12 oz. bottle

Pours a vigorously carbonated liquid. Looks like sparkling wine.
White foam quickly fades, leaving the crystal-clear and very light
blond liquid behind.

Aroma of fresh cracked peppercorns, with a touch of coriander and fruitiness.

Flavor: spices are very prevalent, but not heavy-handed, with fresh crushed coriander, black pepper, and a slight touch of malty sweetness that balances things out nicely. Hop bitterness is refreshing and makes for a nice finish. Spices linger in the breath, with a slight warming sensation from the pepper in the throat.

Mouthfeel is good, with a nice balance between malt and hops/spices. Carbonation medium-high which helps the spice make its way across the tongue in a light manner. The finish is dry and refreshing, and the base beer is crisp and pleasantly neutral.

Short's definitely hit the mark with this one. Well balanced and
"nicely spicy". The spices used are obviously of high quality and
freshness, and overall this is a pleasant and refreshing beer to

A - The body is a cloudy yellow/gold in color, topped by a half finger white head. Some small particulate hanging in suspension. Head retention wasn't that phenomenal but some slight spotty lacing was left down the inside of the glass.

S - Wheat with some slight apple aroma. Just a bit of pepper as well as some ginger presents itself as it warms a bit.

T & M - The wheat body carries nice accenting flavors of orange rind, lemon zest and pepper. The pepper comes across a bit stronger at the end right before the swallow, then follows after the swallow. A nice complexity here. Medium bodied with that same peppery aftertaste.

D - A very well done beer by Shorts. I'm usually not a fan of so much pepper as a spice in my brew, but the sweetness of the citrus seems to tame that a bit. Very nice...glad my friends thought of me and brought this to me. A certain recommendation to my other friends.

Golden hazed body capped by a two finger white head. Retention is nothing to write home about, razor thin cap is left with little lacing clinging to the glass.

Aroma is a pleasant blend of spices, citrus and grain. Coriander and peppercorns provide a large portion of the aroma. Orange citrus scent and a grainy, doughy malt settle in behind.

Flavor combines many of the same characteristic which were identified in the nose. Cascade and Ahtanum hops in combination with the lemon and orange zest provide a substantial citrus flavor. The peppercorn is a bit of the wildcard, lends a unique spiciness to beer. Heat from the pepper provides warmth without becoming too hot. Subtle malt contributions, just a bit of breadiness.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finish is slightly dry though certain flavors tend to linger a bit.

I do enjoy this beer though it is not my favorite style. The flavors work well and are generally enjoyable. It would not be hard to enjoy a few of these in a sitting, though would not be my first choice. Personal preference aside, Nicie Spicie is a very well crafted beer.

My last bottle of Nicie Spicie from our short (no pun intended) distribution run from Short’s for GABF.
Pours an effervescent champagne color. There’s definitely some suspended yeast, but it’s bubbly and looks almost like sparkling wine.
The nose is all over the place. Lots of sweet/sour tropical fruity flavors ranging from pineapple and bananas to citric fruits like lemons and oranges. Like a witbier or American wheat gone mad.
The taste is also a bit zany, but different. Slightly sour up-front, with the traditional zest, huskiness, and slight banana from a wheat beer. The finish showcases that black pepper flavor, which seems right at home. A lingering sourness inter-playing with that bitter and slightly “hot” black pepper leaves me wanting another sip.
The only knock on it is that it seems to be a little flat after that initial carbonation rush.
I really like this, and I’d say it’s genre-bending like few other brews are.
The guys over at Short’s really are a special bunch of creative minds.

A - Color is a bright yellow with a touch of haziness. Head is minimal I get only a sticky lace that turns to nothing.

S - Sweet lemon and grass smells. I could also pick up on the orange zest and coriander

T - Wheat and lemon with spicy peppercorn flavors first. Orange peel is nicely integrated giving it a bittering edge. A tad bit spicy making it sort of acidic.

M - Light to medium the ABV is spot on.

