I picked up a bottle of Short's Pontius Road Pilsner a couple weeks ago for $1.59 at The Lager Mill. This is the newest addition to Short's year round line up, I have never tried a Czech Pilsener before but I have had Short's other two Pilseners, Imperial Spruce Pilsener and The Curl, I thought both of those were pretty good so I know they have some skills when it comes to Pilseners, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, but I know it's fresh. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pilsener glass.
A- The label on this beer looks OK with the typical Short's style artwork. It poured a nice pale straw yellow color that was slightly hazy and it had three fingers worth of fluffy and bubbly white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end. It's a little hazy but other then that it's a proper looking Pilsener.
S- The aroma of this beer is all about the malts, it's full of those typical Pilsner malts which have a low amount of medium sweetness and impart a good amount of bread and grain aromas. After that comes a pretty noticeable yeast aroma and some light grassy, earthy and slightly spicy hops that I assume are Noble hops. This beer had a decent, straight forward, and simple aroma.
T- The taste mirrors the nose nicely. It starts off with loads of pale malts that have a low amount of sweetness and impart a pretty strong bread and grain flavor that tastes similar to a slice of lightly toasted white bread. After that comes the hops which impart some light grassy, earthy, and slightly spicy flavors. The hops showed up more on the finish and it had a medium amount of bitterness with a bitter bready and grainy aftertaste. This was a pretty good tasting Pilsener that was very true to the style. The taste of this beer makes me think that this might be the base beer for Nicie Spicy, the malt profile really reminds me of that beer.
M- Pretty smooth, crisp, on the medium side of being light bodied and it had a perfect amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel suited this beer nicely.
Overall I thought that this was a pretty good Pilsener that was true to the style and it was pretty much everything that it should be. This beer had great drinkability, it went down very smooth and crisp, it was somewhat refreshing and would make a great beer to have with dinner, it was perfect with some fried walleye, this would make a good session beer, I don't think it would be that hard for me to take a out a six pack throughout the day. What I liked the most about this beer was pretty much everything, all the aspects of this beer seemed to be just what you would expect from a good Pilsener. What I liked least about this beer was hardly anything, but I did think it was a little hazy and could have been a little more clearer. I would for sure buy this beer again when looking for a good Pilsener, it's nice that this will be available year round. If you are a fan of Pilseners, then you need to give this beer a try, you won't be disappointed. I am glad that Short's decided to add this beer to the year round lineup, I thought that The Magician was a pretty average beer so I like the fact that they exchanged it for an above average Pilsener, it's a pretty good move in my opinion. So far this has to be my one of my favorite Pilseners, Short's really has some skills when it comes to this style and it makes for one tasty and easy drinking Pilsener that has earned a spot in my fridge.

Classic pilsner style lager. Straw in color, with a few fingers of head that has great retention. Rings of lacing are left behind as it settles to a fingernail cap. Tiny bubbles stream constantly towards the surface. Big aromas of biscuit, white pepper, lemon, classic floral and grassy hops. Clean, crisp flavor with lemongrass, biscuit and cracker malt, and bites of peppery goodness.

L: Hazy straw under a ½” white foam collar that quickly dissipates to a thin film. S: has a strong pilsner malt nose with some earthy hop in the background. T: A rich malt backbone with a light apple touch and an earthy hop finish. F: Crisp, light body and medium carbonation. O: A rich, refreshing, full flavored pilsner.
