Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Very well done English IPA. Aroma was some hops, but also dishrag aroma. Very light yellow, offset by lots of lace. Some citrus in taste, very decent bitterness that's just spot on, and I guess would be subtle to the hophead. Average mouthfeel. (275 characters)

Thanks to Jakers90 for this bottle. Served in a tulip.

Pours a very clear golden-straw color with a nice white head and plenty of sticky lacing on the way down. The nose carries some earthy hops with a slight floral character plus a bit of backing malt. The flavor has earth and a touch of citrus plus some backing grainy malt. Body is light and crisp with a nice bitterness. Pretty good stuff. (395 characters)

so i decided last night to break out 10+, thats right 10+ new shorts beers for a nice sampling with the family. turns out my and my brother in law were the only ones willing to go down this road, so long afternoon for sure. serve cold and consumed on 10/02/2010.

the last in my long run through the shorts catalog last night, i actually had forgotten about this one and we found it in the fridge still while cleaning up. pours out a nice light amber color with a smooth, even head of white that faded too quickly on me leaving me hoping for a little more pop.

nice tight aroma of dirty citrus hops, floral herabl notes, fresh grass an a healthy dose of nice cereal grains that served to balance it out quite nicely. a nice and rich flavor was then brought to the forefront with a quick hitting dose of hops that soon wash the palate with rich notes of orange peel, doses of fresh grass and a nice and well balanced malty profile that really puts the finishing touches on a light an fantastic mixture. nice light and smooth finish with a light dryness.

overall a very solid example of an ipa, english or american this really worked quite well for me. (1,152 characters)

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a clear gold, with a finger of rich foamy head. This hangs around with about a ¼ finger of creamy froth, leaving back some thick soapy lacing which clings to the sides of the glass. The aroma is floral and spicy, punctuated with sharp notes of earthy rind and fruity citrus flavors of lemon and orange. Pleasant smelling Pale malt accents of toasted bread float along the back. There's a nice hoppy brightness to this but I'm also unfortunately getting a bit of an off smelling mineral tinge to the nose as well.

The taste is bitter with citrus peel and gritty earth but is well balanced by a flush of sweet toasted grains. The finish is all spice and green rind notes, lingering with a steady dry bitterness. The mouthfeel has a lighter feeling medium bodied presence about it, with a lively crispness to the carbonation that prickles the mouth with. This stays relatively easy feeling the whole way through the glass, with maybe just a touch of warmth being present in the body at times.

This was pretty darn decent. Beyond some small issues with the nose, I liked how the English hops were boldly flavorful here, without being overly bitter, while the body on this kept things pretty easygoing all around. One of the better bottled efforts that I've had from Short's so far. (1,322 characters)

This beer looks awesome. This beer smells great. This beer tastes very nice. The hop tones seem to mesh well with all of the other beer characteristics in a way that create an awesome drinking experience for me. I don't know if I got a very fresh bottle or what, but who cares. I'd love to try this on cask or as a draft. (321 characters)

Beer is light amber in color and mildly hazy with a white head of big bubbles and some lacing on the glass.

Aroma is earthy and hoppy with a mild pine note to it.

Beer is malty and thick in body and not very hoppy or bitter at all. The overall feel of the hops are earthy and piny with a nice feel to them but the flavors are not met with any late bitterness. Overall decent EIPA but not a repeat for me. (406 characters)

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 2/23/2012. Pours hazy golden straw color with a 1 finger dense white head with nice retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some good spotty lacing on the glass as you drink. Aromas of lemon zest, pine, grass, orange peel, herbal, floral, bready grains, earthiness, and light tropical fruit. Some pretty nice and interesting aromas with good balance and complexity. Taste of lemon zest, pine, floral, pine, grass, orange peel, grapefruit, bread, earthiness, and herbal spiciness. A good sized spicy and earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pine, floral, bread, earth, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a while. Nice balance of malt flavors with the hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy and very crisp mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish noticed. Overall this is a nice English IPA. Good balance of citrus flavors with earthy hoppiness. An enjoyable brew. (1,013 characters)

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer appears light amber in color, with 1/4" of white head.

The aroma is earthy, with scents of malt and pine.

