Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Had on the patio at Legs Inn and the beer is every bit as good as the view. It’s all about the hops with citrusy resiny hop aromas lifting out of the glass as a hop hazed orange gold liquid rises under a thin white foam cap. Big malt holds together even bigger hops with a big citrus rind resiny herbal hop finish. Almost enough hops to enable you to walk without moving your feet. (383 characters)

Pours a hazy burnt orange with a nice 2" chalk white collar of foam. Not much on the nose here, even with a heavy pour and a lot of head. Feint citrus, but that's about it. The taste was also underwhelming with bland flavor. Mid to low carbonation in this one. Just not my cup of tea, I guess. I was really looking forward to trying this and ended up disappointed. (364 characters)

WOW!!!! Outstanding, I cannot believe that I found a year round beer that tops bells 2 hearted ale. they're out there but very few, and very far between. New go to beer. Definitely tops last years hopslams, maybe not the hopslams from the year before, but WOW... I'm absolutely pissed I got a single and not a 6 pack. (322 characters)

Wow thats a strong punch of hops in the mouth. HELLO! Ok, so... pours very nice hazy golden with a nice off white head that settles to a skim on the surface of the beer thru out. Sticky lacing also very nice. Smells of strong Hops and a Citrus/pine combination. Taste is defintly a wee heavy for me, bitter. Yet still I keep drinking, getn into IPAs little by little. But this ones a strong sucker WoW. If u like strong hops and tasty beer, go get you one of these bad boys!

Exceptional IPA with strong pine, citrus, and light spice hop aroma and taste. Generous bittering hop additions and a medium body balance very well, if you can take the up-front hop blast. (188 characters)

I don't understand all the hoopla about this beer. It's good. But I've been down this hop oil road before with much better results. A Torpedo or Centennial is cheaper and better. (178 characters)

Had this on tap in the Detroit airport. Nice light Amber color with ok head, minimal retention, very light lacing. Aroma was a bit of an earthy skunky flavor and the flavor followed. Not bad but I am not sure how fresh my beer was. Had it a second time and enjoyed much better. First try was definitely old. Scores upgraded accordingly (341 characters)

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/29/2014. Pours hazy bright orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, sticky, and slightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around great complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering. (1,381 characters)

Deliciously crisp IPA that offers a lot of floral citrus notes. It's quite bitter and perhaps a little less malty than some of the sweeter IPA's. This really allows the different flavors of the hops to shine through. (218 characters)

Served in a pint glass. Bottled on 11/03/2014.

Pours a nice orange with 1 finger of soapy white head the dissipates leaving a thin ring around the edges. Wonderful aromas of juicy grapefruit, pineapple upside down cake, oranges, and shortbread. Taste is malty upfront almost cake like then finishes with a piney hop bitterness that lingers slightly. Light body with a hint of carbonation.

Overall a top notch brew. A staple IPA for hopheads. Its up there with some of the best IPA's the midwest has to offer.

Cheers! (525 characters)

Draft pour at Stella’s in GR. The nose is pine and sticky resin. A hoppy hoppy IPA that veers into hopslam style territory in bitterness but with less sweetness and restraint. Truly a favorite for hopheads - definitely not a beer to take lightly. Good stuff from Shorts (271 characters)

9-13-14. Bottle. Water goblet.

A: pours a somewhat hazy golden amber. 1/4" frothy off-white head. Outstanding lacing. Small, visible effervescence. Decent retention, small thin cap.

S: Grapefruit; slightly tropical; slight sweetness.

T: Bitter arrival; lighter in body and taste than expected. Quite refreshing, surprisingly. Malty presence across mid-palate, but no sweetness. Tight, bitter finish.

M: Solidly mid weight. Good carbonation, not excessive.

O: Really excellent west-coast style IPA, in my book. (514 characters)

A: Copper filtered with tinge of haze, 4 fingers of off white yellowish head leaving a chunky lacing.

S: Caramel, orange candy, pine, toasted malty quality, slight medicinal.

T: Flavour profile dances in the mouth. The malt quality reminds me of London Pride, lots of orange candy and pine, a bitterness that dances like sunshine through pine trees. Light sweetness, a little honey.

M: Medium body, little carbonation.

O: Excellent brew. Got this in Frankenmuth near the beginning of my trip in North America, drinking it the last day here, though the flavour profile still shines. New Hamburg, Aug 26th, 2014. (622 characters)

Bottle > Standard Pint

A - Hazed gold with two fingers of fluffy soapy off white head, thick lacing
S - Very very floral, some light fruit notes of orange and other citrus, grassy, slightly earthy, pine, cracker malt.
T - Extremely floral in flavor as well, mid way you get some bold bitterness, bitey pine, spicy hop resin, lightly sweet malt notes, just solid.
M - Super easy to put down for 7.7%, even though there's a serious bitterness, it kinda mellows out after a while.
O - Very impressed by this beer, one of the more floral IPA's I've had, and its just great to drink, balanced and flavorful. (606 characters)

Last of my beers courtesy of Newman

Brilliantly clear, on the gold/amber bolder, but fairly pale. Pours a nice tight head, creamy and with nice retention.

