American IPA |  5.50% ABV

Availability: Spring

Notes/Commercial Description:
Loaded with hops like an IPA, yet drinks like a Pale Ale, we simply decided to call it a Strong Pale Ale. The fragrant, earthy citrus laced nose is instantly detectable. Large amounts of toasted grains and high alpha Simcoe hops form a perfect union that creates the cool sensation of toasted sourdough covered with zesty grapefruit hop marmalade.

Great flavor & aroma! I just tried it for the first time last weekend when a friend brought a 6-pack by... Had to go out and pick up a couple 6-packs a couple days later! I'm dreading the day they stop brewing it! Short's has so many great brews, thinking about putting together a road trip!

This is a wonderful American IPA. It has a wonderful citrus hop taste and aroma. It has a full body that is complemented by the full hop experience. It finishes very clean. It is very dangerous because it is 6.5% and easy to drink. It is not always on tap when at Short's but it is a favorite when it is.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass
Tawny, burnt-orange in color, with a fluffy, eggshell-white head of foam
Aroma-Heavenly aromatic nosefull of citrussy, piney hops, and tropical fruit.
Taste-Big burst of piney hops, followed by sweet orange and red grapefruit. Very snappy, fresh, and flavorful. Well-balanced and very drinkable. Love this beer! Right up my alley. A great match for a spicy taco dip or a plate of enchiladas.
Get some!!

A: Aggressive pour yields 1/4 finger white head with poor retention. More head with better retention please. Hazy amber liquid is perfect for the style.

S: Mango, tropical fruit, guava, orange, Man candy, WOW! Slight biscuit in the aroma. Smells almost like Mango Mama.

T: Delightful. Amazing aroma comes through in the taste. Bitter grapefruit with nice tropical fruit lattice work. Piney hop flavor dominates later on. Almost a palate wrecker. I like it a lot.

M: Smoothness slides into bitterness. Very 2 dimensional. Nice to feel that.

D: I'd love to have another, and I'd buy a six-pack definitely. Very good, and darn near perfect blend of a hop bomb and a session beer

Orange pull with a generous head on top. Smell is grapefruit, hoppy, delightful. The flavour on this is a combination of malted caramel notes with straight-up grapefruit. The grapefruit is unique, it's a bit more tangy/tart and less abrasive than one would normally find in a beer, it's still very hoppy, but it's smoother on the tongue for some reason.

Mouth is crisp, easy to drink. Drinkability is exceptional. I'm not a big pale fan in general because I usually would either rather have an IPA or something more malty, but this stuff is solid gold and is easily my favourite beer in the style. I wish Short's would start bottling this stuff in lieu of the more pedestrian Pandemonium offering.

12oz bottle purchased as a single at Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" light beige head over the clear amber brew. Fluffy head lasts nicely, average lace. Aroma is stanky pine hops, in a good way.

Taste begins sweet, lightly fruity in the middle coupled with some citrus, and a pleasing bitter hops bite at the close. Mouthfeel is way smooth, and drinkability is awesome. Love this stuff.

A- pours a slight transparent amber color with a off white tan colored head. medium to heavy lacing.

S- a slight caramel malt smell blasted by floral and citrus hops from hell.

T- just how it smells. no alcohol taste noticed. just the right bitterness.

M- a solid medium bodied brew. good carbonation.

D- i wish my fridge was stocked of this!

Overall- this ipa is up there. the bitterness isn't too crazy but enought to come out. like some beers today (arcadia's hop rocket) claim 100+ ibu's but for some reason don't really feel like it. or the bitterness just kills the flavor. this brew has everything an ipa should... a nice malt body and a hardy hop kick.

Poured into tumbler pint glass.

A- Hazy golden orange color with an amber tone. Whitish head, about 1 finger high, with pretty heavy lacing

S- Citrusy, hoppy, and spicy. I detect an orange rind aroma, which pairs well with the hops, with some floral elements present.

T- I really enjoy this one. My tongue detects a sweetness that compliments the bold citrus and hop elements. I do detect an orange rind element that i found in aroma as well. Kinda remind s of the cereal fruit loops, in some sense, only far better :)

M- Mild-mediumish bodied and bitter/astringent from the hops, and pretty nicely carbonated.

I feel this beer showcases another fine IPA brewed by Short's. To my mind, it delivers the elements that most any hophead would enjoy, as well as a high drinkablity, making this a nice session beer, especially during the warmer months of spring and summer- maybe something to enjoy on a lunch break, or several with/after dinner ;) Moreover, a great IPA for those who tread/stagger/swagger the humulus lupulus path.

