Pours a deep golden, nearly amber color with a pretty wispy, white head that recedes pretty quickly to a small outline of the glass. The aroma is... different, to say the least. At first, it's like mixing together a bunch of random spices off the rack and taking a big whiff. Upon settling down and taking repeated sniffs, some clarity begins to form - peppercorns are the heaviest spice, as expected, because that's how it's advertised. Nutmeg? Maybe. It's hard to tell. Coriander? Definitely, but it's not very strong. There are some other ashy, leafy spices lingering around, may just be a product of ingredient clashing. Intense fruity, sweetness spikes hit the nose as well, bittersweet orange rinds and a peppery lemon zest, almost in a wood-polish, Pledge kind of way. Certainly stings the nostrils.

The taste is full of many things. Oranges? They're there. Lemon zest? Big time, again, taking on an almost too-strong, cleanser profile. Coriander? Yeah, certainly in the backdrop. Hops? Sure. A present leafiness hangs around, almost on the herbal side, along with a slight pungent, citrusy-pith character. Malt? Of course. Nice malty background, slightly toasted with a nice bread character and some light caramel even (very light, however). BUT - none of these flavors are any match for the peppercorns. My GOD, the pepper is strong in this one. It's like sucking on a pepper mill. Strong and overpowering, to the point of tickling the back of the throat. I like pepper. But not this much, and it certainly doesn't belong in a beer. Medium body, medium-high carbonation.

As always, Shorts is trying something out-of-the-box, which I love. This is one of the few that miss the mark for me... Surprising, since I enjoy the peppercorn additions in Anniversary Ale. It was just a touch overdone in this brew. I'd like to give the next batch a go, and perhaps the balance will be there.

Nicie Spicie could easily be mistaken for honey; it has a naturally clouded, sticky-looking complexion and shimmering, deep golden hue. It's so completely flat that even a microscope couldn't turn up a visible sign of carbonation (though admittedly I haven't actually tried this).

Ahtanum and Cascade are two of the most logical hop varieties for a brew like this; they each are characteristically floral and leafy with candied orange notes, a great compliment to the beer's already zestful and citrusy aromatics. There's also a pinch of heat. Smells as anticipated.

The taste, however, doesn't exactly brim with orange and lemon zest, coriander, or peppercorns. It's more malt driven than I expected, which is not necessarily a good or bad thing - on the one hand it lends substantial body to a style that typically sorrowfully lacks it, but on the other, it tones down the spice and seasoning supposed to characterized the recipe.

While it has weight, it lacks bubbles. Pale wheat ales are often designed with hot weather quaffing in mind - and given the additional ingredients that went into this it must have been conceived for such drinking - and the lack of carbonation really hinders its quenching powers.

Nicie Spicie is a nice little beer, but it has the potential to be better. While it's likely an ideal choice for those summer long weekends on the lakes of northern Michigan, I can't think of another scenario where I'd reach for this beer (especially not if there's other Short's offerings on the shelf). To reiterate: not bad, but certainly not this brewery's best.

Light golden colored with a light bit of foam that only covers a quarter of the top of the beer. Lively carbonation bubbles. I get the aroma of coriander and orange peel. The coriander aroma and flavor, while dominant do not overwhelm as some beers are apt to do. Front of the palate is wheat and then you get a burst of orange peel and coriander. Interestingly I get a bit of mild heat from the peppercorns in the aftermath. The mouthfeel is refreshing, but the heat at the end beckons further sips. Not your typical wheat!

Looks really weird. Bright yellow/gold color, almost no head at all, pleasing but disturbing to look at somehow. Swirling it doesn't make any more foam appear, just causes a strange coating on the glass that looks almost lumpy. Cloudy. The color is appealing though.

Smell isn't very special, a little lemony, crisp, vaguely like a Tripel but more tart. ????

Taste: once again, WEIRD... but not necessarily in a bad way. Lots of citrus fruits, some wheat, and BIG peppercorns and spice. The reviews I looked at mentioned the pepper and said it was too much, but I didn't believe them. I was wrong. This is basically a black pepper beer. Then again, I've never had anything like it, and the fruit/wheat taste balanced the pepper nicely. On the fade there's some salt too but it's not strong.

On the mouth feel it's thin, crisp, a little under-carbonated but that may have just been my bottle, and feels like a "session" type beer. I can tell they were going for a light and zesty feel with this one.

Overall this is one you really have to try to see if you like it. I'm still torn. The beer itself is light but the flavor is so bizarre that I'm having trouble doing more than sip it. And yet, at the same time I can't say that I don't like it. I think this is the type of thing that requires the right kind of food pairing to fully enjoy. Once again Short's has done something totally strange.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 6/13/2013. Pours very hazy bright golden amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of lemon zest, orange zest, pear, peppercorn, coriander, wheat, bread, herbal, floral, and earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and spice notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, orange zest, pear, wheat, peppercorn, coriander, bread, floral, and herbal earthiness. Lingering notes of citrus zest, wheat, peppercorn, coriander, bread, and herbal earthiness on the finish; with some peppercorn heat building up as well. Nice and pleasant balance of malt and spice flavors; with solid robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, smooth, and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a solid spiced wheat ale. Solid robustness and good balance of malt and spice flavors; and very smooth to drink. An enjoyable offering.