Rich hop aroma, more on the pine side. Has some malty notes in support to balance out the aroma. Sampling fairly cold, but feel like their might be a little alcohol just out of reach in the nose.

Wow, hops! Big, solventy but not overpowering hop flavor, a piney/earthy flavor with a hint of nuttiness. I know the malt is there, but it is buried under the hops. Hop bitterness in the finish is intense yet somehow smooth.

Borderline tongue scraper in terms of hop bitterness on the tongue, but not overly astringent. Some definite warming, not out of line for the style. Medium-full body and medium carbonation.

A really expertly crafted beer. How it could be so hoppy without much in the way of harshness was impressive to me. The nature of the hop flavor isn't my personal favorite, but they used the hops to maximum advantage. (988 characters)

12 oz. bottle picked up as a single in Port Huron; no apparent freshness info. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a murky brownish-amber colour, topped with one finger of soapy white froth that dissipates over the next few minutes. It eventually thins into a lumpy cap and collar, with some loose bands of lacing scattered around the glass. Very enticing aroma - citrusy grapefruit and mandarin orange are quite prominent, in addition to notes of mango and pine sap, underlain with a malty caramel sweetness.

A good, strong IPA. The backbone consists of toasted malts and toffee, providing just enough substance to keep the (far more aggressive) hop bill in check. Lots of pine and grapefruit pith notes comes through, with a candied orange flavour toward the finish, as the citrusy and boozy elements begin to blend. Bitter, resiny aftertaste that lingers. On the more viscous side of medium-bodied, with a somewhat oily, slick mouthfeel in spite of the moderately assertive carbonation. This is a full-flavoured, bitter IPA with a modest alcohol kick, which limits its drinkability.

Final Grade: 4.06, an A-. I enjoyed this bottle of Short's Humalupalicious IPA, certainly enough to consider picking it up again in the future. Working under the assumption that this is a fresh bottle (since it doesn't taste off or otherwise stale), this is an excellent, hoppy strong ale that all hopheads within Short's distribution range should consider well worth a look. Great stuff. (1,473 characters)

Poured on draft in Detroit airport.

A: Golden honey yellow with two finger white head and average lacing.

S: Grapefruit, pine, and a touch of honey.

T: Bitter hops mixed with some citrus and malt sweetness.

M: Medium body leaving some oily hop resin. Crisp dry finish.

O: Very good IPA, very much hop forward. I'm not sure this was the freshest keg, and would like to find a good fresh bottle. (398 characters)

I love IPA's and this one is truly among the best I have ever tried. The entire experience consuming this wonderful IPA fulfilled all of my expectations. I'm sorry I have not sampled it before now.
This IPA has a crisp and clean mouth feel enhanced by the flowery notes of the hops. The aromatics from the unique hops used in this IPA satisfy from start to finish as the brew travels across your pallet. Huma-Lupa-Licious hits the IPA sweet spot with a perfect malt canvas to facilitate a wonderful hoppy experience.
This brew is an instant favorite for me to revisit frequently. Also, another Michigan quality brew. (616 characters)

Huma is from Shorts Brewery in Bellaire.

The best way to describe this beer is... Hops on Hops on Hops! The pour is a cloudy dark gold, and smells strongly of pine needles. Huma is a strong IPA, and deservedly is one of the best IPAs in the State of Michigan. The head lasts for a decent amount of time, and the finish is crisp and sharp. It is extremely bitter, but has a citrusy after taste. Huma Lupa is advertised as having a good balance with the malt, which I did not think at first, but upon second tasting it is a very well balanced IPA.

drinkability: As with most IPAs excluding sessions, I do not think I could drink more than two of these beers without a spinning head and burned out tongue. A great beer, in small quantities.

A very bitter and hoppy India Pale Ale. Leaves a bit of a hoppy aftertaste which characterizes many IPAs. Golden hazy orangish color when poured with a white head. This beer has a hint of grapefruit which is overpowered by the hops. There is minimal malt presence. Overall, I would highly reccomend this beer by Shorts (318 characters)

Probably may favorite India pale ale. It is very well balanced with a great hoppy taste that complements many types of dinners. A lot of IPAs taste the same to me, but this one tends to stand out and the creative name probably helps. I tend to prefer this in the summer even over fruiter and lighter beers. (306 characters)