This pours a clear golden-straw color with big bubbles and low foam.

There is an upfront grassy-pine aroma. Reminds me of thick pine sap from a northern Michigan forest, perhaps? There’s even more of that sappy thick piney resiny flavor when you drink it. Great upfront hop flavor and bitterness that carries through the finish. Don’t judge a bottle by its label. Or its name.

A- A clear, toasty orange liquid with abundant streams of carbonation keeping the creamy bone white head alive. Looks very nice for the style.

S- Orange rind and meat, biscuits, passion fruit, and white grape juice. Very appealing.

T- Same as the aroma. The bitter fruity hops hit up front, then the sweet biscuity malt aspect comes in at the end.

M- Creamy carbonation with a clean and dry finish.

D- A very enjoyable IPA that flexes its muscles without overstepping its bounds. Drinkable, but slightly hard to gauge without knowing the ABV.

Pours a nice amber color. Has a lighter orange hue.

Has a great piney aroma. Pine is very evident. A hint of citrus and malt adds to the nose.

Hangin' Frank has a nice bitter bite from the hops. You also notice a good citrus taste from grapefruit and some lemon and oranges. It has a strong hop presence. Some honey taste gives it a touch of sweetness.

Very tasty and drinkable. The ABV is unknown but probably arount 6-7%. The bitterness is not overwhelming and this IPA is more of a hoppy APA like Sierra Nevada.

Another creative brew from Joe Short.

S ~ a nice smooth, citrusy hop nose going on... just on the smell, reminds me of easy drinking ipas of the past!

T ~ follows the nose on this one.. a touch sweet, a nice flavor of some citrus and bit of bitter on the back end...VERY easy to drink...wish I had picked up more than one!!

M ~ creamy and smooth...nice bodied IPA here

I thought this beer was exceptional compared to other IPA's on the market. It may appear slightly darker, the mouth feel and body feel solid, not like an IPA you throw down a pint and go 'whoa where's my beer'. Granted I drank this out of a bottle, in Michigan, but the lacing was great, the carbonation and aroma were spot on. I have had the Huma Lupa Lipicious and like this beer better. Maybe it's the slightly heavier body and less fruitiness than the HLL but this is a solid 4 out of 5 beer.

Color similar to a darker whiskey. Cloudy haze with a medium frothy head.
Smells very hoppy with a hint of apples. It tastes amazing! Wow! The hoppy flavor is perfect and its lightly carbonated, like red bull. It leaves the moth feeling refreshed and cool. Defiantly one of my favorites!

My first taste of beer at Shorts and believe me this brew is one punch in the face with hops. A solid pale ale, but the finish is powerful. Unfortunately, I led off the Hangin Franks so the ones that followed seemed a let down. If you're in the Bellaire 'hood be sure to stop at Shorts -- and, if a hop head, tip a pint of HF.

From memory yesterday. This one, yellow. Deep, clear. Smells like simcoe because it is. Great.
Nice to have nothing interfering. This taste is light on the malt and caramel, dry, the bitter coming in nicely, with great mouthfeel, etc. I really like this, much better than Huma...the balance and taste is clean and drier than any IPA I've tried. A keeper! More please

Pours a nicely sized head. Color is a clear amber. Smell is very hoppy.

First sip confirms my analysis that this is indeed quite the nice IPA. It's full of hop character without being overly bitter. It's floury and dry and very satisfying. Mouthfeel is full, and lasts a good amount of time.

Having been to City Park Grill several times and had Hangin' Frank on tap on several occasions, I'd have to say that this is just as good.

Try it sometime!

so i decided last night to break out 10, thats right 10 new shorts beers for a nice sampling with the family. turns out my and my brother in law were the only ones willing to go down this road, so long afternoon for sure. serve cold and consumed on 10/02/2010.

really nice done beer here for sure. this one came across very nicely from the start with a rich and delicate profile that threw a few for a loop for sure. dark in color for the style with a nice and tight head of lacing that stayed on top throughout the session.

aroma is a mixed bag at first but wins me over in the end/ nice tight citrus hops are mixed with a dark malt base that at first takes you a bit off guard but comes around to win you over after a few more tastes. light and sharp the orange flavor really picked up half way through my glass. very well balanced with a smooth and unique taste that i really did not see coming. nice and clean finish left citrus and a rich sweet malt taste in my mouth with a nice dry finish.

overall one of the better offerings i had yesterday. solid.

