This 12 ounce bottle was acquired at Keweenaw Co-Op in Hancock, MI ($7.99/six-pack). The label contained no bottling date. It was poured into a pilsner glass. The pour yielded a finger of ivory head. Retention is merely okay. Fluffy lacing sticks to the glass. The brew is pale golden in color, and mildly hazy. A moderate amount of carbonation is seen through the glass. The haze, mild as it may be, gives the beer a decidedly un-pilsnerish visual aesthetic.
The aroma gives off a strong impression of caramel malts. It smells yeasty to the point that I wonder if it was brewed with some sort of mushroom (which wouldn’t be terribly out of place for Short’s). It also smells mildly buttery. Where are the finishing hops?
The initial sip reveals a beer that does not taste incredibly pilsner-like. It is very full-flavored for the style; however, the flavor appears to be a result of insane quantities of pale caramel malt. It is dominantly bready with buttery undertones. The hops assert themselves on the back end with formidable bitterness, but can do little to overcome the onslaught of caramel malt. It comes off as one-dimensional; thus, your enjoyment level will wholly depend on your taste for this particular malt. It’s not bad, but Pontius Road Pilsner does not remind my tongue of any other pilsner, or for that matter, any lager at all.
The body is surprisingly full for a pilsner-style beer. It is startlingly creamy in feel. The carbonation level is high to the point of stinging the tongue. Keeping with the apparent theme, it feels like no other pilsner. I’m questioning whether this beer was even bottom fermented or lagered at any point. My overall impression is that this “pilsner” has the look, taste and feel of a very pale ale. As such, it’s not bad beer, it’s just not good pilsner.
The Two-Schlitz Scale: (reference my profile for an explanation)
I give a Schlitz for this, though lager-style beers are not this brewery’s forte.

This is a crystal clear awesome looking Pilsener. Could have a little bit more gas but the color is excellent. Taste is very clear and light could deserve a little bit more hops. It belongs definitely to the premier league of Pilsener i had in the US.
