Notes & Commercial Description:

Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Bottle into tulip

Appearance - Golden orange in color, about 1 finger white head, and just the slightest bit of haze.

Smell - Juicy tropical fruits, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, pineapple, and roasty undertones from the malts not heavy on alcohol.

Taste - Grapefruit, mango, pineapple at first, moving on to a light roastiness, and there is also an underlying pine flavor that also contributes a nice bitterness from start to finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, medium carbonation, refreshing and crisp.

Overall - Great beer to have available all the time. Shorts can certainly do no wrong with this beer.

A - Hazy gold with about a finger of creamy head that fades into a film on the top with a ring around the edge.

S - Sweet mother of hoppy. A twinge of citrus.

T - Much like the smell. Mostly hops with a bit of citrus. A little grassy. Bitterness throughout that lingers. Just fantastic.

M - Not overly carbonated. Very smooth.

D - Oh yeah. I wish this was more available where I live. This could definitely be an all summer long beer.

Purchased at Marthas Vineyard in Grand Rapids, Mi during KBS 09

A: Pours a golden, darkish yellow with ¾ inch white, thick spongy head. Lacing is huge and drapes on the top of the glass on initial pour.

S: Light fruit and floral aroma. Nothing over powering. Fresh, but not overwhelming.

M/T: Very light body, sudsy carbonation, no real bite as it slides down the tongue. Huge bitter blast, followed by some citrus notes, finishing very hoppy. A heavy hop aftertaste, especially for single IPA. This is a little bit of a pallet killer and after the initial shock, it becomes more sessionable.

D: Solid beer, nice quality flavors. Good bitterness that is a little overwhelming at first, but seems to mellow out.

Poured from a 12oz bottle to an imperial pint

A: Poured a 2-finger white head, good lacing throughout and eventually reduced to a 1/4"crown. Orange amber that was slightly hazy.

S: Wonderfully complex floral and spiced hop aroma.

F: Clove-like hop spiciness with a lot of bittering hop presence. The bitterness lingers throughout the session, no doubt a result of the 76 IBU's. As the session progressed the flavor became caramel sweet and malty.

M: Creamy and crisp with a pleasant almost overwhelming lingering bitterness on the back of the palate. Carbonation is sufficient.

D: For me, this would be a short session beer. The strength and complexity of this beer make it best enjoyed on a limited term basis.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle with no date information.

A: Nice tight, rocky head that appears to be persistently sticky and present. The beer is an apricot golden orange with slight opalescent chill haze.

S: One of the things I like about HLL is its wonderful aroma. Chlorophyllic greens, geranium, asparagus, a slight cattiness, fresh grass, lemon peel. When fresh, this beer literally smells like a fresh hop flower. Despite the statement, " a hop and malt theme park for your mouth." I discern little in the way of maltiness other than a slight wheat, graham cracker quality. This is a very hop forward style of IPA.

T: Virtually all aroma qualities exist in the flavor profile. A long lingering bitterness persists well after the flavors disappear. I personally find the IBUs up front to be a tad bit too much.

M: Nice medium body that is neither too thick or thin for the style.

D: Great! A fresh and refreshing IPA with great flavor and aromatics.
