12oz bottle, courtesy of gratefulbeerhead, poured into a tulip.
A - Pours pitch black with about two fingers of puffy brown foam.
S - Coffee absolutely dominates the nose, with lesser aromas of roast barley, chocolate, and licorice.
T - Starts off with far too much carbonation, obscuring the taste. After swirling a few times and letting the beer stand, I get plenty of sweet coffee flavor with hints of chocolate, licorice, and hazelnut. Hop flavor is minimal, save a muted earthiness. Bitterness is a bit high, though I'm sure much is from the coffee.
M - Full body, rich and silky.
D - Once the extra carbonation is knocked out, this is a solid beer. Good coffee flavor - not as intense as Peche Mortel or Bell's Java Stout, but well done. Definitely worth a try.