Thanks to Alex for throwing this in on a great trade we did while in Detroit. Copper-orange pour with two finger off-white head with great retention and lacing. Huge, juicy fresh hop nose with a nice solid sweet maltiness with hints of grapefruit and pine. The taste follows suit, with an incredible resiny fresh hop tang that is perfectly balanced with a sweet caramel malt backbone. Loads of mouth puckering grapefruit and pine, perfectly offset with a great orangey-caramel sweetness. The finish is dry but chewy at the same time with a great, crisp and tart bitter bite. The drinkability is off the charts. I only had one and I'm about in withdrawls craving a second. Another great Michigan beer!

Poured from 12oz bottle.

A- Pours a coppery orange color that shows light haze to it. One finger light tan head shows light retention. Long streaks of lace left on the sides of the glass.

S- Tropical fruits galore. Tons of citrus, pineapple, and mango. Caramel malts show off more of a sweetness as well that goes along with the hops. Ending shows a little bit of alcohol which tingles the nose and light piney hops.

T- Sweet tropical fruits right off the bat in the hop bite. Caramel malts come out and stay with this beer being a good undertone overall. The piney hops come out a little bit more in the ending with the alcohol showing up in the very end for a nice crisp bite.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Tropical hops and light caramel malts left on the palate. Aftertaste is mostly light alcohol, piney hops, and caramel malts. No real off flavors in this beer. Balanced overall with a perfect combo of sweetness and bitterness. Medium alcohol drying on the palate.

O- This was a very drinkable IPA and I drank a sixer very fast! The ABV is low enough that it doesn't do too much to destroy the palate and drinking many in a row is good. Another great beer from Short's!

Poured from a bottle into Southern Tier tulip. Bottle opened with a good amount of carbonation.

Pours a cloudy deep orange with a light yellow color near the bottom. A slight half finger of foam sticks around even after a few seconds. Smells great; awesome aromas of varying citrus (lemon, grapefruit) and even slight white grape overtones.

The grapefruit flavors and light orange and lemon are brought forth from the hops almost right away the linger and mix with other hop flavors before finishing with a slight malt kick and hop bitterness. Lingering flavors are almost biscuit like, as noted after a bitter bread burp (no food consumed).

A great IPA and what I like most about the style; showcasing diversity of hops' flavors instead of ruining the bitter part of your taste buds. This one tastes stronger than the 5.5% it's billed at but has enough flavor to hang with any of them. There's a time and place for hop bombs but I this one isn't just another IPA.

Well lewis1rg, I was in the mood for an IPA, so thanks for sending this one to me. You rock Ryan!

OK, I just read the Short's marketing speak on this one and apparently this beer was named after a guy who owned a Michigan-based restaurant and decided to commit suicide and hang himself. Nice...

A: Cloudy gold color, with about a finger or so solid white head that retained a creamy look throughout the session.

S: Definitely simcoe... with a very fruity appeal: grapefruit, apple juice, a tinge of pine.

T: This is the best beer I've tried from Short's so far. Excellent fruit and citrus character, with a very Alka-Selter-esque quality that was to die for. A dry finish, but not too.

M: Creamy and thick enough for the style. The bitterness was just shy of being West Coast-like... but it didn't cross over into that territory.

O: What's with a lot of the less than stellar reviews? I thought this one was far better than Huma Lupa Licious.

A very citrusy pale ale with bright, crisp floral and citrus aromas. Clear orange in appearance with good head, and a pleasant, balanced taste. A little on the thin side, but would be excellent for refreshment on a hot summer day. Overall, not as good as Oberon or Two Hearted Ale by Bells, but still a good, crisp beer. I could see having these on ice for a nice summer evening of throwing bean-bags in the back yard with your buddies.

Pours clear deep amber with a one finger white pillowy head that falls quickly.

Lots of hops upfront. Citrus and pine shine with a subtle sweetness in the background. Really a wonderful aroma.

Taste follows the nose to a T. Straight away a pine/citrus bitterness hits the palate but is balanced perfectly by malt sweetness. Very balanced and at 5.5%, very easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin and has a decent amount of carbonation.

With the appearance, aroma and taste of a very solid IPA but with the mouthfeel and drinkability of a pale, the description "Loaded with hops like an IPA, yet drinks like a Pale Ale" is spot on. So whatever you choose to call it, an IPA, a Pale Ale, or a Strong Pale, it is nothing is not a very good, solid beer.