The beer has more malt than hop presence. Flavors of earthy pine, light resin, and malt. The beer has a light bitterness to it, most notably in the finish. An OK beer. (316 characters)

Served on tap at ChurchKey DC into a tulip glass.

Appearance is golden, with hints of orange hues and slight cloudy body. No head presented but leaves the smallest of collars.

Big lemon burst on the nose on this beer, and a grassy hop bitter sense. Quite nice and impressive.

Hops and herbal tea upon tasting, oolong black bitter tea dust finishing with a pine hop sense on the swallow. Quite enjoyable.

Overall interesting beer, I was kind of surprised by it. But strangely can't say much more about it, and I am not exactly drawn to it either, and can't say I'd want to have this again sometime. (601 characters)

Another 12'er in an Epic trade with Kbeals... Been sitting on this one for a bit, but decided to share this one with the Bro tonight...

Pours with a foamy 3/4" white head.. nice lacing.. little retention.. the brew is hazy straw golden.

Nose shows not quite what I was hoping for.. pretty simple yet elegant.. pale malts.. lite fruitiness and a bit of herbal hops.

Flavor begins with a bit of a metallic bitter twang... pale malts come in marching but it is a bit of a tap dance around a herbal boot.. some biscuity malt picks up the pace toward the finish where some minor citrus hops polish everything.

Body is lite/medium.. carbonation seems a tad high.. still a nice creamy mouthfeel pervades..

Meh.. glad I shared this with Steven.. too little and not enough for a small tasting.. okay all around but seems a bit lacking.

4/3/3/3.5/3.5

Thanks again Kevin.. this is sorta starting to seem repetitive, but it isn't.. Kevin is a badass that deserves big props. (971 characters)

12 oz bottle, picked up at Champagnes.

Pours a mostly clear yellow gold, very thin head forms and settles down to a thin ring around the glass, a few lace spots stick.

Smell is plain but neat, light caramal maltiness, a bit of toast and biscuit, lightly fruity, some apple skin, a bit of mineral, herbal and floral hopping, not bad.

Taste is similar, caramel sweetness, biscuit and toast, light fruit, apples/pears, some floral, solid but balanced bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. A pretty solid beer, nothing fancy but done well. (588 characters)

Thanks got to my buddy Nate for picking this up for me on his recent trip to Michigan.

I made sure to get the sediment from the bottom of the bottle into my Goose Island pint glass. Hazey pale lemon and orange rind mix. The head is about one finger after the pour. A little IPA lacing stocks to the glass.

Astringent and spicey hops dominate with some toasted malt and unmalted barely aromas. Earthy aroma overall that is refreshing and somewhat bracing.

Starts toasted and unmalted barley, natural flavor. The hops add a little citric flavor as well as grass and earth to mix.

Dry palate adds that bracing effect to the beer. Good bitter, dry Summer EIPA. (662 characters)

I picked up a few bottles of this at International Beverage in Grand Rapids this week. The nearly blasphemous label gave me no pause, any indecision was based purely on no knowledge of the type of beer (golden ale was all it hinted at). After trying it I agree with the category assigned on BA, a nice subtle English India Pale Ale.

The beer is hazy and light golden colored with a huge rocky foam, solid looking. The aroma is very light on hops, floral and earthy, very near to a honey-infused aroma, really nice. The taste is light and delicious, at least on a 92F+ day like today on my deck. Very light citrus, more of the floral tastes but again not too strong, just right for an English IPA.

Light-medium bodied and easy to drink on a hot day, this is another winner from Shorts. (786 characters)

Massive thanks goes out to beeruser for sharing this one with funkydelic and I at an impromptu tasting! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller sampler wine glass. Poured a hazy straw yellow witha minimal white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, and fruity hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruity hop, and banana. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The hop character on this one really shined through for me and when blended with the other components of it made it quite enjoyable. This one definitely had a dominant fruit aspect going on here. Definitely worth your time to try this one. (711 characters)

12oz. bottle poured into a pint. No bottled date.

(A)- Pours a clear orange color that produced a good white head that clung to the sides of the glass leaving lacing behind.

(S)- A fresh citrus of pineapple and lemon with a big pine dryness. Some honey and banana in there.

(T)- Very very dry with a citrus of peach and pineapple. Piney damp wood with a bitter background.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A decent hop profile with crisp citrus; refreshing.

