1009th Review on BA
Bottle to Snifter
12 oz

No bottle date. Assuming recent batch

Thanks to ErikKoppin for this one

App- One of the most oily, chocolatey dark pours I have seen to date after 1000 reviews. A pure black color with a great 2 finger fast receding head on it. No cling or lace.

Smell- A huge amount of roast and coffee. Really malty stout with a good bit of espresso and cocoa.

Taste- A good stout with a lot of flavor packed behind it. A nice roast flavor with a lot of espresso/coffee. Had a nice bit of creme chocolate flavors as well.

Mouth- Medium bodied and a low viscious carbonation level. Good roast and chocolate flavors.

Drink- This was one of the better coffee stouts that I have had. Nice depth of flavor and good profile. Really packed a coffee punch behind it. Very enjoyable.

It's a brew day today, and I love to have coffee stouts when I brew. I reviewed Java Stout earlier today and reviewed FBS about a month ago now.
Appearance is black, opaque, and a slight tan head that lines the glass. Smells of strong coffee and chocolate. It's very roasty, and robust. It has a stronger coffee flavor and smell than the Java Stout, which I was surprised by. Mouthfeel is heavy and smooth. Nicely carbonated. After trying FBS, Java and now Cup a Joe, I like FBS first, Cup A Joe second and Java Stout third. They're all great beers!

I picked up a bottle of Short's Cup A Joe Coffee Creme Stout a couple days ago for $2.09 at The Lager Mill. I am a big fan of Coffee Stouts and since I missed out on this beer last year I made sure to grab one so I can sit down and give it a try, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date but I know it's fresh. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- I like the label on this beer, it's nicely done, eye catching, and I like the fact that it says what type of coffee was used in this beer. It poured a nice jet black color that didn't let any light come through and it had three quarter of a fingers worth of mocha colored head that quickly faded to nothing. The color is nice but I want more head and retention.

S- The aroma of this beer is really nice, and it smells very similar to a mocha latte, if I smelled this and didn't know it was beer I would be sure this was a cold mocha latte. It's got some nice and sweet coffee and chocolate aromas along with a very present cream aroma that you don't always get in coffee stouts so this makes it a little different. Some reviewers say that it smells like a coffee house and I fully agree with that statement. It has a nice aroma that is more mocha latte then plain black coffee.

T- The taste is pretty much exactly the same as the aroma. It starts off with some dark roasted malts and a pretty nice coffee flavor that mixes very well with some chocolate, caramel and sweet cream. This beer has a high amount of sweetness but the coffee and cream flavors seem to cut through it a little. This is like drinking a Starbucks mocha Frappuccino in beer form. The finish was sweet with a medium amount of roasty bitterness and it had a creamy coffee like aftertaste.

M- Rich, creamy, on the high side of being medium bodied and it had a low amount of carbonation that worked well with this beer. The mouthfeel was pretty coffee like and worked well with this beer.

Overall I thought that this was a pretty good American Coffee Stout, it had all those nice coffee flavors that you would expect from a Coffee Stout, but it also had a heavy milk/cream aspect that sets this beer apart from some of the other Coffee Stouts. This beer isn't too drinkable, I would only want one at a time when it comes to this beer, the sweetness would be too much after drinking one of these. What I liked most about this beer was the coffee and cream profile that this beer had in the flavor and aroma it was really nice and the mouthfeel was equally as good. What I liked least about this beer was the high amount of sweetness in the flavor, ir was just a little to sweet for my tastes and it would help the drinkability if it was toned down a notch, I also would have like more head. I would buy this beer again, I think a six pack would be just enough for the winter season and it would be a good beer to start your day off with. This beer is worth trying especially if Coffee Stouts are your thing and even more so if you like Mocha Lattes. In the end I thought that this was a solid coffee stout that was unique, but the high amount of sweetness keeps this beer from being on the same level as Founders Breakfast Stout, so FBS is still my favorite Coffee Stout. I like how Short's made this beer more Mocha Latte like then just black coffee, just like all their beers it is different from the mainstream versions, good job Short's this is a worthy and unique Coffee Stout.
UPDATE- 2012, This years release doesn't seem as heavy on the milk sugar and cream flavor, it's just about as good, but I think I like the 2011 release slightly more, the score stays the same.

Got this one from spdyfire83. Thanks for hanging out man!