Overall I looked to this beer as a Voodoo "White Magic of the Sun" with a more sessionable ABV and I was right. Flavors are just as good as the Voodoo beer if not better since its not as yeasty. Good beer overall.

thanks to jdiddy for this one.

poured cold and aggressively from the bottle a murky sunlight gold to a dogfish head shaped pint glass with a hint of a head that lasted shorter than the time it took to identify its color.

aroma citrus, orange zest and great big black peppercorns. interesting.

very spicy, oranges, lemon, yeasts. very enjoyable, nice for the season.

light bodied, smooth, highly carbonated.

drinkable - very.

The color is a murky and drab orangish brown. It has tall but thinly packed white head.

The scent is quite extreme and can be summed up by reading the bottle. The orange and lemon zest are in your face with a heavy punch of peppercorn spice.

The taste is full of yeast, orange, and light lemon. The aftertaste is loaded with peppery spice.

Mouthfeel is slick like soap.

This was a pretty fun beer and the flavor is interesting.

bottle into tulip

appearance: pale slightly cloudy golden yellow, half finger white head, not much lacing

smell: lemon, highly citric, lot's of peppercorn, grapefruit juice, coriander

taste: grapefruit juice, peppercorn, coriander comes through mid palate, basically everything from the nose but to a slightly lesser extent, wheat backbone is spicy and smooth, a lot of spices and fruitiness, but I must admit it is very refreshing when had cold

mouthfeel: medium to high carbonation, thin bodied

overall: Not a huge fan of the style, but a huge fan of Short's, and for what it is, this is a damn good beer. Very refreshing on a hot day,

A- Pours a hazy golden yellow with a very thin white head. Head is gone in a flash leaving behind a few bubbles and pretty much no lacing.

S- I first thought this some was some sort of witbier since the nose is fairly close to it. A bit of pepper, yeast, lemon and coriander are the things I'm picking up the most.

T- This one really follows the nose well. Lemon, coriander pepper and yeast dominant this brew. I'm diggin this one.

M- Fairly light in both body and carbonation.

D- Other than Shorts IPA's this one is really doing it for me. I like it.

Sampled from a growler I bought on sight at Short's in beautiful Northern Michigan.
Here we go...
This beer is a pale golden color with what seems like a decent amount of carbonation and plenty of lacing.
Wow, the smell is what gets you here. What is it? Citrus-yes, grassy-maybe, peppery- yes
The taste is different from anything I've ever had and I think I like it. It's quite refreshing, tastes like lemon-tea with a very peppery finish (especially when it warms up a bit).
I'm sure this beer isn't for everyone but it wins me over because of its uniqueness.

12oz bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It's a pale yellow and hazy. I got an inch of off white head.

S - The orange peel and coriander seem to stand out. Definitely, prevalent citrus overtones.

T - The orange peel seems to take center stage again. There is some spiciness as well. The lemon zest also becomes noticeable.

M - Moderate

O - As the name implies, this is a spicy beer. There is a lot going on in the taste of this beer. The more I drink it the more the different ingredients become apparent.

Yellow to golden and slightly hazy but almost clear. Not a ton of head but ok lacing.

Smells like ginger and lemons with assorted other spices, notably pepper. Very good.

Tastes much like the smell, kinda wheat beer like with lots of lemon, a touch of ginger, plenty of pepper. A tasty brew that would go great with food!

Mouthfeel is slick, spicy, tangy and medium bodied. You get a bit of a tang from the spices.

Drink is quite good. I'd like to have this brewery available to me all the time.

Poured into my nonic pint glass a faded gold color with a creamy settled 1/4" head. Some visible uprising carbonation, but no a lot. Not as much lacing as what I'm used to from Short's ales.

A unique mixture of orange zest and peppercorn scents immediately register. I swirl the glass and draw nearer to depict an mineral scent that's kinda like well water, but without the eggy-sulfur scent. It's difficult for me to pinpoint it, but it smells very similar to the well water we used to draw from the Mackinac City campground when I was a wee lad. Anyway, I'm sure that didn't help, but whatever.

A perfectly hit of peppercorn greets my palate straight outta the gate. Also, the citrus zest is still at an ample level as well. Basically tastes a lot like it smells. The citrus does blossom more as the beer warms, giving it a tarter and more lush taste.