(D)- A good beer for the summer time. Crisp and refreshing. I could have a few of these. (566 characters)

Once again, thanks to gnemesis for hooking up the Short's for me.

a - Popped the bottle and poured the contents into my duvel taster tulip. Color was a transparent straw yellow with visible steady even carbonation and a thin bubbly white head. Looks pretty saison-ish.

s - Malty, very pale ale-ish. Earthy for sure, but not hoppy as the label suggested by saying "with thorough eary hoppiness." Smells quite pleasant.

t -Hmm...kind of swill tasting. Mostly a malty pale ale flavor. Some grassiness and lemon but no piny hops at all.

m - Good carbonation, bit of a macro beer bite.

o - In a blind taste test, I would probably say that this was a macro. It is drinkable, but really tows the line on average. Don't know if I've had many English IPAs, but the BA description says "hoppy" and this beer is clearly not hoppy. Pretty average pale ale tasting. (857 characters)

Notes from 4/19/11

A - Pours a somewhat sickly straw color. Hazy, with a lot of suspended material. One-half finger of white head dissipates but leaves a nice color. Not a very attractive beer to be sure.

S - Subdued aroma with a faint hop presence, slightly earthy/musty and a hint of coriander, though I don't think this was brewed with coriander.

T - Has a nice hop bite up front and is very earthy. Quite bitter on the finish, but not really in an appealing way.

M - Light mouthfeel with a snap of carbonation and lingering bitterness. A bit drying.

O - Overall this was a bit of a miss for me. Not clean enough to be a solid pale ale, and not particularly tasty. (672 characters)

12 oz. bottle.

Great label art! "Brew unto other as you would have them brew unto you." Pours a partially cloudy, glowing deep golden. Finger of dense, whipped, eggshell white head. Good lacing. Somewhat of a subdued nose, with notes of fresh hops (piney, resinous) and cookie dough malt.

Lightly toasted grainy malt up front. Bready, with a hint of fruit. Earthy, resinous hops gradually move in and build up a little momentum. Slightly metallic and citrusy near the finish. Earthy, herbal bitterness dominates the finish. Some lingering biscuit malt. Moderate body with a creamy feel. A nice, sessionable beer. Keep up the special releases! (645 characters)

I picked up a bottle of Short's The Golden Rule yesterday for $1.79 at The Lager Mill. I have been wanting to try this beer since it was released but I always ended up grabbing the more obscure beers from Short's instead, so when I saw a couple bottles on the shelf I knew this was my chance to try it or I would have to wait till it was released again. No visible bottling date but I know this was released in the spring of 2011, I hope it hasn't lost all of it's hops. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- I like the label on this beer, it really sticks out and the quote on the bottle suits this beer nicely. It poured a slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with three fingers worth of fluffy, bubbly white head that died down to a thick layer that stayed the rest of the time and it left lots of nice lacing. This has to be one of the better looking beers I have had from Short's, the color was nice and the size and retention of the head was excellent.

S- The aroma starts out with some bready and grainy malts that have some sweetness to them but not enough to make me worried. I picked up a good amount of lemon and lemon zest in this brew that give it some nice citrus aromas. The hops smells like a 50/50 split of grassy/earthy hops and piney hops, the combination made for a nice hop aroma.

T- The taste starts off with those grainy malts from the aroma that have a slight bready taste to them and it has a very low amount of sweetness. In the middle I pick up the lemon zest which adds some nice citrus notes to this beer, there is also a slight bitter aspirin taste that is a little off putting. The finish has a good amount of bitterness to it but it isn't overly bitter for a Pale ale and there is that nice mixture of hops that I picked up in the aroma that leans more towards the earthy and grassy aspects of the hops with a slight amount of pine thrown in there.

M- Crisp, dry, and Medium bodied. Most of the beers I have had from Short's have had a low amount of carbonation, but this beer had lots of carbonation, I liked it and worked great with this brew.

