Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

A - Minimal head, about 1/4 finger. Maybe slightly off-white in the yellow. Body is a great slightly cloudy, perfectly balanced wheat colored.

S - Smells like a good IPA. Nothing crazy, but solid. Hops, grapefruit, and orange. Smooth and simple.

T - Again, nothing crazy but good. Hops are moderately harsh and then some orange rind and slight sourness.

M - Decent carbonation and body. Slightly drying.

O - Simple and good. Could see drinking a lot of this on a regular basis if it was cheap and available.

This copper/cloudy/hazy brew sits lightly in a pint glass, with a big whiteish head that fades. Nose is beautiful citrusy hops, cascade, grapefruit notes. Taste is a bit more one-noted, but solid west coast hop taste, little alcohol. Slight floral hints. Mouthfeel is good; it feels like an IPA. Drinkability is quite high for an IPA, as this isn't a hop bomb, and it's also not boring. Nice balance.

On-tap poured into a nonic pint glass.

A- It poure a quite hazy orange-brown color with a 1 finger off-white head that became a solid lace leaving nice sticky rings down the glass.

S- There were definitley sweeter malt tones evident, but the grassy hops took center stage on this beer.

T- Much like the aroma, the hops were much stronger than the malt characteristics. The major flavor was grapefruit.

M- Very smooth feel. Light carbonation and a full body almost made me think of a cask style offering.

D- It's an easy drinker. I had two large drafts with dinner and thought I could have another. While the flavor tends more toward the hops, it's not a hop bomb that's going to kill the tastebuds.

Solid IPA. Pours a clear yellow with a small head. Good lacing.

Nice aroma. Citrusy hops. Strong on the grapefruit.

Good bitter hop flavors. Again, citrus, grapefruit, with a little sweet malt.

Good all around beer for the style. Not too carbonated, and not too harsh on the palate. If you like IPAs, give it a try.

Pours a hazy golden, minimal head, some lacing.

Smells nice, lots of piney hops.

Pine and grapefruit heavy in the taste, supported by a malty base.

Mouthfeel somewhat resinous. Medium carbonation.

Strong pine bite on this one; nice and flavorful.

This poured a nice dark golden color that was a little hazy. It had a big frothy white head on it that left a good amout of lacing on the glass. It smells of hops, citrus, and maybe a little bit of orange. The hops hit you right away with this beer. They are nice and strong. There is some maltiness in the middle that cuts some of the hops, but it still leaves a bit of a lingering bitterness on the tongue. The mouthfeel is good, its nice and creamy with good carbonation and a medium body. The drinkability is very good on this beer, I finished my growler with ease. Looking forward to having another growler filled with this hoppy goodness.

Thanks to Kegatron for this bottle.

Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with thick frothy off-white head into a shaker pint glass. Nice retention and some decent lacing cling. Smells of citrus, pine, caramel, and biscuit, definitely an IPA. Tastes of grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, and pine up front, like someone shoved a whole slew of citrus fruit salad into your mouth all at once. What follows is some caramel sweetness and biscuit notes for balance before some earthy tones and a very bitter grassy finish. Medium in body with good carbonation. Crisp and citrusy, fairly balanced but the grassy finish seems to linger a little too much for me. A great IPA nevertheless, definitely a hop lover's dream.

Thanks to heliosphan for sending me a couple of these. Pours the way an IPA should, Color is a bright murky orange, with about a finger of white heading. Big whiff of metallic and citrus juice from the hops. I get oranges, grapefruit, lemon and tea. Wow, when I taste this beer the only thing that comes to my mind is the color green. The hops are very bitter, and really rush in in a resiny, oily way. Specific tastes I am picking up are mint leaves, pine, grapfruit, earthy tones. Medium body on this one, and as far as drinkability is concerned, be warned. The amount of hops in this takes it damn close to being a palate destroyer. Still, I could go through a six pack of this easily, and I am sure any hop love would say the same thing. Hopefully this is one of the offerings available at the Road House towards the end of this month. Cheers

UrbanCaver brought this back for me from MI. Thanks Cam!

A-Pours a hazy, burnt orange color. Looks nice
S-Stong hop smell. More citrus than anything
T-Nice bitter hop flavor. Some citrus hops and slight grapefruit. Hop bitterness really lingers
M- Not balanced at all really. just straight hops.
D-Bitterness remains in your mouth. I love that part of it.

Amber hued with fantastic clarity. I get just a slight bit of head that covers most of the top of this beer. Intense tropical to citrus hop aroma. Perhaps a touch of orange soda in the nose?! That is an odd but hop forward flavor. I get the citrus hop bitterness with a strong light malt backbone, but the flavors seem to clash somehow. Texture is moderately carbonated and the bitterness pricks your tongue.

Poured from a growler obtained at Short's brew pub on 7/30/08, into my brand new Short's Imperial Pint Glass.

A: Very cloudy, orangish green. The bartender explained that they were selling a "shitload" of the stuff lately, so that was why it had almost a green hue to it. Small amount of head that retained well and left great sticky lace.

A: Smelled of Big grass and citrus hops. Orange, grapefruit, and "hemp". There was a very distinct sweetness as well, maybe from honey?

T: Extrordinary! The hops are enormous, again, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and honey. The sweet malts balance this very nicely.

M&D: Medium body beer, nice level of carbonation, makes for a semi-creamy mouthfeel. As for the drinkability, I had planned to drink one or two glasses out of the growler with my grilled chicken that night, but I finished it before my brother-in-law could finish grilling. I can't wait for Joe Short to bottle this one. Just an outstanding IPA. Skal.

Originally reviewed August 17 2007. On tap at Ashley’s, Ann Arbor. 16 Oz Pour. Aroma loaded with sticky resinous Cascade, Amarillo and other West Coast monsters. A rich, powerful and very fresh quaff. Pours a bit too clouded in bold straw, fresh with a silky rim of white. Flavor is in line with aroma, a rich amalgamation of hop resins, citrus peel, pine and grass. All the lovely aspects of hops and none of the bad ones. A nice thick malt body holds up the hop presentation. No caramels, just a fresh, clean body of paler malt sugars, with bits of lemon and apple juice. Palate is nice, with full body in the middle, but little residual stickiness, instead just a nice heavily dry hop and alcohol smack.
