Notes & Commercial Description:

Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

LOOK: Pours a light copper color with a white soapy froth that retains very well. Good clarity and impressive lacing on the pint glass.
SMELL: Grapefruit is heavy on the nose. A hint of biscuit and herb and floral. Mainly grapefruit. Toasted malt.
TASTE: Earthy and piney upfront with a rooty hop profile. Lemon zest and herb dial in strongly. Green tea and citrus. Pale malt backing.
FEEL: Medium bodied feel, high carbonation, with a dry grapefruit bite.
OVERALL: A delicious IPA with big grapefruit notes. Solid brew all in all.

I’ve had this on-tap, from a bottle, and now (this review) direct from the source, via growler.

This pours with a warming amber-caramel glow.

I get a combination of citrus and orange peel in the aroma. It has a forward bitterness which lasts and finishes dry, with flavors of orange peel and an intense citrus character dominating.

12oz bottle served in a pint glass

A - Pours a glowing orange color with a 2 finger head that holds its ground and provides exceptional lacing.

S - Earthy grass, spicy grapefruit, dank herbal notes, sharp and peppery. Small hints of malt aroma.

T - Follows the nose with with juicy citrus, dank herbal, and sticky green hops. The hops are spicy and green showcasing solid bitterness. Light caramel malt shows up but the hops punish with a dry grassy bitterness. Finishes herbal and dry.

M - Medium carbonation and body, crisp and sharp feel, very dry finish.

The first beer from Short's and I have to say well done. This is a no holds bar full flavored IPA with copious amounts of bitterness. A dry crisp inish closes out very nice. Glad I got a chance to try this.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. Cheers to Spartan13 for this excellent extra!

A: Pours a hazy copper color. A semi-vigorous pour yields an initial finger-and-a-half of bone-white, frothy head, which subsides fairly quickly to a stubborn sudsy collar. Spotty but strongly retentive lacing. Light amounts of visible carbonation.

S: ...not what I was expecting at first, to be honest. The initial nose is quite malty--bready sweetness, caramel, even a touch of honey. This malty character is quickly eclipsed, however, by the expected wave of citric hop assault: bitter orange, grapefruit, and POWERFUL pine. Spicy hop flavors rear their head as well. Some sweeter notes display themselves alongside the bitter citrus and spice, but they are very subdued.

T: Powerfully hoppy. As many others have noted, bitter piney hops are the star, with lighter notes of grapefruit and lemon accompanying the piney hop assault. The middle of the mouthful offers the slightest touch of bready malt for balance before the finish brings the pine center-stage again. The piney bitterness lingers long after the beer itself is gone.

M: Medium-bodied, oily and resinous. A pleasant level of carbonation prevents this beer from becoming tongue-coatingly slick.

O: The hoppiest and bitterest beer I've had to date, for sure. A bit one-dimensional on the surface, perhaps, but notes other than the initial pine pungency ARE there, and they greatly enhance the character of this beer when they can be found beneath the assault of bitter pine. As noted, the nose is also fairly unique among IPAs that I've consumed. A very solid beer, and definitely a must-try for hardcore hopheads.
