Bottle poured into my Young's nonic pint.

A- A moderate pour left a 1-1/2 finger khaki/tan head that drops to about 1/2 finger before falling to a full film. The body is a slightly hazy copper with light carbonation. Great sticky rings are left on the glass. Recent Short's brews have been lacking a bit in head retention for me. This one seemed to be a bit better in that regard.

S- As I poured, I was met with an initial hop rush that was earthy and herbal. There's a solid malt backbone that's somewhere between sweet and bready/grainy. Very nicely balanced. Something I'd expect from the style. Profile seems the same whether cold right from the pour or warmed after a long, enjoyable drink.

T- Great. Malts and hops come together in a wonderful balance. Malts are sweet at first and combine with earthy hops that are a bit grassy and herbal. The finish reminds me of a Whole-Wheat Ritz cracker. It seems like that typical Short's recipe that tweaks tradition and throws you for a bit of a loop. Malts morph into more of a grainy flavor with some warmth.

M- It's pleasantly, mildly grainy. Carbonation borders between medium and light. There's a slight tingle (hops perhaps). It's quite full without being offensively thick or biting. Well within the style for me.

D- ESB means balance and drinkability to me. This hit it head on. It's tweaked without losing ESB qualities. I would seek this beer out. If it weren't a fall seasonal, I could see this being a regular in my year-round rotation.

This was the store's first shipment, so I felt safe, but what's up with no dates on the bottles?

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark, slightly reddish amber with 2" rocky light tan head. Fades to khaki ring with spotting and decent lacing.

Aroma: Sweet malt, fruity esters. Nice. "Beery" from the second I popped the top.

Taste: Semi-dry arrival, fruitiness really expresses across mid palate; not much in the way of caramel; leads to a very strong earthy bitterness. Lingering earthy/medicinal hop finish; seems over-hopped for the style.

Mouthfeel: Rich & Malty, medium to full bodied. More effervescent than I associate with the style, but not overcarbonated by any measure.

Overall: This is a really rich, malty ale with a very strong hop bitterness and lingering orange bitter pith/medicinal finish. Much drier than I associate with the season, and a little heavier than I typically associate with ESBs, but nice. I love the style and like the ber, but don't know that I would buy this again. I think it is over-hopped.

A_Burnt orange/copper color with a thin tan head. Good retention and lots of lacing.

S_Toasted malt,bread,orange zest,peppercorns.

T_Dry,toasted malt, biscuit, orange zest, grapefruit, peppercorns and grassy hops.Lots of flavors but overall really well balanced.

M_Medium bodied, crisp very drinkable and refreshing.

D_Very delicious drinkable beer.

Not sure how this rates to style. Not too familiar with ESBs. This is great though.

12oz bottle. Pours a hazy tea-like amber with a small off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet cola and maple with grassy hops.

The flavor is sweet cola, maple syrup and some fruitiness with a decent bitter grassy hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, I'm not a fan. It tastes like a hoppy maple cola.

Thanks to Pawola22 for sending this beer my way.

The beer pours a hazy yellow-orange color with a gigantic white head. Looks like this may be another Short's beer with infection issues. The aroma confirms what I expected, there is something off with this bottle. I get some toffee and caramel notes in the aroma, but I also get a funky note I can't really identify. The flavor is similar, with some iced tea, toffee and lighter bitterness, as well as some light funk. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

poured a murky amber with a tannish head . smells like the caramel apple section in the apple orchard on a fall day...caramel...and fruit...maybe even donuts . Taste is subdued compared to smell, but is a nice blend of roasted caramel malt..fruit and grain. Id say lightly carbonated and thicker than average mouthfeel. No problem drinking a few of these on a gray october night.

Bottle shared by Lee - thanks!

Pours a dark copper color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of grainy caramel malts with good amounts of leafy and herbal hop aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Moderately dry caramel malt flavors with good amounts of lighter pale malts. Joining in shortly thereafter are leafy and earthy hop flavors that dry out the flavor profile even further. The hops carry through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without any problems and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a nice and moderately-hopped beer for the style. Worth a shot.

This beer is a thick, ruddy brown-orange, heavy in the deepest part of it with just a little give. The head it forms is about half a finger tall, just off-white, and a little too soft to keep up. Some does remain, and it manages strong spotting.
The smell is mostly earthy and metallic with a little tea leaf. There's just a ghost of toffee in there.
The flavor is toasty with steely overtones, and more expressive than the nose. The middle to finish is very tea-like, with chalky and leafy dryness along with woody notes in the finish. Otherwise, just a hint of caramel adds a light touch of sweetness. Somehow Short's made this beer seem hoppy with only 30 IBUs, but without taking flavor away.
It really leans dry all the way, downright woolly on the palate at times leading into the leafy/woody finish. It is nicely crisp, and there's something keeping the dryness from going overboard. It's clean enough to be pretty smooth underneath.

12oz. bottle served cold into a pint glass.

Short's Autumn Ale is a slightly hazy amber red color with creamy head. It settles quickly leaving just a little lace.

Aroma is really pleasant yet unusual. A citrusy and floral hop overlays a more carmel toffee malt base.

The flavor consists of layers of different things going on. Malty sweet with caramel and nuts, bitter citrus/floral hops, and finally a clove-spice yeast finish.

Mouthfeel is light in body and well carbonated. Complex but balanced.

Overall a really nice ESB but definately different to others I've had.

Bottle from Champagne Cellars. ours medium golden, a tinge of mahogoney, with thick soapy off-white head, and later thick rings of lace. Hoppy armas. Initially rich caramel and good English bitterness, orange taste. Some sourness in the finish - uh oh. Drinkability, but a sipper because of the moderate sourness.

Brown amber color with about a half finger of head. A medium amount of bubbles float to the top. The smell reminds me of melted butter and slight vinegar. (I've had Bloody beer before from Short's and it actually reminded me of it a bit.) The smell is a little off-putting. The taste has a nice bitterness up front, then followed by a surprising earthiness. A nice combination. It has a medium mouthfeel that seems appropriate. Overall, interesting taste and the smell is a little strange. I'm not sure I would get this every year.
