American IPA |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

I’ve had this on-tap, from a bottle, and now (this review) direct from the source, via growler.

This pours with a warming amber-caramel glow.

I get a combination of citrus and orange peel in the aroma. It has a forward bitterness which lasts and finishes dry, with flavors of orange peel and an intense citrus character dominating.

This poured a nice dark golden color that was a little hazy. It had a big frothy white head on it that left a good amout of lacing on the glass. It smells of hops, citrus, and maybe a little bit of orange. The hops hit you right away with this beer. They are nice and strong. There is some maltiness in the middle that cuts some of the hops, but it still leaves a bit of a lingering bitterness on the tongue. The mouthfeel is good, its nice and creamy with good carbonation and a medium body. The drinkability is very good on this beer, I finished my growler with ease. Looking forward to having another growler filled with this hoppy goodness.

Had more than a few of pints at the brewpub and decided to bring a growler home for one obvious reason....its delicious!

Has a beautiful foamy head, lots of lacing and very good retention. A hazy yellowish orange color.

Smells of grapefruit, pine and a biscuity maltiness.

Tastes great, loads of hop bitterness, grapefruit, pine and some malt to back things up. I really did enjoy this IPA, very drinkable.

From some notes I quickly jotted down.

Small one-finger head with a little lacing. Very citrusy and floral. The nose is vibrant on this one. Slightly sweet malt and a dry finish with enormous hop flavor. Balance is toward the bitter end for an IPA.

Very good stuff. I hope to be able to purchase this in bottle form soon as it would be a welcome addition to my IPA rotation.

Picked up a growler on my first visit to HopCat in GR. Worth the trip and the purchase. This is a great example of why I love IPAs.

A-Golden amber/copper color, fairly transparent. Heavy head on a hard pour in to a mug fit for a bomber. Lacing from top to bottom.

S-Very citrusy and floral. Combo of hops and alcohol stings the nostrils slightly. Well balanced.

T-Again, very well balanced. The bitterness of the hops does not overpower the full flavor of this beer. The citrus cools the palette nicely.

M-Sticky and good. Flavor sticks to all areas of the tongue and mouth, leaving a nice reminder of the beer.

D-Being an IPA lover, I would drink this all day, and yesterday I did. I only wish I had another growler to put back.

Poured from a growler obtained at Short's brew pub on 7/30/08, into my brand new Short's Imperial Pint Glass.

A: Very cloudy, orangish green. The bartender explained that they were selling a "shitload" of the stuff lately, so that was why it had almost a green hue to it. Small amount of head that retained well and left great sticky lace.

A: Smelled of Big grass and citrus hops. Orange, grapefruit, and "hemp". There was a very distinct sweetness as well, maybe from honey?

T: Extrordinary! The hops are enormous, again, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and honey. The sweet malts balance this very nicely.

M&D: Medium body beer, nice level of carbonation, makes for a semi-creamy mouthfeel. As for the drinkability, I had planned to drink one or two glasses out of the growler with my grilled chicken that night, but I finished it before my brother-in-law could finish grilling. I can't wait for Joe Short to bottle this one. Just an outstanding IPA. Skal.

Pours a murky peach color with a small white head. Aroma is a nice citrusy hoppiness with some tangerines and grapefruits, malt backbone combines to include a sweet peach aroma. Flavor is big citrus esp tangerine with some grapefruit. Peach also comes thru but lighter in the taste than in the aroma. Big size bitterness in the finish with some pepperiness and decent amt of dryness. This beer is big for the style, alcohol isn't too over the top, but hop aromas and taste are big and bold and the bitterness is on the same level as some dipa's. Great beer that can fortunately be had locally, hopefully Short's other beers will see larger distribution in the future.

A very cloudy appearance with a dark-gold color. The pour makes a white 1 finger head. A very citrusy and a strong hop scent that resembles pine. Very bitter and sticks with you, defiantly an evening brew. The strong flavor and carbonation go hand in hand. Overall a great beer, and very well made. Unfortunly very similar to their "chatterbox" but I really enjoyed it!

