Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a stemmed tulip glass

A: A golden copper color and a touch hazy. Pours to 1-2 fingers of thick head settling to a frothy collar and leaving behind a good amount of lacing.

S: First notes are of sweet malt (the nose has a big malt character); next are those wonderful American bittering hops (spicy and floral) with a bit of fruit in the background but not much.

T: Again, the initial flavor is dominated by malt, sweet and caramel, followed closely by a big punch of spicy and floral bitter hops with a bit of pine. The finish is very long and very, very dry. For my taste, there was too much emphasis on the hop profile and as one nears the end of the beer, my palate is feeling beat-up from hops.

M: Medium body and carbonation; full, creamy, round.

O: Nice malt character in the nose and taste but the finish is overly bitter, to the point of biting and ultimately pulls the beer out of balance. Some see this as a positive and to you hop-heads I say, this Huma’s for you!!

poured 12oz bottle into snifter

A - Hazy light copper orange with a 1.5 finger white head. Minimal retention and a few spots of lacing.

S - Bitter pine hops with floral and earthy hops. Hints of citrus can be found, but they take a back seat to the pine. I get some light bready malt.

T - Starts off with a punch of oily, piney, bitter hops. Buried under all those hops are notes of citrus, earthy, and light bready malts. Finish is, surprise, bitter.

M - Slick and oily with a medium body. Carbonation is light. Bitter lingers for some time on teh palate.

O - A bitter, piney, hopped up IPA. Good, but not unique.

Poured a mildly hazy orange amber gold, with a creamy white head, and really pleasant lacing and film. 4

S – a lively floral character out of the glass, with lavender, citrusy lemon and orange. Some bready malt background, some subtle spice, and a rich oily hop character. Comes through with a bit of herbalness, all about the hops. 4

T – a bracing hop character. Dry herbs, olive oil, pungent lemon citrus, and a big hit of resiny pine as well as tobacco. Not much fruity about this initially, but some melon and grapefruit emerge, to start a big kick of strong resiny hops, with bready malt to balance it out nicely to the long full finish with a spicy hop kick. Strong citrus but enough of a firm body to provide an amply counterpoint. Highly flavourful for sure but also tons of complexity. 4

M – an initial strong effervescence, then a slick hoppy oiliness takes over and coats the palate. A big slick dry finish which leaves a coating resinous pininess and hop character. Drinkable and a big oily hoppy character that lingers on nicely. Refreshing and the components are put together quite nicely. 4.25

This is a wild in-your-face IPA. Tons of hop character emerging in all forms, and it’s a bit of a hop-bomb initially, but has enough carbonation and malt body to work really well together, letting it warm up a bit is a huge reward as it becomes much more complex and rich. Worth trying for sure, this is a really solid IPA with resiny pine and complex intricacies everywhere. 4.25
