Bottle into snifter

Appearance - Black with about 1/2 finger mocha colored head, not much lacing.

Smell - Plums, Sweet milk chocolate, fudge and slight grain that produces a blanketed roastiness.

Taste - Roasty. Dark bitter chocolate, spent coffee, subtle smokiness towards the middle and end.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, medium carbonation.

Overall - Good beer. Bought this as a single to try out and it's not bad. Good morning/breakfast beer if that is what you like.

Served in a snifter.

A: Pours a opaque black color with a ephemeral mocha colored, thin head that dissipates expediently leaving minimal lacing.

S: Smells of cocoa, wheat, barley, malts

T: Mellow flavor. Wheat, barley, chocolate predominate.

M: Full bodied beer with ample amounts of carbonation, giving a substantial yet crisp feel.

O: Overall this was pretty good darker wheat beer. Short's continues to raise the bar.

We crack a bottle, pouring a brew of the deepest dark chocolate brown into our Great Lakes pints. This lets up soft etches of cola browns at the bottom slice of the glasses. It holds a three finger head of chocolate milk colored bubbles, showing big waterfall movement on the pour and nice ultimate retention. Lacing is wet and mountainous. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be quite light. The nose fills with notes of stark yeasty metallics, rich and sweet chocolate grain, heavy roast, wheat and rye breadiness, brushes of watered honey sweetness, cherry sugars, musty toast of general barley, synthetic coffee airs, decent boozy fumes, light grassy hops, and mild cocoa bitters. With warmth comes a manure, barnyard seriousness to the grain, and a mild strawberry fruitiness. Our first impression is that the flavoring is robust and salty, yet appropriately sweet, while keeping the feel light, flowing, and soft enough to keep you happy. As we sip, the taste opens with biting malty burliness of even wheat, bitterly roasted chocolate and coffee malts, light leathers and smoke, burnt toffee and brown sugar sweetness, and sea saltiness. The middle comes to a peak and is simple and lightly watered through, with tonic bitters, dried grassy hops, salt and pepper spice, clean chocolate and roasty coffee malts, and prune juice sweetness. The end comes with burnt popcorn kernels, charcoal roast, soured wheat malts and yeast, hazelnut sweetness, tinny metallics, strawberry flesh echoes, rice krispie cereal graininess, and fleeting grassy and herbal hop bitterness. The aftertaste breathes of wet and hot wheatiness, bitter grappa bite, big musk and dust, grassy oiliness, grilled salted beefiness, zucchini vegetals, warmed walnuts, bitter grainy roast, lime rind bitters, and continued, simple smokiness. The body is on the lighter side, and carbonation is light medium. Each sip gives excellent slurp, smack, cream, froth, glug, pull, and pop. The mouth is initially coated and lightly oiled, but this gives way rather quickly to a chalky, drying puck and astringency. The abv is appropriate, and drinkability is high and easy.

Overall, the most enjoyable thing about this beer is its aroma, but only once it comes to warmth. The initial pour, when it is still fridge cold, produces a horribly strong bitterness of metallic yeastiness. Once this settles, however, you get a surprisingly complex nose of fruitiness atop the heavy malt body that stretches from strawberries to passion fruit. This doesn’t translate beautifully into flavoring, but this aspect of the brew is still pleasant. They pack the flavoring into such a tiny, light package, helping to keep it flowing, while keeping things generalizable and marketable. This is a nice sippin’ porter, but honestly it was hard to separate the wheatiness of it into something that would elevate it to a superior, unique, or wildly complex category amongst others in the style.

$2 single poured into a shaker pint (sue me.)

Appearance: Pitch black, like you'd figure a stout to be, not necessarily a porter. Two finger tan head looks great on top, but fizzles away quickly. Decent lacing. Pretty good looking beer.

Smell: First whiff was great when the head was bubbling away -- almost a chocolate milk aroma. After that went away, it's incredibly light. I pick up a faint metallic note, dark roasted malt, and some chocolate when it's cold, and then just a dark coffee/mocha sort of aroma when it warms up a tick... the metallic note dissipates. Nice.

Taste/feel: About spot on. I was worried that this porter would drink like a stout, but it drinks more like its name would indicate. Rather thin and light with a moderate amount of carbonation. Normally I'd dub this a bad thing, but it's what I've grown to expect in a porter. The flavor is solid and interesting, but not overwhelming, which would make this an excellent session option. Plenty of roasted malt, a very pleasant semi-dark chocolate flavor, and sort of coffee and slightly char finish. A very slight bitter finish that makes me just want more, more, more.

Well, we have another winner from Short's. Light, packing some great chocolate flavor, and I love the slight char/ash finish on it. I could see myself picking this up instead of Edmund Fitzgerald, to be honest with you. I just get a more interesting flavor out of this one with the chocolate and essence of coffee with the ash-like finish. More depth of flavor than that brew, in my opinion.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but was just released. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big milk chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, toast, wheat, floral, herbal, light pine, and roasted/floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and moderate hop notes; with good strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, wheat, light coffee, herbal, floral, slight pine, and roasted earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, wheat, light coffee, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors with a fair amount of hop presence; with good robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice porter. All around good balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt flavors with a fair amount of hop presence; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