Overall I thought this was good beer. On BA it's classified as an English IPA, but from what the bottle says and my personal experience I am reviewing this as a Pale Ale, it just has a lot more in common with a Pale Ale then it does with an English IPA. I liked most things about this beer with the drinkability and mouthfeel the best, but I wasn't a fan of the faint aspirin like taste it had, I think this beer would be slightly better without it. This brew did have some great drinkability, it went down a lot smoother and faster then I expected. I also really liked how this beer was well carbonated, most Short's aren't so this was a pleasant surprise. I could see myself buying a six pack of this if it is released next spring, it just tastes like a beer suited for the spring weather. If pale ales are your thing then this may be a good beer for you. I imagine the hops stick out more when this brew is fresh but all in all I feel it held up pretty well and still retained much of its hop flavors. I am chalking this up as another good brew from Short's, you guys are a very versatile brewery and I am glad to have access to all your great beers.

EDIT- Just had the spring 2012 release, and it was just a good as when I reviewed, a good pale ale. They did change the label this year it looks like buddha is sharing the idea of beer with Jesus, pretty weird and much different from the label last year, I like last years label better, I don't really get this one. (3,580 characters)

I got this beer from kzoobrew. Thanks Kevin!

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.

L - hazed straw color with a white head that left spotty lacing.

S - earthy hop aroma.

T - bitter, earthy hops with a asprin-like taste flashing in before finish dry and slightly bitter. Burps are kind of hoppy.

F - medium bodied with a filling feel.

O - a decent beer but I wouldn't drink more than one in a sitting. (413 characters)

12oz bottle received as an extra in a trade with a generous BA thanks!

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange with a 2 finger white crown that displays medium retention and lace.

Smell: Earthy hops, floral hops, and citrus hops over pale malt...almost a wheat quality in the nose for some reason.

Taste: Same as the nose with a moderate bitter finish. I'd give it a 4.2 if I could.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with great carbonation but the finish is a bit thin.

Drinkability: This is so sessionable... (502 characters)

Bottle three of my huge Shorts haul courtesy of mikesgroove, thanks again!

Pours a hazy gold color with a nice big white head, good lacing too.

Aromas remind me of a Belgian Pale, some bubblegum, mixed spices, and lemon zest.

Taste starts out dry, with light sugary sweetness, and settles into some pretty bitter hop flavors. Some mineral, crushed aspirin, and lemon zest. The bitterness is pretty strong, but it works well with the golden pale ale like qualities.

Mouthfeel is a little lacking, not bad, but it feels thin.

Drinkability is good. This is a tasty little beverage, reminds me almost of a Belgian IPA. Worth trying. (633 characters)

I got this in an awesome trade with lewis1rg. Thanks again Ryan!

A: Certainly cloudy and then some, and.... well.... golden in appearance. The smallish, 1/4 finger or so pillowy white head stayed frothy throughout the session.

S: Tangerine upfront, with a bit of yeast that was very reminiscent of a lavender soap. Not very potent, but still rather nice.

T: A good bit of bitterness, but the lavender wasn't as detectable and I was left with a bit more soap taste than I wanted. Too bad. Still, there was a nice, fresh piney and citrus overtone to the thing in general.

M: A bit more carbonated than some of the Short's beers I've sampled here recently, which was a good change of pace. The lacing was moderate, and the bitterness really offset the sweeter elements.

O: Pretty good, but not great. However, this is probably the "Citizen Kane" of the organic beers I've tasted here lately... (895 characters)

Kickass bottle label would be considered non-PC by some circles.

Golden pour with a fluffy white head that put down some lace as it dropped to a film. Earthy, spicy nose with some fruity esters is clean and pleasing. Flavour is straightforward and replicates the nose almost exactly. Somewhat toasty with a dash of biscuit and only a mild hop bite. Really nothing too complicated going on here, but a nice brew to knock back over the course of the evening. Medium-light body and medium carbonation is okay.

Pretty decent and easy to drink, but overall nothing remarkable.

A- Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color with a nice white head. Head is tons of little bubbles that leave behind some nice lacing.

S- Smells of pale malts, Earthy, floral hops with a bit of citrus too.

T- Took me by surprise at first on the taste. A very nice hop bite, quite a bit bitter, citrusy and floral. Along with this odd metallic taste. Took me off guard at first but this one really grew on me and I liked it a lot.

M- Medium in body and carbonation.

D- A very interesting brew for sure. I really enjoyed this one and it was gone before I knew it. (569 characters)