A- Slightly cloudy, golden brown or a dirty orange/gold.
S- citrusy and maybe a slight caramel
T- Completely follows the aroma, has a bittersweet taste kinda fruity and a very strong aftertaste. Quite Lingering
M- Crisp, medium carbonation, easy downfall with strong after feel.
*My overall is defiantly a thumbs up! well suited for different occasion (for the people who enjoy higher IBU) -very good IPA.

Bottle (bought in MI over Thanksgiving). ). Unable to find bottle date

A: golden, orange cloudy brew. Light head with fair lacing

S: pine and some citrus. Light mango

M: nice lingering malt. Really nice

T: hop forward of course but less than I remember my guess is it's past it's prime a little. Solid fruit flavor though.

Overall well liked solid IPA if not outstanding. When in Michigan it's worth finding and easily found in most markets and brew stores. This sample was a little past prime as I rambler bolder hops when I first had a fresh one so Id better finish what I have left.

Having had this many a times I am very familiar with Short's year round IPA offering. Well suited for many occasions it poured rather uneventfully with not much of a head to speak of and or what it had vanished quickly. The nose on this one tonight had almost next to nothing but having had this plenty of times in the past I've come to expect and receive a very pleasant welcoming from it with plenty of citrus. On the tongue the first thing that hits you is the bitterness, if you prefer a smoother IPA than this will not be one for you. It is fairly well balanced with plenty of sweet and good body to offset the amount of bitterness that rides along for the entire journey. Color is golden brown and tends to stay hazy throughout.

Overall it's a very good IPA and stands up to any year round beer of the same style. It has been and will remain one of my go to beers that's perfect for almost any adventure I may find myself on.

Has a nice looking light copper color, though from the bottle I poured there wasn’t much of a head. The aroma is hops and the flavor is a ridiculous amount of hops. Finish is dry and there’s also some hints of floral sweetness. Has medium carbonation and a nice mouthfeel. Quite good.

Bottle into tulip

Appearance - Golden orange in color, about 1 finger white head, and just the slightest bit of haze.

Smell - Juicy tropical fruits, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, pineapple, and roasty undertones from the malts not heavy on alcohol.

Taste - Grapefruit, mango, pineapple at first, moving on to a light roastiness, and there is also an underlying pine flavor that also contributes a nice bitterness from start to finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, medium carbonation, refreshing and crisp.

Overall - Great beer to have available all the time. Shorts can certainly do no wrong with this beer.

I love this beer! Although I am sometimes turned off by heavily-hopped beers that don't have a good malt sweetness to balance the bitter, I am totally intrigued by the Huma. The exploding pine, citrus, grapefruit is so intense, and the bittering hops linger very pleasantly. Cheers to Short's, but please start distributing your goodness outside of Michigan.

This one is all about the bitter! If you like you ipas balanced or even malty at all...This is not your ale. I have trouble with many of Short ' s offerings but this is one that I greatly enjoy. The ale pours an orange golden color with a light white head that gives way to a nice lacing. The nose on this one is all hops; citrusy, piney, and bitter. The taste completely follows that aroma. Bitter from start to finish. At the same time it is light on the mouth and very fresh and refreshing. A great hop forward ipa. Would love to see what Short ' s could make of this as a double/imperial.

On-tap at Jacoby's in Detroit.

Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA has a super-duper classic look: toasty golden brown complexion, a thin and natural haziness, a trim head. Everything is far from shipshape, however; its foam splashes all over the glass and leaves drapes of lacing worthy of being hung in my living room.

Some varieties of hops impart such convincing and colourful fruit flavours that you'd swear you were drinking fruit juice; with this beer, however, it feels more like you're sucking on the bitter skin of the fruit (as oppose to chowing down on the sweet flesh). There's a lot of dry orange and grapefruit pith and the acidity of lemons. Plenty of tree resins too.