Mouthfeel is great. Between med. & light bodied with a slightly chalky/tart/spicy flavorful finish. Carbonation is fine and a little less than moderate.

Drinkability is relatively good. Due to the spiced nature of the beer, one is good enough for me. But paired with some lemon pepper chicken/fish, I'd be willing to bet I'd drink 3 or 4 of these.

Overall another unique and focused concoction from the mad minds of Short's. It was very satisfying on this 78F breezy summer afternoon. Definitely one to try before you knock it. I'm glad I did.

Provocatively spiced beer, very peppery, and perfumed.

Presentation: 12 oz brown capped bottle . Burgundy label with a naive illustration of a window inside a radial glow… ? Offers a one line description of the brew. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Clear golden pour amber pour with a fair 1" frothy head, moderate to low retention, fair surface memory, and some lacing.

S - Floral nose, peppery, spiced… Hint of zesty peels… and that floral almost medicinal hint…

T - Nose was a fair warning, it is there and more…. Very floral, intensively so, strongly peppery with hefty coriander and a subdued citric peel buried alongside the wheaty backbone. Funny how I can´t help to associate the peppery and spicy edge from the mix used in some Spanish blood sausages… Sure this is something else but the memory lingers there.

M - Medium body with medium-soft carbonation, a bit hefty a flow given the intensity of almost medicinal touches.

O - While one eases into the flow as the brew progresses it sure has a daring profile, and unless one is a big fan of the final result it does hinder somewhat its final drinkability.

Notes: Not sure what to make of it. Flavors are OK, and I can ride them, not sure if one is not into the peppery-coriander edge to such an extreme one would really enjoy or love this one.

Enjoyed on tap and in bottles in Ann Arbor, MI.

Pours lightly clouded near golden. Delicate and departing off white head, leaving moderate bits of lace.

Lemon and pepper on the nose.

Coriander, more lemons and bright pepper on the palate. The spice is pronounced and biting on the back end. Crisp and flavorful, tastes like a peppery saison. Like likely would go great with the right cheese, crackers and spicy salad. I like this style brew and this one was quite enjoyable and surly worth a try.

Last of the Shorts in MA from what I can tell...

A- Hazy light yellow beer pours into my pint glass. A creamy white head builds up to a finger or so but falls fairly quickly. Small ring and cloud stay but not much lace.

S- WOWZA. From several feet away I get huge notes of peppercorns and lemons, very intense. Upon further inspection it is like some sort of peppercorn lemon custard. Just a bit of coriander.

T- Skeptical after the huge aroma but I gotta do it. Heavy on the fresh cracked pepper throughout with a very nice lemon/citrus flavor. Also the coriander comes through nicely. Didn't make my face change or cringe.

MF- Light body with moderate silky carbonation. Leaves some bitterness, spice and tartness on the palate.

It sounds weird but it is like peppered citrus "ade", and it somehow works nicely. Good fruit and spice use, skeptical after a sniff but satisfied after a sip.

330ml bottle bought from MyBreweryTap.com

Poured a light golden straw colour. Creamy head poured tight, thick and foamy then faded slowly to good thickish coating. Barely any carbonation... fair amount of thick sticky lacing...

Aroma - Pretty strong dried coriander spiciness, ginger, some quite sweet nuttiness, wheaty notes, spicy fruits (apples, lemons, limes), the faintest hint of tobacco, light floral honey, some yeasty notes, hard to make out any malts or hops...

Taste - Light wheatiness mixed with dried coriander and ginger, faint toastiness, spicy fruits (apples, pears, lemons), grassy, some saltiness, some sweetness - but not as sweet as the aromas indicated, peppery bitterness coming through the spices...

Feel - Sharp initially then smooths out.. light body... pretty refreshing and drinkable although i don't think i would want more than one bottle as the spices might become too much..

Overall - A pretty good example of a spiced brew... not something you would want too much of but well worth a try...

12oz bottle poured into dfh signature glass - thanks to lgandrew

Pours a hazed straw color with gold and orange hues. A crop of white head slowly fades into some cloudy film, with a few spots and patches of lacing on the glass.

