical fruits like pineapple or starfruit.

Hits first with the fruit, then with the bitter. A malty backbone fools you at first - you think this beer will finish smooth and malty. But THEN the bitterness wallops once again. Fantastic hopiness for an IPA, so all you hopheads out there will like if not love Huma. It may be slightly TOO bitter and too little complex for my tastes.

Carbonation level is too high.

Overall, a nice, sessionable IPA, though if you're not a fan of hoppy bitterness, you will not be able to sip on more than one of these in a row. (816 characters)

Served chilled in a Duvel tulip

A- pours a clear light orange with minimal head, lots of carbonation

S - lots of sweet citrus hops along with an undertone of chocolate that follows, confusing the heck out of me

T - loads of bitter hops initially, more bitter than the nose would suggest. Instead of chocolate, I get a nice malty backbone

M - fairly thin, good amount of carbonation, little alcohol to speak of

O - very good initial offering from Shorts for me. Would definitely have this one again (502 characters)

I've been trying a lot of "okay" beers lately, so I'm pulling out the huma in the hopes I'll get something powerful. Plus I want to see how it is compared to the draft I had.

Decent. Still has some strong hop tones, but the subtle hop characteristics seem to have departed us. Seems to lean more towards a one dimensional ride. I mean, in all fairness, the pint I had on-tap was so fresh it had probably been kegged a week or even a few days prior. I mean, how can you beat that. (480 characters)

A - pours a golden, clear yellow with a billowing white head that settles down to a nice thin layer that leaves nice lacing down the glass.

S - smell is citrusy, fruity, hoppy. Nice.

T - opens up with juicy citrus flavors that move on to a caramel malt back bone. However the malts are pushed aside by a load of more grapefruit and citrus hops that with a little bit of piney bitterness to finish this one off. Very nice, bold IPA.

M - mouthfeel is watery, full, and smooth

D - overall, this is a really nice IPA. Big and bold with lots of citrusy hop flavors with a little bit of a malt bill that's keeps it from being an all out hop bomb. I will have to go pick up a sixer of this before I leave the state. (715 characters)

12oz bottle poured into Founders snifter. Thanks to makdeco for picking this one up for me.

A- Pours a nice hazy orange golden brown with a very thin layer of white bubbly head that quickly recedes to leave almost no head. Slightly below average carbonation.

S- Not as hoppy as some IPAs but still a decent amount. Pleasant tropical fruity aromas of oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, lemons, pine, and some light caramel malts in the background. Slightly above average aroma strength.

T- Bitter hops, oranges, mangoes, pineapple, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits. Finishes with a lightly bitter, lightly spiced, citrusy juice flavor. Decently well balanced.

M- Nice carbonation, juicy, easy to drink.

O- This beer was a nice IPA that was easy to drink. Had nice mixed tropical fruits in the aroma and taste. I thought there was a tiny bit of a plasticy artificial quality to it, which is why I couldn't rate it higher. It wasn't anything that made the taste that bad. Overall this is my first beer from Short's and I'm impressed. I look forward to drinking this again and trying some of their other beers. (1,109 characters)

Slightly hazed amber color with a flash head and no lacing.
The nose is intensely floral with smaller amounts of pine and citrus. The flavor is boiled pine resin-centric and much less floral than the nose, although it does contain plenty of musty earth flavor. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation, smooth texture... and a very long extended pithy finish. It's a powerful and straightforward boiled hops freight train of alpha acids crashing into my palate. This bittering hop bomb doesn't really even bother trying to balance things out with the malt very well...and for that I score it lower than other similar bitterness level brews that did so with much more balance and intricacy. (681 characters)

Poured to a nice two fingered head that was offwhite in color. Ale itself was brownish golden in color. Left some nice lacing with every swallow. Had that piney, hoppy, malt smell going on. Tastes of pine, hops, and malt. Had a little bit of bitter aftertaste that was stronger than I liked. Aftertaste hung around for a while. Felt good in the mouth. I thought the carbonation was right. Overall I thought it was a good brew by Shorts. Id buy again. (450 characters)

Bought a couple of 6 packs during a quick trip to Michigan. It wasn't quite as good as what I remembered from 3 years ago, but it is a fine beer. It is massively hopped, but it has enough malt to up the alcohol and overall flavor. A long-time favorite beer that didn't disappoint. (280 characters)