From a bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: Pours out black and very thick for the style. Yields a small, medium looking, mocha colored head with lousy retention. Head quickly recedes to a hazy wisp and ring. Body is jet black with no carbonation evident. A ring remains until the end but leaves no lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Big coffee nose. Roasted coffee beans, roasted malts and some definite cream and lactose sugar. Much like a milk latte, just as the label describes.

TASTE: Not as impressive as the nose had advertised. Some roasted malts, sweet caramel and milk sugar on the palate. Sweet and sugary, but very little coffee flavor in there. Aftertaste is mild but lingers well with caramel, lactose and just a touch of bitter coffee as well. Not much coffee in this one, and quite sweet. Fine, but not as impressive as the nose, and more cream heavy over the coffee. More balance and a more integrated flavor profile would have been appreciated.

PALATE: Medium body and lower amounts of carbonation. Not overly creamy on the palate, but goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Good here.

OVERALL: This one is alright I guess, but for a coffee stout, it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. It’s definitely got the cream and lactose areas covered, but for a coffee stout, I expected to taste a bit more of that element throughout the beer. Worth checking out, but like may Short’s beers, not worth going crazy for. Give it a go if you can easily find it.

Super dark and syrupy pour. Nice touch of coffee/mocha head dissipates quickly. Not all that much lacing.

S - Coffee coffee coffee. Smells like a dark roast, bitter. Not getting much else except maybe a hint of sweetness at the end.

T - A lot sweeter than I would have thought. It's a sugary sweet too, not much molasses/caramel sugar like I'd have hoped. Definitely getting coffee for the second 2/3 of the drink. Some hops at the end. Coffee bitterness stays with me awhile.

M - Creamy. Enough carbonation to balance the beginning of the drink but the end is syrupy and a bit slimy.

O - This was good. Something in the latter half of the drink that is off-putting. Can't get over the creamy sweetness there... hmm.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours dark black with a brown rim.

Smell: Smells like a coffee house. Rich coffee smell tops with hints of cream/sugar.

Taste: Like an Iced Coffee, no harsh alcohol taste - very smooth but bold coffee flavor.

Mouthfeel: Rich and thick, finishes smooth.

Overall: If you're a coffee drinker, this is a must have! Flavors come out perfect without a harsh after taste.

Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Pours dark black. A slightly aggressive pour produces a thin tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. Very light on the lacing.

Smell: Ever walk into "the coffee beanery" at the mall? That's what this beer smells like. Super rich coffee aroma, hint of creamer and some dark cocoa smells. Screw Folgers, the best part of waking up is THIS beer in your cup!

Taste: Like a delicious iced cappuccino. Dark roasted coffee, cream, dark chocolates and a light sweet tinge at the end. As it warms the flavors get better and better. Delicious beer from beginning to end.

Mouthfeel: Thick, Rich and Creamy! Very mild carbonation but perfect for this style.

Overall: If you like strong coffee you must seek this beer. I'm a huge milk stout fan so this beer is right up my ally. I've had many coffee beers before but this one is unlike all others I've had. This is a coffee bomb. Fantastic beer and can't wait for my next one! Thanks Shorts!

A - Poured into a pint glass, pours a pitch black consistency and builds a pretty small dark head that fizzles out quickly. Some lacing.

S - God, that smells divine. Rich coffee aroma, like fresh ground beans. Very subtle malts in the back.

T - Initially, I was kind of surprised by how sweet it is. The malts have a much bigger part than the nose lets on. Coffee comes swiftly behind, bitter and roasty. Finishes dry.

M - Very rich and creamy. Mild carbonation.

O - This one certainly doesn't disappoint. Bold coffee stout that is both tasty and very drinkable. I know it's brand spanking new, but the guys at Short's should seriously start thinking about putting dates on the bottles. Just saying.

A-Black/dark brown with a cocoa powder head. It looks like a latte. Same appearance with minimal carbonation, just a little froth.

S-Smells like coffee and chocolate.

T-I love coffee. The fact that this is a beer is ridiculous. I feel like I am drinking this super chocolately cold coffee drink. It is amazing how tasty this beer is fresh.

M-For a beer and a stout this is a very odd mouth feel. It is super creamy and leaves a mess on your tongue. Makes sense as a coffee drink but strange for a beer.

O-As delicious and aromatic as this is, I can only drink a few a season. I do enjoy FBS more and can session that (I can) but this is one intense coffee stout. Tasty but not an everyday beer.
