It can't be hard to make a good-looking imperial (oatmeal!) stout. This one is no different than most; a mouthwatering dark dark brown, with also a very dark-colored head that was a bit fluffier than I expected which left some "lacing" but didn't coat the glass as much as some I've had. Dark red around the edges when held up to the light. I've grown to really like the Short's artwork as well.

I'm not sure how to detect oatmeal in a stout, but this one smells like an oatmeal stout anyway. The molasses is detectable, as well as some coffee and the usual roasted malts and so forth. So far, so good. Smells very rich, a bit of alcohol heat in the nose too.

The taste is quite a bit better than I was expecting. For some reason I expected this to be weak because it's a Short's brew (I know they have a lot of high gravity and fantastic stuff, I don't know why I always think this but I do) but this is loaded with flavor. Lots of coffee, in fact I looked at the bottle again to see if they included it with the molasses and oatmeal in the description. Bitterness is low but still noticeable yet balanced with substantial sweetness. For an imperial stout it's pretty smooth. I almost said "mild" but these are still big flavors of roastedness, molasses, coffee, and something else that I can't put my finger on but still fits just right. Surprisingly, the alcohol heat from the nose is almost totally hidden in the actual taste. To be frank, this tastes VERY similar to Founders Breakfast Stout to me, minus the hints of chocolate and that undefinable "something extra" that FBS has, for me at least. And the coffee isn't as exotic or whatever but that's okay.

The mouth feel is just about right. I think it might actually benefit from a tiny bit more carbonation but I'm probably crazy. Other than that it's fairly heavy, not as syrupy as some but still very appropriate; maybe a little too sticky on the finish but that is probably the molasses talking.

It could be the fact that imperial stouts are so hard to find where I live is making me like each one that much more, but overall I think this is a very delicious beer that stands up quite well to the competition. I don't know what the price is since I got a few of them in a mix-a-six for $9 deal and there were no packs available, but if it's on par with the rest of Short's offerings at around $10 for a six, then this one is a steal.

A- Pitch black and nice light brown head. Looks great! Moderate head retention, but great lacing.

S- Roasted Malts, Chocolate, Brown sugar and molasses. It smells awesome. A bit of a metallic note to it though.

T- Bitter-sweet and delicious, but has quite a nice hop balance for the style. Molasses definitely a big player. Nice roasted notes to it. Alcohol is well masked.

M-Moderate Carbonation and mouthfeel. Not too thin, but could be a bit more "beefy" IMO

O- I'd say this a damn good beer. Every shorts Ive had its damn good. The mouth feel is a bit lacking IMO, but none-the-less is still great. I would highly recommend.

12oz. bottle

A- Pours a very deep dark brown, near black. Head is surprisingly light tan for such a dark murky beer. Nice sticky lacing everywhere I swirl my glass. Looks good

S- Cocoa and roasted malts heavy up front, a nice deep oat smell to follow, some alcohol and brown sugar sweetness at the end. Love the full frontal chocolate smack in the face.

T- Ohh, heavy on the cocoa up front with dark malts mixed in, some noticeable coffee in the middle. Has a very odd and distinctive burnt and bitter finish that is ...dry. After the burnt sensations, the cocoa and malts come back in play.

M- Full body, thick and creamy. Not much slipperiness in it but very drinkable, feels heavy, but not syrupy or smooth.

O- Good beer, fairly easy to drink. The ABV is pretty well balanced and doesn't hit jump right out at you, which could be sneaky if you don't know its 10% beer. Not a very complicated beer with the smells and taste, what you smell is what you get.Would recommend it as a good beer.

Served in a snifter

A - This beer is jet black with less than an inch of cocoa colored head.

S - I can smell the cocoa. It blends well with the roasted malt aromas.

T - I get some almost burnt flavors. The cocoa comes through, but the finish is kind of like burnt toast.

M - Full

O - I was hoping this beer would be better. The burnt flavor is off putting.

A - Pours a thick black with a very thin tan head. Light amount of sticky lacing.

S - Mostly dark roasted malts and toasted oats.

T - Follows the smell. Dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, and a nice sweetness from the molasses. Nice bitter coffee finish.

M - Medium bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

O - This is a very solid Imperial Stout. Lots of nice dark roasted flavors. Definetly recommended.