A boatload of citrus zest in the nose, riddled with lemon, orange, and grapefruit. Sweet malts with wheat and grain, lightly toasted notes.

Floral and herbal hop character right up front with slight peppery spice. Pithy and zesty citrus fruit burst onto the palate with lemon and orange, slight bitterness with coriander. Some sweetness with wheat malts and some slight cracker/cereal notes. Finishes dry with another smack of peppered spice.

Lighter medium body, smooth on the tongue, refreshing and slick. Super drinkable, nice citrus flavor, and they managed to not go completely crazy with the peppercorns (even though this is Short's).

A: Pale light yellow in color. Slightly hazy. Forms a very thin, very white head that really isn't much more than a surface coating. Some light lacing.

S: Typical wheat smell in the background. Then a heavy aroma of black pepper and coriander. Some lemon as well, but it is less pronounced.

T: Starts off with a strong lemon quality that blends well with the wheat base. Then coriander and some pepper, but to a lesser extent. Tart on the finish.

M: Lighter bodied. Tart. Spicy. Heavier carbonation.

O: A decent spin on a wheat beer. Spices and lemon complement the beer nicely, much more so than I expected they would.

A - Pours a cloudy orange gold. No head to speak of, with a slight ring of foam.

S - Not much to speak off, but very sweet with a hint of spice.

T- The first flavor is a nice grainy flavor, followed by orange that fades to spice, and leaves sweet.

M - Light to medium, with very little CO2.

D - A very drinkable spiced ale.

nise pale gold hue with a fluffy white head that recedes leaving minamal lacing

Tart wheat and peppercorn with a hint of hops. Almost sour note on the nose that leaves a nice spice from the peppercorns.

Well, again a nice tart wheat like brew with a lacto type sour that leads way to a BIG peppercorn taste thaty does not overwhelm the wheat. well done.

Medium bodied brew that satisfies.

Well, We have a nice peppercorn wheat that I enjoyed.

This "outside-the-lines" beer from Short's is a heavy and murky orange, on the darker side, with a heavily tinted head that reaches just undera finger's height. Retention is fair, as is the quantity of spotty lacing left behind.
There's a lot going on in the aroma, and I can't deny its intrigue. Spicy for sure but not too hot and as much peppery as anything, it's also got lots of lemon but also lots of sweet citrus. Malts are biscuity but a little more raw than the typical dry biscuit.
The flavor, especially when unsure what to expect, comes together very well. The wheat base is evident and makes for a softer flavor that's easier to lay the spices down on, and works best with all the citrus. Peppery heat builds but never burns too hot, keeping up at a good level from beginning to end.
While creamy and crisp in a soft but about medium body, there is a little slickness in the back of the mouth.

Bottle into pint glass
A – 1 finger off white head settled to a thin layer with little delay, brew is a slightly hazy rich straw gold, a weak 3.5
S – Citrus, wheat with mild florals & spice 3.5
T – A tasty wheat citrus centric flavor with peppercorns & coriander in the back seat for the ride, more orange than lemon, a mild bitterness with just a touch of heat, it all works well together 4
M – Light body, thinner but not watery, moderate carbonation 3.5
O – Drinkability was better than I expected and I’m wanting another, oddly enough I can see me craving this in winter or summer, mild heat lingers (and grows?) after each drink, as advertised a tasty wheat citrus peppercorn brew 4

Picked up a bottle yesterday, overall this is a summer beer all the way, very much like Oberon. Smells of lemon, orange, a bit of floral note, and yes the pepper is there as well. Taste the orange and lemon right off the first sip, finished by zest and spice, mostly peppercorn and more lemon. Feels similar to Oberon in the mouth and tastes much like it, more lemon kick in this beer though. This is a bomb beer, most of the Shorts I have had to date (5 or so) have been decent, this is one of my favorites thus far! Pick some up if you see it, if you dig Oberon in the high sun by the lake, this beer will work for you!

Enjoyed at the brewpub on tap. Peppercorn, corriander, lemon, oranhe, spiced wheat. Medium mouthfeel. Light colour and very lacey. Served closer to room temperature and drinkable. From this spicy beer, this is above average for the style. Nicely done although I would not drink this every day.
