Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Barely legible date on the bottle of 1/17/13. Here's hoping that's 'bottled on' and not 'enjoy by.'

Appearance: A nice bright orange and completely opaque. Poured a two finger marshmallowy off-white head that has dissipated some leaving nice lacing.

Aroma: Sweet sugary barley notes as well has a somewhat dank hop aroma. Like a mixture of pine and earth with citrus/grass buried underneath it all.

Taste: Starts with a building bitterness that has moments of high intensity (120+ IBUs is actually believable here). Mostly a grassy hop flavor that leaves something to be desired. The sweetness from the aroma is nowhere to be found in the taste which really lacks the balance to rein those hops in. That being said, it's really not bad. At 6.9% ABV there is definitely some malt involved in the making of this brew but it is very hard to detect under the massive dose of bitterness. Slightly dry finish and a quinine-like bitterness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Just under medium in body with average carbonation and good drinkability despite the hop coma it inflicts on your palate.

Final Thoughts: As a hop head I'm always looking for the most bitter and flavorful IPAs out there. Huma Lupa Licious delivers on the bitterness without a doubt. I wish I had a fresh bottle to find out if it has more hop flavor to give than the grassy character I experienced. Would I drink it again? I'm not seeking it out.

Picked this up on a road trip to MI. Seems pretty fresh. It was a little steep for a sixer (11.50) but its pretty good overall. The only thing I've had from Short's Brew and it definitely makes a good impression on me.

Smell (4.00) - Big hop aroma right off the bat. Slight sweetness reminds me of honey. You can almost taste the bitterness in the smell. Maltiness is coming across as well.

Appearance (4.25) – From a 12oz to a Matilda glass. One finger lemony white head. Deep yet hazy golden yellow with tons of carbonation coming to the top. You can see slight amounts of sediment swirling around. Lacing is pretty nice overall.

Taste (4.00) – Huge hop crunch right on the front. Bitter grapefruit and lemon are prevalent but pine is definitely the main attraction. Bitterness lasts well into the finish where slight caramel notes make an appearance. I don't get a ton of malty complexion like advertised on the bottle.

Mouthfeel (4.00) – Bitterness and carbonation zonk the thirst out of you. If you swirl it in your mouth you can get a slight alcohol bite, but otherwise the alcohol is well hidden. The beer kind of lays in the back of the throat after the finish.

Overall (4.00) – If you're a hop nut like myself and want a satisfying crunch, this one delivers. It leaves a bit to be desired in terms of complexity but is still very pleasing overall. The main thing with this beer is the heavy pine taste that lasts throughout. Satisfying and I'm glad I have a sixer to enjoy.

Review from Fall 2012

A: Amber in color, quite cloudy from accidentally pouring in the bottle sediment. Fairly creamy looking white head on top. Lacing is quite good.

S: Some pine and maybe some buiscuty malts in there. Not much else going on.

T: This is a beer taste experience quite unlike anything else ive had before. Not in a good way either. Upfront, i basically get no taste. Like the beer is using some sort of cloaking device to pass over my tongue and get down my throat without leaving any delicious hop goodness behind. All that is left for my dumbfounded taste buds is an aftertaste flavor decoy consisting of raw IBUs and some resin.

M: Not that great. Fairly thin and sort of bubbly

O: One of my biggest beer disappointments to date. From this bottle I cannot understand its high rating. I love hop bitterness, but there must be good flavors to accompany that. Perhaps the sediment through the whole beer out of whack, but I feel like there really wasn't enough of it to accomplish that. A let down overall.

Starts with a modest head and settles to a thick ring with some inconsequencial minute bubbles in the center. Leaves ring lace after each sip. Mild haze on the golden color.

Mild starting aroma. Shows good balance.

The flavor is surprizingly bitter given the smell. Highly carbonated with a strong white pepper swallow. The body is as one might expect for an IPA. Long lingering bitter aftertaste.

Bottle poured into a stein.

A-Pours a cloudy orange-gold with a slice of creamy white head that quickly fades.

S-Melon and sweet caramel, light roast biscuit, faint hops and floral notes.

T-Taste does not follow smell. You are hit with fresh hops followed by citrus zest, biscuit roast and very light caramel sugary sweet. The after taste is all bitter hops so beware to those among us who are not hop heads.

M-Light to medium body with smooth resinous feel and lightly carbonated.

O-Very solid IPA. It stays true to its name and gives you a very hoppy experience without any other overwhelming flavor distracting the palate. I definitely recommend to fans of IPAs.