There is also - as the aroma made plainly apparent - a lot of caramelly malt to help counter those flavours. It completely relaxes the beer's ramped-up alpha-acids. The tastes of tree sap have a similar effect: their gooey, serum-y texture and pine-like notes combine with the lemony citrus oils to become a little bit 'soapy' but also a lot more agreeable.

The brewery must have figured out how to balance bitter and sweet right down to the hundredth decimal place; practitioners of piphilology may have found a new challenge. While caramel malt cruises through the aftertaste, flashbacks of hoppy resins are constant and vivid.

Huma-Lupa-Licious is a pretty fan-frickin-tastic IPA. Devout hopheads might consider it a little mellow while those still apprenticing in the alpha-acid arts are likely to find it a wee menacing, but there's more than enough resiny bitterness to please the former and just enough sweet maltiness to relieve the latter. An IPA suitable for everyone!

Bottle from trade. Amber pour with white head. Aroma is pungent pine, citrus. Taste is nice balance of traditional hop flavors - resin, orange, grapefruit. Malt helps to balance the sweetness. Lingering bitter finish.

One of the better Shorts offerings in my opinion. I look forward to this one every year.

This is the first time me drinking the Huma Lupa Licious. I picked a bottle up at Sicilianos in Grand Rapids, Michigan while making my own 6-pack. I have always preferred an IPA over about just anything. Although this is not on my best IPA list of 10, it is in the vicinity of about the 15th one.

A - A solid golden-orange color that has a quick dissipating head
S - A light citrus smell
T - A light taste of malt and a very strong hop presence is felt right away. Not enough to overwhelm but enough to know that there, the bitterness is very noticeable. This beer has double of some of my favorite IPA's
M - My tongue starts to tingle at first and then the taste of citrus comes in. A strong aftertaste of grapefruit remains in my mouth.
O - A very good IPA that holds its own to people who prefer the higher IBU rating. Not in the near future but I do see myself getting more of this beer.

Tasted 13 November 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours a medium pale orange. Hazy. One finger of off-white head, good retention, nice lacing.

Smell is packed with citrus and piney hops. It's got potent malt support, a fair amount of sweetness, and a touch of sweet orange that feels like it's coming from the malts; more like an orange muffin, topped with sugar, than the super citrusy acidic version.

Taste is medium-high bitterness, moderately chalky. A bit of the citrus comes through, especially about half-way through. Mostly it's a bitter blast.

Feel is good. Medium-bodied, really lasting. Dang, that bitterness just lingers on the edges of the tongue.

This is a big, hefty DIPA. I like it. It's not on the level of the best. But it's really quite good.

Amber hued with fantastic clarity. I get just a slight bit of head that covers most of the top of this beer. Intense tropical to citrus hop aroma. Perhaps a touch of orange soda in the nose?! That is an odd but hop forward flavor. I get the citrus hop bitterness with a strong light malt backbone, but the flavors seem to clash somehow. Texture is moderately carbonated and the bitterness pricks your tongue.

Well alright...Raul is diggin' this one quite well. Beginning thoughts are that it's gorgeous; like, it has the "pregnant glow" of a Victorias's Secret Angel. With that, are tropical layers of aroma and taste like Mozart on a Tahitian cruise, and it is balanced nice and well like Verde plucking malts in Malta. It isn't the most complex, and the main man would like a lil more bite at the end - we kind of have a two year old teething here - but Raul is into it well enough.

Hello, Michigan, welcome to the party.

M - 4.5 - Light-medium, alc covered, aftertaste is bitter grapefruit.

From a bottle into a pint glass. pours a little cloudy with a small head. The color is very orange. Smell is of citrus with a little bit of toasted malt. Taste is citrus up front, with a light pine touch. The toasted malt takes this one over as I get through the pint. Citrus has hints of lemon, grapefruit and something else I cannot put my finger on. The toasted malt taste is pretty strong after the first half of the glass. Very light and easy to drink with only a little aftertaste of the malt with a light amount of pine that does not last long.. Easier and a little smoother as it warmed in the glass. Decent IPA, I would like to try it on draft to see if more of the citrus flavor comes out in front of the toasted malt.
